STORY BEHIND THE UNBELIEVABLE CHALLENGE This is a campaign that inspired architects from all over the world to come up with new ideas for Ruukki Construction and changed one man’s life. Participating in competitions is an everyday job for architects and a natural way of becoming familiar with certain construction materials. Their interest is driven by fame and references. We planned an ideas competition to design a logistics centre. The starting point was Ruukki’s innovative products, which are suited to even the most challenging conditions. The client who ordered the new ideas for the logistics centre is world-famous. His business idea is to fulfil people’s wishes and to deliver them once a year, in one night. This man is Mr Santa Claus. The campaign site drew visitors from all over the world. A lot of time and effort was put into the competition proposals. The first prize was an internship at Snøhetta, one of the world’s most renowned architecture and design agencies. Campaign surpassed all expectations in terms of the number and quality of the competition proposals as well as the worldwide recognition.

8 THE UNBELIEVABLE CHALLENGE
WORDS FROM THE JURY Aim and purpose The competition organisers share a conviction that the general quality of our living and working environment could be drastically improved by rethinking our approach to the architecture of mundane buildings. The competition was organised to explore this possibility thoroughly. It was aimed at young architects, partly because the organisers wanted to offer great opportunities for up-and-coming designers, but most importantly because this would provide the best opportunity to come up with truly fresh ideas.
Ideas with a huge variety of starting points The participants were asked to present an idea that would improve the cityscape or the buildings in areas dominated by large, single-storey structures found all around our urban settlements. The outcomes of the idea were to be demonstrated through a logistics centre for Santa Claus, located in the city of Oulu. As the form of the “big idea was purposely not specied, the jury was faced with a group of ideas based on product or technology, cityscape, building mass, social innovation, etc. as starting points.
General level was high The jury was genuinely surprised at both the sheer number of proposals and the amount and quality of thinking that had obviously been invested in the competition by the entrants. Almost all proposals presented an idea that would have been feasible under some circumstances. Some of the ideas were able to identify possibilities for improving the building type in general. The best proposals were also carefully thought through on all levels, starting from sustainable land use to detailed technical solutions.
Success in achieving the goal The competition as a whole made it clearly apparent that the building type in question can be improved drastically in terms of eciency, architectural quality and sustainability. The winner and the other awarded entries all portray very different kinds of ideas. The true value of the competition results lies in this variety. By combining these ideas in real-life projects, it would be possible to take a big leap forward in the way these large warehouse-like buildings contribute to society and deliver value to their owners.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE The strongest element in the design is responding to the challenge of ideas. The idea can be used invarious situations. The strength of this proposal is being able to exhibit an idea of surprise and magical character within the building itself. The magic happens at night-time on the building’s façade and there’s a link to the investor – Mr Santa Claus. It is feasible and innovative but not futuristic. It is also well thought-through, from land use all the way to detailing. The proposal presents an idea of making the most visible façade and the front of the building a magical element that could both integrate the building into its surroundings and highlight whatever aspects of the building or its functions are desired. It is realised by simple, feasible means using both technical solutions in the exterior wall and the forest in front of the building. The idea could be realised without sacricing any of the practical or economic aspects of the logistics centre. and it delivers a powerful eect that the jury felt would add value to many buildings and their users. It provides understandable solutions for energy eciency and attempts to introduce a lot of good thinking on how to utilise this within the building. It also demonstrates a good understanding of the local situation. The proposal tries to embrace and enhance the function of the building as a hub for new technology in addition to the logistics centre – it connects well with Oulu as a city.

NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE The design is a building that is invisible at daytime and becomes visible when night comes - just like Santa. The invisibility effect is achieved by using a façade of photovoltaic membrane and a two way mirror membrane that would make it visible during the day due to the natural landscape’s reflection into it – also helping it integrate with the natural surroundings.

S.M.L.XL. LOGISTIC The design creates an architectural prototype where its formal language derives from logical sensibility: a structure that is pragmatic, sensible and elegant in its function and its form. S.M.L.XL is applied to the network-like hierarchy of logistical operations, from the small centralized administrative hub, to the extra large distributional system, all activity are dispersed from the center, while at the same time interconnected to one another.

AT THE SPEED OF DREAM The design imagines Santa´s logistics center as a trail of his sleigh in flight from Perävainio to Korvatunturi during one of his several job´s travel. SANTAPOLE Dear Santa, I am writing you as I have heard about the competition for your new logistic center. To be very briefly and save your time, I will go straight to the point. The Concept. The whole project is about ones’ experience. All myths that your old profession holds and its future with fast development says at once that curiosity and new proficiency is the key of everything. Where Tradition and Innovation are living together in a fulfilled marriage the link between Now and Tomorrow is built. The SantaPole is an idea built on this kind of experience. The place where you cannot see the chaos or the constant movement, the logistic core, at the first glimpse from outside, but as a person you intuitively know that something new, something unseen is behind it. N

SANTAPOLE
The SantaPole welcomes strangers with a softly dim lighted wooden house‐the main entrance‐ and gives an opportunity for a Magic, new possible experience to happen. The stone wall behind it only highlights that there is something about myth, the story. After you enter the building, the wide ramp takes an incomer straight to the main lobby, the inside plazza, where you can choose your destination, where all the movement is happening, the Now moment. Here the main lobby connects all functions and has an open view to the workshop space from above the loading docks and all the action there, where the Tomorrow is happening. The experience might be sharpened because it is possible to walk all perimeter of a workshop zone and take a glimpse at all stores. The offices are established on the second floor, to keep all Santas’ friends concentrated during the working hours. Here they have and open view to the roof surface of the Innovative part (Tomorrow),where new technologies shows up to collect solar energy and helps to maintain building during dark nights. The SantaPole suggests you to feel the process of experience, to understand it step by step and to wake up your curiosity. Well, Santa, this is my idea briefly about possible new but in a way very old logistic center. Best wishes and Merry Christmas!
The whole project is about ones’ experience. The idea is artistic, magical and mysterious, yet poetic. The Santa Pole welcomes strangers with a softly dim lighted wooden house and gives an opportunity for magical new possible experience to happen. The building is a focal point within the empty surroundings.

The Santa’s gift for local community is the world’s largest (ice)climbing wall, which revitalizes the area and becomes socially vibrant space. Simple logistics center with fancy and usable facade, not only hides the Christmas mystery inside, but also reflects the changing cycles of nature. It becomes the symbol of modern Santa and attracts people from Oulu, whole Finland and the rest of the world.
Mr. Santa Claus is a responsible person, who care about people and try to make the world a better place. On the other hand, building typical logistics center can be harmful to urban environment. But what, if it becomes a gift for citizens? As long as Finns love winter sports and they can do them for over 200 days a year, they hardly have any opportunity to climb mountains. Finland is mostly flat country with mountains on far
north. The building will give them opportunity, not only to climb in the summer, but also to iceclimb in winter. It might become a biggest ice climbing wall in the world, being a place of active rest for amateurs, whole families and even professionals. It’s an attractive and livable social space, that offers an unforgettable experience and present the most important values that Santa represents.
IDEA
2 // SMART LOGISTICS CENTER The project redefines the logistic center. Turns its disadvantages into assets: +vast car parking becomes friendly and open green space welcoming visitors; +huge walls, usually empty and overwhelming, are a place of human activity and main attraction; +office workers can be proud, not looking at car park, but on happy people behind the window.
Overall, it’s a simple logistics center, that has energy effective shape and is economically constructed with common solutions. The only difference is the fancy and usable second facade, that influence the surrounding.
are free to walk around the iced building, try to look inside, but the secret has to last.
3 // MYSTERY INSIDE
For over 200 days a year, when temperature falls below zero, the facade becomes covered with ice. When ice melts, traditional climbing walls unveil. In the winter building fits in with a snowy Finish landscape, while in the summer its whiteness becomes a symbol and reminds of upcoming winter and next Christmas.
When it comes to visitors curious of the Christmas presents mystery, just like in Korvatunturi, they won’t unveil it here. They

CLAUD NINE On this project, three essential elements were treated. Each on a scale. The first scale is the one of the attraction. The second that of the comfort of the worker and finally that of the energy performance of the building. For a long time, the industrial space is considered by being a boring space. A workspace wherethe minimum of comfort is offered. The idea in this project is to create a comfortable workspace, andlet’s not forget that our customer is Santa Claus personally. Thus the concept is to create a placeattracted by all, a little bit similar to the fact that we see during movies. Something which would looklike the factory of chocolate factory of the movie ‘Charlie and the Chocolate factory’. A place wherethe color creates aspecial dynamism. The space will not only be attractive from the outside but from the inside too. Every workspace has a direct view on the central dynamic green space. The idea is to bring spring in autumn. Create a space where it will be beautiful all year long.

SITE PLAN
Scheme The scheme considers a comprehensive solution with a variable numbers of storage modules (from 4 to 8) linked by a central handling spine to connect all the activities. Three “service boxes” with double elevators between two modules allow to move all the goods from the ground level to the higher levels. The “service boxes” also contain staff stairs and lifts, all staff support spaces and the main parts of the technical plants. A double loading bay beneath each module allow to park into two truck each (4 loading bay/8 trucks parked). The possibility to build from two (or four) up to eight modules in the area ensures a great level of flexibility and fast changing to all the system. At last, an head building that contains offices, main lobby and welcome areas for visitors, is located at the end of the handling spine, close to the drop off area.
THE CLIP The design creates a tall attractive landmark for the surrounding areas and reduces the footprint in the landscape to preserve the all around nature. This landmark, a sort of visionary architecture, is a four divided tall building that works to emphasize and to inspire a new cityscape.

According to the brief document, the purpose is to densify all the logistics areas, so the concept is to design a four level and 60 meters high building to avoid sprawl all around. Also the outdoor car parking is located into a dense drawing area also for not having problems to the future expansion of the building modules.

CONE FOREST The majority of Christmas symbols represent a triangle for example a fir-tree, Santa’s cap and a snowman. The design follows the form of a triangle for harmonious distribution. The functions of the logistics center are arranged by the size and degree of importance – from bottom to top. For example Santa’s room is located on the top of the building.

CONIFER The design is based on triangle theme that serves as a basis for all crucial elements of the buildings such as construction, elevations and skylights. The “head” of the building contains majority of rooms, while “back” of the building consists of four storage areas concentrated around sightseeing with visitors’ footbridge. The design is based on triangle theme that serves as a basis for all crucial elements of the building such as construction, elevations and skylights. Triangle refers to conifer motif as an equal background for Finnish landscape and a symbol of X-mas tradition strongly connected with Santa’s activity. The ‘head’ of the building contains majority of rooms, while ‘back’ of the building consists of four storage areas concentrated around sightseeing with visitors’ footbridge. The design of the site is an invitation to discover Santa’s world.

TOUCH AND RECORD
Mikolaj Twardowski
Who is the Santa Claus? Does he really exist? If so, how do people see him? There are many questions that have been bothering us for ages: the answers might be simple and easy but are they ever satisfying? The only changing thing is our reaction to these questions. From kids' fascination and boost up their imagination to adults' indulgent grin. Although we all 'know' the attributes of Santa Claus such as wide honest smile, sleigh lled with presents, his reindeers and sometimes bottle of Coca-cola, we might have forgotten the true reason behind his existence. The question therefore should be 'who is the true Santa Claus'?

Ball detaches from the cloud and come back to the ground. I believe that Santa Claus is an pure idea. An idea about giving, sharing positive emotions and caring. Gifts are only the point in time, without emotions they are only things. What matters are feelings and commitment that people put to create heartwarming Christmas atmosphere. Inspiring idea of sharing the positive energy. What really counts is not the unboxing time but every second person EXPECT ON this point in time. The period se in time, when people show friendships, love, sincerity . When the 'ENERGY OF GOOD PURE EMOTIONS' is born.
EMOTION CLOUD Santa Claus is a pure idea about giving, sharing positive emotions and caring. Gifts are only the point in time, without emotions they are only things. Wishes are files with emotions and the medium are interactive balls. Before every Christmas time all the balls create a cloud that continuously changes due to the passing time, emotions or weather conditions.
How to materialie this idea? Wishes are les with emotions and medium are interactive balls. I imagine thousands of wishes loaded in interactive spheres. This makes all the positive emotions capable of transferring from our souls into the world. Thousands of balls = Thousands positive feelings, dreams. Recalling an idea of 'A Christmas Carol' might be necessary to make it happen. I am convinced that presents should be put aside leaving the gap to be lled with positive emotions and good deeds. IN BETWEEN SKYLIGHTS AND SHELVES Santa´s logistics center is defined by the organization of three volumes. The main building for the logistics center and two warehouses each divided in two separated areas. The main building, with a reduced height settles as almost as a rock in the landscape. This building is directly connected to the green area in the site.

JÄTKÄNKYNTTILÄT The shape of traditional Finnish log stove inspires the concept. Jätkänkynttilä is a simple heat source used instead of common campfire. The hearth of the jätkänkynttilä is fire located on the bottom of the log. There´s four hub buildings located on the north of the site. The office building is the center of the complex and it is located at the top of the hub buildings. All buildings are connected with the office.

KALEIDOSCOPE Santa´s logistics center should be functional and magical, universal and unique. Due to that, the plan is really simple: an empty inside cuboid with a core, like box with a present. The facade represents the extraordinary image of the building. The skin of the building is like wrapping paper for a gift. It consist of the colorful, demi-transparent or reflective glasses or mirrors, which provides not only the privacy and a lot of light but also the possibility to observe activities going inside.

valley is created. In the basement level, this valley serves as a connection between the two peaks, joining the areas of production to the packaging and distribution center. In the ground floor, this valley provides ample public space to enjoy warmer days. It is also the main path to approaching the project.

KORVATUNTURI 99999 Finnish tradition places Santa Claus in the mountains of Korvatunturi, surrounded by nature where he hides his workshops in the three peaks. The concept reinterprets the three peaks of Korvatunturi in three distinct triangular volumes. The first peak represents Santa Claus’s room, where there´s a perfect view to the remaining two peaks.

LINKING BETWEEN Santa´s logistics center links urban, functional and natural together. The design combines the near by urban areas to the center like a paper clip merges paper. Designed building of Santa Claus’ logistics center in the city of Oulu is a combination of different functions in a single volume. The building consists of a storage and workshop zone and a zone of a visitors’ center. Visually different functional areas are united by the common roof, supported by treelike steel supports. Multifaceted skylights in the roof remind of the structure of ice crystals. The name and an image of the project are related with shining crystals in winter forest. Free shape of the building allows it to fit harmoniously into the surrounding landscape. Stores are the volumes without windows, lit only overhead light. MAKE DREAMS REALITY The main concept is connecting the regular forms of the working zones with the much smoother forms of the public areas, thus forming two interconnected zones - Work and Leisure. The public building is situated in between the two zones and in front of it there is a reflection pool that goes deep between the stores. In summer people can go for a walk along it and in winter they can ice skate. Green spaces are increased by a huge usable green deck above the four stores where people can go for a walk and enjoy the views from above. You can go up there via a big ramp, which in winter becomes a ski and sleigh piste from where Santa can take off or land.

THE GREEN HILL THE WHITE HILL delivery area truck parking
The concept of OVER THE HILLS came from the idea that a place that works all year long for that one day of people’s happiness shouldn’t be locked away from the public. As an industrial object’s purpose was never closer to the people, it should be celebrated just like a public space, but also a workplace for all it’s employees and a highly representative building.

access: separate heavy transportation from guests and commuters
Legends and fairytales from our childhoods leave us believing that all the magic in this world happens over the hills, over the forests and far away. We grow up accepting that those stories are our only window into the intangible fantasy world. The magic of Christmas is an exception in that matter, since once every year we get the unique oportunity to experience its wonders. That is the time we actually may find ourselves believing that the scary forests are not so dark, the mighty hills might be climbed and we can get a little touch of what is inexistent in our everyday lives.
surrouding? fill with nature! allow people to enjoy it
OVER THE HILLS connects industry to nature, offering the employees both creative, comfortable working spaces and a stretch of greenery that would also give the inhabitants of Oulu the possibility to interact with the place „where the magic happens”. The form clearly marks the location while celebrating the metaphorical fairytale hills and the Finnish landscape - without overpowering it.

THE RESIDENCE OF MR. SANTA CLAUS The main idea of design is the Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circle includes the North Pole and some parts of different countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Greenland, Canada, Alaska, Russia. Their forms on the geographical map were starting point for forms of pavilions of the logistic center. Guests can see only the most interesting, and the technical part is hidden from their eyes under the ground. The central point of the Arctic Circle - the North Pole – belongs to Santa. The glass residence of Mr. Santa is located under the huge Christmas tree in the center of the yard which combines all pavillons.

SKYHALL Main interest was to satisfy both the functional needs of the project while simultaneously creating a cultural community hub that would help develop the area in a genuine way. The building is divided by a central community garden that reflects its surroundings and incorporates its genius loci. By creating a natural break in the building various semi-public areas are created, as well as common spaces for visitors and employees at differing levels. The logistic centre is a new idea hub to promote technological advancement and provoke a reason for tourists and locals to continually return in order to keep up with the new implementations. The project looks into the future of architecture of logistic centres by shifting the workflow towards robotic systems. This will make it possible to optimize the future growth of needed space in an efficient and effective manner.

Light flushes the huge interior space comes and creates different light atmospheres by mirroring in the concave and convex form. The conection to the sky of Finland is also readable in the facades. A lot of small windows are placed like stars and bring additional light into the indoor and create a good atmosphere for the office spaces.

STALLER GLACIER The form of the building refers in its shape and colours to a glacier digging in the ground. A part of the building is hidden below the ground, while the grass climbs gently up the roof. The roofing of the building consists of irregular triangular roof slopes, a part of which are glassed and act as skylights providing additional lighting to shops and to offices located on the first floor.

TRAIL OF SANTA parking car x 205 The logistics center works as a runway for Santa to take off with his sleigh. In the design Christmas is understood as the feast of the sun: the sun has reborn from the dark winter after the longest night of the year. Center is shaped like a curve that has been inspired by the sun track during the winter solstice. In the middle of the building is an artificial lake, which shape is elliptical, and it corresponds to the orbit of summer solstice.

so it should be adaptable to changing conditions and demand. Finland is famous for its nature and forest. Fir-trees inspired the form of the storage blocks. At the same time, that form mekes it possible to fold block one into another when there is less storage space needed. In autumn and spring it can help to save on heating costs. In summer it becomes a venue for music and arts festival, since folded storage block can be easily transformed into stages. Such festival can attract lots of tourists and bring more life to inhabitants of Oulu, many of which are students. The building consists of three main parts: offices, storage spaces and a museum tower. The tower is like a beacon to the region, it is 55 meters high, coated with perforated metal painted in red. It houses Santa Museum, and like a star on christmas tree, it becomes a key element of the buliding, symbolising all the joy and laughter Santa brings to us every year. Office block has a big lobby lit with sunlight from the glass roof, the lobby provides acces to the museum, restaurant, meeting rooms

and offices, including Santa’s office. The architecture of the block is very neutral, it has big windows on the southern side and smaller ones on northern side to utilize the sunlight. Storage blocks have glazing on the northern side, so that the goods are not damaged by direct sunlight. Facades of the storage blocks have cladding made of RUUKKI Liberta Glass panels. Reflective surface of the panels let the building dissolve into the surroundings.

SANTA’S OGISTIC CENTER
TRINEO The design for Santa´s logistics center relies on a round shape throughout the whole project. The shape is interpreted in different structures such as walls, windows and floors. Most of the roofs are green and covered with grass, which filters pollutants and carbon dioxide. The rest of the roofs are white, which works as a reflective surface.

UNWRAPPING ANACHRONY Santa´s logistics center is a transparent building that gives away to activities inside and outside. The surrounding forest creates a mythical land in a relation to rational building. The offices are made from wood inspired by traditional Finnish architecture. The result is reminiscent of a traditional village and Santa´s Village, brought to life in a modern context.

UP UP & AWAY Santa’s logistic centre is built vertically, which allows a for a smaller plan area which therefore preserves the terrain of the existing site. The design does not include storage spaces, instead the product arrives, is wrapped and then sent away for delivery immediately. The core of the building holds a large truck lift that can elevate 8 trucks at a time, rotate them to their allocated delivery spot and then be lowered to drive out through the exit. This eliminates the necessity for turning circles and parking spaces.

this promenade there are several resting platforms that offer views into the logistic centre as well as out to the surrounding areas. This allows the visitors to witness the interior operations without intervening and causing disruption. The large shell-like structure protects this ramp as well as the facade of the logistic centre from the harsh winter climate. The shell is
perforated with small windows along the ramp, allowing visitors to peek out into the open. Unlike most logistic centres, we decided to build vertically rather than horizontally. This preserves the nature of the existing site and allows the building to expand vertically allowing trucks to be elevated by the
