Dear Friends,
One year on and the war in Ukraine shows no signs of abating A conflict President Putin thought could be won in a few days continues to inflict unimaginable, pain, suffering, hardship, destruction and death on the lives of those who wage war on each other, and on the lives of millions of innocent people The cost of the war is huge and cannot be purely measured in financial terms; 18 million refugees, the majority of whom are in need of humanitarian aid, over 8000 civilians killed (but could be as high as 100,000) and 300,000 military personnel across both sides dead The effects of war are felt around the world and no one is immune from its impact
Once again aggression and war demonstrate what can happen when the lust for power, and self-advancement becomes the driving force of those in positions of power and authority. Their vision for good is replaced with illusions of self-fulfilment, self-power, and self-advancement and a total disregard for those who stand in their way War is surely a result not only of the evil that exists in our world, but also, albeit extreme, of what can happen when the human heart gives in to the temptation to prefer only self and the rejection of others and God
The holy season of Lent mirrors the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert during which he was tempted by the devil to pursue his own self advancement and through political power, world domination, rather than obey the will of His Father in heaven But by refusing to give into temptation and not reject God, Jesus shows us the reason he endured and resisted temptation and why he offered himself up to death on the cross; to destroy evil for our sake
At the centre of our Christian faith stands the cross, a symbol of suffering yet also one of victory. The cross of Christ bears witness to the triumph of love over hatred, light over darkness and life over death At the end of our journey through Lent and Holy Week comes resurrection and victory over evil! It is what we celebrate and proclaim. Evil can never win because love has triumphed
For many people, especially those feeling the effects of war, their experience of life will be more like Good Friday than Easter Day. But as we continue to extend a helping hand of aid and stand alongside them, we also continue to pray for them May the people of Ukraine and all who suffer in our world today, come to know, in our Lord’s death and resurrection, the victory over evil and experience both the peace and joy of Easter. Every blessing, Fr Howard
