Mitsubishi’s TMR Triton… a Tough and Sporty Concept Mitsubishi’s Triton utility has an enviable reputation for combining durability, sporty styling and rugged power, and now the company takes the vehicle one step further with its latest design concept – the Team Mitsubishi Ralliart (TMR) Triton – at this year’s Australian International Motor Show, Sydney. The TMR Triton is a concept vehicle which closely represents a production reality. Prepared by Alan Heaphy’s TMR engineering centre at Dandenong, Victoria, the TMR Triton delivers increased power and enhanced performance and handling, whilst preserving the tough, dependable spirit for which Triton is known. With a 3.2L common rail turbo diesel engine generating a 12 percent increase in power to an impressive 132kW @ 3,800rpm and a 31 percent increase in torque to a phenomenal 450Nm @ 2,000rpm above the base model Triton, the TMR Triton has plenty of extra grunt. In terms of handling capabilities, the TMR Triton is unparalleled. Improved suspension is achieved through the addition of Koni 8240 series shock absorbers fitted to the front and rear. A front brake package consisting of large 4 piston callipers with 343mm x 29mm ventilated and slotted two piece discs with high performance Ferodo DS25HP brake pads provides increased braking power, and an ABS system with EBD is standard.
With stylish 18 inch by 8 inch Dakar alloy wheels, Pirelli Scorpion ATR 255/55R18 tyres with a symmetrical tread design delivering the all-terrain versatility required, the TMR Triton has excellent traction on every surface, reduced aquaplaning, top braking efficiency, the highest resistance to damage, and comfortable driving on sealed roads. Featuring Triton’s Super Select four-wheel drive system which allows driver change from twowheel drive to four-wheel drive on the fly, the TMR Triton is a truly versatile and functional vehicle. Exterior upgrades to the TMR Triton include the addition of a sports headlamp kit and chrome upper and lower sports grille. Unique TMR Triton badging gives the TMR Triton a distinctive sense of style. Inside, the TMR Triton receives quality stitched TMR logos to the

front and rear leather seats. Stainless steel scuff plates and a full carpet mat set give this Triton variant its own personal style. And the Triton TMR takes good care of technical and audio buffs, too. The vehicle’s audio system has been improved with the addition of a highly functional Eclipse CD3200 Multi Source Sound System which has a powerful 50W x 4 internal amplifiers along with USB input, integrated Bluetooth hands-free and full iPod control. LUXURY HAS A NEW NAME … Introducing the Swagman RV2801
S
wagman Motorhomes have always been synonymous with style, class and the very best the RV lifestyle has to offer.
After our recent visit to Swagman Motorhomes at Labrador on Queensland’s beautiful Gold Coast, I can assure you the latest addition to the successful Next Generation range from Swagman Motorhomes the RV2801 is no exception. STYLE AND INNOVATION The totally new, totally modern patent pending design cannot help but be admired. Using world-first technologies Swagman has completely modernised their prestigious image. Featuring a one piece carbon fibre/ kevlar body the RV2801 is doing away with everything we thought we knew about motor homes and leading the RV industry forward into the future. The RV2801 is 28 foot in length, offering style and innovation in a comfortable size and like all the models in the Next Generation range the styling and interior of the RV2801 sets a new standard for luxury motorhomes. “The whole focus of the development of the latest model from Swagman, was to produce a more fuel-efficient and environmentallyfriendly motorhome”. Said Neil Ingram, Managing Director. ELEGANCE ONBOARD From the moment you climb aboard the RV2801 you can’t help but be enchanted by her inner beauty, so much so that we all felt the need to remove our shoes. The stylish modern interior is a breath of fresh air with its clean lines, European Halogen lighting and a more natural colour scheme.
I THE ENFORCER TAKES US FOR A SPIN
12
Upfront, nothing has been overlooked in the cockpit. With features such as a ergonomically designed European style wood grain dash, electric operated side windows, leather steering wheel, colour night vision reversing camera and driver and passenger electric six way function ultra leather swivel adjustment seats with integrated seat belts, all as standards. The sleek modern design and panoramic windscreen allows for virtually uninterrupted visibility while the 5 speed Automatic transmission with touchpad control, hydraulic power assisted steering, six air bag suspension and ABS combine all add up to one smooth ride. The gutsy rear mounted Maxxforce5 V6 Diesel engine has more than enough power to push you along; this baby has no problem coasting down the highway. THE ENFORCER TAKES US FOR A SPIN V8 Supercar legend Russell Ingall looked quite comfortable behind the wheel of Swagman’s new baby as he took us on a scenic drive around the northern Gold Coast to show off the RV2801 in action. After some quick witted banter involving the new Swagman and drag racing, Russel commented how impressed he was with the new motorhome, “You can’t even tell how windy it is outside, and there is virtually no roll around the corners at all”. Russell is no stranger to Motorhomes, “I had the pleasure of touring in a Swagman in 2007 and apart from being a safe and smooth drive – I call it the Bentley of motorhomes – it is just luxury on wheels,” he said.
TECHNOLOGY & KNOW-HOW Swagman’s focus over the twelve months they spent developing the new 28 footer has been to manufacture a technologically advanced motorhome that was both fuel efficient and environmentally friendly. “With Swagman Motorhomes the combined features and technology of the body and chassis, provide the vehicle with an unbelievable fuel economy of around 14-16 litres per 100 kms” said Managing Director, Neil Ingram. “The patented ARMOUR-SHELL™ body is lighter and eight times stronger than traditional materials used in the industry. By developing the innovative composite body, a lot of weight has been taken out of the vehicle”.Neil added. LIFE ON BOARD Making our way through the RV2801; the lounge / kitchen area are fully equipped for all your home away from home needs. Such as a LPG Gas 2 burner, microwave, stainless steel convection oven, slimline deluxe rangehood, 2 door 240lt 12 volt refrigerator with separate freezer, stainless steel sink complete with drainage rack and wooden cutting board; LCD flat screen TV and a full sized pantry (yes ladies, a full sized pantry!). The bathroom is also actually deserving of the word “room”, featuring fully moulded solid timer doors, full size shower, vitreous China toilet, mirror, moulded vanity and ample storage space for all those bathroom necessities like hairspray, make-up, moisturiser…
with its luxury queen sized island bed that easily lifts up providing plenty of under bed storage and the oversized rear wardrobe is a godsend for those self confessed shop-oholics like myself. TECHNICAL SPECS ADR Seating Capacity of 2, full air brakes with ABS, 178 litre fresh water, auxiliary driving lights, 3 x 120 Ah 12v Deep Cycle batteries from AGM, 240V external power points, dual town power connection and adequate internal power points along with the 3.5 kW Generator conveniently located on an unobtrusive slideout at the front of vehicle. Like all Swagman Motorhomes the RV2801 comes with a five year structural warranty, a three year bumper to bumper warranty and 24/7 roadside assistance throughout Australia and a host of standard features to ensure years of luxury, trouble free travel. IN CONCLUSION The new RV2801 is a modern grand tourer, the ultimate in luxury travel for the discerning buyer. Mr Ingram explained that with a starting price of $395,000 including gst “pre orders have been strong as the 28 ft series is one of our most popular models. Want to learn more about the RV2801? MY RV – Regal Pathfinder Graham and Chris Power Graham and Chris Power, formerly of the Brisbane bayside suburb of Wynnum, are among a growing band of Australians who’ve sold up their home and taken to the road full time. Their Regal Pathfinder is the third of their RVs and they’ve had it now for five months.
MY RV 3

Prior to the Regal, they tried a motorhome, professionally built on an Isuzu chassis. “The caravan has much more room,” says Chris as she reflects on her time in the motorhome. They’d only made one trip in that before they started towing a car along behind, but even with this they remembered their times in their previous Evernew caravan with fondness. The decision having been made to go back to a caravan, they actually bought the Regal from stock that was earmarked for the Brisbane show this year, taking it exactly as it had been built. Even so, they’ve made no serious changes to it. Built to live in! Tinny and an outboard strapped onto their Landcruiser
Graham showed us the external barbecue too
The Pathfinder is a 23’ off-road unit with all the comforts of home. “The front loading washing machine is what I like,” says Chris, “but I think for Graham it’s the 220 litre 2-door fridge he can keep plenty of XXXX Gold in!” Graham, of course, confirmed this. But there is so much more they enjoy. They travel with a tinny and an outboard strapped onto their Landcruiser, with a fold-up boat trailer attached to the rear bumper of the caravan. “We’ve taken it to the Northern Territory twice now,” Graham told us, “and we’ve been to Gladstone since then.” Clearly, the Pathfinder does a great job on whatever roads it’s asked to traverse. The Simplicity suspension undoubtedly has its part in that. “We will be getting a couple more solar panels, though,” Graham said, “in fact, we just went to order them today.” Serious living off the beaten track obviously calls for the twin batteries to be kept topped up. Outside living too Despite the size of the caravan inside, Graham and Chris make good use of its outside living ‘quarters’. Under the roll-out awning they keep a freezer for Graham’s better moments with the fishing rod, while thru-lockers are there for the stowing of many items. Graham showed us the external barbecue too, and they make full use of the fold-down picnic table. The twin gas bottles that supply this and the internal stove are large enough for long stays away from town. “We really do like the way the Regal is finished,” we were told. The queen-size bed is another of Chris’ likes and the way the cupboards in the rear kitchen give her room for keeping things. With seating available right around the table just inside the front door, guests can come into the van without giving a feeling of crowding.
The Powers pride & Joy
There’s also a satellite dish so they can keep up to date with their favourite TV shows and the latest news bulletins. Graham and Chris have never bothered with computers, so there’s no provision for internet at this stage.
After eight years on the road, after all, they would have to be considered somewhat expert in knowing what’s needed and what’s not.

Experienced travellers Looking around the Pathfinder it was clear that this pair of city folk have adapted well to both country living and living on the road. Little is left to chance, they’ve thought of the lot. Two spare wheels join the boat trailer on that rear bumper, the outboard motor swings out from the rear door area of the Landcruiser and the tinny rolls down easily to be put on the trailer or straight into the water. Roof-mounted air conditioning takes care of temperature extremes, but much of the couple’s time is spent out of doors anyway. It’s certainly a credit to Regal that they had put together a unit that so closely matched the needs of this buyer. After eight years on the road, after all, they would have to be considered somewhat expert in knowing what’s needed and what’s not. More and longer trips are obviously planned, but stopping off with a daughter in the Gladstone area was their projected destination when we caught up with them late in October. If you see them trekking in some remote part of the great centre, or the north west, or catch up with them at your favourite fishing hole, they will no doubt enjoy a friendly chat with you and pass on some of their experiences. That’s how it is, after all, when you live on the road.
Chris was kind enough to make us a cuppa

New & Exciting Range Release Australia’s leading fifth wheel manufacturer has just released an exciting new model of it’s Travelhome. The popular Macquarie 25 footer now has a big brother in the new larger Macquarie 29. Incorporating all the features that have made the Macquarie 25 an Australian favourite but with even more standard features and options, the Macquarie 29 is just what you would expect from such a well respected RV manufacturer. You only have to look at a Travelhome to know that it is in a class all of its own. From its streamlined shape and aerodynamic nose through to its bright and open interior, you can tell that every detail has been carefully thought out, and the original style and comfort has been further refined over the years to complete this unique fifth wheeler. But as they say, beauty is only skin deep, and it is Travelhome’s advanced design technology and superior craftsmanship that has allowed them to produce this larger 29 foot unit which, quite amazingly, can be towed by smaller Australian utes such as the Nissan Navara, Holden Colorado, Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50 as well as the normal tray top vehicles such as Land Cruiser, Patrol and F250 . This may all sound too good to be true, but in addition you can still carry up to 800 kg in storage and not exceed it’s 3490 kg GTM. This new Travelhome retains all of the tried and proven state of the art light weight powder coated aluminium interior cupboards/ wardrobes/overheads and it’s strong but smooth composite fibreglass shell which dramatically reduces weight when compared to other fifth wheelers. In addition to this the new 29 footer still retains the premium quality and modern interior finish and the lightweight hi-tensile galvanised box section chassis and it’s independent trailing arm suspension. Travelhomes have always been one of the best looking of all fifth wheelers, but really it’s only when you step inside that you experience the difference between the 25' and larger 29' model, they have gone even further on the Macquarie 29 to make it even more special. Speaking with Jason Dutch from the factory at Travelhome as he shows me through, he talks about the new Macquarie 29 range with pride, and that pride really shows in the workmanship and
level of detail. The extra space created is not wasted either, where the Macquarie 25 had most things you require for travelling on the road, the Macquarie 29 can offer everything you require for full time living, like extra room for all those options like a washing machine, more storage or clothes hanging space to make life on the road just that little bit more like home. Jason tells me that they have listened to what their customers wanted when designing the new Macquarie 29 and have come up with a range of floorplans including a “north-south” walk-around bed, a bunk bed floorplan for families sleeping up to six, an office layout for those people who want to work whilst on the road, a recliner chair floorplan and they even have a toy hauler floorplan in the development stages for those people who like to take their motorbikes or bicycles or other toys with them on holidays. What’s even better is that the most popular options from the smaller Macquarie 25 have been made standard inclusions in the larger Macquarie 29, including an internal/external entertainment system, a large two door fridge freezer and the premium quality fabric upgrade. But apart from the wide selection of new floorplans one of the obvious benefits of the new Macquarie 29 is the generous amount of extra internal and external storage space it offers. Just to remind you, Travelhome relies on almost 40 years experience in the vehicle building industry and they design and build all of their fifth wheelers in Australia to suit Australian road conditions and offer a national sales and service network. They also stand behind their product with a 5 year construction warranty for all original owners, which probably explains why many existing 25ft Travelhome owners have already placed orders for the new 29 footer. Another strong incentive to join the long list of Travelhome owners is the low running costs compared with other types of fifth wheelers. Owners of Nissan Navaras towing Travelhome 25 footers report fuel consumption figures as low as 14 litres per 100kms on long trips of up to 22,000 kms. Recent tests over shorter runs indicate that the extra weight of the 29 footer results in only marginally higher running costs, which is a direct result of Travelhome’s smooth aerodynamic shape and it’s light weight. We think it’s great to see an Australian company designing and building a range of products and setting such a high standard of quality for all the imported fifth wheel competition to try and meet. Jason is also offering 29ft customers the opportunity to have some input into the details of some of it’s new floorplans. After looking over this exciting new range it is hard to imagine what more an RV buyer could want but Jason assures me that some customers “like the personal input, so subject to it being viable, we will do it”, says Jason. So, if you are interested in finding the location of your nearest Travelhome Dealer or knowing more about any Travelhome product or would like more information on suitable tow vehicles, I would definitely give Jason Dutch at Travelhome a call, you will not find more honest, experienced and professional help when it comes to fifth wheelers in Australia. Luxury RV Travel beats fuel prices Long stretches of open highways leading to Outback towns and home to many iconic natural wonders, like Kakadu National Park and Uluru/Ayers Rock.
Winding seaside roads capturing the essence of the ocean with the sweet smell of salt air wafting through the open window and quaint little country towns with the scent of the fresh morning dew – beautiful. No wonder so many Australians choose the RV lifestyle as the preferred means of travel. Rising fuel costs, the crash of the almighty dollar and the sensationalism of the media can all be a bit daunting. Don’t let media hype keep you indoors. Recent surveys by leading Australian Industry specialists have revealed what the RV industry has known for years - that there is simply no cheaper way to holiday than in a motorhome. The NRMA conducted a trial to ascertain the true cost of a holiday with motorhomes, caravans and mid-sized cars contending to be awarded ‘cheapest form of holidaying’. The results were based on a holiday for two for one week. Many people may be surprised to learn that fuel is still only the fourth largest expense associated with an RV’ing holiday with the bulk of the budget going towards visiting tourist attractions and the day to day cost of living. Even with rising fuel costs, RV’ing is still one of the most affordable ways to holiday.

Cut down the centre from the tail to the top. Gently split shell open to flatten bug. Remove intestinal tract (devein). The bug meat can then be easily removed. Retain shell. Roughly chop flesh. Heat olive oil and butter in a heavy based frypan, sautee bug meat and crushed garlic, add lemon juice turning constantly. Remove from heat and add to mornay sauce. Lay shells on flat baking tray and spoon mornay mixture into shells. Cover with bread crumbs and grated cheese and grill until golden brown. Drizzle with olive oil, garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately on a bed of rice with fresh garden salad

Winnebago Birdsville Motorhome review
We felt that it was only fitting to present our new look magazine with a Winnebago on the front cover. Winnebago – the company, whose name has become synonymous with Motorhomes and the RV lifestyle for over 40 years is a true landmark of innovation in the RV industry. The roots of Winnebago Industries go back to 1965, with the formation of Freeway. Bruce Binns, with the assistance of his wife Ruth, introduced the first Freeway slide on camper to Australia. They progressed with the Freeway name producing motorhomes, caravans and tent trailers. In 1977 the name was changed and Winnebago Industries was born.
W
e visited Winnebago Industries, in Emu Plains , NSW, to take a spin in the brand-new Winnebago Birsdville C2394, a very popular model in the Winnebago range. Slip into the drivers seat of this C Class Motorhome, and two things immediately come to mind, first this is a Motorhome that incorporates the very latest in design and safety technology and second she’s fun to drive…you just want to hit the open road and GO! The Fiat Ducato X251 chassis handles well, responds nicely to the road, and offers excellent driver and passenger comfort. The 4 cylinder Turbo Diesel engine offers excellent fuel economy with 157hp providing ample gusto for the mountain ranges we encountered between Batemans Bay and Braidwood, we certainly weren’t the ones holding up the traffic as we easily cruised alongside this beautiful National Park. Everything you need is at your fingertips, climate control air conditioning, power windows, radio, CD player and all the usual console gadgets. A reversing camera could be a benefit but is not included in the standard features of this motorhome.
34
ON THE OUTSIDE Pleasant on the eyes with its aerodynamic design and tasteful decal, this seven-metre Motorhome certainly caught the attention of fellow travellers, even as we parked on the Kiama peninsular to snap the front cover shot we found many admirers and curious onlookers. For the technical side of things the Birdsville comes with wind out awning, TV antenna, double insulated dual pane hopper windows with shade & flyscreen, towbar, under storage compartment, entry grab handle and exterior light. Entering the Motorhome door fitted with dead bolt and fly screen is by way of the pull down Omni step. This 6 speed manual motorhome is also available on the Ford Transit chassis both offering walk through cab design with the body built on a rigid floor that is mounted to the vehicle chassis with seamless vinyl-clad, insulated exterior walls. ON THE INSIDE In a very competitive marketplace, Winnebago has clearly put a great deal of thought into the interior floor plan and appointments on the Birdsville. The interior is bright, modern and offers up-to-date
www.rvsdownunder.com.au
furnishings with the quality vinyl flooring enhancing the feeling of space. The galley is on the passenger side of the vehicle, and café style dinette on the right. The cab over is accessed via a light weight ladder that can be easily stowed when travelling. At the rear of the Motorhome you find the good sized double bed and separate bathroom. The galley is well appointed and comprises of a Dometic 3 burner gas stove with drop down glass lid, Jensen rangehood with fan & light, 120 litre Dometic fridge/freezer, pull out pantry and single sink with hot & cold water. There is a handy mini grill and Carousel microwave to cater for the cook in the family and enough bench space to easily prepare the meals desired. Little things like the tea towel rack and bench extension were well appreciated. With the driver and passenger swivel chairs in action the living area quickly opens up to a visitor friendly living space, four people could easily enjoy a game of cards or a few wines together without feeling claustrophobic and the well positioned LCD TV is easily viewed throughout the entire Motorhome.
Nov/Dec 2008
The master bedroom in the Birsdville features a good amount of storage space with overhead cupboards, side pockets, under bed storage and additional closet opposite. Lighting is neat and functional, and the sleeping area is bright and spacious for a vehicle of this type. Although the bed over cab may not be as roomy as the one down the back a good night is still ensured and this area is light, bright and airy with reading lights and two windows for great flow through ventilation. The bathroom offers all the usual features one would expect like a toilet, shower, sink, cabinet, towel rail, toothbrush holder and handy mirror with the skylight bringing in loads of natural light.
IN CONCLUSION Plenty of windows equate to a very pleasant outlook from within the Motorhome, with its navy tones and Beechwood finish the Winnebago Birdsville is an affordable motorhome with features that will make your journey not only thoroughly enjoyable but totally memorable. You can choose from the four models available in the Birdsville range, the style that suits you, knowing that all Birdsville motorhomes are aerodynamically styled for economical operation and only a standard car licence is required. Why not test drive one today!

NEW 27’ LONGREACH READY TO ROLL
T
he first of the eagerly awaited Winnebago Longreach C2735SL motorhomes has just rolled off the production line and soon, stock will be rolling out to Winnebago Dealerships right around the country. The new C2735SL Longreach is a 8.2 metre luxury motorhome built on the rugged Isuzu NQR450 AMT chassis, a total package providing more than the most hardened motorhomer would rightfully expect. From the outside, one of the first things that catch your eye apart from the overall size of the motorhome, is the huge storage “boot” at the rear, a large area entirely the full width of the Motorhome. There are the twin 80 watt solar panels conveniently located on the roof of the motorhome, constantly trickling additional charge to the batteries. For those heavy power consumption items such as the ducted air-conditioning or the carousel
microwave, a renowned Onan 3.6Kva generator with automatic start from the flick of a switch inside the motorhome, is built in as standard. Another power feature is the 2000 watt inverter system which conveniently converts 12volt battery power to standard 240volt output so ordinary appliances and power equipment can be easily used. The large domestic size shower is separate from the toilet and vanity and uses hot water, heated by gas or 240 volt power for a strong and reliable hot water supply. The kitchen is large and well designed and equipped for gourmet cooking. Watch the large LCD television screen with built in DVD player, enjoying the chilled air of the ducted air conditioning unit or the smooth heat generated by the air conditioner or the ducted diesel furnace heater. Complimenting a superbly equipped
Motorhome, Winnebago have perfectly matched the all new Isuzu NQR450 chassis. The NQR 450 chassis is driven by a powerful Sitec Series II 5.2lt diesel engine meaning more torque and less fuel consumption. The NQR450 is one of the safest trucks around with side impact beams in each cabin door and driver and passenger airbags all protecting the occupants. In the cab, all the comforts of a luxury car are apparent including comfortable colour matched bucket seating, power windows, power assisted steering, central locking, cruise control, driver and passenger airbags and the infotainment system, a large screen display including a GPS navigation system, a colour reversing camera, a CD/ FM/AM stereo system, ipod and Bluetooth connectability. Keep reading RVs Downunder for an upcoming test drive review on this new Motorhome.
UNDER THE MICROSCOPE A Closer look at Sydney RV Centre
W
ho would have thought that we’d see a flourishing RV dealership on Sydney’s northern peninsular? For many years, this area has been recognised as one of Sydney’s most spectacular holiday destinations, and this is just what attracted the proprietors of Sydney RV Centre, Jeremy and Cathy Pearce, to the area. As Sydney agents for Winnebago Motorhomes located at 1404 Pittwater Road, Narrabeen; Sydney RV Centre is right in the middle of picturesque national parks, golden sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, ideal for surfers and swimmers of all ages. So, what’s the Jeremy Pearce – Sydney RV Centre story? Well, far from being new to the RV industry, Jeremy and his family, originally hailing from the United Kingdom, have been involved with motorhomes and campervans
for over thirty years. Jeremy’s father Roger, along with Jeremy, who holds a degree in manufacturing engineering, and his brother Nick, are responsible for developing the UK’s largest RV ‘super site’ at Newick, where they held 17 different RV franchises and delivered between 40 – 50 motorhomes or campers per week. Now that’s experience, and it also taught Jeremy the importance of quality customer service. The family sold the business in the late 1990’s and it continues to prosper as the UK’s largest RV ‘super site’. Why not check it out on www.brownhills.co.uk Jeremy, Cathy and son Jack (now 7 years old) immigrated to Australia in 2003 and settled on Sydney’s northern beaches, where their lovely daughter Anna was born in 2004. Upon settling in the Pittwater/Mona Vale area, Jeremy joined Trakka Pty Ltd in their retail sales department. After 18 months, Jeremy and Cathy opened their own retail outlet selling pre-owned RV’s including Trakka Campervans, Winnebago Motorhomes, and more. Then in 2006, they reached agreement with Winnebago Industries to establish a Sydney franchise dealership, and relocated to their current site at Narrabeen to open Sydney RV Centre. Their original site at Mona Vale has now been developed as the Sydney RV Service Centre, and under the guidance of Service Manager Michael Major, it provides quality service and

warranty care, by factory trained professionals, for customers from all around Australia. What makes Sydney RV Centre different? As Jeremy stated, “We are the young team - the next generation, with a focus on quality products and first class customer care”. To achieve these goals, Jeremy and Cathy have surrounded themselves with a great team of employees that share their dreams. The cheerful voice on the end of the phone, and the big smile at the reception desk is Carolyn Foung. The experienced professional sales team of Greg Stewart, David Paice and Phil Rorke is led by General Manager Brendan Samuels, who had been with Trakka Pty Ltd for 5 years prior to joining Sydney RV Centre. If you’re thinking about investing in a new motorhome or campervan, be sure to give Sydney RV Centre a call on (02) 9979 4449, and take advantage of their special “Free 2 day holiday package” at the Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park, for their valued customers.

WINGHAM and the haunts of Jimmy GOVERNOR It was not a pleasant place to be incarcerated in – even if your name was Jimmy Governor and you had created mayhem from Dunedoo to Gulgong and north to the Barrington Tops, Port Macquarie, Nundle and the Moonee Range.
Wingham, 313km northeast of Sydney and 13km west of Taree, is a picturesque town laid out around a traditional English village green, Central Park, within whose boundaries sit two highly contrasting items of memorabilia - a 31-tonne, 400-year-old brush box log and a RAAF Vampire Jet on a floodlit plinth. The former is a fitting reminder of the timber industry from which the town prospered. The log, called “The Log” by the locals, has a girth of 4.7m and contains 7,759 super feet of timber - enough to build a medium-sized cottage. The jet, installed in 1971, commemorates the fiftieth birthday of the RAAF. Wingham is the oldest town in the Manning Valley, named after a village in Kent, England and dates from 1854. Timber getting, the mainstay of the local economy in the early days, has given way to dairy and beef cattle. The town itself is a typical old-world charmer that has largely remained unchanged by the tourism that has affected the townships on the coast. Straddling the Manning River, it is a popular venue for boating, canoeing, swimming, fishing and water-skiing. The Kattang Aborigines inhabited the area until the cedar-getters moved into the valley in the late 1820s. The story of the Governor Brothers, Joe and Jimmy, and their mate Jacky Underwood, was brought to life in Thomas Keneally’s book Chant Of Jimmy Blacksmith and the film version that followed. Jimmy, a half-caste Aborigine, who became a horse breaker by trade, was born in Talbragar, New South Wales in 1867. He received some education and, unlike many of the white youths of that time, could also read and write. He learned several different rural trades and at one time served with the New South Wales Police as a Blacktracker. After marrying a white girl, 16 year-old Ethel Mary Jane Page at Gulgong in 1900, he found employment for both of them on the property of John Mawbey at Breelong, a small town near Gilgandra. Jimmy’s marrying a white girl had broken a strict unwritten rule about mixed marriages and the couple suffered abuse and taunts from the white
people in the area, particularly the women. One thing led to another and eventually to an altercation with Mrs. Mawbey and a woman named Helen Kerz. The result was a massacre at the Mawbey homestead where Jimmy and his mate Jacky Underwood went armed with a Winchester rifle and two axes. They forced their way in, clubbed the two women to death with their axes, and then murdered two young Mawbey children and their visiting friend, young Elsie Clarke. A massive manhunt followed for Jimmy, his brother Joe who fled with him, and Jacky but the murders continued: at Ulan a 73 yearold man; at Poggy Station, near Merriwa, two women and a 15 month-old baby; at Wollar another old man. 200 police and 2000 civilians joined the hunt for them and Jacky Underwood was caught first and hanged at Dubbo. After a violent shoot out, Joe escaped only to be caught at the Aboriginal settlement at St Clair, just north of Singleton. Jimmy, shot in the mouth and unable to eat, was caught and taken to Darlinghurst Gaol where he was hanged on 18 January 1901. The most interesting building for us is the Manning Valley Historical Society Museum (1833), located alongside the town square at 12 Farquhar Street, which started its days as a general store. Take a real step back in time and see its mass of fascinating material in a display of all things old with treasures around every corner each one lovingly cared for by volunteer staff. It is well worth putting aside a couple of hours to visit. Tucked away in the rear of the museum is Wingham’s 19th Century police cell which housed Jimmy Governor following his capture and prior to his transportation to Sydney for trial and execution. Information and photos of Jimmy Governor are on display in the recently restored cell. The museum is open seven days a week between 10am and 4pm (02) 6553 5823. Opposite the museum at 22 Bent Street is Kell’s Lil’ Bakery built in 1911 in a fascinating threecornered olden day building where you can
Historical Society Museum
get your fill of Timbertown meat pies (02) 6553 0081. Then there are the Australian Hotel (1889), the National Bank (1885), and the Wingham Hotel (1880s). Around the town are numerous well looked after heritage-style homes enhancing what is a neat and tidy township. At the end of the street in which the museum sits is the famous Wingham Brush, a beautiful subtropical lowland rainforest. The Brush is one of only a few remnants of this rare rainforest in Australia and is a significant roosting and maternity site for grey-headed flying foxes. Take a walk through the rainforest on the Graham Allen Walk. The boardwalk is ideal for people of all ages and much of it is suitable for wheelchairs. It meanders through the rainforest and, on Flying Fox Circuit, you will be right below the flying foxes’ roosting site. At sunset, thousands of flying foxes fly out in search of food. You can witness this spectacular event from the riverbank. Alongside the Brush runs the Manning River, a beautiful broad stretch of meandering water. Here there are dedicated areas for picnicking, swimming and those with a yen to roar up and down the waterway in highpowered boats, lugging skiers behind. Sit with the sun on your back and marvel at the brush that comes down to the edge of the river on the opposite bank, brush that originally completely covered this land on both sides of the river. Unfortunately, it is no longer alive with the myriad of colourful birds described by travellers of bygone days. Close by is the restored Wingham Wharf - the last in a succession of cargo wharves that have operated here since the 1830s. From here, produce and passengers were transported to and from Wingham. Today it is a powerful reminder of the importance of the coastal shipping industry in the development of the region. The wharf and the Brush, together with the village green and many of the town’s heritage buildings are outstanding reminders of Wingham’s rich history. Take a walking tour of the town after picking up a map from the museum.
Early Church bell, 1850s
A great spot to get away from every day bustle of the town is the National Parks and
Wildlife’s Brimbin Nature Reserve, which includes Miss Kelly’s Crossing. Access it by driving along Cedar Party Road for 5km from Wingham Road and turning right onto the old Port Macquarie Road. For a further 4km, follow the various signs to the picnic area adjacent to the Dawson River and Reserve where you will find picnic tables, shelters, gas barbecues and toilets. Whilst exploring Wingham take a break, enjoy great coffee, and deliciously prepared morning and afternoon teas and lunches at the multi award winning Bent on Food at 19 Isabella Street. Open Monday to Friday 8am5pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am-3pm. Times may vary in the colder months. On our visit, we chose a platter for lunch prepared by Amy Lattimore one of proprietor Donna Carrier’s excellent staff. We counted over 15 different mouth-watering items on our platter ranging from jams, chutneys, cheeses, and a mix of delicious marinades. The lunch menu includes gourmet baguettes and foccacias incorporating locally smoked meats. Visitors on the go should ask about their packed picnic hampers. (02) 6557 0727. Also showcasing local produce in the area is The Tellers Restaurant in The Bank Guesthouse at 48 Bent Street opposite the town square. Located in the beautifully restored bank building where you can enjoy an impressive menu, they also have six ensuite rooms, including a two room family suite for overnight, weekend stays or longer with breakfast included. Tellers is open for breakfast and lunch Wednesday to Sunday from 8.00am and dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 6.00pm. (02) 6553 5068. A highlight of the trip from Wingham to Taree is Dennis and Elizabeth McLachlan’s Mondrook Garden Café and Gallery, two minutes from Tinonee and ten minutes from Wingham on the Scenic Route. Set amongst beautiful gardens with a big dam, many wood ducks, water hens and lorikeets galore, they serve fresh light lunches and morning and afternoon tea and cater for groups. This delightful café is wheelchair and disabled friendly; groups, coaches and 5th Wheelers are welcome (02) 6553 1423, dennis.mclachlan@bigpond.com. .
A stopover at Tinonee, one of the earliest settlements in the Manning Valley, on your way to or from Taree, is essential. Today this quaint riverside village provides a focus for arts and crafts including indigenous art, pottery and handcrafted local goods. On the banks of the Manning River, It has a stretch of water that is popular for both skiing and boating. During the 1900s, it was an important shipping trade destination. The town’s original slab gaol is on display at the Tinonee Museum in Manchester Street, open Tuesday-Friday 10am-2pm and Saturdays 12.30-3.30pm (02) 6553 1571. Also in the same street is Horace Dean Park with barbeque and picnic tables, river views and a boat ramp. A plaque here tell us that Horace Dean published the Manning River Times, the first newspaper to be circulated in the valley, a weekly, from April 15th 1865
until its demise on 17th September 1873. Tallships Reserve in Peverill Street also has river views
A RAAF Vampire Jet
Before leaving Wingham, take the time to visit the Chinese gardens at the entrance to town (when coming from Taree). These beautiful gardens hold historical significance, as they were the site of the original Chinese market gardens in the early to mid 19th Century. A suspended deck enables visitors to view the peaceful and relaxing area amidst traditional Chinese shrubs and trees. Stepping-stones lead the eye across the pond towards the small arched bridge at the southern perimeter. A number of strategically placed seats allow the visitor to enjoy the gardens from different angles. The Rotary Club of Wingham has recently received a grant of $8 000 to build a lighthouse in the garden so keep a lookout for it – and enjoy your visit to this attractive little town.

Base Station– the work and play alternative getaway It’s just on 12 months since Jayco released the Base Station. But as the months have rolled by more people are becoming Base Station owners because it offers work and play alternatives. Jayco dealers across the country have had people enjoying the accommodation section and setting up the Base Station’s storage garage area for a wide variety of uses. Like, the West Australian ultra light aircraft enthusiast, who can fit his flying machine inside. Then there’s the Victorian gem stone dealer who is fitting out the storage compartment as a display room so he can take his business to rural Australia. In Queensland a gas fitter has turned the storage section into a work area so he can
go to remote region across the State, taking with him both the comfort of stylish living up-front, and the practicality of a full workshop in the rear. The Base Station’s unique design means it can sleep up to eight people. Up front is the caravan compartment which sleeps two, with a fold out double bed extending outside the vehicle’s super-structure. Add an optional converter and the dinette provides two additional sleeping berths, while inside the garage compartment there are also two fold down single beds with the option of double bunks. At the rear, a sturdy fold-down back door-comprising the entire back of the vehicle-doubles as a ramp, so equipment and machines can be stored inside. Two cables allow the ramp to be turned into a deck. There is also a handy
built-in mechanic’s rack in the rear compartment. An internal doorway links both compartments. A toilet and shower are standard, making the Base Station completely self-sufficient. Under tow, the vehicle looks similar to Jayco’s top-end Sterling range of caravans with smooth fibreglass walls, sleek automotive finish and contemporary graphics. As with all other Jayco products, the Base Station features the company’s acclaimed ‘out-of-sight’ engineering technologies including its galvanised, extra-strength Millennium chassis, ‘Tough-frame’ construction system, and its smooth ride leaf-spring suspension and electric brake systems.
Apollo fit for a Movie star... In a characteristic show of support for the Australian film industry, recreational vehicle juggernaut Apollo Motorhome Holidays supplied makers of feature film ‘Last Ride’ a 6 Berth Euro Deluxe motorhome to use during production. The provisionally titled film stars Hugo Weaving and was filmed in South Australia. It premieres in Australia at the Adelaide International Film Festival in February 2009, and globally at the Cannes Film festival in May 2009. Apollo CEO Luke Trouchet said he is “absolutely delighted to support the Australian film industry. Films such as ‘Last Ride’ really showcase Australia’s spectacular landscapes.” Trouchet predicted the release of films such as ‘Last Ride’ would boost domestic and international tourism, particularly the self drive market. “Motorhome and campervan holidays are the ultimate way to explore our vast country, and any medium showcasing Australia’s incredible natural beauty should have the full support of the tourism industry,” he said. ‘Last Ride’ is based on the award-winning novel by Denise Young, and directed by Cannes Palme D’or winner, Glendyn Ivin. Producers have predicted that Hugo Weaving will give the “performance of his career.”

Fresh interiors for KEA motorhomes New timber-style flooring transforms vehicle living spaces
rental fleets across Australia and New Zealand, and are standard elements of new rental and sales motorhomes in production at KEA Manufacturing Company in Auckland. “It is very important to us at KEA to create vehicles that our customers are proud to travel in, feature as many home comforts as possible, and can be relied on to enhance their explorations throughout Australia and New Zealand. This latest enhancement is certainly another step in that direction,” Norman said. KEA operates the youngest fleet of rental campervans and motorhomes in Australia and New Zealand, made up of the most reliable vehicles. KEA builds its own vehicles in Sydney and Auckland, using marine construction techniques and heavy-duty, sustainable materials to ensure a highly durable, premium quality product and driving experience. KEA’s upgraded motorhomes can be purchased fresh from the KEA factory, with the Dreamtime available for $129,000.00 and the Endeavour retailing at 134,000.00. Ex-rentals of both models are also available for sale. REMEMBER, if you rent any KEA vehicle including the new fourberth motor home, KEA will take 50% of the rental price off the purchase cost, up to the value of seven days hire. This 50% credit offer is open for twelve months from the last rental date, which gives travellers plenty of time to take that next step and make significant savings on your ticket to the best way to explore Australia and New Zealand. For more information on KEA’s range of luxury campervans and motorhomes, freecall 1800 252 555 for rentals and 1800 252 201 for sales, or visit www.keacampers.com and www.keasales.com.au.
D
escribing KEA’s vehicles as apartments on wheels has never been more accurate, following the unveiling of the luxury campervan and motorhome rental and sales company’s interior enhancements to its four-berth Dreamtime and six-berth Endeavour models. One significant change is the dark oak timber-styled veneer flooring, installed as an alternative to carpets and offsetting KEA’s established interior palate of beech, brushed steel and chocolate hues. The new flooring adds warmth and depth to the spacious motorhomes, and has the practical benefits of being more durable and easier to clean than carpet. KEA is also upgrading its in-vehicle entertainment systems, with the installation of larger, HD compatible flat screen televisions with built-in DVD player and digital set top box. The television housing and controls have also been improved, making it easier to manoeuvre and view from the rear of the vehicle. And thanks to the roof-mounted solar panels, KEA’s motorhomes do not need to be plugged into external power in order for travellers to use the invehicle entertainment facilities.
46
In both the Dreamtime and Endeavour motorhomes, the dining and sitting area can be quickly configured as a large double bed – and in the four berth Dreamtime, as two full-size single beds as well. The Dreamtime also has the option of a standard double bed plus table in the rear – a popular alternative as it means travellers do not have to make the bed up each night. “Interior decorators are often able to completely transform the look and feel of a space by altering a single design point. This is exactly what we’ve done with our rental motorhome collection across Australia and New Zealand,” said KEA national vehicle sales manager – Australia, Norman Roe. “The new flooring creates a greater feeling of space, lending to an overall design reminiscent of a city terrace or apartment. This is enhanced by the spot lighting throughout the vehicle, plush furnishings, massive windows to take best advantage of natural light and views, and a colour scheme chosen to blend with any external environment.” The new design features are being retrofitted to KEA’s current

PEGASUS a new era in RV travel
There’s a certain charm and feeling of passion that filters through every Pegasus Motorhome. Twelve years of developing custom made motor homes has given Pegasus a great insight and understanding of what is important to the customer in a motor home… you only have to step inside the new 34’4” to understand that pride has gone into every aspect of this RV.
R
ecently, I had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at one of the latest AClass, double slide-out, 10.5 metre models at the Pegasus, Slacks Creek factory. Managing Director Mark McLindon gave me the run down on the state-of–the-art manufacturing process that lies beneath the smooth exterior lines of this luxury unit. The quality of workmanship that you see on the exterior and interior finishes are evidence of the engineering and craftsmanship that exists throughout this motorhome.
LET’S GET TECHNICAL Built to Australian Standards on highway coach specifications, this 34’er is powered by a rear mounted American built C7 Caterpillar diesel engine, coupled with an automatic ZF6HP 594C six speed gearbox with retarder, utilising the very best in German engineering. The body of this motorhome is mounted to a purpose built motorhome chassis, working on the latest technology from the coach industry, providing the same safety features as in a passenger vehicle. The body is built from Australian galvanized steel featuring a continuous hoop design for greater strength and safety.
Boasting two massive slide outs, generous amounts of exterior storage space for all the toys one might wish to bring along, 380 litre fuel tank, 2 x 240 watt solar panels, 24Volt purpose built diesel alternator/generator plumbed to the mains tank, this baby is designed for serious travel. With its air operated front & rear disc brakes, 4 hydraulic levelling legs, 2 front & 2 rear and the six metre remote control electric awning with wind sensor all as standard.
STEP INSIDE Inside this motorhome you will find a list of standard features to compliment the eye catching exterior, the perfect blend of contemporary style and luxury, modern innovative design, surrounded by elegant polished solid timber floors. The driver’s area of the Motorhome is set up with two flexsteel, swivel, 6 way leather captains chairs, that can be rotated in the evening to extend the conservation area, and there is enough room behind the driver’s chair when the slideout is in to be able to adjust it for a comfortable driving position. The passenger chair sits neatly above the entry and the electric drop down floor provides ample leg room and passenger comfort.
The perfect blend of contemporary style and luxury, modern innovative design, surrounded by elegant polished solid timber floors.
All the gadgets are there for the driver including UHF radio, GPS, power steering, colour reversing camera with rear bumper sensors & on screen distance display. The large 2 piece windscreen offers exceptional visibility along with electric sun visor and blinds for driver and passenger comfort. I personally like the opening drivers side window providing welcome fresh air and the added benefit of EPERB safety monitoring 24 hours a day included in case of emergency with outback travel.
LIFESTYLE & LUXURY The gourmet kitchen features solid Corian look bench tops with splashback and a big 220 litre upside down fridge/freezer - a clever idea ensuring the fridge can be accessed even when the dining room slide is retracted. A stainless steel double sink with integrated rubbish bin and drainer sit neatly next to the three burner gas stove with rangehood which is backed up by a convection microwave inbuilt immediately below it, and a handy pull out drawer for pots and pans. I found this to be a very neat user friendly installation. There is plenty of cupboard space throughout the kitchen and the full size pantry with slide out shelving is sure to please.
Behind the mirrored sliding door lies the elegant bathroo

Behind the mirrored sliding door lies the elegant bathroom with sink and vanity cabinet, full size fibreglass shower with two speed extractor fan, chrome shower taps and linen cupboard with ironing board. The single pedal-type flush toilet is in its own private room with window and extra storage cupboard.
Entering the master bedroom one immediately feels the spacious design and clever layout. The second slideout really opens up the master bedroom and for a moment it would be easy to forget that you are in a motorhome, the cupboard and storage space in this bedroom is simply amazing, there are cupboards, drawers and nooks and crannies everywhere. Exploring the Duncan Highway A less travelled route through the East Kimberley Outback by John Mack
W
Our prospecting camp near Old Halls Creek
inding through the border country between the East Kimberley region of WA and the Northern Territory is the euphemistically named Duncan Highway. This conjures up visions of a wide tarred road. It is not, but even so, it is difficult to understand why this route is so little utilised by the travelling public. It offers great scenery, some fantastic waterholes and gorges plus great camping in pristine bush country. Driving the Duncan is an opportunity to chill out and enjoy the isolation of the real outback – Kimberley style.
deposits you on the Victoria Highway just east the WA/NT Border. This is a great starting point for further adventures either into the National Parks of the NT or westwards to Lake Argyle and Kimberley Region
The southern end starts from Halls Creek on the Great Northern Highway and winds through the Kimberley Goldfields dating from 1886 before turning north and skirting the eastern side of the Purnululu (Bungle Bungle) National Park. It continues northwards heading up through historic old pastoral stations on the fringes of the Lake Argyle catchment area. After some 500 kilometres, it
The road is a well-maintained gravel surface and whilst there are corrugations in a few places, they are not too bad. When we travelled, some parts of the road were excellent, as good as or better than many sealed surfaces we have travelled on and certainly far better than the Gibb River Road – so popular with adventure travel tourists.
Less adventurous travellers sticking to the hard top will still have a pleasant journey and will complete the Halls Creek to Kununurra trip in about three to four hours – but they will have missed much that a more leisurely drive along the Duncan will achieve.
There are plenty of opportunities for parking-up in genuine bush surroundings, in beautiful gorges or close to water at the creeks and waterholes along the route. The best time of the year to travel this road is from April to September, generally known as ‘The Dry’ in the north. The days are warm and sunny with easterly breezes and the evenings are cool, just brilliant weather for going bush.
A reminder of the tough conditions on the old goldfields
Our campsite overlooking Marella Gorge
Travelling east from Halls Creek the road passes the China Wall, a large outcropping quartz reef typical of the surrounding gold country. Occasionally small nuggets are found here, especially after a rainstorm. It is worth keeping your eyes open – particularly on patches bare rock along the washaways – you may find a golden souvenir of your trip. A few kilometres further down the road, there is a turn-off to Caroline Pool. This is only a very short drive off the road and offers a quiet spot for a picnic or an overnight stop. During the 1860’s there was a remarkable woman in Old Halls Creek by the name of Mother O’Neal who was a renowned midwife and ‘sly grogger’. She kept a herd of pigs, each named after members of the local constabulary with whom she had a very antagonistic relationship. She usually dressed in big Cossack boots, a short skirt and wide brimmed hat with a short clay pipe and a .45 calibre revolver as accessories. The latter resulted in her other name – ‘Mrs Dead Finish’. According to the local folklore, before she died she threw a bag of gold sovereigns into the pool here below the rock bar. Old Halls Creek was the hub of the 1886 gold rush that developed into a thriving town of over six thousand people of all nationalities and boasting twelve pubs. However, by the turn of the century it was in decline and today little remains other than the ruins of the mud-brick post office, the cemetery and the layout of some streets. It is worth a walk through the small cemetery, as this will paint a stark picture of the harsh conditions during the early rushes. A small caravan park offers budget accommodation and meals. There are BBQ places along the creek line under tall shady trees and some good swimming holes. As old Halls Creek it is only fifteen kilometres from the ‘new town’ on the Great Northern Highway, it is worth a visit to just to soak up some of the history of the gold rush days. The road continues eastwards twisting and turning through the hilly country and there are many tracks leading off into the bush on both sides of the road. Created by prospectors in their search for gold some of these tracks lead to historic old mine-sites that dot the region. Palm Springs
Some local prospectors make a reasonable, but unreliable, income detecting for gold. Nuggets of up to 35 ounces have been found, but it is not easy money. To find payable gold you need the right equipment, a bagful of prospecting skills, tenacity and a bit of luck. However many small nuggets are ‘specked’ in the wet season just by wandering along the many small creek lines and carefully inspecting any exposed bedrock for the tiny flecks of gold that have been washed out from the banks of the creek. Using a metal detector I once unearthed a cache of old Dutch East Indies coins here that dated back as far as 1759 - you have to wonder about how they came to be cached on these old goldfields? You never know what will turn up; I met a man who made an unexpected discovery. He was watching a fresh water crab in a small run-off creek, as he approached it scuttled under a rock; turning it over to get a closer look at the crab, he was astonished to see a 16-gram nugget lying there glinting in the sun. Forty kilometres into your journey you will arrive at the mini-oasis of Palm Springs followed, three kilometres later, by a track leading to Saw Pit Gorge. Situated on the Black Elvira River both places offer recognised overnight camping but there are
no facilities other than rubbish bins. These are restful places and well worth a couple of days of exploring. . Palm Springs commenced life as a Chinese market garden and store during the gold rush years of the late 1880’s. The old building, occupied until the 1980’s, is now only ruins providing a gallery for graffiti and home to resident bats and rats. The remnants of the vegetable gardens are still visible, bananas grow on the fertile black soil on the riverbank and date palms, introduced by the Afghans, are becoming an invasive pest. Amongst this detritus of a century of change lies a long abandoned old Bedford truck like a sentinel at the entrance to the old store building. Sidetracks off the road into Saw Pit Gorge lead to other spots along the river, but these are best tackled in a 4WD. Close by we found a small ‘one man and his dog’ sized hot mineral spring at the base of the range behind the gorge. This crystal clear little spring, tucked in under the canopy of trees at the end of a tight gully, is fed by water a good ten degrees warmer than the main pool at Saw Pit Gorge Continuing along the Duncan Highway for a further 107 kilometres you arrive at Marella Gorge on Nicholson Station. For many years, this station was part of the huge Vestey Empire that owned a string of properties in the north and the country’s biggest abattoir in Rockhampton. As always in station country leave any gates as you find them, be very careful with your fires and take out all your rubbish. For permission to camp at the gorge contact Nicholson Station on (08) 91687393. The turn-off to the gorge is unmarked, other than a 1080 poison bait sign, but if you cross Calico Creek, you have gone about a kilometre too far. Turning left off the highway, the start of the gorge is less than one kilometre away and there is a gate halfway along the track. This access road is a little bumpy in places and great care should be taken if towing caravans with low ground clearance, our Bushtracker cruised through easily. There is a choice of campsites and nearly all of them have views of the river and gorge, some requiring a more adventurous approach via the steep banks. The gorge has been formed by the Johnson River through millions of years of erosion and weathering cutting deep into the otherwise fairly flat country. Deep pools are joined by gently flowing shallows and the birdlife is prolific making for interesting walks along the banks on either side. Continuing in a northeasterly direction for twenty kilometres, you arrive at Nicholson Station where the Duncan and Buntine Highways meet. The Buntine heads northeast into the Northern Territory passing through the historic old Wave Hill Station. It is the southern access route to the Gregory National Park and a short cut to the Stuart Highway that runs up through the centre of the state. The Duncan turns north through undulating station country where squadrons of bright green budgerigars dash about and camels mix with the cattle lurking in the shade of the scrub. Soon, on the western side of the road, you will see the escarpment that delineates the eastern side of the Purnululu (Bungle Bungle) National Park. It was interesting to reflect that over there, only some 25 kilometres away,
Late afternoon at Murella Gorge the tourists were almost queuing to visit the famous park and we had not seen another vehicle all day. Our next stop was at the Negri River just north of Mistake Creek Community. There are camping areas on both sides of the river but no facilities other than abundant wood and good water. The camp area on the western side of the north bank does not have water views but there are massive slabs of smooth water worn sandstone that pave the way down to the water. These provide an easy stroll and a grandstand seat for the happy-hour refreshments while you watch the sunset over the water. Brolgas called nearby and many fish plopping noises signalled the start of evening feeding session. Near a local aboriginal community, we found some ‘modern’ aboriginal art. A stick figure scratched into the rock with arms outstretched clutching a can; the inscription read “VB Dreaming” Our final stop on the Duncan Highway was at Behn River only 65 kilometres from the Victoria Highway. There are a number of camping areas on the eastern side of the creek and we were able to park the Bushtracker overlooking the water about half a kilometre away from the road. The resident Brahman stud bull sauntered right through our camp each day when he came down for a drink but otherwise
The Black Elvira River near Palm Springs
ignored us, much to the relief of my wife and the dogs. The latter slunk off under the van in case they were called on to defend their territory. The flies at this spot were pretty rabid but interestingly they seemed to prefer the back of the shirt rather than buzzing around your head and getting in your eyes. Maybe they were Northern Territory flies that had yet to develop their full potential! After leaving Marella Gorge a few days ago, we were never sure which state we were in as we pushed our way northwards. We did pass several signs saying “NT/WA Border”, but not stating which side was which. We knew the highway terminated just on the NT side of the Border and we prepared the remaining fruit and veg we were carrying in order to pass through the quarantine checkpoint into WA. Many people assume that no fruit, vegetables, honey or flowers are allowed into WA. This is not strictly true. We carried our excess potatoes through, peeled and with all eyes removed. Pumpkins have to be peeled and deseeded, onions peeled but carrots only topped and tailed. Fruit like apples would have to be de-cored and peeled but we elected to cook ours and we also cooked our remaining tomatoes. No honey or flowers will get through; even new sealed jars of honey are not acceptable. The dogs enjoyed a
high energy breakfast as they polished off the last of our honey with their morning munchies. When we reached the quarantine checkpoint at the border, the police were supporting the Quarantine Officers and were checking vehicle registration and licence details. It is not uncommon for other services such as the Customs and Immigration Department also to run spot checks at the border so you need to be aware that you are not carrying anything you shouldn’t. Quarantine ‘sniffer dogs’ are occasionally brought in to assist in the quarantine checking process, though not on this occasion. Our Black Labrador was running around with his harness on, looking for all the world like a real ‘sniffer dog’ and it was interesting to watch the look of concern on some of the people arriving at the checkpoint. The Duncan Highway ends when it joins the Victoria Highway in the NT some fifteen kilometres from the WA border. This seems to be a great place to start another journey and there are lots of opportunities. Turning east will lead you towards the Gregory National Park, the Victoria River and Katherine. Turn west towards WA and you will shortly come to the Keep National Park on the north side of the road. Going on through the WA border and taking the first left will take you on a very pretty thirty-kilometre drive to Lake Argyle, or continue on a further 40 kilometres to Kununurra, the gateway to the East Kimberley region. Taking the Duncan Highway route from Halls Creek to Kununurra is five hundred kilometres, adding only one hundred and thirty kilometres to the trip had you gone directly up the Great Northern Highway. If you have the time to spend a few days exploring some real outback country, far from the tarred roads, then this is a very enjoyable trip. It is one journey well worth considering when planning your future travels in the Kimberley region.

Rocking Blues Festival no doubt about it 348 kms south of Sydney, at the mouth of the Wagonga Inlet, beside the sparkling Pacific Ocean you will find the sleepy seaside village of Narooma. A picturesque town with pristine beaches, crystal clear waters and some of the finest oysters I have ever eaten.
Narooma seaside lifestyle
With a population of only 3500, Narooma is a peaceful little town where locals enjoy the seaside lifestyle of fishing and swimming. The seas around Montague Island, just 11 km off Narooma, teem with marine life making the island a haven for sea birds and seals. Montague Island has the State’s only known colony of Australian fur seals as well as sea eagles, little penguins, hawks, terns, silver gulls, harriers and peregrine falcons. The Narooma visitor information centre situated on the Princes Highway on the northern side of town houses a museum on the history of Montague Island and outside you will find clean public amenities including showers for the weary traveller with ample parking for caravans or campers. All types of water sports can be enjoyed around Narooma and fishing and swimming are the most popular. Commercial fishermen operate out of Narooma but there is still plenty for the amateur with all year round catches of bream, flathead, trevally, tailor and big game fishing for the more adventurous. The town has just about everything you need to make the most of its natural environment including two caravan parks, various dining options, quaint little shops and boat charter operators. For those of you who enjoy a game of golf the Narooma Golf Course is rated one of the country’s finest – a breathtaking course perched high on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Surf Beach Holiday Park is situated in the Narooma Golf Course providing the closest accommodation to the main beach, offering powered or un-powered sites, full amenities including gas BBQs, a children’s playground, shared laundry and shop with the off-highway location providing plenty of peace and quiet.

it! Even the crazy weather couldn’t dampen the spirits of patrons or musicians. The weather was miserable to say the least it went from 32 degrees on Friday to 14 degrees on Saturday, with plenty of rain thrown in.
I was told many of the musicians who perform each year make the same statement including this years headliner Pete Murray, who decided to holiday in the area for a few days after the festival with his wife and children.
Narooma is by no means the biggest blues festival in Australia, but the event organisers did deliver a stellar line-up of international and national artists, inluding Pete Murray, Toni Childs, Brian Cadd, Dallas Frasca and her gentlemen, Smokin' Joe Kubek with Bnois King, Doc Span & Ross Williams and many, many more.
If you love your music, camping and beautiful surroundings, then this festival is for you. One thing is for sure I will be back in 2009, see you there. Words & Pictures Ruth Sullivan
Dallas Frasca and her gentlemen lit up the stage with her distinctive, gutsy, heart-felt vocal style and finger picking slide guitar. Doc Span, singer, songwriter, bluesman and passionate harmonica player was a festival highlight for me, with Toni Childs a long-standing favourite belting out some groovy tunes of my teenage years. The festival grounds houses three intimate stages under three big marquees, although some speaker re-alignments would assist with the acoustics outside the marquees, one cannot complain about the sound inside. As you stroll around the festival you find a diverse range of market stalls, delicious food vendors, bars and merchandise stores. This year’s festival clashed with the NRL Grand Finals but organisers had footy fans covered with the game being viewed on the 'Big Screen' inside the Mojo & Jellyroll stage. For me that simply meant less people in the other two tents and more room to dance.
For 362 days of the year locals enjoy a very relaxed lifestyle until October when the annual Great Southern Blues and Rockabilly Festival rocks the town.
Mojo’s Camping Village is located on the western side of the Festival on Smyth Oval, over an acre of protected grassland Mojo’s offers easy access to the 3 day festival with showers and toilets provided for exclusive use of campers. The local Lions Club cook up bacon & egg rolls and fresh coffee every morning with the loveable larrikin on the bagpipes ensuring everyone was up and at ‘em for the Monday morning exit.
This years 13th Great Southern Blues and Rockabilly Festival was rocking - no doubt about
Narooma is such a pretty town, kind of makes you want to pack up and live their permanently,
