ABOUT THE POSITION Reporting to the associate director for experiential education, leadership, and discovery in Career Exploration and Success with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) Vice-Dean for Undergraduate Education, the program director will oversee experiential education programming, manage the Rutgers Internship & Co-op Program (RICP), and teach in the RICP and other Career related programs as requested by SAS. The program director will work under the direction of the SAS Office of Undergraduate Education to develop the RICP curriculum to include specific learning objectives and professional competencies and create internal and external partnerships to cultivate employer relationships and manage the application process. The program director will work with the RU Office of General Counsel to develop/refine vetting policies for internships/co-ops and response policies for workplace issues encountered by student interns. The program director will serve as the primary expert within the Office of Career Exploration and Success on all internship-related matters and oversee the campus-wide Internship Council (comprised of 52 academic internship coordinators). The program director will also coordinate experiential education programming and provide direct service through group and individual career counseling.

50% – RUTGERS INTERNSHIP & CO-OP PROGRAM:

The program director will manage the Rutgers Internship & Co-op Program. RICP is an online pass/fail internship and co-op course for academic credit during the fall, spring, and summer sessions. Course credits apply towards graduation as general elective credits. The School of Arts and Sciences sets the criteria related to recruitment policies and procedures; the program director will review student applications to the program. She/he will provide direct service delivery to students seeking internship experiences, advising them on search strategies to locate suitable internships, and preparing strong applications for those internship positions. She/he will work under the direction of the School of Arts and Sciences to continually review the accompanying course curriculum to ensure optimal outcomes and, at the discretion of SAS, teach one or more sections of the internship and/or the Career Explorations in Arts and Sciences course each semester. Under the direction of SAS, the program director will be responsible for the recruitment, training, and supervision of the RICP co-adjunct instructors. He/ she will work with SAS to gather data, assess impact, and use assessment results to refine curriculum and assignments continually. He/she will strive to increase enrollment in the course through mutually beneficial campus partnerships and employer cultivation.

10% ­– INTERNSHIP SITE VETTING AND OVERSIGHT:

The program director will work with the RU Office of General Counsel to develop/refine vetting policies for an internship, handle articulation agreements and response policies for workplace issues encountered by student interns. The incumbent will also work to ensure that employers retaining Rutgers students as interns are adhering to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and other commonly accepted standards of workplace decorum and practice including policies governing sexual and other forms of harassment. The Program Director will develop best practices in this area and promulgate them through the Internship Council. Will also oversee the Internship Council, including maintaining correspondence and planning meetings each semester. The Program Director will prepare monthly reports with an inventory of all workplace issues encountered by student interns and how they have been addressed, along with a list of any vetting issues of workplaces that have arisen; this report will be submitted to both the associate director for experiential education, leadership, and discovery in Career Exploration and Success and the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) Vice-Dean for Undergraduate Education.

15% – EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS:

He/she will also design, publicize, and deliver small and large-group programs on various experiential education topics as well as general career exploration topics. These programs shall include a variety of experience “unpacking” workshops in collaboration with multiple campus partners. The program director will supervise a student assistant and additional student staff as necessary.


ABOUT US 20% – CAREER COUNSELING:

The program director provides direct service delivery to

students preparing for and seeking internship experiences as well as students within the still exploring career community. Topics include career exploration and decision making, selfdiscovery, resume-building activities, internship/job search strategies and techniques, graduate/advanced degree options, and career/life planning. He/she will administer and interpret career assessments (MBTI, Strong), and maintain records on individual career advising appointments.

5% – MISCELLANEOUS:

The program director participates in department, unit, and team meetings. The incumbent will participate in monthly counseling round tables and pursue other avenues of professional development. He/she will also perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: The position requires a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experiences. Minimum of two years of relevant experience.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: A master’s degree and experience within career services, experiential education, higher education instruction, or workforce development setting are preferred. Experience with online course delivery and workshop facilitation. And working knowledge of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and other commonly accepted standards of workplace decorum.

CAREER EXPLORATION AND SUCCESS:

We are committed to assisting students with making connections between their academic experience and career paths. We provide career-related counseling, resources, and programs to help individuals clarify academic and career goals, establish career plans, develop job-search skills, and make successful career transitions. We build relationships with alumni, employers, and graduate schools to optimize internship, job, and career opportunities while also creating strategic partnerships with campus departments to assist students in developing and articulating co-curricular experiences that will help to ensure they are competitive in their future pursuits. In spring 2013, an Operations & Strategic Initiatives unit was created to provide the necessary support for marketing, technology, assessment, and administration. In summer 2013, the office developed the career interest cluster approach to service delivery now emulated across the country. In spring 2017, the then University Career Services integrated with the First-year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) department allowing the office to integrate career development into transition courses for firstyear first-semester students. In summer 2019, the Chancellor announced that the office would now report directly to the Office of the Chancellor. The name of the office was changed from University Career Services to Career Exploration and Success to attract first-year and sophomore students further while reflecting the unit’s holistic approach to career development.


ONE UNIT AMONG FOUR This position is part of the Experiential Education and Discovery team, which is one of three teams within the Career Readiness & Experiential

Education unit. The overall Office of Career Exploration & Success is comprised of four units each with a director: Career Readiness & Experiential Education, Career Communities & Transitions, Employer Connections & Engagement, and Operations & Strategic Initiatives.
