ACE PROFESSIONAL AWARD Frankie Gould
The Professional Award is the highest recognition given by the Association for Communication Excellence to one of its members.
Frankie Gould has been the director of communications and public relations at the Louisiana State University AgCenter since 2001. She was promoted to that post after serving as assistant director for three years. Before that, she was a graphic designer, having moved to Louisiana from the University of Nebraska, where she also was a designer. Frankie has received many awards and honors. Her most recent achievement is serving as co-chair of the Cooperative Extension Service centennial celebration. Her ability to make connections across the country helped make this celebration a success. Another achievement at the LSU AgCenter and Cooperative Extension is the annual AgMagic event for Baton Rouge schoolchildren and families. This ag awareness event held in an arena on the LSU campus includes exhibits and activities featuring all aspects of agriculture, including live animals. Frankie works tirelessly to make sure this is a fun event for the children. Because of its success, it has been repeated in Shreveport and New Orleans. Frankie was a member of the original team for impact reporting, and she has maintained her allegiance to this concept. She also has been part of the national team to see that communicators at land-grant universities are part of issues management. She has been involved in issues management trainings at ACE meetings, at a Southern Region Extension Program Leaders Network meeting and during a communications section meeting at the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists. Frankie has always been a supporter of ACE. One of her biggest contributions to ACE was her persistence as ACE president in getting accountability for the management of ACE’s money. Although the transitions to a new management system were rough, it has been at long last achieved – thanks in part to Frankie’s leadership. In addition to serving as president, she was also a regional director, has won many awards through the C&A program and is a regular contributor to ACE annual meetings. She has become an integral part of the annual ACE auction, which helps raise money for the ACE Development Fund. In 2012, she won the Award of Excellence in marketing. 1 | ACE Awards 2014

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE Leadership and Management Ricky Telg Before joining the University of Florida
Department of Agricultural Education and Communication, Ricky Telg worked as a television reporter, newspaper reporter and editor, and video producer for Texas A&M University’s Department of Agricultural Communications. He also taught journalism and broadcast production at Texas A&M. He now is serving as interim associate dean for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. As Journal of Applied Communications editorial board chair 20102014, Ricky truly has led the reinvigoration of Journal of Applied Communications (JAC). He worked with executive editor Dwayne Cartmell and the editorial board to get the journal back on a regular publication schedule with organized submission and review processes. He led reorganization of the board itself and drafted guidelines for responsibilities, term rotations and more. He also led the JAC board through the process of developing a special issue of JAC focused on the ACE centennial. As a result of Ricky’s leadership, JAC is much more organized, is on a regular publication schedule and is getting more submissions than it was just a couple years ago. Telg was instrumental in developing agreements with Gale/Cengage and EBSCO for listing JAC in their research databases. These efforts are huge steps in increasing the overall quality and presence of JAC as a premiere scholarly outlet. In addition, Ricky is faculty adviser for the UF/Agricultural Communicators and Leaders of Tomorrow and served as the faculty adviser for the national ACT organization for five years. His time and talent greatly influence future communicators.

Her newest role is coordinating a new event planning service within EdMedia. She works with UNL and national organizations to assist in planning events, managing the registration system and generating new business through marketing and sales of services. Sandi has received the ACE Pioneer Award and attended the 2008-09 ACE Leadership Institute. She helped present various sessions during the Media Relations Made Easy training in St. Louis. AWARD OF EXCELLENCE Writing Kay Ledbetter Kay Ledbetter is an associate editor/ communications specialist at Texas A&M AgriLife Research. Though Kay demonstrates excellent writing skills, she is involved in many different communications projects in her role with two research stations, 500 miles away from her university’s main campus. Kay is responsible for writing news releases and working with print and electronic media, as well as taking photos; shooting video; providing editing assistance for the AgriLife Communications statewide news team; overseeing websites in Amarillo and Vernon; and producing displays, newsletters, brochures and presentations. Additionally, she helps coordinate and cover field days and meetings, develops specialized marketing efforts as a part of the technical transfer team for various federal initiatives, and conducts media relations training programs to help agents, specialists and researchers understand their role in media relations. As a “one-woman band” communication shop, Kay provides a multitude of services to university clients who rely on her. Several years ago, when Texas A&M AgriLife programs faced serious budget cuts, Kay and her colleagues partnered with the faculty members who rely on their professional services to argue for preserving communications positions. As a result, more communications positions were preserved than originally planned. In these times of tight budgets, that certainly is a success story. Kay has served as chair of the Media Relations and Writing SIGs. She has offered training sessions at national ACE conferences and webinars for the SIG. This year, she is serving on the conference planning committee, reviewing and scheduling breakout proposals for the conference. She received the Media Relations SIG’s Award of Excellence in 2011.
