Welcome to our 2011-2012 Season! The world is changing, and we’re changing with it! One of those changes, as you may have heard, is that, after nearly 13 years as CEO of Ruth Eckerd Hall, I will be retiring. This is my last message to you in a season brochure format. I want to thank our loyal patrons, members, sponsors and the community at large. You are really the stars who have helped Ruth Eckerd Hall thrive. Clearly, success is not dependent on any one individual. I have been blessed to work with a staff and volunteers who are among the best at any performing arts center anywhere. Our staff and our incredible volunteers give their hearts and souls to make the Ruth Eckerd Hall experience very special. Our dedicated Board of Directors has contributed time, energy, expertise, support, advice and their good will, adding richly to our success. Thank you to everyone for helping make my tenure at Ruth Eckerd Hall something I wouldn’t trade for anything. Other changes are happening as well. With this brochure, we are excited to introduce fresh new logos that pay homage to four key visionaries: Ruth Eckerd, Marcia P. Hoffman, and Nancy and Ray Murray. Like these founders and supporters who selflessly contributed their time, their talents and their treasure, and whose signatures inspired these logos, bringing world-class performing arts and education programs to our community has always been our passion. The logos are part of a new branding emphasis reinforcing our commitment to offer you a level of service that sets us apart in the Tampa Bay area and within the national and global performing arts communities.

Ruth Binnicker Swann Eckerd is more than our namesake. She is our inspiration. Motivated to give back to their community, Ruth and Jack Eckerd actively supported nonprofit organizations that focused on children, education, health care, and the arts. Ruth’s involvement in our performing arts center began even before ground was broken. As Ruth Eckerd Hall’s President and CEO Robert Freedman said, “Their contribution made this project happen. It was Jack’s wish for the Hall to be named after Ruth and she was extremely proud of the fact that this building was here for the citizens of Clearwater.” Ruth’s hand was evident in many of the choices made in the formative years of our Hall. It is therefore fitting that the new logo you see here is inspired by her signature, chosen to remind us of our roots and her strong commitment to the arts, her desire to improve and inspire. It is our mission to carry her vision far into the future, honoring Ruth and her legacy by serving the community and the arts she so loved.

With financial assistance from the City of Clearwater, we will expand our offerings at the Capitol Theatre. For movie buffs, we have an exciting new classic film series Tuesday evenings and we are pleased to introduce a new series for those wishing to enjoy classical music in a more intimate setting. We will present more singer-songwriters, emerging artists, and seasoned stars. The incomparable Tom Rush joins us for the first time, and Itzhak Perlman’s daughter Navah, one of the most admired pianists of her generation, will perform for us. On our Main Stage, we welcome our neighbors from The Sarasota Ballet and dancers of The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. Our Broadway lineup features the area premiere of MEMPHIS, 2010 Tony Award®-winner for Best Musical, inspired by events surrounding the birth of rock and roll. We’ll also present the Ruth Eckerd Hall premiere of Beauty and the Beast. For families, we introduce our Time Together Series, with entertainment for all ages. Ruth Eckerd Hall is on the move. Join us for the journey!

The Board of Directors and staff of Ruth Eckerd Hall extend warm congratulations to Robert Freedman on his upcoming retirement and our deep thanks to him for 13 years of dedicated service to the arts and to our arts organization. Robert’s accomplishments during his tenure are many. He oversaw major expansion and renovations of the Hall, including the addition of The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute and the Murray Studio Theater. He has been a strong supporter of arts education and of our youth scholarship winners, facilitating the career advancement of the latter whenever possible. He increased our Broadway involvement and offerings, spearheading efforts to invest in new productions, supporting promising new shows and enabling us to offer first run Broadway touring productions on our stage. Robert worked closely with leaders of the City of Clearwater and helped implement the purchase of the Capitol Theatre and plans for its management and restoration by Ruth Eckerd Hall, part of the ongoing efforts to revitalize Clearwater’s downtown area. He has been instrumental in putting the Hall on sound financial footing. Under his guidance, Ruth Eckerd Hall has been ranked number one in ticket sales among venues of its size during the past decade. Throughout his tenure, Robert has been a tireless advocate of the arts and a champion of diversity in our program offerings, always aware of our mission to create opportunities for visitors and residents of the Tampa Bay area to enjoy many genres of arts entertainment. Robert, we are deeply grateful for all of your efforts to make Ruth Eckerd Hall the worldclass performing arts center that it is today. You leave behind many friends and a lasting legacy. We wish you the very best happiness and fulfillment as you begin your next “act” on a less public stage!

This exciting new ensemble is known for its inventive programming, technical prowess, attention to detail, and passionate performances. Our concert features a new score played to the silent film The Man with the Movie Camera, an avant-garde documentary film about urban life in the Soviet Union known for its use of inventive cinematic techniques. Music is drawn from quartets by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Mosolov, Russian composers active when the film was made in 1929. Voxare has frequently been The New York Times Classical Pick of the Week and received Chamber Music America’s 2010 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Enjoy this gifted and innovative young ensemble and a great classic movie!

This is the true story of Sadako Sasaki, just two years old when an atom bomb exploded over Hiroshima and twelve when she was afflicted with radiation sickness. Legend claims a person who folds a thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish. Sadako began folding cranes, wishing to be well, wishing an atom bomb would never be dropped again. Before her death, she folded 644 cranes. Her friends and classmates folded 356 more to make a thousand. Marcia Hoffman was a woman of extraordinary intelligence, vision and drive. She was involved with Ruth Eckerd Hall from the start and planned the Grand Opening Gala in 1983. Her greatest contribution was the creation of an Education Department. She envisioned a performing arts institute that would be the first of its kind in Florida and would earn national recognition as a leader in arts education, cultivating both artists and audiences of the future. Marcia was the first Chair of the Education Committee. She sought additional space for classrooms, encouraged cooperation with the Pinellas Youth Symphony and local schools, and nurtured collaboration between professionals and non-professionals. She promoted presenting, production and instruction opportunities and developed a comprehensive plan for the institute that now bears her name. Without Marciaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision, dedication, and countless hours devoted to realizing her dream, Ruth Eckerd Hall would not have a performing arts institute. In gratitude and recognition of her extraordinary accomplishments, the Marcia P. Hoffman Arts Education Award was created. It is fitting that the Hoffman Institute logo be patterned after her distinctive signature, akin to an artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s autograph, written on a diagonal.

The Hoffman Institute offers performing arts classes that engage a broad range of interests. Our instruction division is open year-round and sessions are divided into three terms: fall, winter/spring and summer. In an effort to continually provide access to high-quality arts experiences, the Hoffman Institute presents performances both on- and off-site, showcasing our students and local artists through Eckerd Theater Company (ETC) productions, the Evening at the Murray series, and our Artists on the Road program.
