ABOUT THE POSITION Reporting to the associate director for Experiential Education and Discovery, the program director performs a wide range of counseling, programming, and administrative functions primarily related to first-year and sophomore still exploring students. He/she will provide career counseling services, directly manage the Peer Career Advisor (PCA) Internship Program, and facilitate programs associated with self-discovery and an exploration of UCS resources. The incumbent will manage the relationship with various campus departments that work with first-year students and students still exploring career cluster. The program director will also train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students as part of the PCA Internship Program.

The incumbent will take the lead on career assessment tools and explore creative ideas for driving self-assessment and group interpretation sessions. He/she will also serve as the lead for career exploration tools and resources. In addition, the incumbent will support efforts to launch a campus-wide career readiness badging system.

The program director will work with his/her team to develop and oversee a thriving Peer Career Advisor Internship Program. The PCAs are a team of undergraduate and graduate students that provide entry-level career advising and programming during and outside of regular office hours and provide support to career cluster experts on staff. PCAs also utilize their networks to amplify outreach efforts coordinated by the associate director for strategic outreach. The program director will provide comprehensive and ongoing training to the PCA team and will coordinate schedules and budget related to the program. The program director will lead efforts in exploring new models for career advising, including the implementation of a Career Studio.

The program director provides direct service delivery to undergraduate students and is responsible for working with students in the still exploring career cluster. Topics include developing a plan, career and major exploration, selfassessment interpretation, internship/co-op search strategies, and resume reviews.

The program director serves as the main facilitator of key educational programming focused on self-discovery and introduce first-year students to University Career Services resources. This includes programming and career curriculum implementation for the First-year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS), summer and winter new student orientation sessions, and workshops associated with initiatives organized by the School of Arts and Sciences.

10% – MISCELLANEOUS:

Actively participates in Career Development Unit Meetings and Counseling Roundtables to maintain professional development in the counseling area and pursues other avenues of professional development. Attends full staff meetings, committee meetings, and other responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: The position requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of experience. The incumbent must have a student-focused orientation with exceptional counseling skills, knowledge of career development theory and career assessment interpretation, as well as good organizational, presentation, administrative, and computer skills. Requires a high-energy level and receptivity to change is also important.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: A master’s degree and experience within career services or higher education setting are preferred.

CAREER EXPLORATION AND SUCCESS:

We are committed to assisting students with making connections between their academic experience and career paths. We provide career-related counseling, resources, and programs to help individuals clarify academic and career goals, establish career plans, develop job-search skills, and make successful career transitions. We build relationships with alumni, employers, and graduate schools to optimize internship, job, and career opportunities while also creating strategic partnerships with campus departments to assist students in developing and articulating co-curricular experiences that will help to ensure they are competitive in their future pursuits. In spring 2013, an Operations & Strategic Initiatives unit was created to provide the necessary support for marketing, technology, assessment, and administration. In summer 2013, the office developed the career interest cluster approach to service delivery now emulated across the country. In spring 2017, the then University Career Services integrated with the First-year Interest Group Seminars (FIGS) department allowing the office to integrate career development into transition courses for first-year first-semester students. In summer 2019, the Chancellor announced that the office would now report directly to the Office of the Chancellor. The title of the office was changed from University Career Services to Career Exploration and Success to attract first-year and sophomore students further while reflecting the unit’s holistic approach to career development.


ONE UNIT AMONG FOUR This position is part of the Experiential Education and Discovery team, which is one of three teams within the Career Readiness & Experiential Education unit. The overall Office of Career Exploration & Success is comprised of four units each with a director: Career Readiness & Experiential Education, Career Communities & Transitions, Employer Connections & Engagement, and Operations & Strategic Initiatives.
