Design Studios: The Design Studio’s at RMIT are the most important of the subjects for each semester. Their purpose is for me to explore and develop my design skills through applying my new skills learnt from other ancillary subjects such as Technology, Communications, and History. I have completed 5 design studios, which cover a range of scaled projects from small, medium and large. This portfolio is a small digest of my design work and also has examples of my work in Technology.


Reciprocity: Semester 2, first year, Design Studio 2 – 2008 Damien Thackray & Anna Johnson This is a Medium Scale design studio which design outcome was a student and homeless accommodation and a river side café. The site is based at ‘The Abbottsford Convent” a former Christian Nunnery which has been abandoned for the last 30 years and under threat from Private Investment Development. It is now a popular and rapidly developing Arts Precinct, which has permanent

and temporary residents such as practicing health professionals, artists, musicians, and actors. It holds many activities such as fresh food and artists markets, a Childrens farm, Art classes, and is also a popular backdrop for independent films. My design proposal and approach was one that was enchanted by the richness of the sight through its history, landscape, urban context and its architectural language. Consciously I designed a building that explored the vernacular gothic architecture existing on the sight, however its placement in the sight was to retain the sights open pastured landscape and remove the architecture by sliding

the building like a draw under the prevailing field slope towards the river. At 1 : 20 scale the building embodies that thick massing of the block walls from the original buildings through the use of cast concrete showcasing the distinctive gothic window shape. This response is also shown through the large pivoting concrete doors, which open the accommodation spaces to the open fields. However, when closed the building changes into a flat seamless concrete wall tucked underneath grass and engulfed by the existing trees; a mere incision in the large open landscape.



Architectural Knowledge: Semester 1, second year, Design Studio 3 – 2009 Louise Wright The Architectural Knowledge Studio is a small scale studio which design outcome was a redevelopment of an existing 1950 brick veneer home in the South Eastern suburb of Melbourne, Box Hill. Throughtout the semester we have completed three different design tasks all entailing the redevelopment of a period home ranging Greeves Street from a Workers 19Fitzroy Cottage, Californian Workers Cottage Bungalow, and finally a post-war Brick Veneer. The Studio’s purpose was to help me learn, apply and adapt a basic set of skills such window and door size and placement, in order to re-create the home space in a better way. It is in this studio that I was first introduced to some beautiful Japanese architecture. My Design Proposal and approach was driven by this introduction to the clarity in simple spatial arrangement and a careful Section a 1 : 100

use of materials. The existing postwar home encompassed a very typical L-shaped floor plan however this L was not addressing anything to the exterior garden. Thus, my overall design gesture was to open the whole back of the house up to the landscape, and in the final design the whole interior at some point has a connection to the surrounding landscape. This is heightened by the whole back extension being made from timber frame construction and double layered polycarbonate to allow natural light into the open plan kitchen, meals, and two adjacent bedrooms. The house is essentially designed to be split in two at any stage, whereby the front of the existing brick house and the translucent polycarbonate section can be separated by bi-fold eco-ply panels. It was also part of the brief to include a separate studio / office and I addressed this with a close relationship to the existing swimming pool and new landscape ponds and native garden. Bigger(and Better) than Bunnings: Semester 2, second year, Design Studio 4 – 2009 Sand Helsel & Fraser Paxton This is classified as a medium to large scale Design Studio, however the final outcome covers all three scales small, medium and large equally. In Australia ‘Bunnings’ is the leading hardware, home ware and garden superstore. Each store is housed in enormous 15,000 – 20,000 m2. This Design Studio is based in the Moolap industrial estate, situated East of the bayside Regional city of Geelong. The Moolap Industrial estate is a precursive

model or alternative to Bunnings. I found that there are systems within this place that can be exploited to better connect some of the parts so that the whole might be more efficient or perhaps better. The Brief was to densify Moolap, with added retail sheds, industry sheds, administration offices, student accommodation and the implementation of a trade school. Moolap is about the shed. Thus, my design proposal for a central hub of my overall scheme entailed four worked up building / building types that all embraced the shed typology. Again, the architectural vernacular of the site sang out as the counterpoint for the architecture. I felt, and still do, that Moolap embodies a sense of history that is embedded within the thin, rusticated

corrugated walls of the existing sheds. I transformed the central storm water canal into a hydroelectric water canal and reservoir that’s purpose is to act as a social glue. The four buildings all have a direct relationship with the water and thus do the users. This stems from the strong relationship with the water that all the Barwon Region embodies. The Lecture Theatre Building is a retro-fit of a half used sand blasting shed that now cantilevers 10 metres over the water. The Retail Shed, Accommodation sheds and Administration Shed are all connected by a recycled train log boardwalk that again cross over the water.

Tokyo 2010: Semester 1, third year, Design Studio 5 - 2010 Christine Phillips & Stasinos Mantzis

This is a large scale design Studio. The brief is to design the 20th Century Fashion Museum on Omotosando Street in Tokyo. The detailed brief is derived from the recent global competition for this particular project. I was lucky enough to travel to Japan on an architectural tour and visit the sight much to the delight of my fellow classmates. The site is a vacant 400m2 corner lot, opposite Herzog and de Meuron’s famous Prada Building. The key point of the brief is that it is to be an icon of Omotesando Street and Tokyo, thus the 100 metre height was established. This studio offered a unique challenge in that it is an international project and also one that is asking for a monumental building in one of the most dense urban environments in the world. It was also unique Studio because the final outcome was completed in partners and

so it was a great pleasure and challenge as the more senior and experienced student to go through the design process and teach and learn with my partner Sarah. The Design concept for the Museum was heavily underpinned by myself and Sarah’s fascination and respect for Japan. Thus, this translated to us researching heavily into the significance of Fashion in Japan during the 20th century and how this then translates to the architectures purpose. Moreover, it was the Avant-Garde pioneers of Miyake, Kawakubo, and Yamamoto that embodied the attitude of sartorial modernity that we were enchanted by when making our design moves. The constant re-appraisal and thirst for change but with a nostalgic view of tradition, the foundation of our design approach was set. Analysing the program brief, we dislocated the typical stacked tower type through plotting the program according to public vs private and stable vs unstable activity. We then used the programmed mass model to plot a single organic line that, in effect, ‘distorts’ the typical extruded square block. Our careful use

of material, implementation of media facades and exposed steel structure all stem from a direct translation to Japanese Fashion in the 20th Century. The Internal spaces are governed by the Tatami mat geometry, however we cheographed the shoji panels and extruded exhibition boxes to give a familiar yet fresh adaptation of the geometry. In fact, overall the building is governed by this geometry from the steel structural grid right down to the shoes and accessory cabinets. The exterior of the building is designed to act as the public face of fashion; the anodized aluminum streck metal façade reflects and changes with the weather conditions eg. Dull and grey on an overcast day and bright white on a sunny day. The media facades are their to promote the spirit of the times through fashion ie. Live feed from the runway, or clothing and exhibition advertisements.
