The Chairman’s Comments Good afternoon and welcome to Lambeth Grove for today’s NWCFL Premier division fixture against Silsden. It’s been a long few weeks let me tell you, but we put in a performance away to Winsford on Tuesday evening that earnt a 3-3 draw, although we should of probably won the game having been 3-2 up right until the last kick of the game, some 7 1/2 minutes into added time. Result aside (don’t get me wrong, I was very happy with the point), our performance was greatly improved. Not just in our play, but in the overall demeanour of the entire squad. We ‘looked’ like a team again, we were battling for every ball, running for each other and the dressing room felt a far better place to be in. As I’ve said before, this is an exceptionally young squad playing at this level of football. They are learning their trade, this league is not easy. But they are now adding awareness and you can see maturity in their play. They will make mistakes, everyone does, but they have added some steel to their undoubted ability and now ‘look’ like a side. Let’s not get carried away, we’ve a long way to go, but the signs are good so lets remain positive and get behind these young lads again today.

Silsden have made the long drive over this morning, it’s probably our furthest away game but we’re not theirs. That said, it’s still a good 90 minute drive across the Pennines, made more difficult by the never-ending road works. I hope you all found your way here without too much trouble and wish you all a safe journey home. I’m expecting a good, hard fought game today. Silsden currently sit in 14th place. They drew last time out at home to Alsager, 1-1 (having scored an injury time equaliser). I’ve no doubt they’ll be expecting 3pts today, as were Winsford on Tuesday night (A comment made by one of the Winsford committee stated “Bloody hell, we were expecting to give you a good thrashing tonight, I didn’t know you were this good”). So, let’s hope for an incident free enjoyable game of football today and may the best team win! Enjoy the game, Wayne, Chairman

Stockport Sports FC:

Club History Stockport Sports Football Club was established in 1970 as Woodley Athletic, who progressed through the lower pyramid until they became a member of the Northern Premier League Division One in 2004; in 2007, they played in the inaugural season of the Northern Premier League Division One North. The Stockport Sports Village, formerly known as the Lambeth Grove Stadium (at which they play) is one of the few football grounds in England to have a synthetic playing surface.

Woodley Sports won the Manchester League Division One title in 1992. The following year saw Woodley both win the Gilchrist Cup and take the Premier Division Runners-up spot. Work to enclose the ground began in 1996–97, and Woodley’s application to join the North West Counties League was accepted. By this time, the management team of John Imrie and Gary Lowe had been introduced. Both had played at the highest levels for professional and semi-professional clubs such as Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Macclesfield and Runcorn. During the 1997–98 season Woodley set a North West Counties League record, when Peter Carty scored seven goals in a league game against Blackpool Mechanics. Carty was also Woodley’s leading scorer that season, netting 35 goals. Woodley also scored a record 102 league goals that season. During the summer of 1998 Woodley began work on its biggest project to date, the installation of floodlights. The lighted pitch gave the club a boost, enabling it to enter the FA Vase, Cheshire Senior Cup, North Western Trans Floodlit Cup and the FA Cup. The 1999–2000 season saw the club’s first ever FA Cup Match against reigning NCEL champions Ossett Albion, which resulted in a 2–1 victory for the Steelmen. The continued work of the club was rewarded that season when the Steelmen won the Second Division championship on goal difference from Curzon, winning 12 of their last 13 matches and drawing the other, to take its place in the top flight of the North West Counties League. The 2000–01 and 2001–02 seasons saw the club consolidate itself in the top half of the NWCFL First Division, with its reserve team winning a double championship in 2002; it won the Reserve Division title for the second consecutive year and the Reserve Cup. The season finished with work beginning on a new 200-seat stand, which was due to be finished for the 2002–2003 season. The 2003–2004 was Woodley’s greatest to date. It won the Cheshire FA Senior Cup, beating Witton Albion in the final; unfortunately,

- Stockport Sports FC Official Matchday Programme 2014 / 2015 -

that game was better-known for its “streaker incident” than for its being the first time a North West Counties side reached the finals. The FA restructuring of the football pyramid allowed Woodley to gain promotion to the Northern Premier League by finishing fourth in the league. With the Lambeth Grove stadium passed for the Northern Premier League, the Club declared itself a limited company effective 1 August 2004. The 2004–05 season saw Woodley Sports compete in the NPL Division One; it finished 11th and reached the final of the Chairman’s Cup. Off the pitch the club obtained the support of two local businessmen, who have worked with the club on £3.5 million worth of development on the site. Phase one was the installation of a synthetic surface in July 2005, which insured no future postponements and provided an income stream for the club from hiring of the facilities. Future plans included new floodlights, additional seating, covered standing accommodations, new perimeter fencing and new treatment rooms for use by players and spectators. The 2005–06 season saw Woodley finish in their highest NPL position (finishing fourth, gaining an automatic playoff place), only to lose against Gresley Rovers. During that season, they sold striker Liam Dickinson to Stockport County for £2,000. A youth team was introduced; the previous squad moved up to become the reserve team, competing in the Lancashire Lancit League. During the 2008–09 season, the team finished 13th in the Northern Premier League Division One North. Disappointing news was given to Woodley Sports when the administration of Stockport County was announced. Woodley were owed £160,000 from Stockport County for the sale of Liam Dickinson, and this shortfall put the club’s future in doubt. However 18 year old Anthony Sarcevic was sold to Crewe Alexandra

for an undisclosed fee. He came through the ranks of Woodley Sports and manager Trevor MacFarlane gave him the chance of first team football in September. Prior to the start of the 2012–13 season, the club changed its name to Stockport Sports Football Club and began life again in the North West Counties Premier Division having been relegated from the EvoStik NPL due to ‘Ground Grading’ issues. Relegation was due to the development of their Lambeth Grove Stadium by 3rd party landowners, whose sole interest was to profiteer from their underhanded dealings. The football club has had to rebuild on the field of play whilst off the field their board continue to contest the ownership of the stadium amongst other legal issues. Today, Asa Crowe leads his team of entirely Stockport based players, coaching staff and volunteers as they continue their quest to return to the Northern Premier League.

Stockport Sports finally claimed their first point for 7 games in an excellent performance at Cheshire rivals Winsford United.

Winsford took the lead after 18 minutes of play, former Saxons’ player Sam Marshall scoring with a header, against the club with whom he started the season. The Steelmen soon equalised, Sean Tighe placing a 25 yard free kick into the corner of the United goal. Matt Broadhead’s side took a deserved lead going into half-time, winning a penalty which was calmly converted by Derryn Ofori. With the Saxons temporarily reduced to 10 men due to injury, another former Stockport player came back to make his mark, with Will Wareing capitalising on a free-kick, tapping in from close range to equalise for the hosts. The new Saxons’ keeper Will Burns stood out, making two unbelievable saves from pointblank range to keep the Saxons in

the game. Another debutant for Stockport also made their impact, with Dimitri Tuanzebe firing home after being played through on goal and beating the Winsford offside trap. There was a brief stoppage in play, as a small incident on the Winsford substitute bench lead to two substitutes being sent to the stands, much to the frustration of the Winsford management. Despite the Saxons taking a lead into the final minutes of the game, Winsford unfortunately managed to find an equaliser. Liam Baker controlled a long ball from the Winsford defence, before taking the ball over Will Burns to grab an equaliser for United. The game finished 3-3, earning the Saxons their first point in 7 games, in a result & performance which finally shows the steady progress being made by gaffer Matt Broadhead in recent weeks.

saxons - 1 maine road - 3

The Steelmen were unfortunate to taste defeat when they welcomed Maine Road to the Stockport Sports village.

The Saxons dominated the early stages of the game, but Maine Road took the lead against the run of play, scoring with their first attack through a header from Josh Harper. Maine Road scored a second headed goal leading into halftime, making the score 2-0 to the visitors, which was arguably an unfair reflection of the game. The Saxons began to fight back in the second half, Derryn Ofori produced a quality finish to halve Maine Road’s lead. Mayo Ayaji came Saxons, producing save from the goalkeeper with a from 25 yards.

the saxons hot rod:

rodney ajayi

Rodney ‘The Spider’ Ajayi has impressed everyone at Stockport Sports since joining the club in the summer of 2014, swiftly moving through the ranks from promising young player to Captain of the First Team squad.

Ajayi was spotted by The Saxons U21 Manager Chris Culkin, whilst playing for Gorton Community FC in a pre-season fixture and no time was wasted as his signature was secured immediately after the game. Initially starting out at the club in the central defensive position, Ajayi was switched to Central Midfield in the U21’s 8-1 pre-season victory over Mellor Reserves and he has not looked back since, being the stand out player in a midfield that also included established players players at this level in Kiarno Samms and David KubaKuba. The U21’s start to the Cheshire League campaign was mixed, with Skipper Ajayi the stand out performer, leading to Manager Culkin labelling him “...the best

player in the Cheshire U21 League by a considerable distance” and following the departure of Asa Crowe as First Team Manager Ajayi was moved into the First Team squad. Culkin also added “... this is one of the most talented and dedicated young players I have seen, he is certain to move on and play at a much higher level” After a string of impressive Ajayi performances in the engine room of the team, Temporary Manager Culkin handed him the captains armband for the recent Cheshire Cup tie at Congleton Town, before the returning Matt Broadhead singled him out for praise and handed him the captaincy full time ahead of the recent fixture against Maine Road. Rodney has improved by the game since joining the club and is popular with Management, Staff and Players. Everyone at the club is delighted to have him at Stockport Sports and hope that the Supporters appreciate his efforts as much as we all do.

cobbydalers celebration of

rememberance

In March 1914 Silsden Association Football Club won the Keighley and District FA Charity cup before a crowd approaching 2,500. Later that year war was declared against Germany and over six-hundred men, including several of the Cobbydalers’ players, joined the armed forces to fight for their country. In Belgium and France, when they were taking a break from their spells in the trenches, soldiers from the forces began to play football. The Silsden lads, some of whom had won the Keighley Charity cup in their blue and white stripes, set up their own team. Sgt John Baldwin wrote home from the Western Front to the Silsden AFC treasurer, Mr. W. Watson, to see if some football shirts could be sent to the lads in the trenches. The workers and management of Waterloo Mills responded immediately making and sending a set of shirts to the men in the 9th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment.

On Saturday November 8th, one hundred years after the outbreak of the war, the Silsden Football Club held a ceremony of remembrance and celebration. The Ceremony was initially planned to be held in front of the main stand but the weather caused it to be move indoors. The corridors and function room of the clubhouse were decked out in union flags and thoughtprovoking images of the battlefields and Silsden Local History Group had provided displays on all aspects of the War. The guest’s included representatives of the British Legion, local Members of Parliament, Officials of the Local Football Associations and three Ministers of Silsden Churches and also the Head Teacher from Hothfield school, who had been researching all the soldiers who appeared on the Silsden war memorial. Local school boy, Alfie “Moo” Liddle, who was dressed up in shirt, shorts and a flat cap, was selling the “Silsden Herald”, a 1914 style newspaper produced by the Football Club to raise money for the Poppy Appeal.

The lads wore their shirts with pride and took part in friendly games and tournaments and they went on to win a prestigious trophy and were presented with silver medals by the Brigadier General. John Baldwin and two other Silsden footballers, Stanley Wrigglesworth and John Gill were among the many who died on the Somme in 1916. An excerpt from an article on www.SilsdenAFC.co.uk
