Do I need to register with the Police? You will need to register with the police  if your visa states this so  if you have a visa for more than six months  if you have a visa which will give you permission to stay in the UK for more than six months from your entry into the country: AND you are a stateless person, have non-national travel documents or are from one of the countries listed on the UKBA website http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/policyandlaw/immigrationlaw/immigrationrules/appendix2/: AND You are sixteen or over. The UK border agency also has the right to add this condition to any visa so always check your visa to confirm.

Why do I have to register? If you need to register with the police you have a legal obligation to do so. This is stated in the immigration rules (S. 325-326). Not registering is a criminal offence and you may be prosecuted for not doing so. Not registering may also have an effect on your potential to remain in the country and enter the country in the future. This is because registering with the police is a condition of your visa. If you do not register you may be given a ban on re-entering the country.

How do I register? You will be informed which police station you need to register at by the UKBA. You need to go the police station within seven days of your entry into the country. You need to take your passport, any letters you have received from UKBA about police registration, two passport photographs and a fee which is currently £34.00. The police will also need your full name and information about your sex, your nationality, your country of birth, your date of birth your marital status, your UK address, your previous address, the date you arrived in the UK, the place where you arrived and your method of arriving in the UK, your university’s details, your employer’s details and the length of leave granted by your visa.

Do I need to do anything else once I have registered? You need to inform the police when your circumstances change. Changes when you have to do this include: moving, changing your marital status, extending your visa, getting a new passport, changing your course or university and have starting work or changing your employer. If you do not inform the police of these details you may be banned from reapplying for a new visa

Do I need to keep my police registration certificate? You should keep your police registration certificate safe as you will need to include it if you make another visa application. You must tell the police if your police registration certificate is lost or stolen. If it is lost you will receive a lost property number and if it is stolen you will receive a crime reference number. You should then get a replacement from the police.
