My Master Thesis is linked with an ongoing research project at Chalmers: Climate Smart Apartments. The project aims for guidelines for the design and development of climate-friendly and sustainable homes. One study cared out within the project raised questions about how we achieve social goals of adaptation and accessibility for changing demographic needs over time while the climate impact of re-constructions is reduced. My research process includes also a collaboration with VANDKUNSTEN Architects, Copenhagen under another research project at Chalmers - Nordic Built. The study investigates how and to what degree the inhabitants used the flexible features of their apartments. The purpose of my Master Thesis is to develop design guidelines for more adaptable apartments with less environmental impact, in the nowadays Swedish context. What, from the international context, can work here and what not? Why? What strategies to adjust? How? Our society faces realities and changes never seen before: globalization, environmental crisis, economic instability, increased demography and cultural diversity to name some. In the same time our home-planet is running out of resources. The natural environment wears out at previously unseen rates. Biodiversity and species are wiped out to leave room for civilization. Some societies consume more than one planet in resources while others struggle with water scarcity, war or poverty.

We (clients, architects, developers) are so used to design for the now moment. But the use of an apartment faces, over time, changes in the family members, aging users, increasing cultural diversity, contemporary changes in the family structure or more and more people working from home. How to design future houses when the future embodies uncertainty and society face realities and crisis never seen before? There are different ways to address flexibility in this context: - management level (user's involvement from the design phase, continuing in the construction phase and later while inhabiting, giving the chance for easy alterations according to specific needs) - physical level (the possibility to shrink/extend the apartment layout, movable interior walls, open space design, raw-space apartments, the floor finishings, the access and display of the utilities, to name some) I will investigate how and if it is possible to implement such strategies in the Swedish context. Different actors play different roles here: developers, design and construction teams, clients and industry, body regulations. I want to give an insight of their role in the housing market. Throughout a series of interviews (with HSB, IKEA, Tengbom Architects, prefabricated walls producer) I will explore what do they see as opportunities and challenges of flexible features in the newly built apartments. My aim thus, is to describe the right balance of flexibility and steadiness of different construction components of the housing program that will enhance sustainable practices and the quality of life.

FEED YOUR SENSES A Regenerative Food Hub for The Hungry Senses as part of an international team in the Studio Sustainable Building Competition at Chalmers Architecture run by 3XN/GXN Architecture Office, Copenhagen / autumn 2016
The studio investigated how a symbiosis between urban farming, temporary construction, and regenerative sustainability can create social and economic value in cities. We had to design a regenerative temporary Food Hub that will bring value to the urban place and the local community, using sustainable strategies. The site was located in central Copenhagen, in the harbor, where is the new pedestrian bridge. It laid in the immediate vicinity with the Street Food on Papirøen Island and The Noma restaurant. Our team designed a regenerative urban space that combined sensorial experiences and sustainable strategies in order to make people more aware about food chains, resource shortage, and natural cycles. It is a food hub that reconnects the citizens with soil, water and food. A place that stimulates curiosity and appetite. The main concept was around an urban forest - with similar functions for the city as a natural one: offers shelter, food, water, knowledge, experience, biding inhabitants and passersby. The construction itself is a complex structure designed with the help of the latest technologies Grasshopper definition and robotic techniques. It is supposed to easily be tare down and assemble in other parts of the city, to facilitate sustainable knowledge spread out. The Hub consists of a marine restaurant in the water, a restaurant on the site, a food production area and outdoor areas. All parts are connected under the same canopy of urban trees and engage the users at different urban and sensorial levels.

We had a really good working team with people coming from Sweden, China and Romania. That brought a lot of various knowledge and different perspectives on the discussion and so we came up with a richer project at the end. CONCEPT PHASE: - Being part in all the team discussions, concept development process and manage, as a team, to come up with a final, unitary project. - Research on the local food production, new technologies, sustainable strategies, similar projects. DESIGN PHASE: - I developed diagrams, details, plans. - I design the structure, the graphic and the cover of the project's presentation. - I searched and decided on the right images to show our intentions. - Created and designed diagrams: Functions, Accessibility and Flow of People on the site, Water and Food circularity on the hub, Facade and Roofing Types. - Detailed area of a single unit of the canopy - an Urban Tree with all the materials, functions and dimensions. - Aspects of temporality: modular systems, design for easy assemble/disassemble, reusability of the materials.

MATERIAL AND IMMATERIAL MUSEUM International Seminar and Competition of Museum Design at Villa Adriana / Rome, Italy 2009 Special Mention FIABA (Italian Fund for the Abolition of Architectural Barriers)
The goal of the Seminar was to design ideas for the Material and Immaterial Museum at Villa Adriana at Tivoli, Rome. It consists of the design of a double museum to be sited at Villa Adriana (Material Museum) and at the various sites in Rome related to Hadrian (Immaterial Museum). I was part of a 6 students team from USA and Romania. All the projects were part of a competition. We won the Special Mention FIABA (Italian Fund for the Abolition of Architectural Barriers) for our design of a complet route inside the Villa with different facilities for the persons with disabilities. We based our concept on the idea that everybody has to have access to an enjoyable life in all its aspects, including cultural itineraries. . For the Immaterial Museum we worked with a sensorial approach that was meant to engage the passers-by in an urban sensorial experience. It consists of diffrent art forms in a setting chosen from 4 places in Rome related to Emperor Hadrian. We developed an informational “bubble� in those symbolic setting, using urban scenography - as film projections, specific sounds (like the one made of the horses in gallop thru the stone streets of the ancient Rome) or simply music and virtual narrations. All those experiences driven by sounds and images in the urban space aimed to make an echo of the old heroic eras into the mind of the contemporary tourists. Just in a fraction of a second, they could transcend in other times for a glimpse into what it was one of the oldest civilization in the world.
MY INPUT TO THE PROJECT Special Mention FIABA (Italian Fund for the Abolition of Architectural Barriers)
We designed The Material Museum as a permanent museum entity using sustainable strategies. The concept had to focus on the appropriate relation between the meaningful reality of the archeological site and the modern language of architectural intervention. Therefore we tried to satisfied that requirement and we design an insertion in an existing front, a new exposition area with modern facilities in a contextualist manner, creating new museum routes with a minimum impact on the site. Also we proposed the renovation of different parts of the site and the restauration of the statues. The main material used in this new building are the ancient stone fragments layed near the site, with a very important historical identity. Unfortunaly that ‘mountain of scraps’ is in danger of being destroyed by the lack of the authorities protection, so we took that very important local material and put it in metal frames to preserve it in a meaningful and useful manner. We worked with aspects of temporality such as: modular systems, design for easy assemble/disassemble, reusability of the materials. I have been part of all the discussions and design development. I worked particularly with the plans and sections of the Material Museum and with grounding our concept in sustainable practices.
MORA RESIDENTIAL BUILDING / Doctor Grigore Mora street, Bucharest as lead-architect at ADN Architecture Office / 2012-2013
Award: 2014 Nominated at the National Biennial Architecture, Bucharest. Housing category. The project is located in a historic area of central Bucharest, within a neighborhood reach in architectural values dating back to the beginning of the 20th century and the interwar period. The design project aimed to elegantly integrate in the context and to bring contemporary value on the place. It is an "urban villa" consisting of 5 big apartments. It has a B+GF+4F on a total built area of 2020 sqm. All the living units include generous interior and exterior spaces and are invested with high technology. The whole building is covered in limestone. Special detailing at the corners or the vertical and horizontal edges gives the entire building an airy, light appearance. A lot of attention was paid to details, the quality of the materials and the work itself.

MY INPUT TO THE PROJECT as lead-architect at ADN Architecture Office / 2012-2013
I joined the project for the construction phase as lead architect. I cared all the work needed, being in constant collaboration with architecture team who designed it. I had, after was possible, my desk on the site for a better communication and supervision. CONSTRUCTION PHASE: - I was the mediate between the client, the architects, the construction project management team and all the engineers (structural, HVAC, electrical and plumbing), consultants (facade, sanitary items, shading, windows and doors, etc), specialists, and the construction company. - I had to assure that the requirements from all those parts can be implemented in the project, within budget and schedule time. - I produced all the drawings and architectural specifications adjusted to the others team's requirements. Than, clearly deliver them to the construction team. I stayed on site and I supervised the execution itself. I signaled to the other teams about problems and solutions. - I was responsible for specifying the nature and quality of materials required in collaboration with the client, the others architects and the construction project management team.
SKANSKA OFFICE BUILDING / GOLD LEED Certification 2B+GF+10 -11F, Gara Herastrau street, Bucharest part of a design team at Architect Service / 2011-2012
The project won the competition for Skanska, who entered for the first time on the local market. It's an office building complex class A, GOLD LEED certified, with a GBA of 60,000 square meters to be divided in three phases/buildings of approx 15.000-25.000 sqm, standing on common garage and utility floors. Our design emphasizes cutting-edge strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality. Also, the concept satisfied the client demands in terms of flexibility and adaptability. The buildings can be adapted to a number of different purposes and be converted with ease during their lifetime to satisfy changing market requirements.
MY INPUT TO THE PROJECT part of a design team at Architect Service / 2011-2012
I was involved in two stages of the project: the competition phase and, after our office won, in the concept design phase for client's approval. COMPETITION PHASE: - I read, understood and applied the LEED Certification requirements and propose solutions to adapt to local regulations. - I did facades sun exposure preliminary studies and proposal about where and how to provide shading. - The calculation of the amount of the green spaces needed in the project according to authorities norms. Participation on decision making about where and which types of green areas to use. DESIGN PHASE: - Collaboration with the engineers teams involved in the project to develop the architectural plans. - Working with Gross Floor Area and Net Floor Area to maximize the use of the space. - Working in BIM.
DIONISIE LUPU RESIDENTIAL BUILDING / 3B+SB+GR+8F, Dionisie Lupu street, Bucharest, Romania as lead-architect at Architect Service / 2009-2010
The project was about developing 72 apartments on a site in the city center of Bucharest, in an very valuable architectural area with buildings dating back in 19th century. The site included one such building for which we proposed a renovation and rehabilitation solution to better accommodate it to a contemporary use. We have collaborated with a studio specialized in building renovations. The concept of the new insertion was based on the idea of integration in the specific context using nowadays architectural language and technologies. We tried our best to meet the specific requirements given by the historic value of the site and buildings around, offering to the client, at the same time, the maximum of the place's potential. The new building has 3 basements, one semi-basement, a ground floor and 7 floors above. The design of the apartments had the focus on flexible aspects: there is a core of the building which includes staircase, elevators and horizontal circulation, as well as all the shafts needed for the electric and sanitary systems. All the apartments are organized around this core which is placed in the middle of the building. The kitchens and bathrooms were placed near this core and were the only fixed spaces in the apartment. The rest of the apartment space was optimally design by us, but could have been sold as well as an open space if the future client wanted.
MY INPUT TO THE PROJECT as lead-architect at Architect Service / 2009-2010
I started as an architect in a design team but very soon I was the lead-architect of it. I was part of the project from the first sketches up to the Technical Project Phase that is submitted for the municipality building permit. DESIGN PHASE: - Architectural concept developed inside our design team and in collaboration with engineers and renovation specialists - Developed the project from early sketches to the final drawings (plans, facades, sections) and written documentation along with the colleagues in my team. - Coordinating collaboration and attending meetings between all the specialist teams: engineers (structural, HVAC and electrics, sanitary) the client, the renovation specialists, consultants in underground parking, the project management construction company. - Implementing al the requirements from the client and all the other collaborators in the project. - Preparing documentation for advisory commissions: Environment, Fire Safety, Cultural Heritage and Building Permit. - Presenting the project to the environmental commission to get the building approval.
