ABOUT ME
I am currently a fifth year student at the University of Kansas School of Architecture. Architecture is and has been an influential part of my life, and is the reason I am pursuing a career in architecture. As inspiring as it is to me, I hope to spark curiosity for others through design and immersion. I strive to push the boundaries of architecture through emerging techonologies and allow people to approach architecture in a unique way.

KAW RIVER HUT
KAW RIVER HUT Lecompton, Kansas | David Sain | Spring 2020
The project is asking for a hut which lies on the sandbar at the edge of a riparian vegetation by the Kansas River near Lecompton, Kansas. There, kayakers and paddlers will reserve the hut to unwind for the night. This overnight station is located midway of the 173 miles paddling path, and provides sufficient space for four kayakers who bring their gear to sleep, cook, and dock their kayak safely. The Kansas River, also known as the Kaw, is the largest prairie watershed in the world. The Kaw runs more than 170 miles through Kansas to meet with the Missouri River where it provides drinking water for 800,000 people. Friends of the Kaw (FOK) is the only grassroots conservation group that serves the Kaw. For more than twenty years, FOK is dedicated to protect the river from pollution sources including municipal and industrial wastewater discharges.

KAW RIVER HUT Overview
OVERVIEW The site is located on the sandbar where the project will be built at the edge of the channel where the soil type is expected to be typical clay with a sandy mix found in the Kansas River flood plain. Situated in the ground are concrete spread footings, 36 inches below grade for the raised Kaw River Hut to be held 12 feet above ground. This is to create a flood resistant structure for situations where the Kaw can flood the shoreline and allow debris to flow through freely. Within the site, the structure will stand at the median of the sandbar’s width and orientated 45 degrees off north/south to maximize views of the river.

SITE Located on 1502 Walnut St., the proposed design creates an anchor of social interaction that brings the entire district together, acting as a liaison amongst all of the giants around which it sits. Not only does it tie the proposed Transform KC District together, but as well ties the existing Power and
Light and Crossroads districts together with one big blow, ultimately binding Kansas City into a cohesive district . PRECEDENT The case studied, prior to developing the site, begins with Millenium Park District in Chicago, Illinois where its features accomodate to its visitors
with plenty of attractions, activites, and sights all-year round. Especially looking at the McCormick Tribune Plaza where the Cloud Gate and the Chicago Skyline became the inspiration for the destination site in downtown Kansas City.

That’s the way everyday goes Every time we have no control If the sky is pink and white If the ground is black and yellow It’s the same way you showed me Nod my head, don’t close my eyes Half way on a slow move It’s the same way you showed me If you could fly then you’d feel south Up north’s getting cold soon The way it is, we’re on land So I’m someone to hold true Keep you cool in this good life Won’t let you down when it’s all ruined

ACOUSTICS The focus for this project is to provide a realistic sensory virtual experience. Using the latest development for light rendering with Nvidia’s latest graphic processing units, the same methods were used to render audio for the virtual environment. Similar to light rendering, path-tracing/raytracing methods were used to provide realistic acoustics for audio in the virtual environment. Audio path-tracing can determine the kind of materials and surfaces to provide a proper sound to the user’s hearing. Within this environment, the user can experience the most dynamic sensory experience virtual reality has to offer.

DesignBuild | Terra-Mura
DESIGNBUILD | TERRA-MURA Lawrence, KS | Keith VanDeReit | Spring 2021
Terra-Mura is a terracotta installation on the University of Kansas’s Interdisciplinary Ceramics Research Center (ICRC) that studies the thermal aspects of the terracotta tiles in addition to benefit local wildlife. The installation’s design expresses the tesselated voronoi pattern that seen in nature on a macro and micro scale. Connecting the pattern to serve as a bird nest and a bee habitat while manipulating solar radiation showcases the plasticity of the clay covering both the eastern and southern facade of the ICRC building. From tile design to development and installation, the Terra-Mura is an ongoing project that serves nature and its spectators passing by on Bob Billings Parkway.

STUDY Located on 2303 Bob Billings Pkwy, the Interdisciplinary Ceramic Research Center (ICRC) sits along a tree edge where undisturbed wildlife ranging from birds, insects, and reptiles make an ecosystem on site. Inspired by the properties of terracotta clay that is composed of nature’s outgrowth, the studio observed nature on all scales and ways in which clay could give back to nature. Our study finds that on both the macro and micro scale, the voronoi structure is a organic pattern that can be tessalted and is found in every organism assisting us to model growth and its spatial relationship to the ICRC building. South Facade Process Precedent Photos
PROCESS As a team of six, each pair took charge in each phase of the project; the design and development, aluminum fabrication, clay press and casting techniques, documentation and installation. Throughout the entirety of the project, the phases went into three different workspaces that had specialties to make the project possible. Being on-site at ICRC made it possible for us to examine the previous semester’s work and the environment where they took inspiration from as well as being familiar with the RAM press and kiln. At this stage, knowing the limits of the tools will help determine the challenges to our process and make calculations that will help predict the dimensions of the tiles.
SYNTHESIS The biomimetic approach to our studies allowed the installation to grow in an organic way. The approach compared to previous semester’s is less rectilinear and follows the slope of the roof’s edge and curve around the corner onto the South facade. The large gesture of this approach allowed the voronoi pattern to have a “sprawling” effect to the tile’s design and tesselated organization. Additionally, emerging from the terracotta are the wood boxes that serve as habitats for the local birds and bees of Lawrence. The hybrid materials of wood and terracotta promoted our design intent to connect the building to nature’s edge, giving back to nature.
The next stage taking place at East Hills facility is where fabrication of wood for the habitats, and aluminum for the structural attachment of the tiles. With the leftover aluminum material from the previous semester, it was a challenge to maximize its use for efficiency and cost-reduction. East Hills became a space to learn new tools and understand prefabrication to make the installation seamless at the next phase. Meanwhile, creating a process to create consistent tiles from the CNC to the RAM press then to the kiln was a matter of patience and fine-tuning steps to reduce time and defects. Lastly, the installation stage brought each of us to communicate together to involve all disciplines of the processes to really understand realtime decisions and fixes to make the Terra-Mura possible. UNIDAD | The Loop
Introduction
UNIDAD | THE LOOP Armourdale, KS | Shannon Criss | Fall 2021
Surrounded by railyards on 3 sides and the Kansas River to the south, Armoudale is isolated within industrial lands that has faced a history of floods leaving its community disinvested, neglected, and isolated. Armoudale’s challenges varying in complexity and immediacy, such as traffic safety, street, sidewalk, and lighting conditions could be revitalized through basic needs to make Armourdale an attractive and self-sufficient city. The Loop is a master plan that implements sustainable concepts along Osage Avenue bringing forth complete walkable streets, affordable mixed-use housing, greenspaces and gardens, day & night community activities which overall bring a healthy and economic impact to the environment and Armoudale. UNIDAD being one of the mixed-use buildings which celebrates the beautiful existing local to attract artists to inhibit creativity and exhibit art and Armourdale’s art.

CONTEXT Armourdale’s urban analysis shows that within the core of residential land use, Osage Avenue cuts through the sparse variety of building types that do not provide meet the community’s basic needs. The Loop puts vacant lots to use bringing forth five mixed-use buildings that revitalize activity and growth along Osage Avenue. Connectintg the greenspaces that sit behind each lot to activate alleyways that unify the ‘loop’, a safer and healthier way to explore the core of Armourdale. UNIDAD pays homage to one of many existing murals along Osage to cultivate the art culture of artists inside and outside of Armourdale. Putting forth a building with civic spaces on the first level and residential for the upper levels.

UNIDAD Featuring a 2000 sq.ft. gallery that doubles as a flex space to hold large gatherings on one side and multiple collaboration spaces for all scales of work, these spaces adapt for pedagogy and creativity for anyone. Meanwhile it emphasizes its direct connection from the formal front of Osage Avenue into the informal greenspace behind the building for the public wayfinding. Authentically taking inspiration from its neighboring building (mansard roofs) to shape its form. Its goal to be a marker within Armourdale

to allow anyone can create and take in inspiration from existing local murals and to display art. In doing so, residential spaces incorporate a sustainable practice of passively upkeeping the landscape by conserving and recycling water to irrigate it back into the greenroof and sprawling vines that are featured around UNIDAD.
