ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO 2018 - 21

RUTU KEVADIYA

This portfolio is a collection of past three years’ academic and other curricular activites related to architecture which helped me to pursue and further enhance my ideas and skills.

For me, architecture is a profession that brings together all disciplines in order to realise the dream and the opportunity that it has to turn the imagination into reality.

HURST HOUSE

The project brief was to design a residence for an author whose book we had read during the semester, and the design should reflect the author’s character, attitudes, and preferences, as well as what the book represents.

Writer’s Retreat Charodi, Ahemedabad 52 Sqm

The site is located in Charod village of Ahemdabad and was a part of a natural depression in the earth that would transform into a lake during the monsoon season, and the studio was further defined by the use of timber roofing structure that was requested. 5

Design Evolution

Mario Puzo, author of “The Godfather”, was very calm and nature lovered person. So, giving a window with a view of the lake and green space in surroundings was major concept and defining a thin boundary between work space and public or family space was kept during deign which was achieved by corridor. We learned about the site analysis, topographical conditions, architectural expressions, climatic response, and construction technology.

CURST CAFE CENTRE Material Studio Nirma University, Ahmedabad 980 Sqm

The idea was to provide a space where students can feel peace- their own space and a platform where interaction among the various institutes’ stundetns will take place. Site was located in the campus of Nirma University conected to SG Highway. Covered with numbers of trees, idea was led to diffused light coming from the filter of trees which wil be again filtered by material exploration.

Exploration of two diff. Material like stone-modular and steel-longitudinal were executed with layers of levels. Three different spaces - cafe, exhibition space and expression space should be interacted with each other was the challenge. So, giving a percolated roof is the one way to combine the spaces which creates a fluid shadow pattern throughout the day.

NIR-VAN HOUSING

As name suggests, site was mix of water and densed trees areas which reflect the locality of Valsad where the site was located. Housing for locally settled villagers and also as a weekend house/villa for nearby cities was the basic program.

Housing Studio Magod, Valsad 5500 Sqm

Concept behind this was to create more close to the nature while adapting affordability and privacy.

17

Basic idea was to giving back to community or site or nature to what contexts have. So, inspired from local culvert, common public areas like Ghats and Community areas like shops were kept near to the lake. Adding to this, lake development and it usage for communal purpose, walkway was introduced on the periphery of the lake. Peripheral circulation for vehicles and pedestrian for internal circulation was also inspired from local settlements of different communities. Keywords : Common Public Area Close to Nature

Individual units were designed in such a way that all the spaces get outer connection with surroundings and feel very close to the nature. For that, most of the spaces open into Veranda or Semi open space that can be used throughout the day and still maintain the privacy of individual. Sitting height walls act as a psychical boundary of the unit but yet feel wholeness of the space which also helps to define backyard and frontyard. Double heighted living room connects upper bedroom with climatic responses by sloping roof as context has high precipitation. Locally available materials and vernacular structure and roofing system adapted by the time was kept simple and affordable.

Climatic responsive Strategies : 1. Creating shaded staircase section which also acts a buffer to the working space and reduces the solar gain inside the working spaces. 2. Shading on west and east significantly reduces the solar heat gain. 3. Installed solar panels on the roof vertical garden on the south facade provides shading and insulation to the building envelope. 4. Solar Panels lifted to be able to use the terrace freely.

Location : Rathkuria, Rajasthan

Bu The Concept is inspired from forest, in which trees are located at different proximities creating voids in organic fabric of different sizes. Forest trees are then simplified into tree clusteer, which becomes the inspiration for the roofing of bus stop shelter. The roofing was further modified into singular organic canopy with structural columns on the opposite two sides to free the space in between. A vitruvian man is imagined in a glass sphere put right next to each other to derive anthropometric relation of spaces, while circular demarcations on the floor restricts social gathering and defines walkways. The shops, toilets and ticket counter are of cylindrical forms: Singular and in pair of different diameter made from sun dreis bricks to correspond the organic nature of the shelter.

Installation - Courtyard, C Block, NU Canopavilion | 2020 Communication is the major aspect in field of architecture weather it is with professionals or senior - junior. Idea was to create an perforated canopy with explorations of material with different properties like BAMBOO and TENSILE WIRE. Tensile fabric was added for indirecting intengible light on the steps and sittings. Creating double curved arch with 16 members of different sizes and intersecting each other while resting one on the above. Arch was inspired from the existing building expression of the building.

Tensigrity Dome | 2019

Courtyard of the institution building is the most used space for education and learning from each other. This is the place where one can see their both past and present at a time. Exploring circular shape in response to sqaure shaped courtyard for centrality using bamboo and tensile wire. Basically two modules, one pentagon and triangle shaped for achieving spherical shape of the dome and major challenge was to rest it on the ground. So, another module of 4 bamboos were introduced and tied with peripherial wire.

Joinery of the bamboo with wire was kept very simple and affordable. Steel glass with rubber gasket was used for passing out the wire from the bamboo and stucked with epoxy.
