In Kew Gardens Hills, one pulpit rabbi last week sent a stern letter to the neighborhood’s City Council member, criticizing him for support of proposals to “defund” the New York City Police Department. Another rabbi from the Queens neighborhood recently attended an online public forum with the same Council member, Rory Lancman, during which the rabbi and other members of the Jewish community took Lancman to task for backing bail reform measures last year. Both measures, say critics of Lancman, endanger public safety in general and the Jewish community in particular.
Jews can be found on all sides of the recent demonstrations against police brutality, with many major organizations and local activists voicing their unqualified support for reforming the criminal justice system. In Forest Hills, near Kew Gardens, another rabbi said he has heard a diversity of opinions among his congregants. But the Kew Gardens leaders represent wary constituencies that fear that a reduced police presence and other reforms there will lead to more street crime. And, shaken by the looting that took place in Midtown Manhattan during early protests over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody in May, some in their communities say they are considering moving

n Israeli startup unveiled last week what it said was the world’s first plant-based steak created using industrial 3D-printing. Redefine Meat said it will start testing the vegan cuts at high-end restaurants in Israel as soon as next month, followed by marketing in Israel and elsewhere. “We are actually printing steaks,” said Eshchar Ben-Shitrit, who set up the company, formerly known as Jet Eat, in 2018. The “ink” is made out of plantbased ingredients: proteins from le-
gumes and grains to create the muscle texture, fats to mimic beef fat and natural flavors and colors to mimic blood and juice. The “alt-steak,” said Ben-Shitrit, “is both kosher and pareve.” Israeli chef Assaf Granit, in a video for The Great Big Jewish Food Festival, said he tasted the printed “beef” and that eight out of 10 people wouldn’t know the difference between it and real meat. The global meat substitute market is expected to reach $8.1 billion by 2026, according to data firm Allied Market Research.

I’m confident the staff will be reiterating it and making sure there is proper hand washing and that other hygiene precautions are taken.” Lisa said her daughter has been to the camp, the Bernice Jacobson Day School & Camp in Old Westbury, L.I., since she was 2 and “knows everybody and they know her. It was important that after not having [in-person] school all this time to be able to socialize with children her own age and to have physical activities. And she was anxious to see her friends.” While sleepaway camps in the state have been closed, Jewish day camps have been cautiously opening with a combination of coronavirus testing, temperature checks and activities meant to enforce social distancing. Enrollment is down, but the camps and their funders think it is important to offer children and their parents as normal a summer as they can. The Jacobson Day School and Camp is oper-

or Orthodox Jewish advocacy groups, the last day of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2020 session brought a big win. On Tuesday, the high court handed school voucher proponents a victory in ruling that a state-run scholarship program funded by tax-deductible gifts could not exclude religious schools. The court split 5-4 in the Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue case, with Chief Justice John Roberts providing the swing vote by joining the conservative justices. “A State need not subsidize private education,” Roberts wrote. “But once a State decides to do so, it cannot disqualify some private schools solely because they are religious.” The case was significant for Orthodox Jewish advocacy groups that have fought alongside Christian groups for expanded state aid to parochial schools. hree key government blunders are to blame for the intensity of Israel’s new Covid-19 wave, a former Health Ministry chief has claimed. “We could have [had] a smaller second wave if we would have treated the situation better,” Gabi Barbash, a former director-general of the Health Ministry, told The Times of Israel. And he cautioned against pointing fingers at citizens for their conduct, sugIsrael gesting that the buck should stop with leaders. “The public is not clear of responsibility, but I was raised in the army, with the saying ‘there are no bad soldiers, there are bad commanders,’” said Barbash.
been caused by “management issues,” according to Barbash, who added that Israel “should have responded more and earlier.” In his view, these are the three main mistakes that account for Israel’s current situation: 1. Dangerous gatherings Barbash says the government unnecessarily rushed
to allow a resumption of gatherings — in synagogues, at event halls and elsewhere. “I’m talking about gatherings of high density people in closed environments,” he said. “Wherever this happens, this is dangerous.” He added: “They should have not opened these things.” He said there is no need for protracted discussions over which places should be open and which shouldn’t, as one simple rule should govern all decisions. “The issue is not the place; it’s gatherings of more than 10 or 15 people,” he argued. 2. Testing neglected Israel has “neglected the development of efficient testing,” according to Barbash. He said: “We’re still waiting two to four days to

His comments come as the number of new daily virus cases, which had dropped to low double digits through most of May, is soaring to some 1,000 per day, and the number of active cases is at an all-time high of more than 11,600. New restrictions reducing gathering sizes at synagogues and event halls to 50 went into effect Monday morning, and the cabinet is to consider further restrictions on Monday evening. But Barbash, professor of epidemiology and preventative medicine at Tel Aviv University and former CEO of the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, says the government could have prevented things getting this bad. He said that while the current government brought together Likud and its former foe Blue and White ostensibly so they could deal with the emergency, “it didn’t help in any way, it didn’t do anything good.” Barbash added: “It’s a corona government that is really not about the corona.” In his view, the government both failed to take preventative measures and went too far in easing restrictions in late April and early May, because it didn’t stand firm in the face of pressure from the public. “As a result they have taken steps they shouldn’t have taken,” he said. The intensity of the second wave has largely

continued from page 6 moral and ethical questions of our time. When we learn together, we are always seeing at least one other perspective. This sense of personal community builds skills in not only reading texts closely but listening and valuing viewpoints other than our own; it also complements the texts, artifacts, ideas and communities that we study, which themselves cultivate empathy and moral reasoning. Similarly, when we pray communally, we are enriched by the multiple voices that amplify our prayers to the Divine. And the prayers themselves emphasize our obligations to perform acts of lovingkindness and to improve the world. So yes, we must advance science to develop a vaccine. But just as important is a learning experience driven by humanistic values that teaches us what to do in the interim — that helps us answer how we can help each other and the most vulnerable among our communities during this protracted crisis for our society. Many liberal arts schools teach the
Greek classics; at JTS close readings of ancient Jewish texts play a similar role in providing a deeper perspective on contemporary issues. And the only way we can foster this sort of learning is by creating innovative programs for a post-Covid-19 future. This spring, I guided our relatively quick and seamless pivot to virtual learning. In doing so, we have been careful to avoid the term “remote” learning as it implies a distance that is the antithesis of the academic experience we — and, I suspect, our peers in colleges and universities across the country — envision. This summer is a key transitional moment — one in which we must move from a triaged version of virtual learning to a more thoughtful and fully planned program. For many institutions like us, that is going to mean a hybrid academic experience, with a combination of virtual and inperson learning options. We must use the tools available to us — virtual and otherwise — to foster an immersive learning environment centered on a profound sense of connection among students and faculty, enhance our students’ and institutions’ moral voice in this world. n

dath Israel, two major Orthodox organizations, filed briefs on behalf of the plaintiffs. “Over the past decade, the Orthodox Union’s advocacy work has spearheaded the creation or expansion of many state aid programs to support parental choice in education,” Allen Fagin, executive vice president of the Orthodox Union, said in a statement applauding the ruling. “Today’s strong ruling from the Supreme Court solidifies the legal bases for these programs and bolsters their long-term benefits for the Jewish community and other faith communities.” “Agudath Israel has played a leading role in advocating for programs that make it easier for parents to choose private and religious schools,” Rabbi A. D. Motzen, Agudath Israel of America’s national director of state relations, said in a statement. “Today’s ruling endorses Agudah’s longtime position that states may not bar families from using state aid at the school of their choice simply because they choose a religious option.” The case, in which the Montana Supreme Court had ruled that a scholarship program funded by tax-deductible donations had to be dismantled because scholarships used for religious schools would violate the state constitution’s “no-aid” clause, was viewed as a proxy in the fight over school vouchers. School vouchers are programs through which states allow parents to use taxpayer money to pay for tuition at private schools, most of which are religious in the United States. Critics of no-aid clauses, also known as Blaine Amendments, have cited their origins in arguing against their enforcement. The amendments, which were rooted in anti-Catholic sentiment, were added to state constitutions in the late 19th century to prohibit the use of state funds for religious private schools. It’s unclear whether and how the ruling will affect Jewish schools in the short term. The ruling does not compel states to offer voucher programs, and New York and New Jersey, home to the country’s largest Orthodox Jewish communities and most Orthodox schools, do not permit vouchers. Lawmakers there
are unlikely to create voucher programs, which are favored by political conservatives. Still, the case matters because it nudges open the door for state funding to flow more often to religious schools. It follows a 2017 case in which the court ruled that a church could not be excluded from receiving government benefits because of its status as a religious organization. “If you wanted to boil down the key contribution of the opinion, it’s the application of the rule from 2017 to schools,” said Michael Helfand, associate dean for faculty and research at Pepperdine University’s Caruso School of Law. “Ultimately it nudges the ball down the road in terms of the ability of schools to get equal treatment.” That is increasingly the agenda for Orthodox groups. Fagin of the Orthodox Union told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency last week that school choice could become “one of the most important civil rights issues” of the next decade. Private schools can already receive public funding for some services, including busing and textbooks, that are extended to all students. (Many students who attend yeshivas in New York City ride buses paid for by the city.) But the broader pot of taxpayer funds goes to public schools and the students they educate, leaving families and religious groups to fund private schools. Receiving additional state funding can be a double-edged sword for private schools. Some states require students whose education is subsidized by vouchers to take state exams, with consequences flowing to schools whose students fall short. That arrangement could be complicated for Orthodox advocates, who have fought against oversight of yeshivas in New York City. In the Espinoza case, one Jewish group filed a brief supporting the original decision by the Montana Supreme Court. The Montana Association of Rabbis argued that the scholarship program violated the Free Exercise clause by using taxpayer money to pay for religious education. The group also noted that the only religious schools in Montana were Christian, meaning that the program would effectively privilege Christianity over other religions. n

continued from page 6 check at lunchtime. Counselors are required to wear a mask at all times, but campers must wear one only when entering and leaving camp. The day camp openings occurred as a federal judge backed New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision to keep all overnight camps in the state closed. The Association of Jewish Camp Operators, which represents Orthodox camps, had filed suit last month claiming that by allowing the opening of day camps, Cuomo was favoring one group of camps over another, a potential violation of religious freedom. The association also sought a restraining order that would have allowed overnight camps to operate while the issue was litigated, but U.S. District Court Judge Glenn Suddaby in Albany said it had not made a compelling enough case. Meanwhile, a Modern Orthodox camp in Pennsylvania delayed its opening after a counselor tested positive for the coronavirus upon arriving at Camp Seneca Lake, one of the few Jewish overnight camps to open in the Northeast. Elsewhere, a delay in getting the results of coronavirus tests forced the Sid Jacobson JCC to prevent nearly 20 counselors from reporting for work at its three day camps this week, according to David Black, the JCC’s executive director. All counselors had been required to have a negative test within five days of the start of camp, and Black said he hired more counselors than needed in the event this might happen. Should the governor not allow the opening of gyms, Black said there are plans to erect a tent in the parking lot for exercise classes. Rick Lewis, CEO of the Mid-Island Y JCC and the Suffolk Y JCC, said that unlike in prior years there is no bus transportation to the camps and there are no field trips. As a result, he said, camp fees have been reduced. UJA-Federation of New York is subsidizing the 17 camp programs at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds this summer in Wheatley Heights, L.I., and Staten Island (its camp in upstate Pearl River did not open because of health department regulations). The budget is part of the $6.3 million the organization is spending to support residential and day camps this summer because of the importance of camps in “Jewish identity
building, Jewish education, and in terms of having positive experiences,” said Deborah Joselow, UJAFederation’s chief planning officer. “For some families, camp is the only Jewish experience they have,” she said. “The big secret is that it has more of an impact on counselors, who learn and lead and teach and exercise their leadership skills while testing their own beliefs and values.” Several camp officials said they have spoken with parents who would like to enroll their children but kept them home this week because of concerns about the coronavirus. But Joselow said she believes that “if all goes well, they will send them the second week. … All of the community centers are working with parents to keep the kids safe. We all want a safe and healthy environment and understand the parents’ need for flexibility.” Nicole Helfman, the camp director of the Suffolk Y JCC in Commack, L.I., said she has 63 campers this summer instead of the normal 200 and that although some parents “pulled out right before camp started, others registered at the last minute. Things went beautifully today. I got choked up seeing all the smiling faces on the kids as they ran around with their friends, including my own kids. Seeing the smiles today made all of the work we put into this worth it. My two kids came home saying this was an amazing day. They needed it after being on their iPad and watching TV all day. I heard one camper tell his mother that it was the best day of camp ever.” Campers are being kept in groups of between 10 and 15 and each group will remain together for all activities throughout the summer, according to Debra Kessler, director of Summer Streeters, one of the camps at the Sid Jacobson JCC. She said that if parents want to enroll their children now, the camp will wait to get another group together rather than add to existing groups. Although day camps normally operate for eight weeks, Kessler said the Bernice Jacobson Day School & Camp delayed opening for one week in order to “train the counselors in sterilization and to clean everything in the rooms, which are constantly being cleaned.” Another change this summer is that although the camps are opening their indoor pools, the number of people in the pool area will be limited and there will be no lockers or showers available. ■

out of New York City. Many, but not all, are Orthodox, or politically conservative, or both. “We feel we’re under siege … we’re extremely upset,” Rabbi Yoel Schonfeld, spiritual leader of the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills, told The Jewish Week. He was among several Jewish residents of his neighborhood who took part in the recent meeting with Lancman, a progressive Democrat who has supported bail reform and NYPD defunding. “We let him have it,” the rabbi said. They cited what they called an increase in crime there since last year, when the Council approved liberalized bail procedures. “It’s terrible,” Rabbi Schonfeld told Lancman, as the legislation released more dangerous criminals onto the streets of the city. “They know it’s a revolving door.” David Pollock, associate executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, said NYPD statistics do not reflect the anecdotal claims of increased crime in the past
year in Kew Gardens Hills or other heavily Jewish neighborhoods. “It’s perception,” he said. Jews have millennia-old experiences of being the “canary in the coal mine,” of being the first victims of society-wide discrimination and lawlessness, Pollock said. However, he added, “So far we haven’t seen it.” Rabbi Gerald Skolnik of the Forest Hills Jewish Center, a Conservative synagogue, said many members of his politically diverse area are less to the right than those in Kew Gardens Hills. “I haven’t heard widespread opposition to bail reform and NYPD defunding from residents of my neighborhood,” he said. “Most don’t feel that way.” The varied Jewish reactions to criminal justice reform follow a fault line in the Jewish community that has become more evident in recent years: between a largely liberal majority and a minority that tends to be more religiously observant and more likely to vote Republican. Politically conservative Jews are speaking out against steps that they say will make more crime, some of it of an anti-Semitic nature, an inevitability. This fear has been exacerbated by deadly attacks on Jews in recent

Liberal members of the Jewish community support many of the new reforms, calling them necessary to counter police excesses and to redress years of institutional racism. Since June, more than 500 Jewish organizations and synagogues in the United States have signed on to a letter that asserts support for “the Black-led movement in this country that is calling for accountability and transparency from the government and law enforcement.” The letter calls Black Lives Matters the “current day civil rights movement” in the United States. Conservative Jewish groups, however, are focusing on a 2016 platform written by the Movement for Black Lives, a constituent of the wider BLM movement, that demonized Israel. They also point to reports of vandalism and rhetoric aimed at Jews during some of the demonstrations taking place around the country. Jewish neighborhoods may be a target of future attacks by people affiliated with BLM, some conservative Jews say.
T
‘Shame on You’
his internecine debate, which threatens to weaken the already frayed black-Jewish coalition that coalesced in the civil rights era, is taking place in the context of a recent spike in crime here. The city surpassed 400 shootings in the first half of the year for the first time since 2016; the 205 shootings in June were the high-
est for that month since 1996; the city logged 125 shootings in the first three weeks of this month, more than double the number recorded over the same period last year. Some attribute the rise to tensions surrounding the pandemic and the unrest, as well as the start of summer, when crime tends to spike. Police officials and police unions blame criminal justice reforms put in place over the last few years by lawmakers and prosecutors. Those changes, which include efforts by the mayor’s office to reduce the population of the Riker’s Island jail complex, have put more violent criminals back on the street and erased deterrents and consequences for carrying guns and shooting them, the police have argued. These figures are leading some congregants to consider moving away, said the spiritual leader of a major Manhattan synagogue who asked that its name and where it is located not be named. “They are demoralized, frightened,” the rabbi said. “So-called bail reform plays an important role” in the increase in crime, said the rabbi, who spoke on condition of anonymity, saying that he feared being attacked by people who disagree with his views. The bail reform law, which was subsequently amended by the State Legislature, was designed to prevent indigent people accused of a crime from being held in jail indefinitely while awaiting trial and to give judges more discretion in setting bail and other conditions of pretrial release. The basic framework established by the original bail reform law has not changed. For most misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies, judges are still required to release people with the least restrictive conditions necessary to reasonably assure the person will come back to court. For these crimes, cash bail is still prohibited. The rabbi also rejected calls to “defund” the police. “I was as horrified as anyone by the murder of George Floyd,” the rabbi said. “The answer” to such atrocities, he said, is “reform, training. The answer is not getting rid of the police.” All of those who spoke to The Jewish Week for this story stressed that defunding means not an elimination of police departments, but a reallocation of resources, shifting some responsibilities that should not require armed police to trained personnel like mental health professionals. Barbash acknowledged that thousands of tests are performed per day, but said that the long turnaround time means that valuable time is lost in putting people who encountered carriers into quarantine. He also believes that it makes some people hesitant to get tested, given than the wait for results

Schools mismanaged When schools reopened in early May, children studied in small groups, smaller than regular classes, as a measure to stop the spread of the virus. But this so-called capsule arrangement was quickly stopped, and regular class sizes were restored. According to Barbash this was a major mistake. “Schools should have either stayed closed or allowed only 15 kids in classes,” he said. “Kids who are above nine should be treated like adults, and shouldn’t gather in groups of more than 10 to 15.” ■

‘Humor Is An Angle on the Truth’ Remembering the comic genius Carl Reiner. head to see that side, the bright side, the silly side, the absolute truth side that people don’t want to see.” The funniest comic ever? He says there are too many to name, and then adds, “In my life it’s Mel Brooks.”
Sandee Brawarsky Culture Editor Editor’s Note: The comic legend Carl Reiner, who died on June 29 at his home in Beverly Hills at the age of 98, spoke to The Jewish Week’s Sandee Brawarsky in 2003. We reprint the article here as a tribute to Reiner, who wrote for Sid Caesar’s pioneering “Your Show of Shows,” created “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and acted and produced in a career that spanned more than a half-century.

hen Carl Reiner answers the door to his Manhattan apartment and leads me to his living room, I can’t help but hum the theme song to “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” half expecting that we’ll find a sunken living room. Here, there are no steps to slip on and Mary Tyler Moore is nowhere in sight. But within seconds, he makes me laugh, as he has been doing for Americans for more than 50 years. The 81-year-old has been eliciting laughs for most of his life. As a second-grader in the Bronx, he had his class giggling and applauding when he put both feet behind his head and walked around the room on his hands. He learned to mimic accents and expressions early on, and would also Appreciation repeat stories and routines he’d hear on the radio, in the style of the performer, for his friends and family. He loved the approbation of laughter and still does. Reiner is tall, energetic and engaging, punctuating many sentences with facial exaggerations and hand movements; jokes flow naturally. In conversation, he shifts into the role of a British butler, an aging Eastern European Jew, an African-American musician, as he talks about his life, his humor and his new memoir, “My Anecdotal Life” (St. Martin’s). In the book, Reiner presents his own “literary variety show,” retelling stories about his years acting in and writing for Sid Caesar’s pioneering “Your Show of Shows,” playing straight man to Mel Brooks in their comic recording “The 2000 Year Old Man” and creating and co-starring in “The Dick Van Dyke Show” — which ran from 1961 to 1966 and still appears in reruns — based on his own life. In short chapters with descriptive titles — “My Son the Hall of Famer” describes his showing up a day early to be honored at his alma mater, Evander Childs High School — he describes his experiences writing and directing “Something Different,” which began as busywork for his bored secretary and played on Broadway and filming “Where’s Poppa?,” with its streaking scene, in Central Park. Often, he’s self-effacing, offering accounts of embarrassing moments, like the time, as an 18-year-old playing Shakespeare, he mimicked a theater director with a stroke, not realizing that the man didn’t really mean him to follow his example so exactly. The winner of 12 Emmy awards and one Grammy along with the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain Prize for Humor, he got his theatrical start at a Berkshires adult summer camp called Allaben Acres. During the

summer of 1942, he was a resident performer before joining the U.S. armed forces where he worked “securing our nation’s freedom by touring the Pacific in an army musical entitled “Shape Ahoy.” Asked to define humor, he immediately responds, “Anything that makes you laugh.” Then he continues, “It’s the stating of the absolute truth that everybody’s thinking, but putting it is such a way that allows you to vent, to laugh. After that, he’d be pulled into a shul in a groundfloor apartment across the street from his home to make a minyan, and he recalls doing the kind of double talk he’d become known for in television, mixing words and accents so that it sounded like he was speaking another language fluently. All of his friends were Zionists who belonged to a Revisionist club where they wore uniforms, and he attended too. “I wasn’t interested in politics,” he admits. “I was more interested in making laughs.” When he was about 15, he left the group to start taking drama classes downtown. The book is dedicated to his mother Bessie. She was the one who’d hit him with a yardstick while growing up — “Not in the head, Bessie,” his father would inject — but loved him well. In later years, she’d watch “Your Show of Shows” and always thought they should have featured him more, even when he appeared in almost every act. He frequently makes references in conversation to his wife of 59 years, Estelle, whom he met at Allaben Acres, and he introduces her warmly when she joins us in the living room. They live mostly
a children’s book coming out, “Tell Me a Scary Story But Not Too Scary” — a line he would hear from a grandson, the son of his son Rob. “Everything can be used,” he quips. He’s also working on a novella “nnnnn,” about a writer struggling to finish his book. It’s a book within a book that begins in the Garden of Eden. It may, in part, deal with the writing of the Bible, exploring Reiner’s own sense that “if there is a God, God is inside of everyone,” that when writers get ideas and don’t quite know where they come from, they come from the God within. He’s also involved in an animated show for TV Land that airs in July, titled “The Alan Brady Show” (the fictional television show on “The Dick Van Dyke Show”)

He explains that he now uses the shoulder twist as a writing technique. When he can’t think of a word, he turns his head sharply to the left. In his Beverly Hills home, that twist turns him so that he’s looking out of window, directly at a tree. “If you turn your head way to the left, it opens a passage. There’s a flow of information from one side of the brain,” he says, demonstrating. “I’ve never told this before, I’m laughing.” To an unseen audience, he continues, “If you’re sitting in a room with a window in the other direction, try it in the other direction. If the room is windowless, try looking at a picture of trees. Short of that, keep a big fat thesaurus next to you.” Reiner’s a busy man. In the fall, he has
where he’ll be the voice of Brady. And he’s working on a film about dogs who talk where he’s the voice of one, and a series called “Pride of the Family” about lions, where he’ll be the voice of the head of the family. In “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” Reiner made cameo appearances as Brady, the creator of the show whose writers are Rob Petrie (Van Dyke), Buddy Sorrell (Morey Amsterdam) and Sally Rogers (Rose Marie). Rob and Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) lived in New Rochelle, as Reiner did in those years. Their son Richie (Larry Matthews) would now be 47. Recently, Reiner was at an awards ceremony with several of the actors — Amsterdam passed away — and asked if they’d take part in a remake of the show, and they agreed. He wrote it, and this fall, CBS is presenting a show updating all of their lives. “It flew out of me,” he says of the script, noting that he knows these people so well. “They are me and I’m them.” ■
n the world of Orthodox Judaism, men may run the synagogues — but Lenora Garfinkel built them. Garfinkel was one of the first women to study architecture at the prestigious Cooper Union College in New York and went on to build Jewish community buildings across the New York metropolitan area over the course of a career spanning more than six decades. Her designs included the massive Viznitz chasidic synagogue in Kaser, the Atrium wedding venue in Monsey, and multiple schools and ritual bathhouses. “There are very few frum [religious] architects with a sheitel [wig] with five kids that are specializing in frum buildings,” said Garfinkel’s daughter Letitia Dahan Forspan. “She was an expert in the halachot [Jewish laws] of building religious buildings, mikvehs and shuls based on halacha. That’s why they came to her. She sat with any rabbi making these plans like one of them.” Garfinkel died of Covid-19 on April 29 at the age of 89. Within a week, tragedy struck the family again, when Garfinkel’s son Efraim died of the disease on May 3, followed days later by his own son Doniel. Efraim
Garfinkel was 66 when he died and Doniel Garfinkel was 46. “I went from one shiva to the next shiva,” said Forspan, referring to the seven-day Jewish mourning period. Lenora Garfinkel was born in the Bronx in 1930. After graduating high school, she wanted to attend Cooper Union but was told that the entrance exam was on Shabbat, when traditionally observant Jews are barred from writing. After attending Hunter College for a year, she reapplied and demanded a test on another day. “We all should be one tenth of what [my mother] was and emulate every part of her personality,” Forspan said. “She had 50 great-grandchildren and each was as if it was her own child. She was a powerhouse woman.” With three members of the same family all sick with Covid-19, much of the burden of care fell on Forspan’s son, Ariel Dahan. “The whole hospital experience was traumatic because we couldn’t go in to see them, didn’t know what was going on with them,” said Dahan. “They were on ventilators and the doctors would call you once a day if you were lucky.” Two of Garfinkel’s sons, Eliezer and Chaim, followed her footsteps and became architects. ■

The Price We’ll Pay for Overconfidence
our months into the coronavirus pandemic and counting, we can’t even begin to feel confident about reopening. While much of the rest of the world is cautiously returning to normal, cases are spiking across the country. While our own area was hit hard in the first wave, officials and healthcare providers responded in ways that should have been a model for the rest of the country. That much of their example went unheeded has exposed flaws in our nation’s leadership, its body politic
and its health care system. Israel too is facing a second wave, just two months after declaring victory over the novel coronavirus (see story on page 7). Sky News Middle East correspondent Mark Stone described the price we all are paying for overconfidence. “In Israel, the lockdown was rightly lifted. But then the armor against the virus fell away fast: the masks slipped down, the distancing got smaller, the gatherings grew larger. We are suffering the consequences now.”

Jewish Week has decided to move faster in the direction of a digitalfirst enterprise. Starting in August, the weekly print edition of The Jewish Week will go on hiatus, while we concentrate on bringing you an all-digital model that will satisfy our longtime audience, find a new generation of readers and enable us to more precisely target our journalism and advertising to the wide geographic expanse of the New York Jewish community. We believe that the time is ripe to create a business and Jewish journalism model for the future, one that breaks away from the increasingly difficult financial realities of the printed page and embraces the space where more and more people are accessing their Jewish news. And in doing so we are pursuing a number of exciting collaborations, soon to be announced, that will position us for a healthy, prosperous future, and that will set a standard for other Jewish media outlets and agencies. We also are confident that a digital-first model will enhance our ability to focus on what we do best: the quality journalism, provocative opinions and essential cultural coverage that the New York Jewish community deserves. While the method of delivery will evolve, our mission remains unchanged: to

Legality Is One Thing; Wisdom Is Another
Jonathan Tobin is right that Israel would be legally justified in extending its law to part of the disputed territories (“A Dishonest Debate About ‘Annexation’”, June 26). He all but ignores, however, the difference between what is legal and what is wise. Israel has made a great deal of progress diplomatically in recent decades. Although, as Tobin claims, most Arab states will not, with or without annexation, agree to full diplomatic relations in the foreseeable future, many have developed quietly cooperative relationships. Elsewhere in the world, Israel’s diplomatic standing has improved greatly. Why endanger these gains? As to the U.S., there is reason to worry about the gains made by antiZionist progressives in the Democratic Party. There are, however, many moderates, Jews and non-Jews, who are friends of Israel and who seek to fight this trend. Why make their job harder? The fact that Israel is acting “with the backing of a U.S. peace plan” will mean little if, as appears likely, the administration proposing that plan is repudiated by the electorate in November. Israel benefits from being seen as a bipartisan issue. The proposed annexation does not further that perception. Its only rational purpose is to further Prime Minister Netanyahu’s domestic political objective of surviving his pending corruption trial. Douglas Aronin Forest Hills, Queens
Historic Agreements Envisioned Two States
In his opinion piece “A Dishonest Debate About ‘Annexation’” (June 26), Jonathan Tobin states that the “two-state solution died in the explosions of the second intifada” and that “annexation” would be an incorrect word for extension of Israeli law to the West Bank settlements and Jordan Valley, as they never belonged to any other people or nation since Britain possessed them. He may be correct on both of these points. He also writes that the “San Remo Agreement of 1920 and the League of Nations Mandate guaranteed the right of Jews to settle in these lands.” However, these agreements were vague on whether a Jewish “national home” (envisioned in the prior Balfour Declaration) meant a Jewish state, and how much land such a home would encompass. The agreements also called for “safeguarding the civil and reli-
gious rights of the Palestinian Arabs and [significantly] the rights of Jewish communities in any other country.” The U.N. Partition Plan of 1947 actually delineated separate Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem to be an international city. Joseph Ades Tarrytown, N.Y.
Jews Mustn’t Ignore Hate From Marchers
Michael Koplow’s “Why Zionists Should Stand with Black Lives Matter” (June 19) whitewashes the anti-Semitic and anti-Zionist sentiment heard in Black Lives Matter groups, considering it “ancillary to their focus.” But the anti-Semitism goes beyond words, as I have seen reports of synagogues vandalized amid protests and hateful shouting at Jews by people marching for racial justice. Some also demonize Israel. If BLM the concept is to mean anything, it must mean respect for others, including Jews. Too often Jews whitewash attacks on Jews and Israel as just talk and meaningless. It is not merely that we as Jews must stand up for our rights, but hold accountable the BLM organization just as the BLM movement holds white racism accountable. Not only must we stand up, but so must black Americans. I support BLM the movement, but I denounce BLM the organization and all those Jews and black and white people who won’t denounce them as well. Criticizing Trump Promotes Disunity
Our nation is as polarized as it has ever been in the last 160 years, since perhaps the Civil War. There is little any of us in the Jewish community can do about that. However, we can do something about the splits within our own people. I would therefore urge the editors of The Jewish Week to eschew divisive editorials and opinion pieces. Articles criticizing segments of our community like the charedi Orthodox are not constructive. Andrew SilowCarroll’s “Charlottesville Was the Unmasking of the ‘Wartime President’” (June 30) was also such a piece. The readers of your paper include those

The Jewish future can’t be all or nothing, writes Roberta Kwall.
I
’ve built my Jewish practice from the bottom up. What I mean is, I’ve never felt “commanded” to keep kosher, observe Shabbat or go to synagogue — not by a parent nor a rabbi, and not by God. Even if God had directly ordered me to pay my kids’ day school tuition, I would have pushed back. Hard.
Andrew Silow-Carroll
But I do keep, observe and go — and paid that tuition — not because I feel commanded, but because I feel compelled. As I entered adulthood, I found the rituals and traditions of Judaism compelling. I incorporated more and more of them into my life — and, with my wife’s support, my family’s life — until the boundaries between Jew and any other identity I had disappeared. I do these things because it’s what Jews do and because they bring meaning, connection and a sense of history to my life. Why other Jews do these things — well, that’s up to them. Roberta Kwall writes about these “bottom-up choices” for making a meaningful Jewish life — that is, outside of a “strictly observant lifestyle” — in her new book, “Remix Judaism: Preserving Tradition in a Diverse World” (Rowman & Littlefield). It’s a book for families for whom Jewish tradition “connotes positive associations and the desire for transmission,” and yet for whom the language of “commandedness does not apply.” Kwall, a professor at Chicago’s DePaul University College of Law, gives permis-
sion for the bottom-uppers to consider their Jewish lives authentic without worrying they don’t measure up to someone else’s religious ideals. It asserts ritual as a “tool for transmission of Jewish tradition in non-Orthodox communities.” When I spoke to Kwall a few weeks back (we met last year at The Conversation, the annual Jewish Week retreat for Jewish thinkers and leaders), I told her how the book basically described my own Jewish choices (emphasis on “choices”). “There’s a fluid spectrum for most people during their lives in terms of faith, but they don’t necessarily make the connection of ‘I believe in God, and therefore I believe I am commanded to do a mitzvah,’” agreed Kwall, who describes herself as “very observant.” She continued, “That notion of commandedness, which even the Conservative movement has struggled with, that’s not going to motivate them.” Rather, “Personal meaning will motivate them. Identity and having a connection to Judaism and to the Jewish people will motivate them.” She urges families and Jewish institutions to provide opportunities for learning and doing Jewish rituals and holiday observance — not necessarily as the whole package, but as essential elements of a more meaningful Jewish life. So perhaps Remixers light Shabbat candles, enjoy a traditional Friday night dinner — and then pull up a movie on Netflix. “If you’re going to be successful in transmitting Jewish tradition in a liberally religious context, you have to be OK with not letting those obstacles drag you down, but say, OK, your movie is remix, that’s okay, because your kids will remember that Shabbat dinner, and that will be a part of what they really value and they treasure,” said Kwall. But I noted how a lot of traditionalists dismiss such a con-

Kwall insists Judaism can’t be perpetuated if divorced from its traditions and holy days. “If you cannot tap into the rituals,” she said, “even if you’re not performing them all in the way that they are traditionally performed, you’re not going to have anything to transmit.” There are limits, however, to how much you can remix Judaism until the original in-
gredients are unidentifiable. Kwall’s legal expertise is in intellectual property, where she learned the concept of “moral rights” — which essentially asks how much a work can be changed and modified and still be the work of its creator. “It occurred to me one day that you could ask the same thing about Jewish tradition,” she said. Remix Judaism, she writes, is based on the idea that “new approaches to Jewish tradition must be steeped in historical authenticity and performed consistently.”
“Remix Judaism” speaks to a moment of sharp Jewish polarity, when a vast majority of Jews tell pollsters that being Jewish is more important than doing Jewish — or, as Kwall puts it, 15 percent of Jews are “doing everything, and the rest of everybody else is pretty much doing nothing.” “That’s not acceptable, that’s simply not acceptable. We live in too much of a polarized world to begin with,” she said. “And I do believe so much that there’s so much beauty in Jewish tradition even for people who are not motivated by commandedness. I believe that there is something that can infuse their life with meaning and give them something important to pass down to the next generation.” n

An Israeli Settler on What Americans Don’t Understand About Annexation
itzpe Yericho, West Bank — It’s been surreal watching from Israel as Americans discuss my future. I’ve gotten used to presidents spending years developing plans for my neighborhood and other towns in Judea and Samaria, also known as the West Bank — they mean well and I truly appreciate their efforts. But recently I’ve been thrown by all the attention we’ve been receiving from the American Jewish establishment. I’ve watched Zoom panels, Facebook Lives and read countless op-eds about my future and Israel’s annexation

plan for parts of the West Bank. All the attention is gratifying, but I have noticed that many of the discussions, panels and debates have been missing some important nuance. I’ve also noticed that many of these panels don’t include any speakers who are Jewish settlers or Palestinian residents of the area, which made it feel like I was watching an all-male panel discuss women’s issues or three white people discuss Black Lives Matter. When I challenged one think tank about its 20-person panel that did not include a single Palestinian or Jewish settler, I was told that the discussions centered around security issues and a resident’s perspective wouldn’t be valuable. But without a local speaker, these organizations are robbing their audience of the chance to hear a diverse set of opinions.
Rabbi Uri Pilichowski
Today’s pundits view the history of this place as only 70-100 years old. Setting aside that security experts who live here are more familiar with the security challenges we face than former American security officials, their response shows a deeper flaw in how Americans view Israel and the region.
I watched a congressman who hasn’t visited a settlement in years — if ever — host an hour-long conversation about why it’s not in Israel’s interests to extend sovereignty over the West Bank. He authored a letter, and got 189 of his colleagues to sign it, which made the same points. How can he dismiss the perspective of Israeli settlers if he hasn’t seen us or spoken to us? It’s as ridiculous as sitting in Israel explaining to Black Americans in Minneapolis that they have nothing to fear from their police department because I visited Minneapolis once eight years ago and I’ve read that their officers are trying to do the right thing. The American Jewish establishment is missing nuance in four major areas: the history that led Israel to extend sovereignty over the West Bank; the
effect extending Israeli sovereignty will have on Palestinians; our security challenges; and foreign relations. Judea and Samaria are the heartland of the Jewish homeland. As I stand here writing, I’m looking out my study’s window facing Jericho and the Jordan Valley beyond. The Torah portion we will read this week, and many others, take place within the area I can see from my window. Israel might one day decide a Palestinian state west of the Jordan River is in its interests, but that doesn’t change the fact that this area is historically Jewish land. The people of my town are proud to be today’s Zionist pioneers: Zionism aims to return Jews to their homeland, and by living here, we are fulfilling that objective. Today’s pundits view the history of this place as only
Policing Trump Doesn’t Solve Internet Hate Problem
P
resident Donald Trump has a well-established reputation for being aggressive, petty and even at times completely incoherent on Twitter. On May 29, he crassly tweeted, “When the looting starts, the shooting starts,” a phrase used by a white police commissioner in regards to racial tensions and riots in the 1960s. With the enhanced scrutiny on social media networks to stop hate speech and misinformation, Twitter has implemented inconsistent policies to “fact check” and label tweets from the president and other public figures. Facebook now plans to do the same. Unfortunately, attempts to moderate Trump’s behavior will do more harm than good. Far from solving the problem, Emily Schrader is the CEO of digital marketing firm Social Lite Creative and an expert on online anti-Semitism and hate speech. This op-ed was distributed by JTA.
it will perpetuate it: Just as the media ultimately helped Trump win the election by giving him so much air time, so, too, will these new policies backfire. Having spent the past decade working to combat antiSemitism online, and as the architect of the StandWithUs digital department, I witnessed firsthand how even the most well-intentioned effort to police online speech can easily run into pitfalls or produce results that are the opposite of what’s intended. Twitter has long faced criticism for political bias from many directions. The far right argues that Twitter has an agenda of silencing right-wing figures such as Laura Loomer, and most recently Katie Hopkins, who were both permanently kicked off the platform. Twitter also faces criticism for its continued failure to rein in Holocaust denial, hate speech, Nazi imagery and openly antiSemitic leaders like Louis Farrakhan and former Knights of
Emily Schrader Twitter is ignoring far more dangerous content from Iran, China and about Holocaust denial. the KKK Grand Wizard David Duke. Only after massive uproar did Twitter remove Farrakhan’s notorious tweet comparing Jews to “termites,” and even after that, it did not ban him from the platform. While I find Trump’s looting and shooting tweet absolutely inappropriate and
offensive, I don’t see it as more inappropriate or offensive than other content that Twitter chooses to ignore. Twitter damages its own credibility by ignoring these threats while responding to Trump by placing a warning that his tweet “glorifies violence.” Indeed, Twitter’s efforts have already backfired. On May 29, Trump issued an executive order to prevent online censorship in what was perceived as a direct attack on the network. While the executive order is deeply flawed and likely won’t stand up to legal scrutiny, it’s a serious act of hostility toward the social media site and will certainly rile Trump’s base. While at war with the Trump administration, Twitter is also ignoring far more dangerous content. Iran, which has banned Twitter for its own citizens, routinely uses the platform to incite against Israel and the United States, and has even shared an image
calling for the “Final Solution” — a cartoon in which Iran controls Jerusalem. In recent weeks, Iranian leaders have also been vocal in latching on to the Black Lives Matter movement in an effort to criticize the United States. Twitter has not placed warnings on tweets from Khamenei or other Iranian leaders. Similarly, there’s a well-documented track record of Iran, Turkey, China and Russia using bots and Twitter campaigns to promote pro-regime messages and misinformation. Though these coordinated campaigns are often discovered and the accounts removed, it’s always after the fact. If Twitter has proven incapable of handling statesponsored misinformation, Holocaust denial and rampant anti-Semitism on its platform, what is it dealing with instead? In the past few weeks Twitter, intentionally or not, provoked a fight with Trump by

tlements surrounded by Palestinian land will remain under Israeli governance, Palestinian enclaves will be governed by the Palestinian Authority. If Palestinians were denied human rights, I would be the first to stand up and protest. When people want to drive home a point about Israel they use fear, for fear is always a great accelerant. When President Trump announced that he planned to move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, experts warned us that we’d experience violence in our area. Some panel discussions give the impression that Palestinian terror ended years ago, but Israel now faces existential security threats from all around us every day. Palestinians attempt an average of more than three daily terror attacks. As an American citizen, I receive State Department security alerts. About once a month I receive a warning that there will be violence in the West Bank. I believe the Palestinian people are peaceful and want a high standard of living for their family just as I want for my family. Predictions of a rise in Palestinian violence should Israel go through with annexation are based on a view that Palestinians are incapable of reacting without violence. I don’t think of Palestinians this way and neither should you. There are many legitimate reasons to oppose Israel’s plans to extend sovereignty to the Jewish areas of Judea and Samaria. I completely understand American Jews who oppose Israel’s plans, though I’m a proponent of Israel following the Trump peace plan. American Jews care about Israel’s future and have the right to be concerned. But in forming and expressing their opinions, American Jews have a responsibility to examine the issues in a comprehensive manner and ensure that their concern is both factual and expressed in a nuanced way. To do this, they should start by making sure to include people like me, who live in the areas that the international community is focused on, in the conversation. ■ of truth, opening up the platform to accusations of hypocrisy and selective enforcement? Regardless of how offensive and inappropriate Trump’s rhetoric is, Twitter is giving him more press, more ammunition and more attention by singling him out repeatedly. This is the same method that much of the media adopted prior to the last election, and the result was the people pushing back against an almost obsessive Trump hatred. If Twitter continues on this path, it will have done its part to help President Trump secure a second term. ■

eryl Ain brings readers a fresh view of the 1950s, when Holocaust survivors were resettling into America, when the Rosenberg trial captivated everyone, especially Jews, and school children learned to hide under their desks in atomic bomb drills. In “The Takeaway Men,” Ain presents a New York tale. Set in the Bellerose neighborhood in northwest Queens, the plot centers on the residents of one block on the site of a former potato field, BOOKMARKS with rows of identical brick bungalows on manicured plots now dotted with fruit trees and rosecovered trellises. The street is full of stories, secrets, double lives and complicated identities.

This wise and sensitive work of historical fiction, skillfully weaving fact and fiction, involves a pair of twin sisters, born in a displaced persons camp in the American zone in 1947 Germany, who arrive with their parents in New York Harbor to stay with cousins they don’t know. Their father Aron, who once had hopes of becoming a physician like his own father,
is happy to find work in his cousin’s bakery on Union Turnpike. The girls sometimes wake up to their father’s loud nightmares, even as their mother tries to soothe him. For the family, Bellerose “was as close to paradise as the twins and their parents had ever been — except, of course, when it wasn’t,” Ain writes. The twins, Johanna and Bronka Lubinski, are closely entangled — they are loving, watch each other’s backs and depend on the other. But they react to America and to their past very differently. Johanna embraces America, wants to be popular, is embarrassed by her parents’ accents, while Bronka is the quieter sister, who seems to have inherited their parents’ pain — the “tragedy of her father’s unknowable and unspeakable legacy.” Ain, who grew up in Bellerose, explains that inventing twins helped her to show how people born at the same time, to the same parents, living in the same environment still react very differently to their experiences. She is fascinated with twins, and has a lot of personal experience with them, as her husband, awardwinning Jewish Week staff writer Stewart Ain, is a twin. oy Cohn had the self-assurance of conservative political commentator Ben Shapiro and the pugnacious attitude of his protégée, President Donald Trump. Cohn, right-hand man to Sen. Joseph McCarthy during the Red Scare days of the 1950s, was both a victim and trafCulture View ficker of antiSemitism and homophobia. To borrow President Trump’s phrase, he was a “bad guy.” His own cousins called him the personification of evil. But the new HBO documentary film “Bully. Coward. Victim. The Story of Roy Cohn,” directed by Ivy Meeropol, tries to dig beneath the veneer of coldness and evil. The House Un-American Activities Committee, led by McCarthy, was maligning gay people, contributing to what’s known as the “Lavender Scare.” I cannot imagine what it would have been like to be a closeted person at that time. None of which makes Cohn’s behavior inexcusable, but his internal cognitive dissonance when his own identity was being maligned must have been imaginable. As the film portrays, the attorney was both gay and Jewish, backed against a corner and utterly alone in his predicament. Cohn was all about self-protection, so he may have felt forced to rat out the supposed enemies — traitorous Jews and Eli Reiter’s column appears monthly.

he faced; the contradictions are illuminating. The closeted moral crusading personality who makes life for gay people miserable is a trope that is still existent. It’s easy to be attracted to the salacious elements of his story; he spent time in gay havens like Provincetown, Mass., and the decadent Studio 54 nightclub, and patronized sex workers. He came from a homophobic generation that did not tolerate a gay lifestyle. It’s not clear whether Cohn is more of a tragic figure for being a self-loathing Jew or a selfloathing homosexual. I know that I have the privilege of having been born after these times and have escaped the ire of his prosecutorial decisions and the ideology of the people he supported. I am not gay or black, nor was I a Communist during the HUAC hearings. Perhaps this is why it is easy for me to have sympathy for Cohn. The president distanced himself from his lawyer at the end of Cohn’s life, when he was dying of AIDS; at the time he still insisted to anyone who would listen that he had liver cancer. After his death, the IRS confiscated his fortune. People, of course, are complex, and no one is purely evil or purely good. But my sympathy for the people Cohn hurt and the victims of the political machine he supported and profiteered from should not be outweighed by the sympathy I feel for the attorney himself. We should hold room in our hearts and minds for those who deserve it — the names sewn into the AIDS quilt, where Cohn’s name would eventually land. ■

She weaves the title artfully into the text, first in a letter written by a Polish Jewish woman, recalling her time in the Plaszow forced labor camp in 1942, when her sister’s twin girls saw the Gestapo approaching them, and screamed, “Mama, the takeaway men are coming,” before they were loaded onto a truck with other children, never to be seen again. A decade later, in 1951, a young girl who lives across the street from the Lubinskis in Bellerose witnesses her mother being taken away by FBI agents and arrested “for conspiracy to obstruct justice” in connection with David Greenglass and the Rosenbergs. She asks, “The takeaway men took Mommy away. When is she coming back?” Aron Lubinski recalls the SS as the takeaway men, “who forced them from their homes and then starved, tortured and murdered them.” Ain says that the title reflects what has been going on these days at America’s southern border,

BOOK LAUNCH: ‘THE NEW JEWISH CANON’ “The New Jewish Canon” is both text and textbook of the Jewish intellectual and communal zeitgeist between 1980-2015, offering a conceptual roadmap to our most important ideas and debates of the past two generations. Co-editors Yehuda Kurtzer and Claire Sufrin will celebrate the launch
with children separated from their parents. The phrase goes back to an incident in Ain’s childhood, when she was about 4 years old — a trauma for her at the time, albeit one with a safe ending. She opened the front door of her home to encounter a man she didn’t recognize who looked official, with a black suit and horn-rimmed glasses. Before her parents came to the door, she asked who he was, and he said, “I’m the takeaway man, I’ve come to take you away.” She shrieked and ran into the bathroom. She was too young to recognize that he was a supervisor who had come to pick up their dry cleaning, and was kidding around with her. The moment and the phrase stayed with her. She worked on “The Takeaway Men” for about three years and says, “Sometimes I felt that the book was writing itself and that the characters were leading me.” This is a first novel for Ain, who has published nonfiction books, “The Living Memories Project: Legacies That Last” and the companion book, “My Living Memories Project Journal,” works that encourage tangible ways for readers to keep alive the memories of their loved ones. She has also written many articles and essays, and has had an accomplished career as a history teacher and school administrator on Long Island. ‘22 M I N UTES OF U N CO N D ITI O NAL LOVE’: DAP H N E MERKIN Narrated by Judith Stone, a wife and mother in a time before the #MeToo movement, Daphne Merkin’s new novel, “22 Minutes of Unconditional Love,” l o o k s b a c k o n S t o n e ’s life as a young book editor. The push and pull of her sexual entanglement
ment joined a local book club and began reading a lot of fiction, and was inspired to try writing a novel. Now, she is interested in meeting with as many book clubs as possible, virtually, to discuss the book. The Holocaust has been a lifelong “obsession,” she says, beginning in sixth grade when she read “The Diary of Anne Frank.” She has taught about the Holocaust, spoken with many survivors and their children and has read extensively on the topic. For the novel, she did meticulous research in order to get the history right and to capture the reality for her invented characters. She also includes a glossary of Yiddish, German, Hebrew and Jewish Americana. Some scenes are set in the Kielce pogrom on July 4, 1946, a violent massacre of the town’s Jews by soldiers, police and citizens, in which 42 Jews were killed and many were wounded. Ain’s interest in these events was sparked by the 2016 documentary film, “Bogdan’s Journey,” which she saw when she was thinking about the shape and reach of the novel. Ain reflects on the thread connecting the novel and her previous books, all of which relate to the urgency of memory. “I think it’s important to remember the Holocaust and to remember the survivors. In Kielce, they killed Jews in cold blood a year after the war was over, and no one in the town ‘remembered.’ We have to remember.” ■ with “the one,” the remote Howard Rose, upended her life then and continues to have a hold on her present. “Merkin is at her sly and provocative best” (BookList). Merkin will appear in a Zoom event. — Thursday, July 6, 7-8 p.m. , McNally Jackson Independent Booksellers, mcnallyjackson.com/ event/22-minutes-unconditional-love-daphne-merkin-virtual-event-0.
