Theory This thesis is a result of the architectural investigation driven by the following questions: What defines spatial perception and how is its manifestation subject to the narative it is part of? This was investigated by researching the cimatic work of Andrey Tarkovsky, how movie direction and the choreography of camera and object create spatial sequences.

Design translation The design entails three main programatic functions: the bathhouse, the garden, and the care center. Each of them have a specific spatial narative based upon their function and use. Rather than cleary defining each programatical entity, the spaces of these three functions are built up by fragments they all share. The manner in which you move through the complex determines the way the the fragments line up and how the space is percieved. This is achieved through the creation of a sequence of anamorphic projections.

Sequence 1: the bath hous

As one moves through the building one is directed through the shifting between order and disorder, the construction and dissolution of spacial perception.

Casablanca Mediatheque

MSc 2 studio, 2010, Public building

In colaboration with: Desy Steneker and Froukje Zekveld

Casablanca can be charactarized for its intese streetlife. The public sphere is used to work, eat, play and debate; the streets acting as the mediating agent of everyday life. The mediatheque aims to incorporate this phenomon by continuing the public domain into the building, and articulating moments of interaction throughout the design.

Adding a New City Patchwork

At the heart of the building lies the the library, embraced by the theatre and gallery space. Connecting them is a red ribbon which facilitates the use of the various media while at the same time stimulating moments of engagement with other visitors and media.

A set of drawings that are the result of the investigation into the logic behind the drawing, the grammar that constructs the image. With the use of grasshopper a script was written through which the shift from order to semi order to chaos was investigated.

Greenhouse designed through computer simulated waterflows. The structure is an inflated matrass in which rainwater is cought and divided into two streams. One leading to internal bladders feeding directly into the flora. The other via channels to a centralized storage bladder. Because of the materials flexibility, the structure alters as the resevoirs fill up, indicating the stored amount of water.

London student campus MSc1 studio 2009, Dwelling in collaboration with: Martin Bakker

The concept of this building is the integration of living space and negotiable space. The negotiable space can change according to the needs of the dwellers. This change is induced through the presence of the dwellers. To get the most interaction between the dierent spaces, a 3d labyrinth is created. In this labyrinth the students can negotiate their boundaries. The result is a dynamic, continuously changing habitat. Adapting itself through time creating a exible environment for students to live in.

House for a nudist couple BSc thesis project, 2009 The design of the house discusses notions of privacy in a densly populated area and the balance between living freely as a nudist and imposing the expressions of that life style onto others. Through the analysis of the daily routine and the role of clothing in the life of the couple, a exible setup is achieved in which the dwellers can adjust their exposure and level of privacy.

The Abris - de Kaag MSc2 formstudy elective, 2010 An arc and a diagonally sliced cylinder form an element in the water. The arc reaching out from the water to invite people into the water. The cylinder hovering on the water s surface. Though it stands out in the environment it stands in. The abris engages in an equal dialogue with nature. It becomes an object on which people can play, relax and ďŹ nd shelter.
