Preparatory Division The Preparatory Division classes for ages 7–19 are suitable for students who have talents they wish to develop through sequential study to prepare for college-level training and/or a career in the arts. Students are required to audition before a panel of arts advisors for placement in our structured curriculum.
Exploratory Division The Exploratory Division allows students from toddlers through adults to select classes that suit their interests. These 10-week courses offer fun opportunities to discover talents, explore interests and experience the arts.
Private Lessons Individual instruction is available for all students wishing to strengthen their performance skills in the areas of voice, piano, drama, dance, guitar, drums and violin. Other areas are available upon request, for more information please refer to page 7.
Workshops and Master Classes Preparatory Division students who are high school freshman and above may choose to enrich their training throughout the year. Attendance Policies: Students are expected to attend class each week. Fellow students’ development is affected when a classmate is absent because the majority of the work done in class is ensemble in nature. School conflicts for concerts, performances, etc. may be excused when advance written notice is given. Illness may be excused with advance notice by phone or email. In case of a family emergency, a call within 24 hours of the absence is requested. Should a student miss multiple classes for unacceptable reasons, the status of the student will change to class participation only and the student will not take part in the final performance or presentation nor receive transcript credit for the class. Please inform the Registrar via email or phone in advance of any anticipated absence so the instructor can plan appropriately for each class. 4

DARE TO DREAM SCHOLARSHIPS
Each year, Ruth Eckerd Hall presents the Annual Dare to Dream Awards. This event offers a special opportunity for high school junior and seniors currently enrolled atThe Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts or as a member of the Pinellas Youth Symphony to compete for scholarships in the areas of drama, voice, jazz, instrumental and dance. First place awards are $3,000. Applications will be available August 23 and the submission deadline is December 2, 2014 (an application fee of $20 is required). Preliminary auditions are tentatively scheduled for January 7, 8 and 12, 2015. Finals will be held March 25, 2015 at the Capitol Theatre. PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessons are strongly encouraged for all students who wish to strengthen their performance skills. The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute offers private instruction in voice, piano, violin and viola, guitar, dance and acting.
Private Lesson Fees and Policies • Lessons may be purchased in multiples of 4 (e.g., 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, etc.)* • Lesson fees are as follows: $25.00-$31.00 for 30 minutes $37.00-$47.00 for 45 minutes $50.00-$62.00 for 60 minutes (Some instructors’ fees may be higher. Please call the Registrars’ Office at 727.712.2706 for details.) • We accept credit or debit cards. For your convenience, automatic payment for private lessons is available. Lessons will not be provided without payment. • Private Lesson Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be made no less than 24 hours prior to the lesson to receive a makeup lesson (which will be scheduled at the discretion of the teacher). With a strong emphasis on technique, the Dance Track provides a course of study that prepares the dancer for a future career or collegiate study. Jazz and tap technique classes are the foundation for the Tap Ensemble. Tap repertoire will include cutting-edge choreography in everything from classical jazz to musical theater, hip-hop and funk. To promote a solid foundation in all dance styles, ballet study is offered and encouraged for all levels. See page 4 for class dates.

Beginners to Advanced-Beginner dancers are welcomed to this class taught by classically trained Miriah Hearn, formerly with the Ballet Theatre of Maryland and a principle dancer with the Tampa Bay Ballet. Dancers will be given the foundation for developing proper placement and lines as well as choreography that will guide, encourage and advance each student to the next level.
For the advanced beginner who has accomplished the beginner vocabulary in tap techniques (such as shuffles, cramp rolls, maxi fords and the waltz clog), and is still cultivating the basic fundamentals of tap techniques. All styles of tap are taught, from traditional rhythm tap to a broad range of tap such as Broadway theater, Fred Astaire and rhythmic styles of today. Tap shoes required.

Technique is the foundation for all dance movement. A strong technical foundation in jazz enables a dancer to focus on the stylistic and performance aspects of dance.
For the intermediate tap dancer who has mastered basic tap fundamentals such as shuffles, time steps, Irishes, Maxi Fords and cramp rolls. Students develop a personal style and musicality by creating their own rhythms and sounds. Intermediate rhythmic tap choreography is taught and dancers explore improvisation. This class enables dancers to excel in tap dance. Tap shoes required.
Ages: 7-12, Wednesdays, 5:30–6:30 pm Tuition: $300.00 Instructor: Hayley Matrai For the beginner studying the basic fundamentals of tap technique this is a fun class that introduces all styles of tap. From traditional rhythm tap to a broad range of tap such as Broadway theater and modern rhythmic styles, this class will get our young tappers started on the right foot! Tap shoes required.

Children are taught the fundamentals and language of jazz in an atmosphere of encouragement, discipline and warmth. Emphasis is on correct placement and development of rhythm and isolation, which allow more freedom of expression and movement.

The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts Rhythm & Sole Tap Ensemble Ages: 11–18, Thursdays, 5:15-9:15pm Selected by audition, members of the Rhythm & Sole Tap Ensemble will be required to attend the Tuesday tap and jazz classes recommended by the Director. The ensemble rehearsals will take place on Thursdays, 5:30-8:30pm.* Tuition: $660.00 per term *Times within the four hours may vary dependent on casting. Dancers will be required to rehearse for two of the four hours. Director: Beth Caprio Under the direction of Beth Caprio, The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute’s own resident tap ensemble meets twice a week to study and rehearse for performance opportunities. The ensemble is comprised of two groups that rehearse at appropriate levels and then combine their talents for performance opportunities. Past appearances by the ensemble have included Walt Disney World,The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts Spring Concert on the Main Stage, and as the opening act for private concerts such as Maroon 5, Daughtry and the Counting Crows! The youth tap repertoire includes cuttingedge choreography in everything from classical jazz to musical theater, hip-hop and funk. Enrollment is by audition only.
Advanced Jazz Technique and Conditioning Prerequisite: jazz and ballet experience Ages: 12–18, Tuesdays, 7:15–8:15 pm Tuition: $335.00 Instructor: Madeline Barnes This advanced technique class emphasizes the concept of isolation technique, a feature common to all the different and personal characteristics of jazz dance. While building strength and stamina, the essential skills of focus, projection, interpretation and style, linked to the ability to absorb and memorize choreography, are also developed.

The Drama Track includes four levels that rotate curriculum on a three-year cycle to provide a varied and thorough experience. This year’s curriculum will emphasize original texts. Students will be guided in the creation of their own monologues and scenes. These classes build the essential skills and tools needed for the actor to succeed in performance and to prepare for further study. Course work will be showcased at the end of each semester. See page 4 for class dates.
Level I: Setting the Stage Ages: 7–9, Saturdays, 11:15 am–1:15 pm Tuition: $390.00 includes script fee Instructor: TBA This class focuses on developing the skill sets, theater vocabulary, and knowledge a young theater performer needs to sustain a performance, engage an audience, and grow as an artist through creative play, pantomime, reading, and acting out familiar stories and characters. As the class and individual students progress, work begins on developing the actors’ physical abilities, character connection, emotional comprehension, and listening and focusing skills.
Level II: Creating Connections Ages: 10–12, Saturdays, 11:15 am–1:15 pm Tuition: $390.00 includes script fee Instructor: Jarrett Koski Level II continues the refinement of skills covered in Level I while beginning the development of the student’s primary resources (the actor’s tool kit): the body, the mind, the voice and the imagination. Students explore the role that each of these tools plays in character creation, connection to setting, and listening and focusing skills. Further expansion of work in a collaborative ensemble will be linked with monologue reading and writing, and scene work.
Level III: Drama in Motion Ages: 13–16, Saturdays, 9:00–10:00 am, drama class 10:00–11:00 am, performance building Tuition: $390.00 includes script fee Instructor: TBA Level III further develops the actor’s physical skills through various techniques from Alexander, Meyerhold, and commedia dell’arte mask and body work. These techniques will be applied to the vocal and physical work of the singer/actor to assist in the creation of stronger and more truthful moments. The application of these skills and scripts from Thornton Wilder, Eugene O’Neill and William Shakespeare are used in the performance at the end of the fall and winter/spring semester.
Level IV: Focused Studies Ages: 14–18, Saturdays, 9:00–10:00 am, drama class, 10:00–11:00 am, performance building Tuition: $390.00 includes script fee Instructor: Jack Holloway Various Guest Artists Level IV addresses the needs of the teen actor who is preparing material for competition and college auditions. While continuing to develop the actors’ vocal and physical skills of expression, students will delve more deeply into understanding the role of the actor in professional theater. Students focus on the world of the playwright, learning to create truthful moments from a published play. Class work focuses on the growth and skill development of each individual student through monologues, duets, and student directed pieces from both original written works and classic dramatic repertoire. Guest artists, respected instructors from some of the top drama schools in the country, will conduct workshops throughout the fall and spring semesters. Drama students collaborate on performance pieces to be presented in December and April.

This is an auditioned choir for intermediate girls in grades 6–10. Students in this choir will focus on vocal tone, choral blend, and independent part singing. They will receive individualized music theory study and will perform in a seasonal concert at the end of the fall semester and the Main Stage Spring Concert both as a solo ensemble and combined with Basso Voce as a mixed ensemble. Additional field trip / master class opportunities and performance opportunities may also be available.
This is an exciting, hip opportunity for intermediate boys in grades 6–10. Students in this choir will focus on vocal tone, choral blend, and independent part singing with repertoire specific to the developing young male voice. They will receive music theory study and will perform in a seasonal concert at the end of the fall semester and the Main Stage Spring Concert both as a solo ensemble and combined with Bella Voce as a mixed ensemble. Additional performance opportunities at various sports events will also be available.
The Ruth Eckerd Hall Children’s Choir prides itself both in entertaining its audiences and in achieving music literacy for all its members. Students are trained in sight-reading, vocal technique, and two- and three-part harmony. Performances reflect the diversity of choral repertoire, offering a variety of concerts both at Ruth Eckerd Hall and off site during the fall and spring semesters. Past performances include appearances at Disney World and Busch Gardens. Come be a part of this fun and highlevel performance choir!
Level I: The Language of Music Instructor Bill Cusick Ages: 7–9 Just as every language has an alphabet, grammar and structural rules, so does the language of music. This course teaches musical notation of rhythm and melody. Students reach mastery levels in sight-reading in the key of C, rhythmic dictations, beginning ear trainig, and melodic notation, using a fun approach which reinforces long-term retention of concepts. 14

Level II: The Language of Music for Growing Singers Instructor: Kathy Bawel Ages: 10–12 This course builds on the theory foundation provided in The Language of Music. Students begin to explore key signatures beyond C, study ear training and rhythmic and melodic dictations in further depth, and develop vocal literacy and keyboard skills. Students are prepared for the Florida Vocal Association All-State auditions and college placement tests.
Level III: The Foundations of Music Theory Instructor: Judith Hurst Ages: 12–16 This course focuses on building a solid foundation of music theory and understanding of the musical language through an in-depth study of music literacy, music vocabulary, ear training, sight-reading and keyboard skills. Students are prepared for the Florida Vocal Association All-State auditions and college placement tests.
Level IV: Music Theory Instructor: Rosemary Collins Ages: 14–18 This theory class is designed to prepare students for the Florida Vocal Association All-State auditions and college placement tests. Students use knowledge from prior level music classes to build even stronger theory skills, including an understanding of chord progressions, transposition, two-part ear training, sight-reading and piano skills.
Level V: Advanced Music Theory Instructor: Kathy Bawel Ages: 14–18 This college-prep course gives students the edge necessary to compete at a higher level for All-State placements, college auditions and scholarships. Students work toward mastery of college entrance proficiency levels in music theory and ear training, including notation, intervals, key signatures, major, minor, augmented and diminished chords, music vocabulary, and beginning analysis of form and chord structure.
Center Stage Mixed Ensemble Levels IV & V Prerequisite: Must be a high school student or have approval of the Director of Education Ages: 14–18, Saturdays, 11:30 am–1:00 pm, performance building, 1:00–1:30 pm, musicianship class Tuition: $415.00 includes musicianship class, Choir, and performance and text fees Instructors: Kathy Bawel, Bill Cusick The Center Stage Mixed Ensemble is an auditioned group of experienced male and female students in grades 9–12.This ensemble gives students an opportunity to learn varied choral repertoire and to build musicianship at a higher level. Students will have many opportunities to perform both on and off the Ruth Eckerd Hall campus, including in the Disney Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir. (Participation fees for the Disney Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir are not included in tuition.) NOTE: Center Stage will begin rehearsals on Saturday, August 23
All-State Preparation Workshops High School Sessions: Saturday, September 13, 9:00–11:30 am Middle School Sessions: Saturday, September 13, 12:30–3:00 pm (For exact times, please ask your Pinellas County choral teachers.) Planning to test and audition for the Florida All-Sate Chorus? Join us at The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts for a free workshop to help you prepare! Sight-singing, listening, vocabulary, and more will be the focus of the first workshop on Saturday, September 13. For students who progress on to the vocal audition, a follow-up workshop to prepare the required music will take place in October. Don’t miss these exciting opportunities to get an edge at the audition!
Center Stage Troupe Students from 14 to 18 years of age may apply to become part of this ensemble that performs a varied repertoire of music at hospitals, senior centers, and at events for charities, Ruth Eckerd Hall and the City of Clearwater. This experience can serve to broaden awareness of alternative career opportunities and the role of the arts in medicine while developing a deeper understanding of the connection between students and the community. Participants are eligible to use the Center Stage Troupe as their community service project for Bright Futures Scholarships. In partnership with Morton Plant Mease Hospitals, this ensemble brings an atmosphere of healing to members of our community through the joy of music with songs which are selected, rehearsed and choreographed by the students and are performed at hospitals and senior centers. The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts jazz studies are well known to the Tampa Bay area jazz community. Students come from a four-county range to participate and many past students are now studying at the country’s top music schools including Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and Boston Conservatory. Students are placed in our multi-level Jazz Track based on their knowledge of music theory, instrument proficiency, and jazz improvisation skills. The Jazz Track includes participation in a musicianship/improvisation class and group and combo performance. Performance opportunities include the Ruth Eckerd Hall Main Stage, the Clearwater Jazz Holiday and the Lakeside Jazz Festival. The Jazz Track is sponsored in part by the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. See page 4 for class dates. (Participation fees for the Festival are not included in tuition.)

Lead Instructor: Frank Williams; Associate Instructor: Chris Touchton The Lab Band is designed to give the traditional band student an opportunity to learn jazz style. Rehearsing and performing big band and/or charts of moderate difficulty, the Lab Band offers students an opportunity to apply the concepts from jazz musicianship classes to the performance of various forms of jazz including the blues. Theory classes provide students with the foundations of music, including reading, writing and listening activities as well as mastery of elements essential for improvisation. Participants are challenged and rewarded by studying and performing literature of higher quality. The history and development of jazz music is explored. Basic Improvisation* Building on the fundamentals of jazz literacy in which the student has demonstrated proficiency, he/she will add the elements of major, minor and modal scales and arpeggios, basic chord construction including major, minor, diminished and augmented, and symbols and vocabulary specific to jazz music. In addition, participants continue development of aural skills in recognizing melodic and harmonic intervals. Students begin applying this knowledge to their instruments.
Advanced Improvisation*

Ruth Eckerd Hall/ Clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo* Students in this advanced-level group will be featured performers at events for both Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Clearwater Jazz Holiday. Possible appearances include: Capitol Theatre events, Circle of Stars Party, Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Gala, and the Clearwater Jazz Holiday’s Poster Unveiling. This combo is comprised of the most senior and experienced players. Participants in the Ruth Eckerd Hall/Clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo will receive full scholarships for all Jazz Track studies for the 2014–2015 season courtesy of Clearwater Jazz Holiday. *Students are placed by auditioning. Singing Stars
Ages: 7–9, Wednesdays, 5:15–6:30 pm Tuition per term: $135.00 Instructor: Carolyn Cline Does your child love to sing? This class prepares the young singer for performing by combining favorite songs and fun games to teach music literacy. Students enjoy singing a variety of entertaining, age-appropriate repertoire, including songs from musicals such as Annie, Oliver and Disney classics. This class culminates with a presentation at the end of the term.
Drama Blast! Ages: 9–11, Wednesday, 6:15–7:30 pm Tuition per term: $135.00 Instructor: TBA Whether you already know your way around the stage or are just getting your feet wet, this class is a big bang of fun. We will be using a variety of theater and improv games, plus cool costume pieces and props, portraying classic comedians, dastardly villains and weird and wacky characters. All the while, students will be rehearsing the fundamentals of acting as they develop their performance skills and enter the wonderful world of stage acting.

Musical Theater Intensive: Life Is A Cabaret Ages: 14-18, Wednesdays, 5:30–7:00 pm Tuition per term: $165.00 Instructor: Jarrett Koski “What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play!” Everyone has a story to tell. This fall, high school students will have the opportunity to tell theirs through musical theatre songs, monologues and dance. This course is designed to help students break out of their shell by exploring what sparked their love for the theatre through songs, original monologues and collaboration in group numbers. In addition, students will learn the concepts of dramatic interpretation while other aspects of vocal technique, articulation and projection will be reviewed as they prepare solos, duets and group numbers, culminating in a final cabaret production. Auditioning & Conditioning Ages: 14–18, Wednesdays, 7:00–8:30 pm Tuition per term: $165.00 Instructor: Jarrett Koski Preparing for a musical theater career requires acquiring and maintaining optimal performance modes. For the dancer, that means a healthy body and a comprehensive understanding of ballet, jazz and tap. For the singer, it means a healthy voice, proper warm up and vocalization techniques and building a versatile repertoire. For the actor, it means an effective resumé
and head shot as well as methods for approaching cold readings and character/script research. This class will give you the tools to enable you stay in all around great shape.
I Can Do That …with Style ! Ages: 8–10, Thursdays, 5:30–7:00 pm Tuition per term: $165.00 Instructors: Jarrett Koski & Hayley Matrai Whether you are already a musical star or just want to explore your potential, this class will guide you in the development of the “triple threat” musical theater skills of acting, singing and dancing. This semester students will explore some of the classic musical theater characters of the Broadway stage while reinforcing the musical theater performance techniques of physicality, vocal pitch, articulation and projection, creating more experienced and confident performers.
Spotlight: Broadway Cabaret–Thoroughly Modern Broadway Ages: 11-14, Thursdays, 7:00–8:30 pm Tuition per term: $165.00 Instructors: Jarrett Koski & Hayley Matrai “Everything today is thoroughly Modern” with Spotlight musical theatre class this semester as we explore different Broadway musicals from several decades and put a modern-day spin on them. Taught by professional actor Peggy Sheffield, this class is for those already working in the TV/film industry as well as serious actors seeking a deeper connection to their roles and a higher level of work. This class is designed to improve existing skills, develop new skills and techniques, and prepare students to work as professionals.

Theater of Wonder Ages: 3–5, Saturdays, 9:00–11:00 am Tuition per term: $155.00, text/materials fee: $29.77 includes tax Instructor: Ruth Ann Rauter The Moon Tree Story is the theme for this magical exploration of Mother Nature’s changes in the autumn season. Children create their own picture books with watercolor painting and bring the story to life through song and dance, pumpkins and props, mime and drama. This creative experience nurtures each child’s sense of wonder and belonging, imagination, and whole child development. Parents may participate in some artistic activities. On the last day of class, students will share their version of the Moon Tree Story with family and friends.

CAREERS IN THEATER Program Theater career training and awareness is offered by The Marcia P. Hoffman School of the Arts to local high school and college students. Master classes in lighting, sound, and technical design will be offered throughout the year, as well as workshops in the ‘business’ of theater – e.g. marketing, programming, ticketing. Students will be able to observe and shadow professionals in the field, preparing them for paid internships in the future. 20
