THE PEEL The City of Portland was developed based on three main pillars: transportation, industry, and fabrication. The primary concept for the proposed building is based on the plaiting technique whereby the basket makers split bamboo stalks, peeling away each individual peace one stroke at a time. The overall building form mimics the fabrication process of the Japanese Contemporary Basket while staying true to the main development pillars one which Portland was founded.

STRUCTURAL DESIGN Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is a developing country. The economy is currently stimulated by development and government funded projects. Working in the construction and design industry in KL, there are opportunities to design various types of buildings. The primary types of buildings are mixed developments consisting of: commercial, office, residential, etc. During my career in KL, much of my design efforts were focused on high rise buildings ranging from 40-80 floors.

Transfer Beam: distributes load from floors above to larger columns below. Normally shear walls are above transfer level with conventional columns below, however with the large spans required for the office, PT beam and slab are adopted.

NOVUM TOWER B

Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Usage: Offices + Commercial Floor No: 80 Notable Design: Outriggers fitted At 3rds of building vertical to Control overall displacement and drift during lateral wind load analysis.

Location: Petaling Jaya, Malaysia Usage: Residential + Commercial Floor No: 40 Notable Design: Four (4) towers arranged in a 90 degree radial organization. Wind Analysis performed on each individual building making each design unique in terms of lateral loads.

Location: Bangsar, Malaysia Usage: Residential + Commercial Floor No: 35 Notable Design: The residential units were atypical. At certain levels, load bearing walls terminate. Therefore transfer structures were required to disperse loads.

CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT As consultants, we are tasked with bringing the imagined building to its physical manifestation. However, the consultant is not the only one accredited with bringing the building to life, but the joint efforts between the client, consulting team, and contractor. Provided the manpower, machinery, and methodology is all in order and all parties are willing to coordinate, communicate and compromise the success of the project is almost certain. Regardless of the scale and duration of the project, all buildings have a similar process from start to finish. With the same consulting team as the main building (Lumi) the lowest bidder was chosen during the tender process. The contractor was capable of completing the works, but many compromises were had during construction. Looking back at the construction of the Lumi Sales Gallery many lessons were learned, mostly with construciton administration documents, contracts, and critical path. The take away message for my team (within the C&S consultants) was to improve on the overall understanding of the process from start to finish. In hindsight advice to the builders, on the process of construction, could have benefitted them to complete the project at an earlier date.

LUMI SALES GALLERY Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Usage: Commercial Floor No: 1 Notable Design: the sales gallery consisted of 150 foot spanned trusses and 30 foot high reinforced concrete feature wall.

BROADSIDE POETRY During the summer of 2016, my brother and I collaborated on over two dozen broadsides. The underlying theme of the collection was based in Japan (primarily during the Hiroshima Bombing). My brother, Reid, wrote the poetry while I executed the art in response.
