This season is full of compelling music – full of expression, innovation and passion. We hope you find something that resonates with you, and discover something new. September proved to be extraordinary. Valentina Peleggi extended her four-year contract as the Symphony’s Music Director. Our season opened with Carmina Burana, Gladys Knight, and the return of the RSL Designer House. In celebration of Concertmaster Daisuke Yamamoto’s 10th anniversary, he presented the world premiere of Andre Portera’s Violin Concerto. Richmond Symphony Chorus takes the stage with the Symphony in November in a monumental work by Roxanna Panufnik that splits the chorus, and the orchestra in two, and requires two conductors! Relive the joy and power of Menuhin Richmond 2021 with Junior 1st Prize winner Keila Wakao joining the Symphony for The Four Seasons at a concert in local neighborhoods in January. Building on our commitment to commissioning, and celebrating Virginia voices – the season features three additional world premieres, including the first commission from Richmond Symphony Composer-in-Residence, Damien Geter; Adolphus Hailstork’s 2nd piano concerto “The Peaceable Kingdom,” and a new work for the Richmond Symphony Chorus and the Symphony by Richmond native Zachary Wadsworth. The talent in our region is amazing, and we are so proud to showcase it every day! The holiday season brings a special visit by Soul Santa from the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, along with performances of carols and classics during Richmond’s favorite holiday music tradition Let It Snow! And don’t miss the second annual Holiday Brass – tacky Christmas sweaters are highly encouraged. Education and community programs are in full swing and continue to be at the heart of the Symphony’s activities. Five Youth Orchestra Program ensembles learn, rehearse and perform throughout the year. The talent of our local young musicians is amazing. The new Youth Community Strings launched in August, providing free violin instruction to 2nd grade students in the Richmond area. 2023-24 brings compelling new music and timeless classics with soloists and visiting artists who embody the essence of the music they perform, along with the talented musicians of the Richmond Symphony who bring the work to life. On behalf of everyone at the Symphony, we invite you to explore the season and allow yourself to experience connection, the complexity and the delight the music has to offer. Thank you for being a powerful part of the experience of a live orchestra! Lacey Huszcza, Executive Director and Valentina Peleggi, Music Director RICHMONDSYMPHONY.COM / 3

Chia-Hsuan Lin

ASSOCIATE CONDUCTOR

Jack and Mary Ann Frable Associate Conductor Chair

Hailed by the Virginia Gazette as “a rock solid” and “animated” conductor, Chia-Hsuan (jahSHWEN) Lin delights audiences throughout the world with her trademark energy and command. Appointed Associate Conductor of the Richmond Symphony in 2016, Lin champions the transformational power of symphonic music through her inspiring concerts for all audiences. This season Lin debuts with St. Louis Symphony, Rochester Symphony (MN), Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra. She also returns to conduct the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Williamsburg Symphony, and Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and covers concerts with the New York Philharmonic. Clarke Bustard wrote of Lin’s Brahms Fourth Symphony, “I’ve never heard a more compelling live performance than this

one.” In another performance, Lin “crafted a Tchaikovsky Fourth that dancers could have danced to,” and “fine details, tone-painting of moody atmospherics, rhythmic fluidity and abundant lyricism came through almost flawlessly.” (Letter V) Other Richmond highlights include Handel’s Messiah, Classics Series, Symphony Pops, family concerts, a side-by-side orchestra of 624 musicians and community members in “Come and Play,” a record crowd exceeding 19,000 for Richmond’s Independence Day Celebration, and a single-day ticket sales record for Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in Concert. The former Assistant Conductor of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Lin punctuated the end of her tenure in 2016 “with the command and energy of a soccer star” before a record FWP subscription crowd. (larryhayes.com) Her interactive programs invoke her love of collaboration with audiences; with singing, body-percussion, bell jingling, and call-andresponse all adding to the joy of experiencing live music together. An active guest conductor, she has directed Minnesota Orchestra, Virginia Symphony, Richmond Ballet, Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra, Academy of Taiwan Strings and Taipei Philharmonic Chorus. As a cover conductor, Lin has worked with the Minnesota Orchestra, National Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, and others, with conductors such as Osmo Vänskä, Jahja Ling, Marin Alsop, Gianandrea Noseda, Stéphane Denève, and many more. In 2019, Lin was praised as a last-minute replacement in Williamsburg’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6. Assuming the podium the day of the concert, the Virginia Gazette reported Lin as “leading them through a thoroughly top-drawer performance” in “an exceptionally absorbing interpretation and rendering.” An advocate for the next generation of diverse musical talent, Lin has collaborated with award-winning artists Paul Huang, Sterling Elliot, Amaryn Olmeda, Kevin Zhu, Inna

Faliks, and Eduardo Rojas. Showcasing new music that often transcends traditional classical boundaries, her list of premieres continues to grow with new works by Texu Kim, Stephen Prutsman, Zachary Wadsworth, PaviElle French, Laura Schwendinger, Steve Heitzeg, and Jennifer Jolley.

delights audiences throughout the world with her trademark energy and command. (Virginia Gazette)

A passionate educator, Lin has worked with university orchestras throughout Virginia, and previously served as Music Director of the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra, University of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Conductor of Opera at the CCM Spoleto Music Festival in Italy. Innovative projects during her tenure as interim Music Director of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra of Cleveland include unique collaborations with Chris Thile and Michael Stanley. Lin began piano lessons in Taiwan at the age of three. She majored in percussion at the National Taiwan Normal University while playing with the Taipei Percussion Group, only to have a life-altering incident when she was struck by a car. After this she pursued conducting with Apo Hsu and Mark Gibson, and received her Doctorate of Orchestral Conducting at Northwestern University in Chicago with Victor Yampolsky. Lin is married to James Ferree, Principal Horn of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. RICHMONDSYMPHONY.COM / 11

Assistant Conductor of the Richmond Symphony, and conductor of the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra, CanadianAmerican conductor Daniel Myssyk (MISSik) was Music Director of the Montrealbased Orchestre de chambre Appassionata from 2000 to 2016. A few years ago, he led his orchestra on its first American tour, which included two concerts in Richmond. The group also toured before enthused audiences in Ontario in January of 2014. In recent years, he has made critically acclaimed appearances with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, and the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, among others. In 2015, Myssyk made his debut in Guanajuato (Mexico) where he has been returning regularly over the past years, and also conducted the Michoacan State Orchestra. In 2019, return engagements have brought him back to Canada to conduct the Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières and the Orchestre de la Francophonie. Myssyk conducts repertoire from the classical, romantic, modern and contemporary periods with great attention to stylistically appropriate detail. He maintains a continuous engagement with opera in a variety of styles ranging from Mozart to Menotti. Sensitive to the music of our time, he has contributed to the creation of many contemporary North American works, including the worldpremiere of Anthony Brandt’s opera, The Birth of Something, with DACAMERA in Houston. Under his leadership, three recent VCU Opera productions of The Gondoliers (2015), The Old Maid and the Thief (2012), and Hansel and Gretel (2011) won top prizes at the National Opera Association competition. Myssyk’s recordings have received widespread critical acclaim. In 2012, he completed the recording of Czech Serenades with works by Suk and Dvořák. The CD was in nomination for best recording of the year at the “ADISQ” awards, Quebec’s equivalent of the GRAMMY® AWARDS and at the Prix Opus from the Conseil québécois de la musique.

Jean-Yves Duperron of the Classical Sentinel wrote: “Conductor Daniel Myssyk and the members of the Appassionata Chamber Orchestra ply their magic in this music, and shape each and every phrase, and infuse each and every note, with care and sincere expression. I’ve rarely heard these two works played with this much conviction.” In 2010, his CD Idyla (on Fidelio label), was nominated for an Opus Prize as best recording of the year. A CD featuring American trumpet player and VCU colleague Rex Richardson playing Dana Wilson’s Concerto for Trumpet and Strings was released on Summit Records, earning rave reviews from the International Trumpet Guild Journal. His most recent CD, on the Atma label, features works by Quebec composer François Dompierre and has earned excellent reviews from Radio-Canada

His involvement with youth reflects a well-honed passion for music education. and Magazine Son et image. Professor Daniel Myssyk has been Virginia Commonwealth University’s Director of Orchestral Activities since 2007. His involvement with youth reflects a well-honed passion for music education. In addition to his work at VCU, he is a regular collaborator with the All-Virginia State Orchestra and the Hampton Roads Chamber Players, among many others. In the early 2000s, Myssyk was a conducting fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and School where he spent two summers under the tutelage of David Zinman. A student of Larry Rachleff, he received his master’s degree in Conducting from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in 2006. RICHMONDSYMPHONY.COM / 13

RICHMOND SYMPHONY CHORUS The Richmond Symphony Chorus is an award-winning ensemble of 150 members from the Richmond region. It performs regularly with the Richmond Symphony, Richmond Ballet, and in stand-alone performances around the community. The chorus members – ages 16 to 85 – are a diverse group of Richmond community members with a shared passion for choral singing. James Erb founded the Richmond Symphony Chorus in 1971 to perform Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis under the baton of renowned conductor Robert Shaw. Erb, a professor at the University of Richmond and a scholar of Renaissance music, led the group for 36 years. Repertoire ranges from classical and opera to pops favorites. Conductor Erin Freeman led the chorus from 2007-2021, including performances in Richmond, Wintergreen, Carnegie Hall, and Paris, France. In 2018, the Chorus was featured in the GRAMMY®-nominated recording of the premier performance of Children of Adam by American composer Mason Bates and Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem. The Chorus is now in its 52nd active season, with performances of Carmina Burana in August at the prestigious Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts and in September in the Carpenter Theatre; the stunning Across the Line of Dreams, a work for split chorus and two conductors by Roxanna Panufnik in November a World Premiere of a new work by Richmond native, Zachary Wadsworth, in February; and the stirring Verdi’s Requiem in June, under the direction of Richmond Symphony Music Director Valentina Peleggi. Performing on six-and-a-half octaves of Malmark English handbells, handchimes and various other instruments, The James River Ringers is Richmond, Virginia’s, premier auditioned community handbell ensemble, dedicated to performing quality handbell music of all genres. In the spring of 2023 they moved to River Road Presbyterian Church as artists-in-residence, where the church provides rehearsal and storage space. The group has been in existence since 1995, when a few members began ringing together during summer break from church choirs. Those “ring-a-holics” formed The James River Ringers, chartered as a not-for-profit organization in 1998. Members have come from all parts of the Richmond metropolitan area, Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville and Harrisonburg. Dottie Tweedie is the founding director, holds the title, Director Emerita, and is back again postpandemic serving as interim director until a new one can be hired. The mission of The James River Ringers is to promote the art of handbell ringing and to present quality handbell music through public concerts, private events, workshops and classes that help to both educate and entertain. The choir provides a training opportunity for individual ringers, as well as organizing and participating in various handbell clinics, festivals and symposia. PROGRAM NOTES

DAMIEN GETER: Sinfonia Americana The Richmond Symphony inaugurated its new model of a long-term composer residency with the tenure of Damien Geter (pronounced JEE-ter), who is now in the middle of the second year of his three-year appointment: it began in 2022 and lasts through the 2024-25 season. Geter’s responsibilities as Composer-in-Residence include curating programs, engaging with local composers, young musicians, and other members of the Richmond community, and mapping out collaborative strategies with other artistic disciplines. His residency moreover encompassed commissions to write new works for the Richmond Symphony. Sinfonia Americana is the first of these and will be followed next year by Loving v. Virginia, an opera co-commissioned by Virginia Opera to mark the company’s 50th anniversary. Currently based in Chicago, Geter has additionally won acclaim as a bassbaritone with a powerful stage presence (Richmond Symphony audiences have heard him as a soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth, for example). His compositions are widely sought after across the spectrum, from soloists and chamber music ensembles to orchestras, opera companies, and choral organizations. The past few seasons alone have seen the premieres of such major choral-orchestral works as An African American Requiem and The Justice Symphony, the multidisciplinary song cycle COTTON, and the oneact opera Holy Ground. Himself a native of Chesterfield, Geter recalls that many of his earliest musical memories “came from sitting in the Richmond Symphony concert hall as a young person.” He describes Sinfonia Americana, his second symphony following The Justice Symphony, as “an expansion on what has been deemed ‘the American Sound.’” As Geter explains, “America is a place that is defined by so many different cultures. I think it’s important, especially in these times, to maybe think differently about what we deem to be the American sound.” This is a topic he has also been exploring in such other works as American Apollo, his opera about the painter John Singer Sargent and his relationship with his young African American model Thomas E. McKeller.

PROGRAM NOTES...continued

The full-length opera is scheduled to be premiered in July by Des Moines Metro Opera. Geter’s sense of mission is grounded in a desire “to create music that furthers the cause for social justice.” Even as a purely instrumental work cast in a single movement, Sinfonia Americana embodies his quest to come to terms with defining what “the American Sound” could mean from his contemporary perspective as a composer. He writes, “The answer, I imagine, lies somewhere in the fact that as I am an American, by default, I have created an American sound—my own—that is influenced by those who came before me who seemed to have success in creating the template for this particular sonic landscape. However, mine grooves a bit, a nod to my Black American culture.” According to Geter, Sinfonia Americana unfolds “in two main parts with a recap.” The melodies he presents in the opening section “are interwoven throughout the piece against differing musical ideas which cause the main tunes to act like a chameleon that is shaped by its surroundings.”

Ferruccio Busoni: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35a This year, the music world commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of Ferruccio Busoni. Born in a suburb of Florence—the native city of Music Director Valentina Peleggi—Busoni considered his Italian heritage a crucial part of his identity, though Berlin became his home for much of his life. He was encouraged at a very early age by his parents, both of whom were serious musicians. His mixed German Italian heritage and quest to synthesize both Northern and Mediterranean strands—the layered complexity of J.S. Bach with an Italianate lyrical grace—brings to mind a character from a narrative by Thomas Mann. Busoni likewise sought to balance his dual identity as a brilliant pianist in a golden age of virtuosos with his ambitions as a composer. His career straddled the tumultuous years of the early 20th century, when the legacy of Romanticism was confronted by the radical transformations of early Modernism and the shock of the First World War.

Already at the age of nine, Busoni’s enormous talent led to enrollment in the Vienna Conservatory, and he won the praise of no less than Johannes Brahms. The Violin Concerto is a product of the early period when Busoni was still discovering his compositional voice and is in the same key of D major as the Brahms and Beethoven Violin Concertos, both important models. Like those composers, Busoni wrote only one concerto for the instrument. His friendship with the Dutch violinist Henri Petri—a student of Joseph Joachim, for whom Brahms wrote his Violin Concerto—inspired Busoni to write the concerto in 1896-97. Busoni would later expand the concerto genre to unprecedented proportions—even introducing a male choir as part of his sonic apparatus—for his visionary Piano Concerto, introduced in 1904. But even though it calls for a fairly large orchestra, the Violin Concerto is of modest dimensions and designed in the conventional three movements (albeit seamlessly connected one to the next). The solo violin begins participating near the very start, already establishing an eloquent virtuosity as central to its identity. Busoni works with a quintessentially Brahmsian process of developing the simplest of musical ideas into larger, organic forms. The Italian side of his creative personality is especially apparent in the ingratiating melody of the middle Andante section, while the impetuous finale seems to enact what the composer characterized as “a sort of Carnival”—a celebration of gravity-defying virtuosity and exuberant spirits.

Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73 Johannes Brahms burst on the scene determined to breathe new life into the symphony—a genre then undergoing an identity crisis—but struggled mightily to wrestle his First Symphony into being. Its success reinforced a newfound confidence in the now-middle-aged composer. In striking contrast to the First, Brahms completed his Second Symphony with astonishing speed: all told, within a period of about five months in 1877. “Why, it is all blue sky, a babbling of streams, sunshine, and cool green shade!” remarked the surgeon Theodore Billroth, a close friend and supporter of Brahms, when he first encountered the Second Symphony’s

PROGRAM NOTES...continued

soundscape. The work has frequently evoked pastoral associations of this sort—a world apart from the tragic solemnity of the First Symphony— which point to the natural beauty of the Austrian lakeside resort where Brahms composed the Second. Valentina Peleggi considers the Second “the most Apollonian” of Brahms’s four symphonies: a masterpiece that reframes the Romantic impulse with a kind of classical balance. But another Brahmsian thumbprint in this music is a subtle undercurrent of sadness or elegiac loss that serves as a counterpart to its overall brightness. Brahms himself hinted at this paradoxical aspect when he teased that the published version should be “printed with a black border,” like a funeral announcement. In terms of Brahms’s musical craft, the Second Symphony is moreover a model study of his genius for developing glorious musical structures organically from the most economical musical “seeds.” The first and most primary of these is heard in the opening seconds deep in the strings: a three-note motif that pivots around the home pitch of D (D—C-sharp—D). The first minute or so already contains the movement’s main thematic ideas—along with its core emotional contrast between the “pastoral” (woodwinds and horns) and the “melancholic” (disturbing rumblings in the timpani, along with interruptions by tuba and trombones). This emotional polarity drives the movement. The work’s elegiac aspect is most explicitly foregrounded in the transportive Adagio, which features an exquisite treatment of the woodwinds. Brahms heightens internal contrasts by shifting the meter and incorporating sudden eruptions of denser textures. A more playful version of the pastoral side of the Second emerges in the third movement, a leisurely Allegretto featuring prominent oboe solos, which is twice interrupted by fast-paced interludes. The first three movements all end quietly, setting the stage for the giddy high spirits of the finale. The three-note motif from the beginning reappears but is now transformed to become part of the animated main theme. In the thrillingly extended final section, the brass section heralds a deliriously joyful final rush that chases away all hints of melancholy as Brahms seems to cast off any vestiges of doubt: about the genre, about his place in history, about the power of music itself. A multi-hyphenate music powerhouse and creative visionary, Steve Hackman is a daring voice intent on redefining art music in the 21st century. Trained at the elite level classically but equally adept in popular styles, his breadth of musical fluency and technique is uncanny—he is at once a composer, conductor, producer, DJ, arranger, songwriter, singer, and pianist. He uses these polymathic abilities to create original music of incisive modernism yet rooted in elevated classicism. His groundbreaking orchestral fusions, such as Brahms X Radiohead and The Resurrection Mixtape (Mahler X Notorious B.I.G. X Tupac Shakur), are introducing the symphony orchestra to its future audience; he has conducted these pieces to sellout houses across the country with the orchestras of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas, Seattle, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Colorado, Phoenix,

Nashville, Oregon, Indianapolis, Grand Rapids, Columbus, Charlotte, Southwest Florida, Alabama, Colorado Music Festival, and the Boston Pops. In 2023 Hackman launched his original music project, THE BRINK, a four-part, 300-minute work incorporating elements as wide-ranging as lyric opera and art-song cycles to conceptual hip-hop and experimental electronica. The work is immersive and experiential in nature, with additional creative direction by Jacob Jonas, wardrobe by Greg Lauren, and visuals by Michael N. Meyer. In the Summer of 2022, in a span of three weeks, Hackman created And I Love Her, the music of the Beatles reimagined. It depicts the music of the Beatles through the lens of the women that inspired them and the female characters they invented through their music and lyrics. Hackman serves as the conductor and curator of the BSO Fusion with the Baltimore Symphony, presenting multiple concerts per year of his fusion productions. He is Creative Director and Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony’s Uncharted Series, one of the most successful millennial-focused concert experiences in the country. Hackman has been instrumental in the development of this concert series since 2010. Hackman has teamed up with some of the biggest pop superstars of today to add a signature virtuosic and classical dimension to their work, including Steve Lacy, Doja Cat and Andrew Bird. He was trained at the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and holds degrees in Orchestral Conducting and Piano Performance. He recently taught his first course at the Juilliard School entitled “Fusion, Re-imagination and Revelation.” He is active on Instagram under @stevehackmanmusic.
