[TRADITION-MODERNITY] The site [49*15M] is located by Suzhou River, in the the Bund-Puxi, the famous site of both history and fashion, where the modernity began to grow in the Shanghai. Divided by the urban flow, the site is faced with the Bund-Pudong, where the new merging urban skyline is shaping. Being in an urban space with conflict between tradition and construction, the introduce of the revival is a chance to rebuild the conversation in modern sense.

[NATURE-HUMAN] The natural elements, including native riverside and plantings, help to strengthen the visual height to the human constructions and decorate the body of city patterns, creating the view of modernity.

[HUMAN-HUMAN] The human factors are built up to form the structure of city, so they are divided into the main building and neibourhood. Usually, the main body is tall while the group figures the city as a whole.

[RIVER-NATURE] The water body follows the trend of the riverside (shaped by nature), being embraced by the environment.

[HUMAN-RIVER] The building facing the water is believed to have good fortune. The water itself brings the scenery into the building.

PART3 GARDEN DESIGN

There are two entrances lead to the major space of the garden, featuring diverse impact for people. The public and the private streamline cover the main linear corridor, while connecting the semi-open spaces.

[CROSS SECTION ] THROUGH MAIN SPACE [MOUNTIAN-CARVING GALLERY] Facing the continuous mountain, the gallery goes across the main space of nature part, is a linear space intened for public activities gathering. The sedantary posture and roof-overhang creates a landscape view representing equality and naturalism.

The main sight corridor goes through the cross section of garden(as the inposition view); the depth of sight changes by every step( as the in-motion view), features the three-dimensional space.

The whole space of garden is arranged by the function of usage, including sculpture(by public and private), resting, meeting and transitional space.

[TRANSITION OF THE MAIN SPACE] A mountain crushed into the serial of buildings, creating the purist conversation between nature and human. The size and the shape of the spaces are arranged with the functional and artistic idea. As the two sides interact, the regular spaces gradually change to irregular, posing a distant and semi-transparent view in the main space, proposing a obliquity relationship between public and private.

CROSS SECTION

[FLOATING BOAT] Hided inthe end of the corridor, the master's studio shared a combined view of both public (to the gallery and mountain) and private space (to an individual yard for his own use) through an incerted wall, in order to strike a transparency by balancing two spaces.

Two vertical skins of Jibaou center hold the longitudinal force in structure system (including the joint, steel cable and main framework). Each parallel unit enclose a space of arc-like indoor space.

The joint-point in Jibaou center is a planar force system with a landed hinge-point arranged by a series of polar axis. The load-carrying capability of the landed point is strenghtened by the mitred steel cables.

Space-centripetalism is a combination of planar-system and longitudinal-system. The vertical orderd units connected by the force of centripetal force, created a tridimensional system in form and space.

The corridor structure use the triangle as the basic pattern, form the single unit by growing typos of combining and twisting.

According to the planar line choice, three main stretch point are lifted by scale of activity and sight volume, so as to give way to paths and create shelter for activities.

The site located in the conflicing angle where two main traffic lines join. The design intended to build a urban landmark fitting into the angle, while creating a transparency for traffic needs.

Between the lines of main traffic system, the west side of site facing a busy road, while east side enjoy a community atmosphere of relaxing, which later contribute to the activity distribution.

Two kinds of view are created: transparency and semit r a n s p a r e n c y. T h e f o r m e r connecting the residence and green through non-foundations, the latter set a glass box between open space and inner garden.

1.00km 24 pedestrian density survey

Hongqiao Commercial Center as the first CBD in Shanghai, was shaped in 1980s', now facing the problem of regeneration according to the nearby neibourhood and regional development. The car orientaled traffic system, greening fragment and high density of building brought about the inconvenience for urban pedestrian when go in and out the CBD area. The design intend to build the eco urban walking system by present eco-analysis and solution of regional recyling.

SITE PRESENT ECOLOGY STRUCTURE ANALYSIS AND ABSTRACTION The complex of presence in different scales can be abstracted into 5 systems: existing building system (determined by skyline and urban fabrics), existing underground spaces ,existing greening system (patches, corridor and grids),existing water system (basically storage) and site circulation system. Through the modeling of these 5 elements in ECOTECT, the most important factor influencing pedestrian system, including shadow, radiation, velocity system is formed and shaped, as later abstract the most uncomfortable point (at the same time with the oppotunity to improve) and corridor from the site for refining.
