Letter From The CEO
Dear Friends,
As I look back on 2023, I am amazed with all that transpired in such a short time. As they say, time sure does fly when you’re having fun!
With over 1,300 events, including 282 performances in fiscal year 2023, audiences enjoyed world renowned artists like Steve Martin, Blue Man Group, John Mellencamp and of course the superstar event of the year, Ed Sheeran’s pop-up concert prior to his stadium sell-out was the cherry on top. As energy bubbled over on our stages, the excitement behind-the-scenes was drawn to the incredible project at Coachman Park and the once ina-generation opportunity called The Sound. Concert goers and artists alike are raving over Clearwater’s new beautiful 9,000 capacity waterfront venue. After six months of high speed prep work, we opened in June 2023 with national acts like Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton, Colbie Caillet, Gavin DeGraw, and Dave Koz. Ruth Eckerd Hall’s incredible forty-year partnership with the City of Clearwater continues to put our community on the Billboard charts!
2023 was also the year that our education reach broke records – we served over 58,000 students! And while quantity is impressive, the quality of our arts education continues to be recognized on the regional and national level.
Through four decades of providing arts and entertainment, the support of our community is just as critical today as when the first five community leaders conceived of building a performing arts center in the wetlands of Clearwater. We have stacked up many success stories, awards, and accolades but none of this is possible without our community partners, corporate sponsors, donors, members, ticket buyers and you.
We are immensely proud of our 2023 accomplishments and with so much in store for 2024, from innovative middle school programming to balmy nights at The Sound, we move forward changing lives through the performing arts!
Susan M. Crockett President & CEO02
Ruth Eckerd Hall
What a way to kick-off our 40th year! Kenny Loggins celebrated the New Year performing at Ruth Eckerd Hall for CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live. In February, John Mellencamp returned to Ruth Eckerd Hall for a three-night sold-out residency and in May, Ed Sheeran performed a surprise sold-out concert prior to the start of his sold-out U.S. stadium tour.

The Sound
After years of dreaming, imagining and building, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s forty-year partnership with the City of Clearwater hit an all new milestone with launch of The Sound at Coachman Park in Downtown Clearwater. Opening June 28, 2023 with a free concert by Rock n’ Roll Hall of Famer’s Cheap Trick, The Sound exceeded twenty shows in the first six months. Catching the eyes and ears of an industry craving a venue this size in the Tampa Bay market, after only five months The Sound debuted on the Pollstar charts at seventy seven in the world, across all amphitheaters. It has not only been met with public accolades and cheers from audiences, but artists as well. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and former Beatle, Ringo Starr said, “I love this venue!”
“I’d say the best soundingweamphitheater ever played”
– Tommy Shaw of Styx
“Simply put, there’s no other venue like The Sound”
– Creative Loafing
“This is something, isn’t it? It’s beautiful.”

Education
Education programming and community engagement initiatives of the Marcia P. Hoffman School of The Arts continued to grow serving participants in Pinellas County Schools, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Eckerd College (OLLI), neighborhood family centers, healthcare facilities, and senior citizen residences. Inclusive arts experiences aimed at our most vulnerable populations further expanded through valued partnerships with the Salvation Army and the Homeless Empowerment Program (HEP).
Commitment to fostering the next generation of arts educators is ever present, in fact two outstanding Marcia P. Hoffman School of The Arts alumni joined the faculty as instructors in drama and music.
We continue to change lives – for today and tomorrow - reaching 58,025 students of all ages, abilities, and circumstances.

EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN IN BUSINESS: BAY AREA
COMMUNITY IN CONCERT
Closing the gap between audiences and the stage, Ruth Eckerd Hall drives communal and personal transformation through the performing arts.
Encompassed by moments of connection through shared experience, live entertainment’s depth can’t be discerned through a flatscreen.
“Art reaches people at a personal level,” says Susan Crockett, president and CEO of Clearwater-based performing arts organization Ruth Eckerd Hall. “When a performer steps on stage, it opens a conversation between the artist and the audience as well as the audience members with one another. Nothing can take its place.”
This, she says, was especially apparent in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which spurred worldwide isolation. So, when Ruth Eckerd Hall reopened its doors to the Gulf Coast community with traditional and innovative performances set to inspire, there was a resounding response.
“Our first limited-seating concert series sold out in five
minutes,” says Crockett, who brings a multifaceted background in the performing arts, strong organizational skills, and developmental talent to her role. “It was therapeutic for everyone involved.”
Behind these performances— from international names like the Goo Goo Dolls to local theater—is an innovative team of which 14 out of 24 managers, 10 out of 17 directors, and four out of five senior staff are women, an industry standout that Crockett credits to a communicative, growthoriented culture and flexible work-life balance that translates to benefits beyond the stage. The
organization has been awarded a Top Workplaces honor twice by the Tampa Bay Times . Having served 223 nonprofits and 46,244 students in 2022 alone, Ruth Eckerd Hall is committed to community outreach and provides performing arts education to children of all ages and abilities.
“Some of our students have gone on to receive Tony Award nominations,” says Crockett. “Most of them just need to learn how to creatively express
themselves. You really see a transformation.”
A Spectacular Sound
Launched in June 2023 and nestled in Coachman Park, Florida’s new waterfront amphitheater The Sound delivers the perfect sensory experience with local food trucks, top-of-the-line acoustics, and sunset views. Selected by the City of Clearwater to manage the venue, Ruth Eckerd Hall is booking a minimum of 35 events yearly for the space, an effort that has already fostered economic growth.
Filling a much-needed midsize niche, The Sound has 4,000 covered seats, a barrier to strong sunlight and tropical rain, and room for an additional 5,000 on its sprawling lawn, allowing for booking flexibility that keeps ticket prices reasonable while inviting a new kind of performer downtown.
Named one of the 25 People to Watch in 2023 by the Tampa Bay Business Journal , Crockett is bringing Ruth Eckerd Hall On The Road, a program for booking and producing off-site events, into 2023 and beyond with unique experiences tailor-made for other venues and even major league sports. And because of Florida’s large elderly population, she hopes to expand her organization’s music therapy scope to older locals facing cognitive decline.
“I love the arts; I grew up with the arts,” Crockett concludes, proud of the national recognition that underlines Ruth Eckerd Hall’s extraordinary impact, including a three-time nomination from industry trade publication Pollstar for Theatre of the Year. “I love working with my team to build up our community.”
