lumen³

Concept: The Lumen³ is a modular design that adapts and functions at the intersection of sustainability and socially-distanced community. The Lumen³ is a self-sustaining structure that uses the sun's energy to illuminate the scrim-covered frame and lighting elements. This dynamic concept can be configured into limitless arrangements: parklets, pop-up kiosks, exhibitions, and entertainment— all drawing the community back to retail as a beacon of light.

Technology: Lumen³ marries the ancient technologies of the past with the cutting edge. Rammed earth modules combine with modern steel frames and LED projection and lighting technology. Photovoltaics store the energy during the day to power it at night.

Sustainability: The Lumen³ is a case study in sustainability. The primary building material comes from the earth, compacted and formed into benches and wall systems. The black steel frame can be re-melted and reformed, making this concept a cradle-to-cradle design.

Phototropism: We have a biological response to light: it draws us closer, giving us comfort and safety. The diffuse under-seat lighting grazes the rammed earth, revealing its construction that connects us to the environment. The LED projections create dynamic experiences for retailers to create experiences that draw us back out to our communities. This Lumen³ becomes a lantern and beacon for the community.

Exposure and Enclosure: Community is at the core of Lumen³ and is explored through this idea of 'exposure and enclosure.' The modular system can be configured in parklets, malls, and outdoor plazas. The enclosure borrows inspiration from theater, with its scrim fabric appearing opaque when a light source shines on it and translucent from the opposing side. The scrim creates diffuse lighting for those enclosed inside the Lumen³ and solid massing for those viewing outside - creating flexibility and choice when it comes to an individual's comfort levels.

REDESIGN BC ID DEPARTMENT

We were tasked with re-imagining the Bellevue College Interior Design building. I decided on the concept of ‘Nest’ - a spatial and emotional journey that fosters a profound sense of belonging and growth.

At the heart of my vision lies the ‘Nesting’ lecture hall, with catwalks leading to a co-working space overlooking the lecture space. As the plan shifts at a dynamic angle, a symphony of nested flex-pods and nooks emerges, encouraging spontaneous interactions, fostering connections, and nurturing a vibrant sense of community.

‘Nest’ is a design narrative that fosters connections, and transforms a college campus into an extraordinary sanctuary of growth and potential.

I created work/live artists lofts, centered around a community space and connected to the community sculpture garden that activates the alleyway. This design creates a center of cultural activity, with spaces for artists to create, teach and live in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood.

Intimacy Gradient

JUSTICE CENTER

Design a social justice center for Bellevue College Students and the surrounding community. Create equitable community space with universal design and sustainability principles.

warm to cool neutrals

Design

The color palette I’ve chosen is based on a misty sunset/sunrise over water. The feeling and balance of warmth and cool creates a space that feels welcoming and open to all. This palette represents my concept of the ‘intimacy gradient’ spatially and emotionally

This center features a layered design based on my concept of the intimacy gradient’. As people move through the space, they will go from highly public and energetic spaces, to quiet and peaceful spaces. The center utilizes multiple types of seating for different abilities, acoustic panels, carpet and a muted color palette for those with sensory issues.

The intimacy gradient was coined by author Christopher Alexander in 1977 (Alexander). This idea of a sequence of public to private spaces is something I’d like to explore for my social justice center. This sequence of spaces are important to the psychology of behavior, but also connect to Universal Design, Disability Justice, Historical Precedent and the Third Place.

LGBT+ CULTURAL CENTER

Step into a world of transformation and acceptance at the LGBT+ Cultural Center, where the concept of ‘Metamorphosis’ comes alive. This design celebrates the journey of the LGBTQ+ community, symbolizing resilience, growth, and beauty emerging from within.

Grand Atrium, Awe-Inspiring and Inclusive: Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a grand atrium that serves as the beating heart of the center. Suspended from the ceiling are captivating felt acoustic panels, representing the interconnectedness of the community. The atrium is a space for congregation, connection, and empowerment, with a grand staircase leading up to the galleries and mezzanine.

Enchanting Mezzanine: Encircling the perimeter of the atrium is a mezzanine that pays homage to LGBTQ+ luminaries and their indelible contributions to society. Their stories adorn the walls, inspiring visitors with tales of courage, resilience, and the power of embracing one’s true self. The lounge overlooks the grand atrium, creating a quiet nook for conversation and reflection.

Transitional Youth Housing: Embedded within the center is a beacon of hope - transitional youth housing. Providing a safe haven for LGBTQ+ youth facing adversity, this sanctuary nurtures personal growth and empowerment, ensuring that young lives are uplifted and transformed.

A Metamorphic Oasis - Atriums of Light and Greenery: Throughout the space, atriums puncture the old building, inviting streams of natural light and verdant greenery into the interior. Symbolic of transformation and renewal, these oases represent the ongoing journey of the community, illustrating how beauty and growth can flourish even in the face of adversity. As the center evolves, so do its spaces, serving as a testament to the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community.

MID CENTURY RETREAT

FULL HOME RENOVATION

I was honored to design this client’s midcentury home, lovingly named the “Vashon Bird Bath.” Collaborating closely with our clients, we embarked on a thoughtful remodel, infusing each space with elements inspired by their deep admiration for birds and their natural surroundings.

Sustainability

Our clients’ dedication to sustainability mirrored our own, making this shared vision a powerful driving force throughout the project. We celebrated the harmony between nature and design by meticulously selecting natural materials, low VOC paints, and eco-friendly finishes, we ensured that each element reflects our dedication to sustainable design.

In the kitchen, we embraced the principles of sustainability by reusing existing appliances and upgrading to a more energy-efficient convection stove. A conscious decision to specify Dekton and quartz counter tops further reinforced our commitment to eco-friendly choices without compromising on timeless elegance and durability.

In the living area, we took a step further by replacing the aging wood stove with a more efficient model, promoting cleaner combustion and a more sustainable source of warmth

Additionally, all existing cabinets and removed appliances were donated to Second Use at our firm’s expense. All images provided courtesy of Waldron Designs, LLC.

A Mid-Century Bathroom Oasis:

The project began with an outdated bathroom that lacked the charm and allure of the midcentury aesthetic cherished by the homeowners. Drawing inspiration from their passion for birds, we conceptualized the “Vashon Bird Bath,” a unique sanctuary that harmonizes with the beauty of nature and mid-century modern design.

Elevating the Shower Experience

Aiming for a spa-like ambiance, we installed a graceful valence, allowing gentle wall washing that creates a calming atmosphere. The striking combination of brass and black tiles, coupled with pebble flooring, pays homage to the natural environment while celebrating the essence of mid-century design.

KITCHEN & LIVING

We were honored to be asked to design this client’s kitchen while their bathroom and entry were under construction.

The client’s wanted to update and open up their kitchen, creating connection between the two spaces.

We utilized a harmonious color palette, and connected the kitchen to the entry and bathroom through use of Douglas Fir, Walnut and stone aggregate counter-tops.
