01 OBJECT(S) OF RECONCILIATION Relooking at the nature of Borella’s public spaces Sri Lanka’s Civil War (1983-2009) has led to the erosion of everyday public spaces. My dissertation research made visible three architectural strategies through which the erosion of public space was made possible in Borella, a residential neighborhood in north-east Colombo, partial programmatic erasures and alterations, fortifications and policing regulations. To operationalize this question, I ask: How can programs and built-form contribute towards provoking chance encounters and pause to facilitate interaction between strangers and acquaintances in public space? The programmatic, formal and spatial exploration advances two strategies in a mass housing scheme and a potential public space along a canal edge: 1.OBJECTS OF COLLABORATION, which is a set of play spaces structured around musical instruments that invite collaboration between participants. 2.URBAN LIVING ROOM, which is a set of spaces structured around a new interpretation of Colombo’s old community centers in the emerging urban context. Through these strategies, I explore how my design creates possibilities of chance encounters and pause in everyday life and during events in these public spaces. Since the aim of my dissertation was to analyse how various kinds of public spaces in Colombo are currently used by people, and how the civil war has affected their use, I chose to conduct a ‘case study’ of public spaces in one neighbourhood. This study area presented me with a diverse public spaces of various scales established during the different stages of Colombo’s development such as a marshland, canal edge, stadium, streets, community centre, courtyard among buildings, children’s park, temples and front yard and back yards of individual houses. My rationale for the choice of these diverse public spaces is based on Chakrabarty’s (1991) proposition of the fluidity and intertwining of the ‘private’ and ‘public’ realm in the South Asian context.
I chose to represent my analysis of the transformation of public spaces in Borella through ‘graphic novel’ type of stories, each narrated through a central character who takes a trip down the memory lane to explain their changing nature.

An Urban Living Room With the site situated between a canal edge and a bomb stricken stadium, this site was developed as set of spaces structured around a new interpretation of Colombo’s old community centres in the emerging urban context. GIZ, showed signs of developing a heritage walk around the stadium. Taking that as a base point, I developed programs like an ‘Archive ‘, that holds the collection of historical documents and records with respect to the context, a story telling space - a second interpretation of the Archive that involves residents as resources for gathering first hand information, an open to public lecture space that doubles up as a roof to the back office for GIZ, workshop spaces. Thus allowing for multiple workshop spaces that allowed for stimulating diversity and disrupting fixed ideas and expanding the vision of community. Alongside an open air theatre as a provision for street dramas that portrayed multiple issues and ideologies.

OBJECTS OF COLLABORATION
Came from a need to develop a playscape that went beyond the everyday parks and invited the users to collaborate within each entity that was designed as a musical object that created space within and around it. The space dwelled within the work of Tschumi’s theory of event and everyday spaces with programs like coaching class that doubled up as a platform for fruit picking by the adjacent wood apple trees, music room that opens out as a stage for performance spaces, amphitheater seating that allows for everyday gossip and a library as an extension to the existing one that includes an open news paper reading section for the elderly (a very popular outdoor activity in other parts of the city) that also translates as an alternative to the otherwise provided modern ideas of assertive security.

02 OF MULTIPLE PUBLICS AND CANALFRONT REGERATION Relooking at the city’s waterfront in order to make it all inclusive. Vijayawada a part of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh, is sited on the banks of Krishna River. During the British rule, East India Company constructed a canal system to irrigate 5.80 lakh acre for production of food in the region. It faced huge influx of population with industrialisation and establishment of Autonagar. This influx led to development of slum along it’s canals therefore the canal water started to be used for other activities part from irrigation. In the process of development, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation envisions a singular imagination of public space along the canal fronts which advances recreation and leisure tourism as its chief activities. The spatial manifestations of this vision translate into fenced, green parks with jogging and cycling tracks, planted embankments and meditation centres. These amenities not only facilitate access to a particular kind of public during specified timings but are also based on the premise of relocating “Huttings” inhabited by low income communities to the city’s peripheries using a rationale of incongruent use on a flood prone area. The Kothavanthena Canal Hutting located on Ryves Canal presents one such case. We find multiple users of public space along this canal front: dhobi ghats, community toilets, temples and spaces for listening to church masses, a city-level coconut distribution market, evening food stalls, and even men playing cards along the edge.
MY PROJECT ASKS: What could be the architecture of canal front regeneration that addresses these multiple publics without causing harm through dislocation? Fifth Year Studio | 2018 | Rohit Mujumdar, Neera Adarkar | Vijaywada, India.

Located at the intersection of the entry to the settlement and Annadana Samajam Street the Tower of Play is envisioned as a series of decks floating within the follie. The tower adds to their existing play area ie. dhobi ghat and affords a different activity within each deck. Taking the hot climate of Vijaywada into consideration, the tower reinterprets the idea of a Tree House and submerges itself in a grove of trees on the south side. Overlooking the canal, the Tower of Study provides a safe environment for the settlement kids to take a book along in their next gathering space. In addition to providing a shWade during the afternoons, the follie contains multiple configurations of seating for a child to engage with.

03 INCUBATING INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT Redefining housing with the growing need for worker’s housing typology in Mysore. The study began by analysing the the emerging context for housing Industrial workers in Mysuru and articulates its implications for speculating one design scenario based on a five day field study conducted. On the basis of this research, it can be concluded that there is an emphasis on the growth of industrial sector in Mysuru, as a result, small scale industries are looking at hiring migrant labour from the nearby villages in order to cope up with the demand. Currently depending on the category of labour, multiple typologies of housing are provided. The issue arises with blue collar job labourers who can’t afford for a stable house and are therefore accommodated on site by the individual industrialist in the form of shanties. The project relooks at the housing for these migrant labours along with a training institute that can also house different machines required in Industries that the Industrialist find difficult to acquire single handedly. Over a period of time, these industries might get saturated, as a result it is important to think about equipping these trainees with softer skills necessary for entrepreneurship which allows industries of different kinds to emerge rather then just expanding the current industrial sector. 05 SQUIGGLES IN A FOREST Relooking at Mumbai’s waterfront development. The site is located between the slum and a five star hotel. As a result two different classes of peopl e use the space in completely different ways. The paved plaza is used by the elite for their morning exercises, whereas the side front is used by the dwellers as open grounds for defecating. The project looks at creating a space where both the classes can co - exist at the same time in a mutual environment. It uses farming as the nucleus for driving the entire project. The idea of organic farming and farmers market are popular among the elite but are actually practised by the weaker sections creating a connect between the two and eliminating the middle man. Other programmes like jogging track, cycling track, juice bar, yoga zone, kids play area compliment farming and at the same time become primary reason for users to come to the locality. The market then becomes a series of pit stops on their route.

The third intervention is a market designed along the bazaar street. With one edge adjoining the busy street the intervention becomes a series of interactive punctures done within the facade to use them as furniture for pop up eateries throughout the day. These punctures then translate onto the roof in the form of multiple skylights that can be adjusted according to the different times of the day. The seating provided acts as a buffer between the busy street and the market which can be used by the old occupants of the town to while away their afternoons.

With the brief being to conserve, collect rain water, what alterations can one make to the existing school building in order to make it Net Zero wrt its water consumption, I deviced a system of self transporting robots that collect water during the monsoons and increase the overall rainwater catchment area without the need for a hard surface to collect it in the first place. These devices would then be able to cling themselves along the facade as and when required.
