JAMES P WILMOT CANCER CENTER - Rochester, NY A comprehensive cancer center in Rochester, NY and the flagship of Wilmot Intitute chain of oncology centers. Because the Treatment Center will serve partly as an alternative to this facility, the program, use of space, and treatment options was used as the major precedent in determining program considerations.

Treatment Center Program

MAGGIE’S YORKSHIRE - LEEDS, United Kingdom

MAGGIE’S OXFORD - Oxford, England

The Silos at Elk Creek is a commercial, business, and residential adaptive reuse project in Buffalo, NY which I felt addressed the balance between historic character and modern design quite elegantly. Much of these cues of interior histoic preservation were used in the development of the Vacuum Oil Building.

Wellness Center Program

Maggie’s Centres are a network of drop-in support centers across the United Kingdom that provide specialty advisement, counseling and community for anyone affected by cancer. The founder, Maggie Keswick Jencks, believed in the ability of the built environment to lift a person’s spirits in a way that helped cope with a debilitating diagnosis. In t In this way, each Centre is designed with a uniquely human touch. This precedent is highly successful for its dispersion of natural light, elegant material choice, and dynamic communicating stairs and mezzanines to create a serene yet exiting environment.

The Maggie’s Center in Oxford, England was uniquely designed to mimic the informal pattern of the nature surrounding the building, and was elevated above the site for minimal intervention. The building uses wood structure and interior finishes throughout the building and includes a “Great Room”, which is a program feature that was incorperated into the Wellness Center.

Private Views to Avoid

Brise Soleil (”Sun Breaker”) an architectural feature of a building that reduces heat gain within that building by deflecting sunlight often used as a passive daylighting feature in contemporary architecture. Several variations were studied and 90-degree vertical timber louvers were chosen for the Oculus due to its moderate light deflection, privacy, and maximization of visibility to the exterior.

THE ADIRONDACK REGION (STYLE), NY

ADOLESCENT AND YOUNG ADULT ONCOLOGY - Fort Worth, TX

KRAEMER RADIATION ONCOLOGY CENTER - Anaheim, CA

The Adirondack Region is known for its 46 High Peak Mountains and for its unique vernacular architecture. Often characterized by the use of natural materials such as heavy timber and stone, the style is highly popular for its hospitible aesthetic. Several cues were taken from this style including the use of timber frame structure, Adirondack furniture, and biophilic design of exterior spaces such as the Treatment Patio and Wellness Patio. https://www.adirondackfurniture.com/adirondack-chairs/

https://www.nehomemag.com/adirondack-style/

KHOO TECK PUAT HOSPITAL - Yishun Central, Singapore

The Kraemer Radiation Oncology Center was completed in 2015 by Yazdani Studio, a subsidiary of Cannon Design. The radiation treatment center is unique in that it was designed to feel like a spa by emphasizing natural light, views to nature and calming interior environments. The center is unique for its innovative programming of radiological spaces and considerable biophilic interventions such as the implementation of vertical gardens in the interior of the building (open to above) and the presence of large windows in all treatment rooms such as for CT Simulation (both rare features for Radiation Oncology).

This hospital is a response to the challenge of being a truly “healing-promoting hospital.” The acute care hospital design includes a large open courtyard with extensive biophilic design as well as a nutrition cafe and multiple community roof gardens which are all open to the public; a truly patient-centered design.

Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer (AYA) need a unique place to focus on wellbeing while undergoing cancer treatment. Before this Coalition Unit opened in 2016, there were no treatment facilities designed specifically for this age group (18-29). This Center is designed by HKS Architects to create an interior environment that is less intimidating than the sterile environment of most treatment centers and to provide a socially interactive space where community can flourish for an age group where social interaction is especially vital to development and treatment outlook.
