2011-2012
Welcome to our 2011-2012 Season! The world is changing, and we’re changing with it! One of those changes, as you may have heard, is that, after nearly 13 years as CEO of Ruth Eckerd Hall, I will be retiring. This is my last message to you in a season brochure format. I want to thank our loyal patrons, members, sponsors and the community at large. You are really the stars who have helped Ruth Eckerd Hall thrive. Clearly, success is not dependent on any one individual. I have been blessed to work with a staff and volunteers who are among the best at any performing arts center anywhere. Our staff and our incredible volunteers give their hearts and souls to make the Ruth Eckerd Hall experience very special. Our dedicated Board of Directors has contributed time, energy, expertise, support, advice and their good will, adding richly to our success. Thank you to everyone for helping make my tenure at Ruth Eckerd Hall something I wouldn’t trade for anything. Other changes are happening as well. With this brochure, we are excited to introduce fresh new logos that pay homage to four key visionaries: Ruth Eckerd, Marcia P. Hoffman, and Nancy and Ray Murray. Like these founders and supporters who selflessly contributed their time, their talents and their treasure, and whose signatures inspired these logos, bringing world-class performing arts and education programs to our community has always been our passion. The logos are part of a new branding emphasis reinforcing our commitment to offer you a level of service that sets us apart in the Tampa Bay area and within the national and global performing arts communities.
Ruth Binnicker Swann Eckerd is more than our namesake. She is our inspiration. Motivated to give back to their community, Ruth and Jack Eckerd actively supported nonprofit organizations that focused on children, education, health care, and the arts. Ruth’s involvement in our performing arts center began even before ground was broken. As Ruth Eckerd Hall’s President and CEO Robert Freedman said, “Their contribution made this project happen. It was Jack’s wish for the Hall to be named after Ruth and she was extremely proud of the fact that this building was here for the citizens of Clearwater.” Ruth’s hand was evident in many of the choices made in the formative years of our Hall. It is therefore fitting that the new logo you see here is inspired by her signature, chosen to remind us of our roots and her strong commitment to the arts, her desire to improve and inspire. It is our mission to carry her vision far into the future, honoring Ruth and her legacy by serving the community and the arts she so loved.
With financial assistance from the City of Clearwater, we will expand our offerings at the Capitol Theatre. For movie buffs, we have an exciting new classic film series Tuesday evenings and we are pleased to introduce a new series for those wishing to enjoy classical music in a more intimate setting. We will present more singer-songwriters, emerging artists, and seasoned stars. The incomparable Tom Rush joins us for the first time, and Itzhak Perlman’s daughter Navah, one of the most admired pianists of her generation, will perform for us. On our Main Stage, we welcome our neighbors from The Sarasota Ballet and dancers of The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. Our Broadway lineup features the area premiere of MEMPHIS, 2010 Tony Award®-winner for Best Musical, inspired by events surrounding the birth of rock and roll. We’ll also present the Ruth Eckerd Hall premiere of Beauty and the Beast. For families, we introduce our Time Together Series, with entertainment for all ages. Ruth Eckerd Hall is on the move. Join us for the journey!

This four-time 2010 Tony Award® winner (including Best Musical) is a compelling tale of forbidden love, personal sacrifice, smoldering racial tension, and a passion to change the world. It bursts onto the stage with explosive dancing and the irresistible music that heralded the birth of rock and roll. MEMPHIS follows the journey of a white radio DJ and a black club singer ready for her big break. Set in the underground dance clubs of the segregated South and inspired by actual events, MEMPHIS takes us back to a time when a new music was born that changed the world forever.

Do you believe in Santa Claus? Miracle on 34th Street is a perennial holiday favorite, a musical tale by Valentine Davies made famous by the 1947 movie of the same name. It’s the story of the year as Kris Kringle (a.k.a. Santa Claus) goes on trial, accused of being insane because he insists that he truly is Santa Claus. Macy’s becomes the friendly store to shop, two lost souls find each other, and a once cynical little girl rediscovers her childhood through her belief in miracles. This feel-good story is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit. $31, 36, 42, 48
Before he was an Emmy®-winning TV star, Mandy Patinkin was already a Tony®-winning Broadway legend. The Board of Directors and staff of Ruth Eckerd Hall extend warm congratulations to Robert Freedman on his upcoming retirement and our deep thanks to him for 13 years of dedicated service to the arts and to our arts organization. Robert’s accomplishments during his tenure are many. He oversaw major expansion and renovations of the Hall, including the addition of The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute and the Murray Studio Theater. He has been a strong supporter of arts education and of our youth scholarship winners, facilitating the career advancement of the latter whenever possible. He increased our Broadway involvement and offerings, spearheading efforts to invest in new productions, supporting promising new shows and enabling us to offer first run Broadway touring productions on our stage. Robert worked closely with leaders of the City of Clearwater and helped implement the purchase of the Capitol Theatre and plans for its management and restoration by Ruth Eckerd Hall, part of the ongoing efforts to revitalize Clearwater’s downtown area. He has been instrumental in putting the Hall on sound financial footing. Under his guidance, Ruth Eckerd Hall has been ranked number one in ticket sales among venues of its size during the past decade. Throughout his tenure, Robert has been a tireless advocate of the arts and a champion of diversity in our program offerings, always aware of our mission to create opportunities for visitors and residents of the Tampa Bay area to enjoy many genres of arts entertainment. Robert, we are deeply grateful for all of your efforts to make Ruth Eckerd Hall the worldclass performing arts center that it is today. You leave behind many friends and a lasting legacy. We wish you the very best happiness and fulfillment as you begin your next “act” on a less public stage!

This exciting new ensemble is known for its inventive programming, technical prowess, attention to detail, and passionate performances. Our concert features a new score played to the silent film The Man with the Movie Camera, an avant-garde documentary film about urban life in the Soviet Union known for its use of inventive cinematic techniques. Music is drawn from quartets by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Stravinsky and Mosolov, Russian composers active when the film was made in 1929. Voxare has frequently been The New York Times Classical Pick of the Week and received Chamber Music America’s 2010 ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. Enjoy this gifted and innovative young ensemble and a great classic movie!
The New York Times praises them as “imaginative and energetic…insightful and vibrant…polished and vigorous.” The New Yorker calls them “One of the finest young groups to emerge in our current golden age of American string quartets.” Daedalus Quartet brings the ethereal beauty of Shubert balanced with a contemporary piece that demonstrates the broad range of this ensemble’s virtuosity. Winner of Lincoln Center’s Martin E. Segal Award and Chamber Music America’s Guarneri String Quartet Award, Daedalus has assured its place among today’s string ensembles.
Capitol Theatre Among the world’s premier ensembles for nearly three decades, this quartet has been described by The Times (London) as “resilient enough to take inspiring risks and sophisticated enough to see them through with imaginative sensitivity.” Widely admired for their interpretations of Beethoven, Clearwater native Paul Yarbrough and his colleagues of The Alexander String Quartet offer an all-Beethoven evening. Yehudi Menuhin raved: “… unbelievably good Beethoven—in conception, musicality, balance of voices, respect for the score, humor, pathos, emotional projection.” $37, 45

The embodiment of evil, Don Giovanni, a dissolute serial rapist, is charming, wicked, egotistical and unrepentant. He thrives on seduction and is not above murder. Based on the actual escapades of Don Juan of Seville, an aristocratic serial rapist who lived during the 1600s, Mozart’s magnificent musical masterwork is one of unparalleled beauty, considered by many to be the greatest of all operas. The dinner scene in the last act is the epitome of sheer horror for the unremorseful, unrepentant Don. $47, 58

Destinies collide as the womanizing Duke of Mantua and his vengeful court jester Rigoletto weave a fascinating drama of seduction, betrayal, curses and vendettas. Verdi creates an intriguing study in contrasts between good and evil, drama and comedy, honesty and deception. The deformed hunchback Rigoletto, sarcastic and vindictive, cursed by one he has mocked and condemned by his physical appearance to play the “fool,” is none the less a protective and loving father. Despite this nobler side of his character, Rigoletto’s desire for revenge results in tragedy.

Can serious dance be funny? You bet! Since 1974, “The Trocks” have been presenting a playful, entertaining view of classical ballet. They are living proof that men can dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces, and their comic approach is impeccable. Although performances are offered as parodies, this all-male troupe is comprised of seriously talented dancers. The humor is in the choreography. An international dance phenomenon, “The Trocks” are a treat for novices and ballet aficionados alike.
The story of a classic battle between an evil sorcerer and the power of true love is told through the silent beauty and grace of dance accompanied by the magical music of Tchaikovsky. Follow Prince Siegfried on his journey to manhood and authority to reign over his kingdom. As he leaves the carefree whims of youth behind and the time is at hand for him to choose a bride, evil is afoot and temptation lurks. Brought to life with the choreography of the great Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, the tale of Siegfried unfolds. Will love triumph over the sorcerer’s curse?

Ironically, it was a beauty contest that first brought Debbie Reynolds to the attention of scouts from Warner Bros. and MGM (impressed with her lip-synching rendition of a Betty Hutton tune). Known for starring roles in Singin’ in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, her wit, dancing and singing ability, versatility as an actress, successful nightclub and casino acts, and film and television roles, Debbie has proven to be a star with enduring appeal. She has won the respect of her colleagues and the affection of audiences around the world.

It’s rare for a young musician to be compared to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis, and when the musician’s instrument of choice is a ukulele, it’s nothing short of amazing. Redefining his instrument, Jake Shimabukuro conjures sounds from his four-string, two-octave uke unlike anything ever heard. This artist mixes jazz, rock, classical, traditional Hawaiian music and folk creating a unique sound exhibiting technical virtuosity and emotional power. His CD Peace Love Ukelele injects humor and showcases Jake’s lightning-fast skills and dexterity.
The crooner who has likely contributed more to romantic interludes (or dreams of them) than any other is back with his rich, warm, velvet voice and the melodies that have made him so important to American pop music: Chances Are, Misty, It’s Not For Me To Say, Wonderful! Wonderful!, The Twelfth of Never, A Certain Smile and so many more. The sound of his voice evokes memories for countless people of multiple generations. This gracious gentleman whose Greatest Hits album spent almost ten years on the Billboard Top Albums Chart returns with a 24-piece orchestra to put a smile on your face.
Two of the highest profile pianists in contemporary jazz join forces for a unique pairing. Playing two acoustic grand pianos, David Benoit and Brian Culbertson perform some of their best-known compositions along with original music they’ve created together specifically for this project. Combining these two very distinctive styles in an acoustic setting will make for an exciting new concert experience sure to ignite some unexpected sparks! The Capitol Theatre offers a great opportunity to see these gifted and prolific artists in a more intimate setting. $42.50, 59.50

This is the true story of Sadako Sasaki, just two years old when an atom bomb exploded over Hiroshima and twelve when she was afflicted with radiation sickness. Legend claims a person who folds a thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish. Sadako began folding cranes, wishing to be well, wishing an atom bomb would never be dropped again. Before her death, she folded 644 cranes. Her friends and classmates folded 356 more to make a thousand. Her spirit of hope and strength continues to inspire young people around the world to work for peace.

EDUCATION 32
THE
PERFORMING
ARTS INSTITUTE
Marcia Hoffman was a woman of extraordinary intelligence, vision and drive. She was involved with Ruth Eckerd Hall from the start and planned the Grand Opening Gala in 1983. Her greatest contribution was the creation of an Education Department. She envisioned a performing arts institute that would be the first of its kind in Florida and would earn national recognition as a leader in arts education, cultivating both artists and audiences of the future. Marcia was the first Chair of the Education Committee. She sought additional space for classrooms, encouraged cooperation with the Pinellas Youth Symphony and local schools, and nurtured collaboration between professionals and non-professionals. She promoted presenting, production and instruction opportunities and developed a comprehensive plan for the institute that now bears her name. Without Marcia’s vision, dedication, and countless hours devoted to realizing her dream, Ruth Eckerd Hall would not have a performing arts institute. In gratitude and recognition of her extraordinary accomplishments, the Marcia P. Hoffman Arts Education Award was created. It is fitting that the Hoffman Institute logo be patterned after her distinctive signature, akin to an artist’s autograph, written on a diagonal.

The Great American Songbook, Jazz and Broadway
Mike Desselle: A Gift of Blues, Jazz, Bluegrass and Country
Rosemary and Stan return with songs reflecting the rich American music of Broadway and jazz. With the growth of Broadway in the early 20th century came the need to adapt enjoyable songs to the constraints of theater and plot, encouraging the rise of composers like George Gershwin, Vincent Youmans, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. Their songs have endured and are known as the Great American Songbook. Rosemary, Stan and Hoffman Institute performers take us through the Songbook to jazz-influenced Broadway tunes of today. Celebrate this great American music with us! $17, $12 with student ID

Dare to dream the impossible, and Sharon Owens and Sebastian Anzaldo will make that dream seem like reality: Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra, the Chairman and the Diva, on stage together at last! Sharon looks uncannily like Barbra and has the voice to match. Sebastian masterfully re-creates a confident young Frank in his prime, cocky, swingin’ and with the Sinatra swagger. Bringing their show from Las Vegas to Ruth Eckerd Hall, “Barbra” and “Frank” offer many of their greatest hits “their way.” Video clips and goodnatured banter add to the fun.
Vicki Lawrence’s classmates were spot on when they voted her “Most Likely to Succeed.” From her eleven hilarious years with The Carol Burnett Show (which won her an Emmy®) to her gold record for The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia, her TV series Mama’s Family, her hosting of Win, Lose or Draw, Vicki! and Fox After Breakfast, and her numerous stage productions, Vicki approaches everything with a sense of humor, because “Life is much too serious to be taken seriously!” She and Mama share some of that marvelous humor with us.
Seventy Top Ten hits in four years, a GRAMMY® Lifetime Achievement Award, attendance records at venue after venue: it’s difficult to exaggerate Glenn Miller’s impact. In one brief decade, he became the dominant Big Band leader and master of swing. A generation of teenagers fell in love with his unmistakable sound, dancing to In the Mood, String of Pearls, Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Kalamazoo, Moonlight Serenade and more. Gary Tole and the Glenn Miller Orchestra keep the magic alive entertaining the teenagers of yesterday and today!
Sha Na Na is doing its part to make sure that Rock ’n’ Roll Is The “King of Rock and Roll” returns! Here to Stay. Now capturing new generations of fans, the group Once again, “Elvis” will be in the house. This show brings us the best that had its roots in the Columbia University glee club ensemble of both worlds: Scot Bruce as the young Elvis with swiveling hips and The Kingsmen rocketed to stardom after performing at Woodstock just bedroom eyes, and Mike Albert as the glitzy Las Vegas Elvis. The Big “E” before Jimi Hendrix, then in the movie Grease (Screamin’ Scott Band re-creates the authentic Elvis sound for this rock ’n’ roll afternoon. Simon penned Sandy for John Travolta) and on their own TV From Love Me Tender and Are You Lonesome Tonight? to All Shook Up, series for four years. Fans will be treated to At the Hop, The Jailhouse Rock and It’s Now or Never, Elvis left an indelible mark on Wanderer, Love Potion #9, Hand Jive, La Bamba, In the Still of the popular music.
