Message from General Manager

A

s we complete our 11th season in our partnership with The University of Rhode Island, on behalf of Global Spectrum and the staff at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, it’s my privilege to present our Fiscal Year 2013 (FY13) Annual Report. I am very proud of what our team has accomplished over the past year. Relationships within the industry have never been stronger and awareness of our facilities are at an all-time high. In 2012-13, we were able to celebrate our 10th anniversary and show off the multi-purpose functionality of Southern New England’s Premier Multi-Purpose Venue, with more than 250,000 patrons walking through the Ryan Center’s doors this past year to attend a variety of events. These diverse events included: URI Men’s and Women’s Basketball, URI Football, Rhode Island Interscholastic League High School Basketball Championships, Southern Rhode Island Home Show, Providence County Kennel Club Dog Show, NECA All-Star Cheer and Dance Championships, Steubenville East Catholic Youth Conference, University Admission events and High School and URI graduations, including hosting URI’s 127th Commencement exercises, Graduate School and CELS/Arts and Sciences mini-sites. We continued our great partnership with Michael Nolfe and the URI Student Entertainment Committee hosting URI Family Weekend comedian, Wayne Brady, rappers Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar, and welcoming a sell out crowd to Kip Moore, our first country show collaboration with URI SEC. In addition, we also welcomed back Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Bob Dylan, the Piccadilly Circus, electronic dance music (EDM) shows: Life In Color, Steve Aoki and RUSKO, and our first ever nationally televised Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event, Bellator Fighting Championships. 201213 also marked the first opportunities the Ryan Center has served beer and wine to the general public; first with a Rhody Pub for Wayne Brady, Bellator and Kip Moore and then full concession sales for Bob Dylan.

Interest in hockey, skating and our public programs continue to flourish at Boss Ice Arena. The nationally ranked URI Men’s Hockey program celebrated Coach Augustine’s 500th win and URI Women’s Hockey thrived again this past season finishing one of their best seasons, ranked 6th in the country while sitting on top of ACHA Women’s D1 rankings for a week. The Southern Rhode Island Youth Hockey Association is the largest youth hockey program in the state, and five local high school hockey teams continue to experience success here at Boss Ice Arena. In addition, our Learn to Skate program continues to teach skating fundamentals to hundreds of local children and adults annually. Overall, FY13 proved our team’s ability to continue to adapt to the ever-changing event landscape such as bringing URI Commencement inside or dealing with the hurricane and blizzard situations where we were available to assist the University in several different capacities. The variety of events hosted at the Ryan Center allowed us to once again surpass the operating budget for the Ryan Center. These numbers are a direct reflection of the dedicated work from the seventeen (17) full-time staff members and over 200 part-time staff members. We also understand that our success as a venue and company is not possible without the support of our partners and tenants that make up the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. We are proud of our strong relationship with the University of Rhode Island, especially the University President’s Office, Vice President for Finance and Administration office, URI Student Entertainment Committee and URI Athletics and we look forward to building on the success of 2013 in the future.

THE

UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND

Division of Administration and Finance Office of the Vice President Carlotti Administration Building, Kingston, RI 02881 USA

Dear Leah, Please accept my congratulations to you and your team on another successful year of operations for the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena on behalf of the University of Rhode Island, as we celebrated both venues’ 10 Year Anniversaries. I appreciate the time and efforts of the Global Spectrum staff over the last year; especially during the hurricane and blizzard situations we encountered, as well as your assistance with URI’s 127th Commencement exercises. The mission of the Division of Administration and Finance at the University of Rhode Island is to support the academic, research and outreach programs of the University, including fostering inclusion and community as a tool for success. The Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena fall within the Division of Administration and Finance and as such, play an integral part in campus operations and the enhancement of our student experiences. Both facilities are well maintained, and your staff ’s commitment to providing a clean, safe and fan-friendly experience is a great testament to the professional dedication your team exhibits on a daily basis. The multi-use and varied programming of both facilities display the outstanding way of fulfilling the outreach mission through the many concerts, family shows, hockey games and public programs, in addition to being the home of URI’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, and URI men’s and women’s club hockey programs. The quality of these programs and the attention given to the

many campus departments who also utilize the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena are a source of pride to all users. We are appreciative of your continued support to the university, from your steady employment of numerous URI students through internships and part-time positions to the many times you demonstrated flexibility in this complex and diverse environment. Your response to our last minute request to hosting URI’s 127th Commencement exercises at the Ryan Center due to safety concerns for holding it outside, and the assistance you provided to the URI community during the hurricane and blizzard this past winter were truly exemplary. The relationship between the university and Global Spectrum has grown stronger throughout the years, and we look forward to our continued great relationship, as we anticipate continued growth and success of both our venues for the upcoming season. Go Rhody!

Message from URI Athletic Director

THE

UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND Athletics Director of Athletics 3 Keaney Road, Suite 1, Kingston, RI 02881 USA

I am so pleased to again applaud the great work of the Ryan Center management staff. When there are two groups that need to work together as closely as URI Athletics does with the Ryan Center management staff, there can always be challenges and disagreements. I am proud to say that over the previous six years, the relationship between the two entities has grown and become even more cohesive.

The Ryan Center facility is critically important to not only our basketball programs, but all of our sports teams. It is the face of URI Athletics and as a result needs to be kept in top notch condition. Although the building is over ten years old, its presentation is impeccable. That is only going to get better as the building is receiving some upgrades that will make it even more impressive.

About five years ago, athletics partnered with the Ryan Center to hire a Director of Business Development. Daryl Jasper took on that role and increased revenue by three times what we had been bringing in. Although Ryan Center employee, he did an amazing job of representing both groups seamlessly and made for a very successful partnership. That program worked out so well, that we have enhanced the collaboration by outsourcing our corporate sales initiative to Nelligan Sports Marketing.

We are lucky to have such a positive working relationship with Global Spectrum and particularly the Ryan Center Management staff. Leah Becki and her team do a wonderful job or partnering with athletics and helping us overcome challenges that come our way.

The Ryan Center staff also played a critical role in athletic facility enhancements of the Ryan Center. Through using fundraised dollars, we were able to update the men’s basketball locker room into a state of the art facility. Those projects continue under the guidance of Jim Cordero, Director of Facilities for the Ryan Center, and this fall we will be renovating both the men’s and women’s basketball offices.

Thorr Bjorn Director of Athletics

T

he University of Rhode Island Men’s Basketball program started the 2012-13 season by introducing new coach Dan Hurley as the 19th head coach in team history. The program under Hurley’s guidance improved their win total over the previous year’s campaign, highlighted by their second straight win over Atlantic 10 Champion and NCAA tournament participant Saint Louis, and defeating rival Dayton, despite losing Billy Baron, their top scorer from 2011-12 who transferred to play for his father and three (3) highly recruited transfers sitting out. The Rams were lead by transfer Xavier Munford, who finished second in the conference in scoring at 17.4 points per game, becoming the first Ram to score over 17 points per game since Delroy James in 2010-11. Senior Nikolas Malesevic, also earned a place on the conference’s All-Academic team. On February 20th, the Rams hosted the Seventh Annual Pink Out, a breast cancer charity event held in conjunction with the basketball game that night against Xavier. The URI Athletic Department along with the Ryan Center have raised just under $60,000 over the last seven seasons to benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation to help find a cure for breast cancer. The teams outlook for the upcoming year is bright, as three transfers become eligible, and a top recruiting class begins play. In May, the website BleacherReport. com named the Rams a team to watch in 2013-14. Head Coach Cathy Inglese and the URI Women’s Basketball program finished the 2012-2013 season with a record of 6-23, a five win improvement over the

previous year. Their wins include victories over local rivals Bryant and Rhode Island College. The women’s program is looking to the future with eight players for next year having either freshman or sophomore class standing. Despite its first winless season since 1949, URI Football did experience individual successes in 2012. Senior Brandon Johnson-Farrell finished his career with 5,083 all-purpose yards, becoming just the second player in school history to reach the milestone (Cy Butler holds the school record with 5,380 yards). Johnson-Farrell earned Division I FCS AllNew England honors at wide receiver, and was joined on the CAA Football Third-Team All-Conference squad by junior cornerback Jamaal Bess and sophomore linebacker Andrew Bose. Junior quarterback Bob Bentsen established himself as the most accurate passer in school history with a 58.8 career completion percentage, and entering 2013 he needs just 310 passing yards to become the 10th Ram to reach 3,000 career passing yards.

Surveys

Customer satisfaction at the Ryan Center is an extremely important part of Global Spectrum’s operation and in FY 13 the Ryan Center once again used the client satisfaction survey system through Survey Monkey. Following specific events an email is sent to all ticket purchasers with an explanation of the survey and a link to event specific survey. Our customers are asked to rate their experience at the facility in a variety of areas. These areas

include building cleanliness, staff knowledge, concession operations, parking experience, will call experience, and overall impression of the facility. This Spring we sent out surveys for our Kip Moore and Bob Dylan concerts, along with a survey to men’s basketball ticket holders and URI students. Below are the responses of patrons to a few of the questions asked in the surveys.

New Era Tickets

T

he Thomas M. Ryan Center at The University of Rhode Island recently selected New Era Tickets, the solutiondriven subsidiary of Comcast-Spectacor, as their fullservice ticketing company to support ticketing, marketing and fund raising operations for the cutting-edge, multipurpose facility. New Era Tickets officially took the reigns on June 13 from Ticketmaster, who had been the venue’s fullservice ticketing company since prior to the venues opening in 2002. New Era Tickets will provide new conveniences and options for the Ryan Center and URI Athletics, which will immediately enhance every customer’s experience. New Era Tickets’ customized ticketing solution will integrate mobile ticketing, access control management systems, wireless ticketing technology, and fraud prevention for the venue. New Era Tickets’ solution will also more efficiently support the prioritized seating program that The University of Rhode Island uses for allocating seats to donors and season ticket holders.

and client team will support the Ryan Center 24/7, as well as marketing support from Fan One Marketing. Fan One’s solution integrates ticketing data, online behavior, and consumer response with sales and marketing campaigns. These features provide organizations with greater insight into their fan base and allow for deeply segmented and customized communications. The technology provides sports and entertainment organizations with the ability to create automated, rules-based, multi-touch, multi-channel marketing campaigns based on individual consumer actions. As part of the transition away from Ticketmaster, the Ryan Center and URI Athletics has developed a new internal ticketing website and call center that allows URI more flexibility and control. With the marketing support of Fan One and New Era a new email system through Neolane has been developed that will allow the Ryan Center, Boss Ice Arena and URI Athletics a better opportunity for behavior targeted campaigns and automated messaging that will better serve our Cyber Club and season ticket databases.

New Era Tickets provides organizations with more control over their ticketing to increase their operational flexibility and revenue. Through the use of New Era Tickets’ ticketing solution, Paciolan (New Era Tickets’ sister company), the Ryan Center and URI Athletics will gain more control over their ticketing process and branding, flexibility with setting ticketing fees, and ownership of customer data. In addition, New Era Tickets’ highly trained contact center

Testimonials

“From a marketing/business perspective, it is a seamless integration; i.e., you feel like you are coordinating with University staff and for the most part, the public isn’t even aware and just assumes it is a University managed facility. You never get the feeling that it is remotely micromanaged or have to deal with a different person every time an issue comes up. The consistency is a key benefit for us. As an example of how they have helped us in a non-traditional way: during the blizzard we experienced this winter, at the last possible moment, the state backed out of previous understanding to help us operate a shelter when we needed it. Global Spectrum staff, without any training or previous consideration effectively operated as an impromptu shelter while simultaneously managing the regularly scheduled events without any problem. I really feel they will do whatever is necessary for life safety and to assist the community whenever they can.” -Shad Ahmed Emergency Management Coordinator, URI Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security and Director, National Institute for Public Safety Research and Training

“I consider Global Spectrum one of the best, most professional companies I have ever contracted with over my 20 years in business. I believe that our successful partnership has helped to keep these facilities two of the cleanest public buildings in the state of Rhode Island. I look forward to a long lasting relationship with both Global Spectrum and the University.” -Paul Lacasse DKK Enterprises, Inc.

“Under Global Spectrum’s continued management and Leah’s leadership, I truly believe that the Ryan Center will continue to compete as one of the best venues for large-scale events in, not just Rhode Island, but all of New England. It has been great to work with Leah and her staff each and every time (in fact, I wish that every venue we work with was exactly like them).” -Mark Yebin Wang Ask About It Entertainment Inc.

“The attention to detail and professionalism demonstrated by everyone is what makes this ceremony run like a fine tuned machine. Although we have been helping run this ceremony for many years, it is really your knowledge, insight and willingness to make things work that gave the new team confidence! Please know how much we appreciate your time and effort to help make this day a fitting celebration for our graduates, faculty and University.” -Rachel DiCioccio Director of Graduate Student Instructions

“Colleen’s ability to resolve issues, remove obstacles, her attention to detail, and her professionalism are the fundamental reasons why Blackstone Valley has made the Ryan Center our venue of choice for our annual October event. Colleen makes us feel as if we have the largest and most important event at the Ryan Center each year. Quite frankly, that is good for our ego. As a direct result of working with Colleen, Blackstone Valley is looking to enter into a multi-year agreement with the Ryan Center to host our event there for the foreseeable future.”

Testimonials

“Most recently, Cat Country had the pleasure of co-hosting a Family Skate with the Boss Ice Arena during the winter 2012 holiday vacation week. This event offered families across the state an opportunity to enjoy an afternoon of public skate at the beautiful Boss Ice Arena facility--all for the cost of two cans of non-perishable food items which were donated to the RI Community Food Bank. More than 500 children of all ages, and another hundred or so parents and guardians participated in the great event! Without the support of Matt and the staff of the Boss Ice Arena and Global Spectrum this event would not have been as successful. It has become an annual event for us; one Cat Country and the Boss Ice Arena enjoys offering. This one event highlights the strength of our relationship. We value and appreciate Global Spectrum as a long term community partner, and are pleased to have the staff as part of our extended Cat Country family.” -Carolyn Montanari Cat Country

“Over the past year I have had the great pleasure of working with the Ryan Center twice. I have to say that out of the 75 venues I work with every year, the Ryan Center is the most accommodating. This is a first class team and I look forward to the opportunity to work with them in the future. I wish all the venues I work with were as dedicated to creating an all around great experience as the Ryan Center. To Leah and her team I say thank you. Mr. Weygand, I say your lucky to have this first class team managing a great venue!” -Zach Samson Life In Color

“As always, the Ryan Center and staff provided the RIIL an opportunity to give our student athletes an absolute first class experience during our high school basketball championships. The professionalism of everyone associated with our event is always evident and they all go above and beyond to insure that every detail is covered. We are thrilled with the relationship that the RIIL and the Ryan Center has built over the years and look forward to continuing to work together to make our future events even better.” -Michael P. Lunney Rhode Island Interscholastic League

“I feel that the Global Spectrum team has not only increased my desire and comfort level to operate and host such a technically intricate event at the Ryan Center, but has displayed the highest level of customer service in the most genuine and personable manner I have ever experienced in the production//live entertainment industry. Without Global Spectrum being a part of my team during this truly blessed and powerful event, I do not think we would have been as successful as we have over the past 3 years. It has been an honor and pleasure to get to know Jim and his staff, they are honestly the main reason for me recommending the Ryan Center as the venue to host this amazing event year after year. There are many other arenas that could handle a production such as mine, but they are lacking one key component...Global Spectrum and for that reason just won’t work for my events.” -Brett St. Gelais - Steubenville East Youth Conference

Capital Improvements

A

s we complete our 10th season as the facility management company of the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, we are extremely proud of the capital projects we have collaborated with the University on to provide maintenance and improvements to the state-of-the-art venues on URI’s campus. Since 2005, Global Spectrum’s staff at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena has facilitated over $2.1 million worth of capital improvements including over $1.4 million worth of projects that have either been completed or will be completed this season. Some of the larger capital projects include:

• Upgrading to the latest standards for improved operation and reliability • Qualification for “Total Maintenance” or “All Inclusive Maintenance” contract on old equipment at costs similar to new equipment.

Venue Lighting Arena Bowl Lighting Control System: The decision to replace the previous lighting controls system was done for several reasons. The previous model was an aging system that reached its life expectancy and had began malfunctioning; causing light to turn off and on at will. It had also become increasingly challenging to get replacement parts to repair. The implementation of the new Payne Sparkman controls, provided us cutting edge technology, while giving us the ability to control each light fixture individually and thus more flexibility. In addition, it gave us the ability to turn lights on/off on-site or even remotely, as well as putting in place schedules thus reducing energy usage.

Roof Repairs: Working with architect Brewster Thornton Group and Apollo Roofing over several phases, we have been able to eliminate many high visibility leaks in both buildings that have lingered over time. There are also plans to continue on in full force to close out the remainder of the leaks this summer. In addition to the specific roof repairs, new gutters, down spouts and snow guards have been installed at the Boss Arena to replace the items that were severely damaged by recent winter storms.

• Lobby/Concourse Lighting: When changing the lighting over the lobby and concourse areas, it became apparent that we need to increase the amount of light in those areas. When tested, the previous lighting in the lobbies came in at 7-9 foot candles. After the new fixtures were installed, the readings came back between 60-80 foot candles, an increase of over 600%. Not only were we able to drastically increase lighting, but also strategically reduce energy by 60%! Along with both of these major accomplishments, we also were able to use an appealing fixture that fit in with the overall design of the venue.

Pg. 27

After performing these overhauls, several items were fixed that were able to save us from costly repairs and being out of commission during peak season. Additionally, the units were tuned up and thoroughly cleaned enhancing efficiency by about 20%, thus further saving on utilities.

• Arena LED Lighting: This is the final recommended lighting project that will drastically improve the atmosphere and gameday/event abilities when it comes to lighting. Chiller Units Overhaul: In 2013 a major overhaul was performed on the two Trane chillers that provide cooling for the Arena at the Ryan Center. The benefits of a major overhaul can be substantially greater than the cost. They include: • Longer equipment life • Reduced downtime and business interruptions

Capital Improvements

Basketball Court: In collaboration with the athletics department, when looking at the rebranding of the school logo at center court, we found it to be an opportune time to invest in a new basketball court. An alternative option; sanding down the logos and repainting the existing court would have further reduced the life of the of the court and leaving the University with little to no value remaining on the court. With the decision to invest in a new court, we were able to gain a court with full life cycle, new designs and in the process recover some of the original investment by selling the old court back to the manufacturer. In addition, we are able to complete this process while

not being without a court for summer camps or practices; which would normally be the case for annual screen and coats. This past season, Global Spectrum also collaborated with athletics department on the recently completed renovation of the Men’s Basketball Locker Room and Ryan Center North Pad projects. Men’s Basketball Locker Room: With the hiring of new Coach Dan Hurley, a new vision of the team locker room emerged. A place for the players to lounge that will provide a highly useful recruiting tool. The athletic department utilized the

Ryan Center’s Operations Department to research, negotiate and hire an architect and subcontractors to perform the work. As part of this project management, the management staff was able to manage the project under budget and successfully accomplished the goals and visions of the head coach.

Going Global Spectrum recognizes the increasing importance of managing venues that are “green”, or environmentally friendly, and is committed to reducing the use of natural resources and the amount of waste that results from various events and activities that take place at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. These efforts are part of a corporate initiative called the Global Spectrum “STEP UP” program, which is a program designed to enhance our corporate image and distinguish us as a socially and environmentally responsible organization.

Green

Cost Containment

Global Spectrum has a proven track record of aggressively controlling energy costs. Through LIKARR we have installed the FastDraw system at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, which cuts costs by using exact dilution control levels and reduces excessive use of water when compared to manually diluting products. This system also reduces the venues’ carbon footprint by decreasing chemical and plastic in the waste stream. Through Gexpro Lighting we have installed new energy efficient concourse lighting in the Ryan Center, reducing power usage from 400 watts (16,000 hours burn) to 116 watts (40,000 hours burn). This increases the life span of the lamps by 50%, while decreasing the energy output by 40%. Global Spectrum is also in the process of upgrading the lights inside the arena by providing new state-of-the-art LED lighting fixtures. The project will decrease the watts from 1100 watts to 635 watts, saving the University approximately three million dollars ($3,000,000) in acquisition and total costs over a fifteen year span.

Recycling Efforts

We have placed recycling bins for glass, plastic and aluminum cans in front of all concession stands, around the concourse and in the office areas of the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena.

At the Ryan Center and Boss Ice arena we are committed to achieving maximum sustainable operations in our facilities and reducing the use of natural resources and the amount of waste that results from various events and activities that take place throughout the year. Working with our vendor partner, LIKARR Maintenance Systems, one of the regions largest and fastest growing companies in the Facility Supply Distribution Industry, the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena utilizes the latest technologies in equipment, chemical management systems and best practices to provide a GREENER, cleaner and healthier environment for our staff, clients and patrons including replacing cleaning supplies with more environmentally friendly products. We also utilize environmentally safe chemicals for our water treatment through Rhode Island’s Bardon’s Water Services and Technologies.

Pg. 29

Where appropriate, through our partnership with Waste Management, Global Spectrum uses a single-stream recycling program in which paper, glass, plastic and aluminum cans are placed in one bin instead of being separated by material. These bins are placed throughout the building, including offices, kitchens and concessions. Through Global Spectrum’s relationship with Waste Management, the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena environmental efforts have produced the following annual savings: • 141,912 kWhrs of electricity (enough to power 12 homes for a full year) • 3,120 gallons of oil (enough energy to heat and cool 12 homes for a full year) • 744 gallons of gasoline (enough gasoline to drive 20,736 miles) • 420 mature trees (enough to produce 5,167,980 sheets of newspaper) • 215,976 gallons of water (enough to meet the fresh water needs of 960 people for a year) • 132 cubic yards of landfill airspace (enough airspace to meet the disposal needs of a community of 1,968 people

Future Outlook

T

he Global Spectrum staff at the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena are excited to have completed our 10 Year Anniversary as partners of The University of Rhode Island and look forward to the start of the 2013-14 Fiscal Year. Building on the accomplishments from this past season and the past ten years overall, the staff continues to work diligently in bringing diverse events and programs to both the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena, while emphasizing customer service through the “How You Doin’?” program. Because of the work we have done up to now, next year promises to be a great one. The men’s basketball team is poised for an exciting season under Coach Dan Hurley and his staff with a talented group of transfers eligible to play this season. The women’s basketball team returns a solid core of veterans under Coach Inglese’s leadership that saw the program increase their win total by 5 games from the 2011-12 season. We will continue to build off the progress we have made offering opportunities to enjoy beer and wine at certain events, developing new relationships as well as maintaining our current great relationships with promoters. In addition we will continue to seek opportunities for The University of Rhode Island and Global Spectrum to enter into strategic financial ventures while bringing new events and initiatives to the Ryan Center and Boss Ice Arena. We hope to see you during the 2013-14 season which is already off to a strong start with; great shows, exciting basketball opponents and an array of community events. We look forward to sharing with you another ten (10) years of fun! Don’t miss out this year!
