Dust and Diamonds: Friends of Music Members Celebrated Their Last Concert at the Capitol Theatre Before Renovations The dust settled on the ground in the pre-construction event space as the diamonds shined brightly on a model’s neck at Ruth Eckerd Hall’s private shindig for Friends of Music in midMarch with the talented members of Matchbox Twenty! Before temporarily shutting down the Capitol Theatre for renovations, Friends of Music members had one last rockin’ private show. From old favorites like Push to their new single She’s So Mean, Matchbox Twenty rocked the packed house! Friends of Music continued its fourth season at a construction-themed party Founding Friends of Music members Mike and Roxanne Connor (second and fourth from complete with bejeweled hard hats across the street from the left) with the members of Matchbox Twenty! Capitol Theatre. Members were even able to take photos with a construction bobcat! Funds raised from Friends of Music benefit the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall.
Recently Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO stated, “We are proud to present the exclusive Tampa Bay area premieres of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new The Wizard of Oz on our Main Stage and the brand new musical I Love Lucy® Live On Stage at the all new Capitol Theatre in downtown Clearwater. NEW BEYOND THE STAGE – The grammy® musuem
Congratulations to the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall for being a partner of the GRAMMY Museum’s Music Revolution Project!
Capitol Theatre Closes for Renovations The Capitol Theatre closed in March after a sold-out performance by veteran comic Gallagher, who was hanging up his Sledge-O-Matic at the conclusion of one last tour – Gallagher’s Last Smash. His show was preceded by a ceremony, which saw Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO Zev Buffman, Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos and Gallagher unveil the Capitol Theatre’s final rendering. The rendering hangs above the marquee and gives those who pass by a glimpse of the future of the 92-year-old structure.
From left to right: Mayor George Cretekos, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO Zev Buffman and veteran comic Gallagher express surprise and laughter as Gallagher rubs a piece of watermelon on the Mayor’s tie!
Best of luck to the following students: Alex Gonzalez, Ramsey County, Ben Bailey, Pasco County, New St. Paul, Minnesota Port Richey, Florida
The new Capitol Theatre, slated to open later this year, is undergoing a $7.5 million renovation that will transform it into a customer centric venue that will rival any other theater of its size in the country. While remaining sensitive to the intimacy, acoustics and sightlines that make the current Capitol Theatre special, the new venue will feature a new façade that will reflect the historic past, all new seating for more than 700 patrons, more restrooms, better concession areas, new lobbies, loge boxes, a wraparound balcony, a roof top terrace, a new stage, an expanded backstage area, additional dressing rooms and much more! Additionally, during some of the early stages of the renovations, a painted Wall of Honor listing of Clearwater World War I servicemen was discovered. The 100-year-old Wall of Honor was protected in plaster and for the most part is legible. According to a quote given to the Tampa Bay Times by Jeff Hartzog, General Manager of the Capitol Theatre, “We’ve unearthed a time capsule. We’re looking for a way to preserve it. This is part of our history.” A decision on where and how to display this historic artifact will be forthcoming.
Ruth Eckerd Hall is proud to be involved in the GRAMMY Museum’s Music Revolution Project. The program started last year in Kansas City, Missouri and is expanding to the Tampa Bay area this summer. From July 22 to August 16, 2013, 28 Tampa Bay students from a wide range of locations, which demonstrates the reach of the Hall and the program, ages 14–21, will participate in this free program taught by GRAMMY® Museum staff and featuring GRAMMY® Award-level guest speakers. The Music Revolution Project gives students the opportunity to participate in workshops, songwriting courses, mentoring sessions and have the work they create in the program critiqued by music industry professionals. The goal of the program is to inspire students to think critically and creatively about music, while giving them the tools to help them think about, and try to create, the next great American music genre. “We are thrilled to be expanding The GRAMMY Museum’s Revolution Project into Florida,” said Bob Santelli, GRAMMY® Museum Executive Director, in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times. “Through the passion and commitment of our first-class partners, paired with a dynamic music and arts community in the Tampa Bay region, it is our hope that we can help develop a new generation of innovative music talent.” Ian White, Hillsborough County, Tampa, Florida

Technical Theater Career Training Master Classes Continue to Impact Students’ Lives The third and fourth Technical Theater Career Training Classes were held in February at Ruth Eckerd Hall and in May in the Murray Studio Theater. This unique educational experience enabled 50 local students from three colleges and six high schools the opportunity to participate in a hands-on workshop that focused on audio sound and theatrical production. One of the world’s leading acoustics experts, Gary W. Siebien spearheaded the lecture and presentations on sound. While Ruth Eckerd Hall’s own President and CEO, Zev Buffman led the workshop on production. Production Resource Group (PRG), the world’s leading supplier of entertainment and event technology has been a leading partner on these programs. No other performing arts center in the nation offers this free collaborative opportunity. Additionally, audience members comprised of future students, parents, teachers and close friends of the Hall witnessed first-hand this exciting new chapter in Ruth Eckerd Hall’s history – providing students with technical skills that will help them enter the workforce and begin their careers! Students from Tampa Bay area high schools and colleges participated in four workshops that focused on learning the technical and practical applications of presenting live theater and performances. Stradivarius Society Gala Raises Funds for Classical Programming
Eighth Annual Spring Gala – Rio Carnaval Raises $245,000 Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Eighth Annual Spring Gala – Rio Carnaval was an evening that celebrated fun, fantasy and mystique inspired by one of the greatest parties in the world… Carnaval in Rio DeJaneiro! 350 guests enjoyed an evening dining on stage and on an extension over the theater seats while experiencing the excitement of the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute student performances and dancing to the music of Southtown Fever. Guests participated in a silent auction as well as a live auction with emcee and auctioneer, Jason Alpert. We went paperless and introduced text bidding thanks to Qtego! The evening was catered by Café Ponte. This year’s event raised a gross amount of $245,000 to benefit the arts education programs of the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall making this our most financial successful fundraising event to date. A special appeal also raised funds for Project: Shattered Silence and future expansion opportunities for that project. Thank you to everyone who attended, sponsored and supported the event! If you’re interested in viewing and/or purchasing photos from the Spring Gala event, go to www.cameronhphotography.photoreflect.com, click on Ruth Eckerd Hall and when prompted enter the password springgala. This link will be available until August 30.
The Stradivarius Society Gala was held in February and chaired by Vilma and Zev Buffman. The evening supported the tradition of bringing the finest of national and international classical programming to our community. The evening included performances by the Pinellas Youth Symphony, the Ruth Eckerd Hall Jazz Combo and Brooke Huseby, a jazz singer from Tarpon Springs High School. Additionally, Gladys Douglas Hackworth was acknowledged for her major sponsorship of the event and Marjorie Dimmitt was thanked for previously chairing the event. The evening cumulated with the performance of violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Sam Haywood on the Hall’s Main Stage.

Leading Ladies Luncheon and Check Presentation Held Since their inception 32 years ago, the members of the Leading Ladies have presented an annual donation to Ruth Eckerd Hall. At their May luncheon this year, they presented a check for $30,000. Their total for the year including fundraising, donations and in-kind contributions add up to nearly $42,000. The funds continue their tradition of supporting the arts education programs of the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall. The donation reflected the proceeds from the many Leading Ladies fundraising events held throughout the 2012–13 season including Lost in the ‘50s, Breakfast with Santa, a wine tasting, a Casino Royale event, a Calypso Queen Cruise and a Kentucky Derby party. The Leading Ladies have proudly contributed nearly $2 million to benefit the arts education programs of Ruth Eckerd Hall. Their ongoing commitment to arts education is truly appreciated! From left to right: Joyce Bonomini, Chief Officer of Education, Jan Harroun, President of the Leading Ladies and Zev Buffman, Ruth Eckerd Hall President and CEO hold the $30,000 check presented to Ruth Eckerd Hall by the Leading Ladies.
Volunteers Honored In May, the Volunteer Salute event was held at Countryside Country Club. The event marked the 32nd gathering of the Hall’s volunteers from ushers to administrative support personnel. At the event, volunteers were awarded service pins and Diamond Crystal Awards recognizing each person for the years they have volunteered. A variety of giveaways were also awarded including five Clearwater Beach weekends at various hotels and a Grand Prize of a Royal Caribbean Cruise. All volunteers were presented with a special “thank you” gift of a free appetizer coupon donated by Bonefish Grill. From ushering duties to filing and posting mail, Ruth Eckerd Hall volunteers provide superior services to our members, arts patrons and the community at large. We extend a BIG thank you for their service!

Carroll Cheek’s Legacy
Tribute to Harold Heye
Carroll Wright Cheek, a founding member and past Board Chairman of Ruth Eckerd Hall, passed away in late May. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Carroll obtained a MBA at the University of Michigan, started, owned and ran a highly successful restaurant and by the age of 29 was one of the Carroll Cheek founders of a Bowling Green Banking Company. After earning his CPA degree, he opened several branch CPA offices, established Bowling Green Lumber Company, purchased department stores, started a supermarket chain and later opened stores in Florida. Carroll generously supported several nonprofit organizations including Ruth Eckerd Hall, Eckerd College, Bowling Green University, Morton Plant Mease Hospital and the Long Center. His generosity led to the creation of the Susan Cheek Needler Breast Cancer Center (named for his late daughter) and the Cheek Powell Heart and Vascular Center at Morton Plant Hospital. In 2006 he and his wife, Mabel were named Mr. and Mrs. Clearwater by the Clearwater Regional Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by Mabel, his wife of 71 years, two children, six grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. Stephanie Smith, Ruth Eckerd Hall Chief Development Officer, remembers Carroll fondly, “Carroll served as our Board Chair at a pivotal time in Ruth Eckerd Hall’s history. He took pride in having the wisdom to hire Elissa Getto as Ruth Eckerd Hall’s Executive Director in March 1990 during his term as Board Chairman and helping chart a stable course for the organization.” Stephanie continues, “Carroll and his wife Mabel’s passion for the Hall was infectious! Carroll will be missed but his legacy fingerprints remain on the Hall and with the Ruth Eckerd Hall family.” Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mabel and his family.
Harold F. Heye, a prominent local business man, passed away in late April. He was one of the original benefactors of Ruth Eckerd Hall. Harold was born in Dusseldorf, Germany, he attended Babson College in Wellesley, MA and the Wharton School of Business. Harold served on the Boards of Morton Plant Hospital, Gerresheimer Factories and subsidiaries in Germany and Holland as well as Ruth Eckerd Hall, The First National Bank of Clearwater and Carlouel Yacht Club. He was a Director and co-owner of the High and Dry Marina, Island Yacht Harbor and Pier 60 in Clearwater. Harold was also part of the original team of developers for Island Estates. The Margarete Heye Great Room at Ruth Eckerd Hall, where many fundraising events, community meetings and weddings are held is named in honor of his mother. According to Stephanie Smith, Ruth Eckerd Hall Chief Development Officer, “The family’s gift was not intended to be a public statement but it was to honor Margarete, who also was involved in the community.” Harold resided in Belleair, FL and Dorset, VT and was a long standing member of the Belleair Country Club, Carlouel Yacht Club, was a member of the Rotary Club, Privateers Men’s Club and Ekwanok Club of Manchester, VT. He is survived by his wife, Diane, seven children and 12 grandchildren. Our deepest sympathy goes to Diane and his family. Harold Heye
Charlotte Schoeppl Remembered Charlotte Schoeppl passed away in early February. She was President of the Leading Ladies from 1996–1998. Charlotte was born, raised and educated in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended the University of Cincinnati where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education. Charlotte spent time as a Charlotte Schoeppl teacher and administrator with Cincinnati’s public school system. She worked in a variety of Executive Assistant roles including with the University of Cincinnati’s College of Fine Arts, Walter Schott Enterprises and Carlos Schoeppl & Associates. Charlotte was a past member of the Ruth Eckerd Hall Foundation Board of Directors and the Special Events Committee. She spearheaded the St. John’s Knit Fashion Show and a golf tournament that the Leading Ladies hosted for a number of years. Charlotte also volunteered her time at the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute. She supported a number of Ruth Eckerd Hall’s fundraising events including Spring Gala, Harvesting for Scholarships, the 25th Anniversary Commemorative Painting by Christopher Still, Bacchus and Black Tie and the Setting The Stage For Future Generations capital campaign. Charlotte supported several other nonprofit organizations within the Tampa Bay area including The Florida Orchestra, the North Suncoast Guild, the Fine Arts Society, the Gulf Coast Museum of Art and Abilities. She is survived by one sister. Charlotte will be dearly missed but the legacy of her impact remains strong.

St. Mark Village Joins Ruth Eckerd Hall Family James Douglas Fresh and Carla Chamberlain Fresh are very pleased to join the Ruth Eckerd Hall family. Family is everything to Doug and Carla, as they are the second generation to lead St. Mark Village, a church sponsored, not-for-profit, continuing care retirement community in Palm Harbor, founded by Pastor James H. Fresh, Doug’s father, 33 years ago. They believe that one of the best ways to celebrate the beginning of their 34th year is to be the proud preferred partner for the 2013-14 Adults At Leisure Series. Carla, who is the Director of Sales and Marketing and a life-long lover of the theatre and dance, could not be more excited about this opportunity. She is a great believer in the power of the arts to inspire people, regardless of their age. She says, “When I see our residents return from a performance at Ruth Eckerd Hall, they are always so excited and energized. There really is nothing like live theatre to nourish the mind, body and spirit. Something we try to do every day for our extended family of residents.” Doug, who recently became the CEO, sees the sponsorship as a way to connect with a not-for- profit organization of the highest caliber. Project: Shattered Silence Success Paves Way for Expansion
Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute Students Achieve Great Things
Project: Shattered Silence is a unique project that exposes truths that are within us all by giving voice to one of the most muted groups in America – teenagers. The project pulls together and performs true stories from a group of brave teenagers as taboo as suicide, sexuality and eating disorders. Since it began in 2009, Project: Shattered Silence has been performed in the Murray Studio in the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall to sellout crowds and hundreds have been turned away.
Emily Fredrickson, former Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall student, 2009 Jazz Scholarship winner and jazz trombonist is the first female accepted into the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Emily was a student in the Marcia P. Hoffman Institute’s jazz program for six years. She was the President of the Tarpon Springs Leadership Conservatory for the Arts. Emily was a member of the All County Jazz and Concert Band as well as the All State Jazz and Concert Band. She returned to the Tampa Bay area to Emily Fredrickson, first perform at the 2012 Clearwater Jazz female accepted into the New Holiday Festival. According to Joyce Orleans Jazz Orchestra. Bonomini, Chief Officer of Education at the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall, “Hearing Emily’s composition and the sound of the piece that she played reinforced the fact that the work being done at the Marcia P. Hoffman Institute is truly impacting our industry.”
In its 5th year, the impact of the project caught the eye of our community partner WEDU (local PBS affiliate), who approached Ruth Eckerd Hall about filming a documentary. Through a successful fundraising effort on a website called Kickstarter and an anonymous matching gift, WEDU and Ruth Eckerd Hall began filming the documentary in March and anticipates airing it in a private premiere viewing at the newly renovated Capitol Theatre later this year before it is broadcast on WEDU. Once it’s broadcast on WEDU, a broader audience outside of the Clearwater community will be aware of the outstanding work being done at the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall. The success of this project has paved the way for expansion. As announced at the Eighth Annual Spring Gala, where funds were raised through a special appeal, Ruth Eckerd Hall is dedicated to finding a way to help shatter the silence and give voice to the stories of returning war veterans. Ruth Eckerd Hall is beginning conversations with the Homeless Emergency Project, to identify and develop the project best suited for these war veteran stories.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the special appeals for this project – you helped us make it happen!
Eckerd Theater Company Trailer Gets Wrapped Thanks to B2B Sign Resource
Center Stage Mixed Ensemble Members Perform at National Landmarks
Eckerd Theater Company (ETC) wrapped up their spring 2013 tour, which included visits to the state capital in Tallahassee and California (a new state for their touring roster this year), where they introduced many young students to performances including Woodland Tales. For any of your signage needs, please stop by B2B Sign Resource on U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor and thank them for supporting Ruth Eckerd Hall and the arts!
The Center Stage Mixed Ensemble is an auditioned group of experienced male and female students in grades 9 – 12. With accompanist Bill Cusick and under the direction of Kathy Bawel, this group meets for two hours a week developing a repertoire that they have performed both on and off the Ruth Eckerd Hall campus, including in the Disney Candlelight Processional and Massed Choir and during their recent trip to Washington, D.C. at the Walter Reed Veterans Hospital, at the Kennedy Center, the National Institute of Health, the World War II Memorial and had a master class with the American University Chamber Singers. The trip to Washington, DC was made possible in part by the continued support of the Leading Ladies and the Volunteer Ushers.
Esther Schneider has studied at the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute for over four years focusing on opera voice. She also participated in last year’s 1st Annual Dare to Dream Awards winning the Fan Favorite. Her opera teacher, Rosalia Maresca, informed us that Esther has been accepted to spend the summer at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. This is a great opportunity for Esther and further spreads the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute name across the country as a place where exceptional students study.

Students of Ruth Eckerd Hall / clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo Perform Across the Country In April the members of the Ruth Eckerd Hall / Clearwater Jazz Holiday Combo were on the road and spreading the word about the great students and superior training offered at the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute! Three of our students joined students from across the country when they visited the White House and participated in a special Soulville, USA: The History of Memphis Soul interactive music event with Justin Timberlake, Sam Moore, Mavis Staples and Booker T. Jones. First Lady Michelle Obama was in attendance. This trip was made possible in part with support from the Korabek Foundation. According to philanthropist Lisa Yob who brought the opportunity to us, “This opportunity was life-altering for the students.” The jazz students also competed in the Lakeside Jazz Festival, where they did us proud and won a number of awards! Congratulations to all of our jazz musicians for outstanding performances at both locations. Keep up the great work! And thank you to the wonderful directors – Chris Touchton, Christopher DeLeon and Frank Williams. Landon Korabek Scholarship Awarded
ETC actors stand next to the newly wrapped trailer, which helped them stand out to fellow travelers, compliments of B2B Sign Resource.
In 2011, the Landon Korabek Memorial Scholarship was established by the Korabek Family to honor their son Landon. Landon was a lover of music, specifically the guitar. He died tragically in 2010. Landon’s parents, Greg and Susan, have been members of the Ruth Eckerd Hall family since 1998. The scholarship provides the opportunity for a select student to participate in private music studies at the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall. For the second year, Robin Rives, 15, who has been studying guitar for four years at the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute, has been awarded this scholarship. Robin’s love of music began in the third grade. She is pleased to have found a voice through her music, which has given her an opportunity to discover who she really is. Students with the Center Stage Mixed Ensemble perform at the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.
