reatness eatness came to those willing to put in the time every week. “We practice for 12 hours a week. It is so we can get better than we were the previous year,” senior Courtney Spry said. After all that practice, knowing the routine was easy. Controlling nerves at State was not so easy. “Performing at Lucas Oil Stadium was so new. I was so nervous, but my friends were all around me. I was a little disappointed we placed second,” junior Rachel Bauer said. Memories were not only made on the field. “When we went to band camp, no one ever went to the bathroom alone; even at restaurants, everyone had at least two people with them. Half the guard would be in there sometimes,” Bauer said. Being on a team was a lot of work, but being a leader for the team was even harder. “When you’re a captain, you get a lot of people mad at you, but you get over it. You have to have great leadership skills and understanding for what everyone else is going through,” Spry said. By Tyler Hensley & Kaitlyn Spalding

or senior Brittany Sheedy, a rare threestaff experience and major multi-tasking produced confusion with great return. Sheedy served on the broadcast, newspaper and yearbook staffs in an effort to pack as much journalism experience into her final year of high school. She wanted to prepare for college journalism demands. “It’s fun but stressful because I sometimes have three deadlines on the same day; that rarely happens, though,” Sheedy said. “It’s also good preparation for college. I meet a lot of different people, and I’m proud seeing the things I’ve done.” Certain section deadlines caused more stress than others. A national convention filled with brainstorming led to a revamped yearbook and a hectic color deadline. “It’s always hard with Student Life be-

cause it’s due first, and it was backed up when we changed the theme at the convention in St. Louis,” senior Kori Steer, yearbook staff member, said. Along with the stress, sneak peeks came after pages were sent to the printer. “Getting proofs back is cool because we see what we’ve done so far,” senior Shelby Harting, yearbook staff member, said. While yearbook and newspaper handled deadlines every few weeks, students on the Woodman AM broadcast team faced daily deadlines along with segment deadlines every two weeks. “Broadcast has the most stressful deadlines because there is a limited amount of equipment so it’s hard with 20 other people who also need to meet the same deadline,” Sheedy said. mpact. Peer Mentors, Service Learning and Best Buddies impacted the school and community in inspiring ways. The Service Learning team often visited a local assisted living home, Greenwood Village South, to befriend residents. “At GVS, a lot of the students are touched by the residents. They tell them their stories and their childhoods,” said senior Ashley Bartley. “There’s a man there named Neil; he’s an artist like me. He’s actually given me sketchbooks and pencils to try and help my artistic career along. He actually gave me some of his sketches, and I still keep them in the sketchbook he gave me.” Peer Mentors reached out to kids who shared the hallways with them. “My favorite part about Peer is after you’ve been meeting with your buddies for a while you walk in and they light up and look up in the classroom when they see you and
jump up. You can really see the impact you’ve had on them,” said senior Griffith Kearns. Hard work led to positive results. “I had a buddy last year and this year. He used to get in a bunch of fights and stuff and cause trouble. He didn’t do any of his homework. After this year, he’s been calmer, and he always does his homework. Now, he’s on the A/B honor roll. At the beginning of this year, he just started trying. He told me I was one of the ones that inspired him to work harder,” said Kearns. Peer not only benefited the mentored but the mentors as well. “I want to teach my kids that there’s a lot you can do to help somebody out. I’ll always remember that Peer is the class where I learned that it’s the little things in people’s lives that make a change and make them better,” said Kearns. By Sam Richardson
