President and CEO Announces Retirement

Robert Freedman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO to retire by the end of 2011, after holding the top post for 13 years.

Robert Freedman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO for the past 13 years announced that he will retire by the end of 2011. According to Rick Bouchard, Chairman of the Board, “A national search will be conducted.” During his tenure, Robert doubled the Hall’s assets and presided over a $22 million Capital Campaign that covered the renovation and expansion of the Hall and the opening of The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute in conjunction with the Hall’s 20th anniversary in 2003. Robert was also instrumental in the City of Clearwater’s 2009 acquisition of the downtown Capitol Theatre, which the Hall operates and books the entertainment for. Robert cites commissioned pieces performed by Dave Koz and David Benoit, Piloblous and Itzhak Perlman as highlights of his legacy to maintain a balance between the traditional performing arts of classical music, dance and theater vs. more commercial fare. He also built up Broadway offerings, investing in shows and presenting first-run tours of Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Color Purple, Rock of Ages and Young Frankenstein. Since arriving at Ruth Eckerd Hall in 1998, Robert presented more than 3,000 performances at one of the busiest U.S. venues of its size, having been named the top-grossing venue for theaters seating 2,500 or fewer for 2010 and the past decade by Billboard magazine. “I’m looking forward to retirement and catching up on reading the stack of books on my nightstand,” said Robert in a recent telephone interview with the St. Petersburg Times.

This particular location is open for lunch and also features an incredible special reserve selection of wines and vintages from around the world. On the second floor, Ceviche Clearwater houses an ultra-exclusive banquet space for parties up to sixty people and an intimate wine room perfect for special occasion dinners and tastings up to twenty. Hoffman Students Do Good

A I O P

Students of The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall have gone on to achieve great things. Following are a few of their success stories . . . Lauran Irion is a musician, songwriter, actor and former Hoffman Institute student. After many successful performances in Clearwater, at the age of 14, she decided to make the big move to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams and begin professional recording sessions of her own original music. Earlier this year Lauran appeared in the Murray Studio Theater. In addition to singing, she can also be seen acting in a recurring role in the hit Disney TV show I’m In The Band and guest starring on the ABC Family show Melissa and Joey. While in Clearwater for her Murray Studio performance, Lauran returned to her middle school alma mater (Safety Harbor Middle School) to talk to the students and gave an impromptu mini-concert. Her former choir teacher, Rosemary Collins, still teaches at the school as well as the Hoffman Institute. Lauran is currently working on finishing up her first album.

Donor Generosity Helps Fund Student Scholarships Each year five talented high school juniors or seniors are selected as first place recipients of the Ruth Eckerd Hall Youth Scholarships in the Performing Arts. Thanks to the generosity of the Leading Ladies and our donors, in 2011 each student was awarded $2,500 to continue their studies of the performing arts. Additionally, the scholarships were presented to the students by national artists Joshua Bell, Frankie Valli, the cast of Ballroom with a Twist, Kenny G and Carol Burnett respectively. Following is an overview of the student’s accomplishments. Kelsey Bannon is this year’s recipient of the Instrumental Scholarship. He is a junior at Northside Christian High School. Kelsey performs with the St. Petersburg College Percussion Ensemble and the St. Petersburg Opera Company. Why We Do What We Do Of the 34 high school students participating in this year’s Project: Shattered Silence, three are left-handed. Some have blue eyes, some brown, some green. Some are from homes of privilege and others have grown up knowing first-hand what it means to struggle with challenges of all shapes and sizes – physical, emotional, financial. Some are confident and carry themselves with assuredness, while some of them walk with a hesitancy that is characteristic of teenagers. And yet, to the absolute amazement of all involved, they now share a permanent bond. They have laughed, cried, written, talked and performed together and more importantly – been changed. Led by Hoffman Institute Teaching Artist, Jared O’Roark, these students are continuing in the footsteps of those from last year’s project on a journey of self-discovery and understanding. He explains “The of Project: Shattered Silence. theme for this year, ‘Despite the Reflection,’ is insecurity. This is an incredibly brave group of teenagers who are willing to open Members The theme for this year’s program was up their hearts and stories in order to start healing themselves, and in turn, help the audience know that the best way to grow is insecurity. through honesty.” If attendance is any indication, their message has reached many. Performing to two full houses earlier this summer, the students received welldeserved ovations and applause. Incorporating the element of charity, proceeds from these performances will benefit The Children’s Home Society of Tampa Bay, a United Way agency that protects children and strengthens youth and families throughout the state by providing a myriad of services. The charity was chosen by the students themselves. Participant Samantha Schuyler (age 17) explains the experience perfectly – “Project: Shattered Silence is about young people being young and trying to understand themselves and others. It’s about realizing that despite our differing stories and troubles and tragedies, we are all linked and essentially the same.” Well said, Sam. Another beautiful example of why we do what we do . . . Contributed by Sharon Reid-Kane - Assistant Director of Education, The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute blending together of teaching academics using the arts has been so positive; Skycrest has become a model school for the program that makes it happen. PASSport is a program of The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall. It's based on the idea that students learn more readily when their imagination and creativity are nurtured. The Hoffman Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall partners with local elementary schools whose student populations face economic challenges. Throughout the school year a group of three to five teaching artists are sent 22 times each to work with the school's educators and students. "I have no words to describe it," said Skycrest Principal Angelean Bing. "It's just awesome watching the kids. The parental support is overwhelming. This is what we should be doing." Curriculum Night is repeated at Lealman Avenue Elementary School, who has a five year history in the PASSport program and Skyview and Eisenhower Elementary Schools, who each have participated for one year. In 2010, John Hopkins Middle School was the first middle school to participate in a pilot program. At this year’s event

nearly 20 Ruth Eckerd Hall donors and community leaders took a school bus ride to Skycrest to experience first-hand the accomplishments of the school’s students. And on that very special evening in late May, the children presented what they had learned about literature, music, history and science. A fourth grade student shared, “I was a little nervous at first but I felt more confident when I remembered that my teachers had told us we were ready and that we would be great!” Source: St. Petersburg Times

Inaugural Fred Travalena Scholarship Awarded - His Legacy Continues

Bobby Rossi, Ruth Eckerd Hall Director of Entertainment, Lois James Travalena (Fred’s widow), Lt. Col. Scott Burnett (representing the Burnett Family) and Joyce Bonomini, Hoffman Institute Director of Education.

In memory of one of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s long-time friends, Fred Travalena, a scholarship and tuition assistance fund was created. Fred was a consummate entertainer, actor singer/songwriter/lyricist, variety performer, recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and USO entertainer of our troops abroad. Because of Fred’s special relationship with and commitment to our military, the new Scholarship and Tuition Assistance Program is designed to provide opportunities for members of military families to study music, drama and/or dance at The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall. The inaugural Fred Travalena Scholarship was presented to Stephen Burnett, the son of Lt. Col. Scott E. Burnett, an Intelligence Officer serving at Mac Dill Air Force Base in Tampa. The Lt. Col. and his wife, Katherine, have six children ranging in age from seven to 30. Their son, Stephen, has studied for three years at The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall in the Jazz Track. Stephen is an extraordinary alto sax player, a senior at Blake High School and a member of the Jazz Combo performing for and serving the community. With two other children interested in the performing arts, the Burnett Family could not be more deserving of this prestigious scholarship.

Welcome New Legacy Society Members The Legacy Society would like to welcome four new members: Judith and Barry Alpert and Carla Soave Roy and Michael Roy. Barry and Judith have been supporters of the arts and arts education at Ruth Eckerd Hall since 1979. Barry is also a former Chairman of the Board of Directors. Carla and Michael became Ruth Eckerd Hall supporters in 2002. Both couples recently decided to ensure their support of the arts last into the future by becoming members of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Legacy Society. Barry and Judith say of their decision to become members of the Ruth Eckerd Hall Legacy Society, “When we die, we leave many things behind . . . one being the memories that we have created in those that have known us and the second is the foundation we leave for others so they can continue to build on your dreams and aspirations for our community. Remembering Ruth Eckerd Hall in your will enhances both of these.” Carla and Michael said of their decision to become members, “We can’t imagine life without Ruth Eckerd Hall. Their Legacy Society seems the perfect thing to do – more people should consider it.” We hope you will consider joining Judith, Barry, Carla and Michael in leaving a lasting legacy to the arts. A legacy gift of any size can make a large – even legendary – difference to Ruth New Legacy Society members, New Legacy Society members, Carla Barry and Judith Alpert. Soave Roy and Michael Roy. Eckerd Hall and the arts!

Become a Member of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Legacy Society – It’s A Great Way to Create a Meaningful Legacy While Providing You With Huge Tax Benefits To become a member in the Ruth Eckerd Hall Legacy Society, simply name Ruth Eckerd Hall as a beneficiary in your last will and testament, revocable trust, irrevocable trust, IRA, life insurance policy, profit sharing plan or pension plan. Here’s a timely idea that can provide donors and their beneficiaries with huge tax benefits while benefiting Ruth Eckerd Hall: As part of the Tax Relief Act of 2010, Congress allowed an important window of opportunity to remain open – one that enables IRA owners age 70 ½ or older to directly transfer up to $100,000 tax free from their Traditional or Roth IRA to an eligible charity. Such amounts can be used to satisfy any required minimum distributions that you must otherwise receive from your Traditional IRA’s for 2011. This can be an excellent way to advance both your philanthropic and estate plans. This provision applies to individual IRA holders, rather than per IRA, so a husband and wife who both meet the minimum age threshold and other requirements may be able to move $200,000 out of their taxable estate!
