Spirit of the Shore

Hear the call of the wild at a couple’s retreat in Trappe.

Vol. 5, No. 4 2014 17

Annapol i s HOME Anne Arundel | Eastern Shore

Publishers’ Letter Waterfront homes require a design of their own and we share with you two exceptionally conceived homes—one classic, the other modern. While these photos show the water as pristine and perfect, waterfront living on the Bay is dynamic, with the land and water always changing and even threatened. It is a great privilege to live on the Bay, and it comes with a special responsibility to ensure that our waters are clean and respected. Everyone has an interest in protecting our waters because people from all walks of life enjoy fishing, boating, and swimming in the Magothy, Severn, South River and so forth. In Anne Arundel County, this great responsibility is too often forfeited, especially when one learns about repeated massive sewage overflows on the Miles, Cyprus, and other creeks and rivers in the Annapolis area. This has to stop and we all need to contact those responsible— the Anne Arundel County Executive and all county leaders—to take action now rather than later. While we champion private enterprise and individual responsibility, there are certain things only government can readdress and one of those is sewage management. We care about promoting and revealing the secrets, creativity, and treasures of this special place. Along with a Madonna Garden designed by McHale Landscape, we are delighted to share with you our own discovery of Jan Kirsh’s sculpture planted happily at her home on the Eastern Shore. While relaxing on the Bay or ocean this summer, we hope you will enjoy reading this issue of Annapolis Home! Until next time,

If you don’t know Jeff Koons, you should because he is one of the most successful American artists of all time. He is loved and hated by art critics, while his art appears in the major museums and private collections throughout the world. Although his art seems straightforward enough—Hoover vacuum cleaners stored in Plexiglas containers, with florescent lights—it is more complex than it initially appears. He wryly monumentalizes the sentiments, fascinations, and oddities of mass culture and everyday people. His retrospective exhibition in New York is definitely worth seeing and you have a chance to do so through October 19 at the Whitney Museum of American Art. For more information, visit www.whitney.org.

2

You still have time to visit Wolf Trap, an outdoor performing art venue in Vienna, Virginia. Summer performances include Lionel Richie, Sarah McLachlan, Pink Floyd, and Yo-Yo Ma. For the full schedule, see www.wolftrap.org.

Robert Haywood, Ph.D., studied art and architectural history at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is the Vice President of the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.

3

More locally, if you like live music, whether rock, country, or jazz, Rams Head on Stage is the place to go in Annapolis. For the lineup of performances planned for this summer, visit www. ramsheadonstage.com.

4

As far as actual art goes, most outdoor art festivals are a big disappointment because the most accomplished and innovative artists are rarely a part of them; Baltimore’s Artscape is no exception. Still, Artscape is fun if you like hanging out with a large crowd in a fair-like atmosphere, while enjoying food, live music, dance, and everything else. This year Artscape is held from Friday, July 18 through Sunday, July 20 in Baltimore. For information, go to www.artscape.org.

Spiritof the Shore By Kymberly Taylor | Photography by David Burroughs

Vol. 5, No. 4 2014 23

T

To outsiders, the Eastern Shore reveals itself slowly. Some miss it entirely. Far too often, the uneducated zoom by on their way to the ocean, trying to avoid police lurking at Dairy Queen with radar guns. Most folks who live on the Shore are fine with that. They exude the air of knowing things you don’t: where the soft crabs nestle, how to stock a freezer full of wild fowl, the simple pleasure of a pause. Phil and Marlene Feldman possess such knowledge. Phil was born and raised in Cambridge, Maryland, and has spent his entire life fishing and hunting, aware of where the sun rises on the horizon, the solstices, which influence the tides, which, in turn, affect your fishing plans. You would not know this, but beneath his business suit is a man in constant touch with water. (For proof, see the Tide app on his phone.)

24

Annapolis Home

A graduate of the University of Maryland, he now owns several commercial insurance companies located on the East and West Coasts. He and his wife Marlene have been married thirty-seven years, many of them spent raising children in a much-loved waterfront home in Cambridge. When they bought twenty acres, most of it farmland, on the Choptank River, they wanted to build an equally special house, where they could deepen their connections to each other and to nature. After interviewing several architects, they chose Scarlett Breeding of Alt Breeding Schwarz Architects in Annapolis. “Scarlett wanted to hear what we wanted, and didn’t impose any ideas on us,” says Marlene. “That was important to us.” Mindful listening is integral to Breeding’s design process. Before rendering a single drawing, she poses a simple question to her clients: What and where were your happiest memories, what shapes and forms accompanied them?

Its long form responds to its linear site along the shoreline and its traditional floor plan guided by the couple’s lifestyle and reverence for the natural world.

Vol. 5, No. 4 2014 25

The dining room can be viewed upon entering the home and helps create a “center experience. It has light furniture so one can see right through the room to the water.

Then, she travels to the places they have lived in and loved and, in this way, begins to divine what is in their soul and what images make them happy. With this powerful knowledge, she incorporates into the new space familiar, beloved forms. “I look very hard for the soul of the person and I try to express that soul in the finished product,” Breeding says. “That makes people happy, because that is what they were looking for in the first place.” What helped her most is that the Feldmans knew themselves, and knew what they liked. Marlene wanted a home with character and complexity, conducive to entertaining, able to center an ever-growing family. “Phil grew up hunting, fishing, guided by the spirit of the Eastern Shore,” notes Breeding. To succeed, she knew she must conceive architecture grounded and true, yet supple enough to mediate this wild, sparkling force. With this in mind, she designed a variation of a classic Shingle-style home tucked between a fifteen-acre cornfield and the river. Its pure lines recall the Shingle style yet also reference the Eastern Shore’s vernacular architecture, with a multi-faceted roofline composed of both gables and gambrels. These traditional forms reference the evolution of the Shore’s vibrant

agricultural industry, filled with working farms, barns, and sprawling homes that rise from irrigated fields to stand alone against the sky. Marlene walked Breeding through her former home and pointed out her favorite spot: a seating area just off the kitchen. A version of this appears in the new house. Marlene also furnished her new home with items from her Cambridge residence, cherishing their connectivity to her former life. The beds in the guest room are from the previous house, and the bed in the master faces a wall of windows overlooking the water, as it did before. There are family antiques and objects that look well-loved, such as the freshly polished round dining room table, with a custom built-in lazy susan for self-serving, and, upstairs, the wooden deck chairs weathered to the color of strongly-brewed tea. During her deliberations, Breeding had to make concessions or rather, make way for the cornfield. This meant eliminating a staple of the classic prestigious Shore home: a long, treelined drive leading straight to the front door. This would not do for Phil, who did not want a driveway interfering with his field. “He drew an imaginary line and said, ‘well that is about as much as we are going to be able to use for the house, the rest I want to keep in crops,’” says Breeding. Her team had to figure out a new “sequence of arrival.” This sequence is important because it influences the way one first experiences a house. “We now had to arrive at the end of the house as opposed to arriving at the center of the house,” Breeding recalls. To foster a similar, if smaller drama, she designed a long curving drive that follows the edge of the forest, approaches the back side of the house, and defers to the field.

Every room reveals views of the river or field. These opposing primal elements seem to charge the air—as if nature is planning a take-over. “There’s a lot going on in this field. I know this sounds crazy but you can almost see the corn growing at this time of year,” says Phil. “It’s just amazing how it changes from day to day. Osprey feed in the field, dove feed in the field, the great blue heron comes in. Marlene and I watch it and talk about it all the time.” The field and waterfront, the entire twenty acres, are mesmerizing. Perhaps it has to do with the disheveled charm of the duck blind, just a few yards from the beach, commandeered by an osprey. Or, that you can gaze for miles and see nothing but a single line dividing the wheat from the corn. It is easy to see why some never leave the Shore, why some hesitate to cross the Bridge. They have been drawn into its invisible biologies, its vast uninhibited unconscious that flows just beneath the surface of the rivers and fields, in search of souls. AH

This towering home’s form is derived, in part, from the exceptionally narrow lot it sits upon, described by the architect as “the size of a double-wide trailer.”

34

Annapolis Home

When Architect Mark McInturff set out to design his own weekend house on the Eastern Shore, he faced a host of problems. If good architects do nothing else, they solve problems. And McInturff is a very good architect. He founded his Bethesda firm McInturff Architects over thirty years ago and has always maintained his devotion to Modernism. When you are an architect designing your own house, you have the freedom to do as you wish without having to meet someone else’s list of “must haves.” As a modernist, you can build a house that can make a strong statement about your own design beliefs. But that does not mean you will not face challenges and constraints and have to solve some problems along the way. So what were the problems that McInturff had to solve? The first was his instant infatuation with a sliver of land in Neavitt, Maryland. He locked eyes with a view across an uncrowded cove and that was that. Like so many of us who yield to our infatuations, seemingly oblivious to the problems that might lie ahead, he dove right in. There were the challenges of getting building permits from a county government that was reluctant to see anything built on this small lot. In the end the shadow of an old foundation was unearthed and permits were granted to build on the original footprint. Unfortunately the footprint was, in McInturff’s words, “the size of a double-wide trailer.” There would be no permits issued to add a deck or screened porch or even a swimming pool; all were considered to be “structures,” and all structures needed to fit within that “double-wide” space.

This modern three-story home in Neavitt, Maryland, and its minimal kitchen decor, are examples of architect Mies van der Rohe’s famous phrase “less is more.”

While these bureaucratic issues were the kinds of problems that architects routinely solve, they are, of course, not what captivates our interest. But they are important because they set the stage for the interplay of design challenges and architectural solutions that can raise our pulses, particularly when they are solved by an architect with a mature vision and an active imagination. As McInturff thought about the demands of building on such a small footprint, he had what he called his “aha moment” about the house. He would build up by “stacking boxes on the house” to add much needed interior space for bedrooms, baths, and a home office. The front façade became vertical, almost a mini skyscraper. It steps up three floors and is capped by a flagpole that punctuates a center line, adding balance and order to the asymmetrical façade. The design of the home has its roots in the modernist movement in architecture that arose in 1930s Europe. A basic tenet was the oft-

repeated phrase from architect Mies van der Rohe that “less is more.” This is design that stripped away ornamentation to purposefully break with overly decorated older styles. At its best it still inspires building with an almost crystalline purity. It is about form and proportion and the way that we relate to and use space. And though it may look simple, it is not. It would be almost wrong to go further and not tell you about the pool. It is on the roof, three stories in the air. McInturff, who is trim and fit, looks like a man whose swimming obsession might cause him to believe that it is rational to put a pool on his roof. You can imagine him rising at dawn, ascending through his beautiful white rooms, up the stairs to the roof deck and dutifully doing his laps. Until he tells you, “I don’t really like to swim.” What he likes is being in water. The pool is a combination decompression chamber and baptismal font. If you swim to the end, and pull your head above water, you

Vol. 5, No. 4 2014 37

have found the perfect place to drink a beer while you look across the cove at a perfect view of blue water and green shore and a waterman’s boat that McInturff will happily tell you has always returned to that exact position on that dock. And you then understand that he had solved another problem, building his pool in a perfectly rational place. In the end McInturff, with the help of staff architect Christopher Boyd, squeezed in a modest 1662 square feet over three floors, but the interior, with its pure white walls, white oak floors, and walls of glass facing the water, feels much larger. It is finished with the precision of a fine boat. There is no wasted space. Everything is crisp, elegant, and refined. It is no surprise that McInturff would build himself a Modern house. What is surprising is that this Modern gem was built on the Eastern Shore in a small town, on the end of a peninsula, sitting on the side of a quiet road where it makes a bold statement to those few who pass by, that after eighty years Modernism still has profound things to say about the beauty of good design and the joy of a well solved problem. AH

Above: This home’s lot was not big enough to accommodate a pool, so the architect found a solution: situating it on the rooftop. Right: The small study appears larger than it is, because of its oversized window.

The Mary Garden A Study of Strength & Simplicity By Kymberly Taylor • Photography by Geoffrey Hodgdon

The rosary’s history remains controversial. Rosarium translates into “rose garden.” During the Middle Ages, garden was a common word for a collection of similar things. Priests and monks would say fifty Hail Mary’s and add psalms and prayers, using the beads to count them. Today, these prayers have evolved into the Apostles’ Creed, the Our Father, Hail Mary, and the Doxology (“Glory Be”). The statues of the Blessed Mother and Pietà came from China and are made from white marble, each weighing over 5,000 pounds. The statue of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton was custom-made from white marble from a composite of pictures McHale arranged and sent to sculptors in China. Gatsby’s Collection in Easton provided assistance with the project. Shingles are arranged to repel water but also allow wood to breathe and cure properly. The Crucifix was donated by Fichtner Roofing.

Rosary, from the Latin rosarium, means “garden of roses.” According to legend, in an apparition, Mary, the Mother of Jesus, said that each bead on the rosary is a rose, and, when someone completes a rosary, they are giving her a crown of roses. The rosary is used to recite many prayers, including the powerful Catholic prayer, the Hail Mary. Through this prayer, one may ask the Blessed Mother to speak directly to Jesus for them. It is believed that because he cannot refuse his Mother, the request may be granted. The physical rosary is also an object, a nonverbal narrative that begins with the cross Jesus was crucified upon. And, that is how this garden begins, with a cross made of light Travertine marble, which is the same material used to build the Basilica in Rome, explains Steve McHale, owner of McHale Landscape Company. This garden is composed not just in the form of a rosary, it is a rosary, one that you may walk with your feet or travel with your eyes. Instead of beads, there is a circle of carved flagstones, with Mary herself in the center. McHale conceived and created the garden last year as a gift to his sons’ school, Archbishop Spalding High School, where it is used by students, bereavement groups, and anyone seeking quiet time to reflect. Archbishop Spalding president Kathleen K. Mahar commends McHale and the many donors involved in the ambitious project, which was blessed last September by Archbishop of Baltimore William E. Lori. This garden is unusual in that it is propelled by the rhythms of prayer and experienced by the rhythms of walking. As one walks the rosary, one follows Mary’s journey: the birth, life, death, and resurrection of her son. These words also define a garden’s seasons and our own: there is life, new growth, blossomings, and endings. Like the rosary, this garden’s simplicity contains greater depths. When one says a formal rosary, one meditates on the four sacred mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous. The garden is planted in quadrants named for each mystery; plantings complement each mystery’s symbolic color.

McHale composed this intimate garden with great attention to detail. The Pietà, the Blessed Mother, and Mother Seaton, an educator and first Saint from America and Maryland, are statuary referencing Catholic history. The Pietà is especially important and meant to lend strength to those in mourning: it is near a memorial wall engraved with the names of students and alumni who have passed. There is a chapel made from rough-cut lumber for small gatherings to meditate or celebrate Mass. The altar is fashioned from a huge slab of stone. McHale notes that creating in a small space can actually be a very good thing. “It is not too big, can’t get too busy. I have to keep it simple, and good design is simple.” McHale used strong materials on a large scale— rock, marble, wood, and stone—to drive the design. He explains that the landscape should support and complement and is intentionally quiet. “There are only five types of plantings but about three hundred of them,” he says. “I am using them to create a sense of mass; the idea is to compliment not to compete, there’s enough going on between the statues, and that’s where the focus needs to be—with the altar and chapel.” It takes an artistic sensibility, discipline, and confidence to keep things minimal. This simplicity is appropriate, as Jesus was, after all, the son of a carpenter, born in a barn. This garden has to be experienced physically to fully appreciate it. The enduring marble, which will whiten with age, the polished Travertine, rough stone, and plain unadorned wood encourage a kind of receptivity. There is enough solid matter to provide shelter and encourage intimacy yet plenty of free space, which a spirit must have to approach you, should you feel the need to connect and request assistance. Visitors are welcome to visit the Mary Garden, though permission is required. For more information, go to www.archbishopspalding.org. Summer office hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Offices are closed on Friday. AH

GROWING ART

Jan Kirsh is a sculptor and landscape designer who lives on the Eastern Shore. Her work as an artist and gardener comes together in a series of sculptures she created based on the form of the asparagus. As if to ensure the asparagus are experienced as art, she explains that she dressed the spears with knives and forks to add texture and prompt “eye-catching shadows and highlights as the angle of the sun changes throughout the day. First created in 2004, these brightly colored and expressive spears have a stately and whimsical character that turn a garden into a magical place.

The Peggy Stewart House By Robert Haywood • Photography by Michele Sheiko

The Peggy Stewart House in downtown Annapolis is a home of historical and architectural distinction. A National Historic Landmark, this Georgian style residence was built for Thomas Rutland between 1761 and 1764 and is one of the key monuments that has made Annapolis a major destination of colonial history. The house earned its name from Anthony Stewart, an Annapolis merchant who purchased the home in 1772. As punishment for breaking the boycott on British tea imports, he was forced in 1774 to burn his cargo ship Peggy Stewart. The event became known as the “Annapolis Tea Party.” A later owner of the house, Thomas Stone, was a planter and one of Maryland’s delegates at the 1776 Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. With three levels, high ceilings, five bedrooms, an office, and sitting rooms, the Peggy Stewart House has all the elegance associated with the finest historical architecture. The home has undergone changes over the years, including a major alteration in 1894, when the gable roof was replaced by the present hip roof.

64

For all its illustrious history, the Peggy Stewart House is a private residence suitable for modern living and entertaining, and includes many updates such as a remodeled kitchen. Plus the home has something few of its neighbors possess—garage space for eight cars. A home of this rarity requires a resident sensitive to its rich history and architectural importance. As broker Georgie Berkinshaw says, the Peggy Stewart House is “an incredible property looking for an appreciative steward for the next decade.” Listing Price: $2,555,000 For more information on the Peggy Stewart House, see www.cr.nps.gov. Inspired Design at BLACKWALL HITCH 66

Annapolis Home

By Christine Fillat Photos courtesy of Blackwall Hitch

Straight Up on Dining Out There is a natural flow from the city dock in Annapolis across the bridge into Eastport and to the chrome-yellow doors of Blackwall Hitch, Annapolis’s newest restaurant. Its owners’ names are familiar to locals: Anne Arundel Councilman Derek Fink, restaurateur James King, Larry Ray of Big Vanilla Athletic Club, and State Delegate Steve Schuh (also contender for Anne Arundel County Executive). All are also partners in Greene Turtle restaurants. This is their foray into dining that is a bit more upscale. What they’ve created is a series of highly designed spaces: chic, yet comfortable, elegant, and homey.

There is stateliness to the exterior, with a broad expanse of windows, the better to let natural light in. “We used as many new windows with transoms as we could get in there to light the space,” states architect Leo Wilson of Hammond Wilson Architects. A double volume entry leads to the main dining room and pub. A substantial open-tread steel stairway pilots you to an intimate roof deck with views of Spa Creek, sailboats, and downtown Annapolis. Larry Ray’s building expertise extended to the fine details of the construction finishes such as the steel corners on the columns and the execution of shelving units.

The main dining room brings to mind a garden party, with lights strung from the ceiling, and an open floor plan, where there is a clear view across the room to all the tables. The original brick walls are painted a glossy white. “The walls are art in itself,” states designer Bobbi Nock, “we love the clean line of the painted brick.” The restaurant has an edgy nautical theme, “more urban chic with a historic twist,” as Tammy Ray, design partner, puts it. Together with Nock, the two spent a year gathering decorative artifacts and furnishings at barn sales and antique shops in Frederick, Baltimore, and locally in Annapolis. There are steamer trunks, heavy ropes, and blue sea glass stocked away in corners and on shelves. Portholes and paintings of sailing ships adorn the walls. The other prevalent theme is England, as in Jolly Old, with vintage signage and leather pub seating. The front door is yellow, “the Queen’s preferred color,” says Nock. “There is a pop of yellow in each room.” A communal dining table, which they have coined the “King’s Table,” stands at bar-height in front of the raw bar. The most remarkable aspect of Blackwall Hitch is the lighting. It seems to require a category all its own: glittery and feminine, and distinct in each separate room. It makes the restaurant celebratory.

68

Annapolis Home

While the restaurant itself is beautiful, the food needs tweaking to be superlative. At a recent meal, the dishes fell short of expectations. While a crab cocktail was crisp and tasty, the clams’ casino was rubbery and flavorless. The shrimp and grits, a chef ’s specialty, were faultless. The crab cake lacked the lumps of crabmeat one expects. (I have found that for a crab cake to be truly delicious, it needs to be handled delicately. If it is stirred with a heavy hand, the lumps of crab break apart and create mush.) The rockfish, another chef ’s selection, was salty and offtasting. Desserts failed to please: the brownie seemed ordinary, the strawberry shortcake made with a pound cake that brought to mind a grocery store variety. As of this writing, however, a new chef, Gianni Leopardi, is at the helm, brought on to bring the expansive menu under control. The best part of this new restaurant and bar is that it is a fabulous place to gather with friends, and it stays open later than other local bars and restaurants. One hopes, given the test of time, that the food rises to the high standards of the architecture and décor.

Christine Fillat lives on the Magothy River and is an aficionado of Chesapeake Bay cooking and living.

The Scene

Girls Night Out at the Paca House Photography by Mia Cranford

On June 18, flower power rocketed to new heights during the 6th annual Paca Girlfriends’ Flower Power Party at the William Paca House. Judy Hermann and her team at Historic Annapolis Foundation conceived this grass roots event five years ago, to encourage new generations of women to support this colonial-era legacy. The word has spread and this year, the event sold out in just 10 hours, to make this the hottest Garden Party in town. 1. Girlfriends sipped Pacatinis in the shadow of 18th-century style boxwood and sampled wares from local vendors. 2. Guests roamed manicured garden lanes and explored the Summer House 3. A group of guests enjoying their time.

Getaway: Jade Mountain, St. Lucia Jade Mountain is a premier resort in St. Lucia designed purposely so that guests have limited access to technology and can instead enjoy this retreat with incredible views of the sea and Piton Mountains. Architect Nick Troubetzkoy says that he aimed to transform the “traditional daunting hotel corridor” by creating a long suspended sky bridge leading to a private sanctuary that is “yours and yours alone.” He describes the design as “a cornucopia of organic architecture” using indigenous materials such as massive rough-hewn slabs of tropical hardwood for the entry doors.
