MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is an honor to lead the Office of Career Exploration and Success (CES) as its second Executive Director. FY22 continued to be a challenging year of more pivots, budget reductions, and vacancies; however, the CES staff remained adaptable and committed to student success.

Eighty percent of current students accessed our resources this year, most preferring virtual interactions through virtual career tools, appointments, employer information sessions, and workshops. We launched a new job shadowing program with primarily virtual opportunities for students to explore occupations. The team connected nearly 100 students with public service internships through the inaugural Rutgers Summer Service Internship Initiative. We revamped our Road to Industry program with a more prominent focus on first-generation students. And our First-Year Interest Group Seminars returned to in-person instruction, introducing a sizeable cohort of first-year students to the campus while setting their paths toward future career success. With the return to campus, CES has embraced a hybrid service delivery model, onboarded seven new staff members, and embarked on an ambitious strategic planning process inclusive of campus feedback at all levels.

As an organization within the Chancellor-Provost Office, CES remains well-positioned to bring partners together for a common purpose across various silos, and our role as convener remains central. Five councils and 17 career community advisory boards comprised of campus partners, students, and employers (see page 17) work together to navigate evolving trends, plan programs, and strengthen communication channels within the Rutgers career community ecosystem. Through a collaborative effort, CES works with partners to navigate the large and often challenging campus to promote positive postgraduation outcomes for all students.

Staff within CES have further elevated our office in prominence nationally and locally through arduous work under less-than-ideal circumstances. And with the assistance of the entire Rutgers community, I can report that student career outcomes are again heading in a positive direction.

1 2021-2022 Strategic Outcomes Report

CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION

Career development and experiential education emphasizes self-discovery, the development of career competencies and life skills by engaging in high-impact experiences, reflecting on high-impact experiences, and developing confidence in the ability to articulate skills and competencies to employers.

• First-Year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) returned to physical classrooms with 61 sections and 1,100+ fall 2021 students. Peer instructors continued to impact FIGS students’ transitions to Rutgers according to course evaluations (88% response rate). 96% of FIGS students reported their peer instructors created an environment that was engaging; 94% agreed their peer instructors utilized instructional methods that promote learning; and 97% reported their peer instructors made them feel comfortable.

PIs also helped FIGS students identify meaningful experiential education opportunities (95%) and connect their career interests to academic opportunities (95%).

• CES continued its partnership with SAS Academic Services and the shared commitment to connecting with all incoming transfer students by providing 78 career presentations to the Students in Transition Seminars (STS). In addition, over 170 transfer students participated in the CES “STS Career Advising” appointments to individually connect with CES career advisors during their first year at Rutgers.

• CES took a lead role in launching the Rutgers Summer Service Internship Initiative (RSSI) in partnership with the Eagleton Institute for Politics, and the Rutgers Newark

and Camden career centers. After reviewing 570 student applications the inaugural cohort of 94 students was selected. Participants began their internships in non-profit or direct service government settings, started their 3-credit companion internship courses, and received $5,000 stipends. The RSSI initiative provided first internship experiences for 50% of the inaugural cohort.

• The Rutgers Internship and Co-op Courses (RICC), offered in partnership with the Rutgers School of Arts & Sciences, managed an enrollment of 201 students in 9 sections of internship or co-op courses. A spring delayed course section allowed 30 students to participate who secured internships after the semester began.

• CES expanded advising capacity by offering advising services through two graduate counseling interns and six Virtual Career Studio undergraduate peer career coaches. The Virtual Career Studio leveraged peer-to-peer connections in a drop-in/no appointment required virtual format. The graduate counseling interns and peer career coaches engaged with 614 students.

CAREER COMMUNITIES AND CAMPUS PARTNERSHIPS

Career communities allow CES to offer programs and resources for all students regardless of demographic background, class level, academic focus, or career interests. Career communities support specialization and enable staff to collaborate with campus partners to work toward a common goal across academic and departmental silos.

• The Career Communities and Campus Partnerships unit delivered programming and advising appointments specific to the needs of each of the 12 Career Interest Communities (CICs). Over 5,675 students attended the nearly 2,810 community-specific employer and CES offerings.

• CES revised 11 Career Student Communities (CSC) to introduce new high-impact programming. These CSCs developed career resources and services for special protected populations (e.g., Students with Disabilities, Women, LGBTQ) and other exploration groups (e.g., Doctoral Students, Military Veterans, International students) that benefit from support and tailored services. Over 1,715 students attended the nearly 435 CSC-specific employer and CES offerings.

• CES managed 17 career community advisory boards that played a pivotal governance role in developing programming, initiatives, and website content for the career communities. The members of each advisory board consisted of faculty/staff, employers/alumni industry representatives, cross-functional CES staff, and student leaders. The boards were also important for deepening campus relationships and fostering information sharing.

• The Road to Industry Program (RTIP) was reformatted and relaunched as a long-term mentoring program. The First-Year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) served as a

feeder for this initial cohort, with specific attention paid to identifying qualified first-generation college students. This newly revised approach now serves as a highimpact multi-year experience. Following a competitive application process, 60 cohort students participated in a comprehensive training session, met with assigned Program Directors, attended events tailored to their career pathways, and participated in CES’s Intern for a Day (IFAD) job shadowing program.

• The On-campus Work Experience Network (OWN) program had 50 student participants. All cohort students received free iPads through a partnership with ITS and the Division of Enrollment Management to support their technological needs. A customized program was developed that supplemented job placement through interactive leadership workshops. All participants were first-generation students part of the federal work-study program.

• The CCCP team partnered with the Rutgers University Alumni Association’s Alumni Workplace Engagement team to plan student-alumni event, RTIP, and first-generation initiatives and deepen partnerships with organizations with large Rutgers alumni populations (e.g., Bristol MyersSquibb, Prudential, Sanofi).

All CES career interest communities were represented.

• Benchmarking efforts with peer, peer aspirant, and Big Ten institutions served as our source for best practices for employer relations staffing reorganization, job shadowing program operations, and virtual career fair platform assessment to make informed decisions for AY22-23.

• The Interviewing Program (formerly On-Campus Recruiting) offered 26 unique organizations reserving 36 schedules and 63 on-campus and virtual rooms to interview candidates. Employers selected 302 of 738 applicants which resulted in 183 interviews.

6 2021 – 2022 Strategic Outcomes Report
CES strengthens, expands, and diversifies recruiting relationships to maximize career opportunities for Rutgers University–New Brunswick students and graduates and generate support for the university’s academic mission from these important employer partners.

CAREER OPERATIONS AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

Multiple career services critical enablers ensure students have access to effective career resources, provide data-driven decision-making assistance to the department and campus career partners, and provide the administrative foundation necessary to meet a variety of critical goals based on defined core values, presented opportunities, strategic vision, and the diverse needs of populations served.

• The CES leadership team is better able to analyze the effect of departmental programs due to the development of an engagement application and dashboard to assess student participation in high-impact CES activities (RICC, RTIPS, FIGS, advising, and events) and subsequent usage of CES online career resources (Handshake, Resume Writing, Student-Alumni Career Connect, and Traitify).

• CES completed a website redesign and transitioned to the Rutgers Core Component Library (RCCL), including creating, building, editing, and updating content for over 175 web pages. The content of the printed Career and Internship Guide was converted to the new CES website. CES also launched a customized and updated “Find your Career Community” career inventory to help students explore their career interests as they relate to our CES career interest communities.

• Data collection for career events was improved by the development of a customized event evaluation management system and a new email process to contact attendees. This increased the attendee response rate from 30% to 50%.

• The post-graduation survey reached a knowledge and response rate of 69% and 45% respectively. The data collection process for the survey was improved since the start of the pandemic with front office student interns completing over 3,600 follow-up phone calls to recent graduates to assess career outcomes.

• CES hosted the annual Winter Campus Partner Breakfast: Building a Campus Career Ecosystem Together (virtual event) with over 100 participants. Attendees reviewed the upcoming strategic plan and engaged in breakout sessions where participants shared ideas and benchmarked with campus partners.

• Interns responded to over 6,500 CES Career Technology Help Desk requests with an overall 90% satisfaction rate and 94% of users stating they would refer the CES help desk to a friend.

• Leadership and the newly created “Office Avengers” partnered to foster a positive work environment for staff. Staff were surveyed quarterly to assess their sense of belonging and encouraged to share feedback on ideas for facilitating meaningful professional and staff development.

8 2021 – 2022 Strategic Outcomes Report

Ideas implemented include new MS Teams communication channels, staff wellness workshops, office beautification day, updated staff work-life balance manual, and team engagement activities.

• A matching algorithm application was developed to create preferred applicant and employer matches for the Rutgers Summer Service Internship and Internship for a Day initiatives. Over 900 student and employer matches were made to support these programs. Significant marketing initiatives and support with student payments were also provided to support the Rutgers Summer Service Internship initiative.

• CES minimized the harm fraudulent employers attempt to inflict on the Rutgers community by proactively sending email messages to new Handshake users weekly educating them on how to protect themselves. Over 16,000 new Handshake users were contacted with important information on how to avoid fraudulent employers, with a 56% message open rate.

• CES continues to increase in-person engagement with the Rutgers community as it recovers from the pandemic. Over 1,350 inperson connections were made with students, alumni, campus partners, and the community by participating in Admitted Students Open House, Rutgers Day, and the CES Open House. The signature #Rutgersworks Free Tuition Career Challenge also facilitated engagement with CES resources for 1,411 students.

ASSESSMENT MEASURES UTILIZED IN THIS REPORT

Career Exploration and Success views the usage of data to drive effectiveness as an integral protocol acknowledged in the department’s “Smart Operating Practices” core value. The department utilizes a variety of methods to report on outcomes illustrated in this report.

Campus Advisory Groups

CES employs the assistance of various student, campus partner, and employer advisory groups to explore multiple topics. These groups have provided feedback on marketing efforts, new website proposals, recruiting services, advising resources, mentoring programs, and more. This year our career interest and career community advisory boards held 115 meeting sessions with 150 advisory group participants to discuss new initiatives to further assist with the career success of our students and alumni.

Rutgers—New Brunswick Post-Graduation Survey

The post-graduation survey collects information about recent graduates’ post-graduation status, employment, graduate school admissions information, and their campus experiences. A committee comprised of 25 members from each academic school collaborated to ensure that the data collected is useful to all academic partners. Information is collected at the time of graduation for each of the October, January, and May cohorts and then again six months later. This year a total of 7,948 graduates participated in the survey, accounting for approximately 70% of the total 11,545 graduates.

Satisfaction Surveys

Satisfaction surveys are distributed after students and alumni engage in CES activities. The workshop and advising appointment surveys utilize a reflective pre-test followed by a post-test approach to assess outcomes. Satisfaction

feedback from our career fairs, interviewing program, and special events also provides valuable insight and is integrated into staff performance reviews. Data is also imported into an outcomes dashboard and is used by CES management for team assessment and future department planning.

Service Utilization Reports

Monthly recruiting, programming, and online tools tracking data is collected throughout the year and helps CES to assess usage, plan future marketing efforts, determine upcoming selected programs and services, and manage staff deployment for events and services.

Utilization, Preferences, Impact, and Perceptions Annual Student Survey

The annual random sample student survey helps CES to obtain information on service utilization and preferences, marketing impact and awareness, and department perceptions. CES collects this data utilizing a two-stage randomized stratified sampling method to allow generalization of results to the entire population within a certain margin of error. In Spring 2022 a Qualtrics survey was sent out to a stratified random sample of 10,000 undergraduate students. Data was collected during March 2022. A total of 600 responses was received. The survey had a 4.0% margin of error at the 95% confidence interval level.
