“Scientific language excludes the emotional-sentimental lexicon” Beniamino Servino, Vacua Forma (2017)
The narrative of Milan as a city of water has never lost its attention since the Navigli closure. Throughout its course, the Darsena thrives on becoming a lively urban space in the city of Milan, even though it has drastically changed its identity within centuries. The Darsena has become a locus to which the collective memory latch itself. It then comes to the writer’s interest in the importance of the Darsena as a place that carries multitudes; memories and emotions. The intervention presented in this thesis seeks a way to bridge the past and the present of the Darsena. In a way for people to discover new meaning in the process of writing and rewriting memory. The blue color symbolizes the newfound identity that offers open-ended possibilities. A dimension that helps make up the very Darsena that is multifaceted, in the gamut of emotion and memory. City of Marrakech represents a mix of cultures where ancient, colonial and modern worlds coexist. At the first glance it is easy to assume that all these worlds have their own defined places in the urban structure: antique is an area of medina with its “untouched” atmosphere, colonial is ville nouvelle, and everything else is modern. However, recent trends in the development has left the city with the presence of underused spaces in-between these unique worlds. For the urban design studio we are focusing on these in-between spaces, specifically the one in Sidi Youssef Ben Ali with its agricultural lands and the Agdal Garden, as well as the capacity of architecture to charge the space around it. We propose an intervention to enhance the potential of the underused in-between space by charging it with productive and recreational activities, reconnecting separated neighborhoods with a living bridge, and creating common ground for the people: a space for all.

Footprints of disused oil storage and processing facilities become an unprecedented opportunity to generate new spaces while witnessing the industrial past of the area, ultimately emerging as a landscape-based legacy of possible post-oil futures. With the canal’s future in mind Openfabric design, developed in collaboration with MVRDV, aims to show the potential of industrial-to-cultural landscape transformations. In addition, the design heavily integrates renewable energy sources to serve as a prime example of the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy. The landscape unfolds as a number of forests typologies, where a continuous tree canopy hosts a highly diverse undergrowth distribution pattern. Wetland, broad-leaved evergreen, bamboo, deciduous and mixed are some of the forests’ typologies displayed in the Oil Refinery Factory Park where programmatic opportunity are generated in newly defined forests’ clearings. Trees distribution is defined as a parametric forest, with criteria such as a species’ contribution to shading the surroundings, food production, or biodiversity algorithmically determining its placement in the park’s forest landscape.

With the concept of modern urban ruin in Kolam park, parametrically-designed, spirally-arrayed curved concrete ribs are used to hold a lightweight roof with a moss texture finish. The structure shall coexist with nature and trees, providing unique semi-outdoor but shaded reading spaces in between the musholla, kiosk, and toilets which are accommodated in the spiral rooms. The building will also be used to host events related to arts and crafts.

Canon Student Development Programme is a bespoke education programme dedicated solely to students with a clear commitment to photography. With a focus on visual storytelling, the initiative provides admitted students from across EMEA with the exclusive opportunity to have their portfolio reviewed by some of the most influential names in the world of photography and receive advice on how to advance their careers. Selected participants are partnered with a professional mentor and attend two sessions of portfolio preparation time, before having their final curated portfolios assessed within an interactive Group Review hosted by an acclaimed expert. At that time, my portfolio was reviewed by Lekgheto Makola, who is the head of Market Photo Workshop and CEO of Javett Art Centre.
