SCI-ARC : 1GB STUDIO : Center for Land Use Interpretation

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Dockweiler State Beach Park, Los Angeles, CA. 2006

Studio instructor: Margaret Griffin Beaches carry a narrative of space and time. The reliefs left behind are a map of kinetic energy of the recent past, but also become a palimpsest for the things to come. This project studies these layers of movement, where large events are all the small movements combined, and are all surrounded with sound of jumbo jets fading into the horizon. A building that the people who inhabit it, to recognize the site that it is standing on. C.L.U.I. The Center of Land Use Interpretation This building was designed to reflect the layers of movement that take place at Dockweiler State Beach Park. The folded planes that create the walls and roof of the buildings billow over each other at different heights. There are 3 specific heights to represent the 3 layers of movement that happen at this park. The movement on the beach, road, and sky. The skin of the building has large slices cut out of them to represent the prints made in the sand on the beach. Inside the building are different levels of exhibit space where guests can learn more about CLUI and it’s research.

SCI-ARC : 2GA STUDIO : Library for the 21st Century

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Intersection of Wilshire Blvd and Western, Los Angeles, CA. 2006

Studio instructor: Marcelo Spina Studio partner: Josh Tully This project is a multi-use space like that of the Seattle Library by OMA. The concept for our design was to use giant structural “trees” to support the building floors, house the major routes of circulation and create an architectural experience, similar to that of Toyo Ito’s Media Tech in Sendai.

Model photos / left Bass wood concept model of building. Larger members were used on the bottom and grew thinner as it reached the top. Model photos / next page Different models used to show program, circulation and concepts. 14

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Lugano, Switzerland 2007

Studio instructor: Ludavica Molo This project is based on observation and the study of public transportation and movement along the river in Lugano.

Masterplan

The urban piece that I’m proposing is a series of white steps that move as 3 dimensional bands along the river bank. Along the river bank are bus stops as well, that also ‘appear’ as slow moving waves of stone emerging from the ground to create a bench or a metal handrail. Deadend Plan

SCI-ARC EXCHANGE : KYOTO SEIKA UNIVERSITY : JAPAN STUDIO : Shimbashi Research Center for Movement

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Shimbashi Station, Tokyo, Japan 2007

Studio instructor: Greg Walsh The site for this building was located underneath the metro rail road lines but also exposed to the street level in Shimbashi, located in one of Tokyo’s larger business areas. The project was to design a research center for movement. There are many studies of movement found in Japanese culture and this center would be a place to study multiple facets of those studies. There would be a theatre where performances would range from the ancient art of Kabuki and Noh to the modern dances of Buto. The center provides an area for martial arts, tea ceremony house, a research library, and media center for people to learn more about movement. The floors of this building are moving vertically up and down to create 4 very different giant wave sections. The spaces created between the moving bands are the spaces used to perform or experience the movement of people and architecture. In plan the floor looks like it is divided into 4 long bands along the site but in section they are, in a sense, ‘moving’.

Drawing / right Section through the building to show moving floor plates that create ramps and swooping ceilings. Model images / next page Images to the left show the final model and to the right, sketch models in early concept design. 22

SCI-ARC EXCHANGE : KYOTO SEIKA UNIVERSITY : JAPAN STUDIO : ENSTUJI HOUSING PROJECT

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Enstuji Temple, Kyoto, Japan 2007

Workshop with student participants from: École Spéciale d’Architecture Kyoto Seika University SCI-Arc One of Japan’s oldest temple, famous for it’s Shakkei (“borrowed view”) view is being threatened by a new urban development. The construction of these new suburban houses were planned to be built directly in front of the famous view at Enstuji Temple. This workshop was an international experiment to collaborate design perspectives from Europe, Japan, and the USA to find a solution of the obstruction of the Shakkei view at Enstuji Temple. Collaborative Effect was the name of my team and we created a tiered housing system that maintained the building height requirements and also tried to incorporate new shakkei views in the houses themselves. Team Members: Ana, David, Takashi Kudo, Ruth Kim

SCI-ARC : GRADUATE THESIS : Finding Sanctuary

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Mallerdee Estate, Williamsburg, Virginia 2009

A person’s sanctuary can be a song, a room, in a building, an experience, with nature, or just time spent intimately with another person. Sanctuary is a place of rest and refuge; it is a place of magic and spiritual moments. This project is the threshold of the investigation of spiritual and architectural theory and the research of the anatomical qualities of spiritual spaces found in art and architecture. Spiritual spaces are the spiritual moments that one experiences when realizing something amazing in a painting or is overwhelmed by the majesty of a great mountain view, or even the fear of what lies hidden in the morning mist. This spiritual retreat center will provide opportunities of realization, growth, meditation, and rest.

Model image / right Interior view of final model in the sanctuary. Model was made of pour stone, laser cut acrylic, 3-D print Image / next page 6 drawings representing 6 conceptual sculptural spaces where the buildings of the retreat center would be built. 34

LAND : UNA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Century City Mall Los Angeles, California; 2006

UNA is a women’s clothing boutique that has 4 locations throughout Los Angeles county. The store located in Century City Mall in West LA was custom designed by LAND from the storefront to all the fixtures and furniture inside. As a staff architect for LAND I helped build the models for this store and made the construction documents (with details of fixtures) that were sent to the contractors and craftsman.

MICHAEL MALTZAN ARCHITECTURE : One Santa Fe Apartment

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Downtown Los Angeles, California 2008

Located in the artist district of downtown Los Angeles, this residential building will become the longest building in the LA area. It will also house commercial and retail space and may even double the size of the community in this area. The building is across the street from SCI-Arc and adjoins the MTA mechanical station. The building spans over 1/4 mile and also connects to the 1st street bridge. I was first highered at MMA to work on the working model for One Santa Fe and have had the pleasure to also help with the window pattern, and other drawings for this building. The budget for this developer project is roughly $110 million.

LANDSCAPE DEVELOPMENT

Chengdu, China

PARCELS 1 AND 2

2009

Luxe Lakes is a residential developer who is planning a whole new city in the suburb area of Chengdu. A river is being rerouted in the area to flood this new city to create canals and the new Luxe Lakes residential area. MMA was asked to come up with concept buildings for 2 of the parcels on this massive urban site. I was on the team that help build the concept package. Everyone on the team did different schemes in unit stacking, formal massing studies, structural possibilities, and was each asked to focus on an area of the package. My main contribution to the concept package was the facade possibilities. The building high rise residential towers that MMA designed would need to accommodate many balconies and my job was to collaborate with the head design manager and create options for the pattern of the balconies and as well create a facade that would work with the overall design of the building.

FREELANCE DESIGN

JEFF KINGSLEY

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Venice Beach, California 2006

Jeff Kingsley is a sculptor in Venice Beach California who mostly creates large scale sculptures that either are related to music and time. Sequence, sound, and movement are all elements that undeniably present in his work. Jeff, asked me to create for him the backdrops for his pieces. The drawing on the right is of Jeff Kingsley’s time sculpture piece ‘8-hour Shift’. The sculpture is a large reflective disc that rolls along it’s designated path from one end to the other in the time span of an 8-hour shift that starts at 9AM and ends at 5PM. The sculpture sits in front of a corporate building and is meant for those who encounter it to see a reflection of their lives as they complete their 8-hour sequence of work.
