editor’s note “If you don’t claim your humanity, you will become a statistic”. As ambiguous as it seems, Chuck Palahniuk may be right- we must not just exist, we have to live; and comes with living is a responsibility that the universe had burdened us; etched in our being just like how the original sin is planted in ourselves from the day we were born- the responsibility to do good to the world. This burden, a social responsibility often taken for granted by the free-spirited youth, becomes a problem when they forget about it completely and start living for themselves and begin to strive for nothing but selfgratification. This is where all the stereotyping takes place- the youth we see today as the good, the bad, and the ugly. The tragic reality of this generation is that its ironic disposition between humour and philosophy are often the cause of rift within the society. Do or say something with the slightest hint of shade, and you’ll see sectors going bonkers and they will start peeling their bananas. The proactivity that the youth brings to this world are often foreshadowed by the aforementioned rift and thus, the perception of the older generation towards the youth will be a by-product of filtered conclusions and agenda setting. Nevertheless, no matter how poorly the society thinks of the youth, they can’t and will never be stopped bringing innovation and new idealisms to fulfil their responsibility for living. The youth is the future, and safe to say they are the now.

누드를 보내다. K-Drama has ruled the Philippines by storm; causing the Filipino millennials to be influenced by it rapidly like a fire would eat a leaf. It has become addictive that some people made it as a part of their way of life. With the tons of vogue and good Korean dramas that South Korean producers had offered like: Descendants of the Sun, W: Two Worlds, Legend of the Blue Sea, Goblin, Weightlifting Fairy: Kim Bok Joo, etc – it has been a burdensome to get over it, and most people rejected a cure for this K-Drama addictiveness. Here are the symptoms that one is hit by the K-Drama apocalypse:

“K-Drama has ruled the Philippines by storm; causing the Filipino millennials to be influenced by it rapidly like a fire would eat a leaf.” 1. He or she sets high standards to their ideal man or woman. How can a young guy or lady not dream of having a girlfriend/ boyfriend who is funny, sweet, loving, caring, possessive, and will do everything to their loved one? Basically K-Dramas present guys and ladies who are almost perfect making one wish to have one.

3. He or she starts adapting Korean terms. Annyeonghaseyo, Kamsahamnida, Saranghaeyo, Ottoke, Oppa, Ahjumma, etc. are just some of the terms he/she always utters after watching a K-Drama. He/she even communicate and start calling someone in Korean even though the one he/she is talking to do not understand it.

2. He or she values finishing an episode more than their sleep. K-Drama comes first before anything else! And every night he or she struggles with the one-lastepisode mantra and do not even bother for having eye bags for the lack of adequate sleep.

4. He or she craves for Korean food and beverages. Koreans in K-Dramas eat a lot which made the viewers have the urge to try what the Korean actors are eating. Sometimes the K-Drama fanatic prefers eating ramyun or Korean Bbq than his/her usual food.

5. He or she wants to travel to South Korea After watching a K-Drama, he/she suddenly feels the urge of wanting to travel South Korea and explore the places that Korean actors had been into their dramas. Then imagines that he/she is part of it, as well. 6. His or her phone is his/her life saver. He/she watches K-Drama anytime and anywhere. He/she either watches while in class or in a public transportation because he/she does not want to miss a single episode, and he/she even downloads the dramas’ OST in his/her playlist.

#BODY GOALS BY NIÑO DWIGHT LIGAN

Muscle gains, curves, better bods; well, some people train to look good, others train to keep fit. Most people are conscious about one’s impression about their body. Some do yoga, Zumba, others rely on the internet but the best way to achieve these #bodygoals, is to do CrossFit training. CrossFit is an effective way to get fit. Anyone can do it. It is a fitness program that combines a wide variety of functional movements into a timed or scored workout. Pull-ups, squats, push-ups, weightlifting, gymnastics, running, rowing, and a host of other movements are just a part of the program. CrossFit training doesn’t only give you your desired body figure, it also makes you healthier. Many athletes do CrossFit training to improve their strength and muscle endurance. Just like the respected Muay Thai Coach of the Mactan Combat Sports, Kru Niño Rio Saoy, he believes that the stronger muscles that you establish, the bigger the edge that you will have against your enemy. “To have a good endurance and muscle strength is a must have most especially if you’re into contact sports, otherwise your opponents will outlast you. You have to cooperate with your trainer to achieve your desired goals”, Kru Rio stated. Kru Rio does his CrossFit training in SciFitness Gym which happens to be a sister gym of

17 the Mactan Combat Sports club where Kru Rio is also teaching. CrossFit training could also be utilized as a form of conditioning for track and field athletes as this involves stamina and cardio workouts. A 2x gold medalist in 100-meter dash in CDU Olympics, Arnold “Akkey” Rosales openly said that it’s totally different if you do CrossFit training for conditioning compared to traditional tied-with-wheels training. “CrossFit training is undoubtedly a more efficient conditioning method for my sport compared to the traditional practices. The traditional practices build your calves up and all those muscles in your legs which is good. CrossFit training also improves your cardio which is even better.” Akkey asserted. He also added that it’s really better to have a professional trainer in doing your CrossFit program to achieve the results that you really want. CrossFit training is an opportunity looking in for you while your body is still capable and achieve your #bodygoals. But in achieving this goal, people need to work hard, be committed and be dedicated which is very rare in this generation but its tested and proven, CrossFit training hits two birds with one stone, you could be healthy and even look hot.

SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT BY MARJORY ENRIQUEZ

oung people are the backbone of the country, molders of dreams, makers of reality, yet highly stereotyped people in the society. They have been called ungrateful, disrespectful, narcissistic, trouble makers and sometimes even dubbed as the black sheep of the community. The perception of the adults to younger people or the youth changes from generation to generation, comparing themselves to the people younger than them - claiming that the youth are getting worse. The stereotypes may have an impact on how everyone will view the youth but this will never define who they are. The youth are more than

just what older people think they are, although there are really bad people in the group but that does not give them the privilege to judge everyone. Besides, one bad person does not represent the whole group. Like a coin, the youth has two opposite sides – while the other side screams “I trolled someone in social media” or “I fought with someone along the road,” the other side whispers “I aced my class” or “I fought for women’s rights.” The people may never know, but that person who fought with someone can be the same person who fought for women’s rights. Some tend to forget that the youth they called as the black sheep have built huge businesses which help boost the economy. There are also these young people joining international contests – bringing pride and honor to our country. Others are breaking sports records, winning Nobel prizes and developing new machines for the progress of our nation. It’s the same young people whom adults called trouble makers and lazy ones changed the lives of many. The youth may have been subject to prejudice but they still have ideals and positive qualities. They may have been reckless at times but they turn dreams into reality. As the famous line of Jose Rizal goes - the youth is the hope of our nation.

COPY-PASTE GENERATION BY RYAN KARL TALLO

eing born in the 21st century means growing up with the instant generation, the accessibility of Wikipedia, Google, etc.—basically generally the internet. Formulating a quirky idea is as difficult as searching for a needle in a gigantic haystack of an enormous farm, during a pitch-black night. With effort alone, the needle would only be found after spending a lifetime searching; but if paired with inventiveness and prudence, the work will be easier and faster. Ideas that became part of human life are taught in school, researched in the internet, and copy-pasted to printed assignments of 21st century learners. Not all millennials share

“Ideas that became part of human life are taught in school, researched in the internet, and copied and pasted to printed assignments of 21st century learners.”

the same objective, some prefer to copy and paste and remain to be mediocre. That’s why being branded as the ‘Copy-Paste Generation’ is of no surprise. It surely is hard to formulate fresh fantastic ideas, but belonging to a generation of idealistic individuals makes one strive harder to achieve what is believed to be unachievable—breaking the extremes, and exceeding the limits. On the other hand, it is obvious that not all people care for what they can contribute to the society. For people who do not care, these advancement privileges are nothing to them but mere innovations that make their lives easier. Concepts that have been contributed by renowned personas are mere ‘utility and leisure’ to their oblivious eyes. The artworks of Vincent Van Gogh, just mere paintings, but are among the igniters and strong influencers of art advancement. The transmission of electrical power wirelessly by Nikola Tesla, just mere discovery, but without it, wireless technology has yet been discovered. Art and Science. The things that sustain life and the things that we are alive for. Copying and Pasting for sake of compliance is not a problem. But when not credited properly, it will surely put one in trouble. Millennials, no matter how paradoxical they may seem, will bring nothing to the world but innovation. These people are game-changers to the world of science, arts, politics, religion, social activism, rights advocacies, etc. with the aide of new technology and the internet. It may seem that all essentials to life have been discovered, but as the fast-paced world spins, a new idea promulgates. All stories may have been covered, but not all angles had. Being born in the 21st century doesn’t automatically make one a slave of technology for it is made for the utility of humans and not the other way around. Odds and ends sprout, but only the most significant remains for the next generation to upgrade. The youth of today may have a hard time formulating new ideas of their own, but their innovation of the things that are already existent makes them a unique generation. Generations stand uniquely on their own.

THE CEBUANO

FOOD

VOYAGE BY CAMILLE ANN LLEVADO & CORINTH LAURENTE

Cebu is popular for its historical sites and churches, and especially to its white beaches. Both locals and tourists, who have been to Cebu, know that it’s also a land of irresistible cuisines. Whether you’re looking for a dish, a snack, or a “Pasalubongs”, you’ll always find something delightful in the streets and corners of Cebu. When we talk about pasalubongs, Otap and Dried mango would probably be our first choice. Otap is very common and is a staple at pasalubong shops, not just in Cebu city but in many parts of Visayas. Although it is very hard and brittle on first touch, but it easily melts inside your mouth, leaving sweet lingering traces as you reach for more. Eating otap without creating a mess is almost impossible. It crumbles as soon as you lay a finger on

TRAVEL it. When you take a bite, it breaks into fragments. But nevertheless, the taste is worth the mess. Guimaras may be the most famous for its sweetest mangoes, but Cebu takes the bacon for its dried version. Cebu has perfected the art of drying mangoes that it has become a major exporter unlike its fresh counterpart. Dried mangoes are chewy and hard but they retain the sweetness and its fruity flavor. If you travel northern part of Cebu, you can discover a lot of tasty delicacies. These delicious treats can be seen in various municipalities, on your way to north. Municipality of Liloan is known for their best delicacy, “Masi”. It is a bite size, homemade treat made of Jasmine rice with a sweet peanut paste filling. You can find Masi anywhere around the province, but there is something about the treat made in Liloan that makes locals and visitors wanting to have some more. As you travel further to north, you can see vendors selling Budbud and Bibingka along the road by the Municipalities of Catmon and Borbon. It is a kind of Suman, an elongated steamed rice cake wrapped in banana leaves. Budbud is made from either Pilit, or ground cassava. The best thing about travelling the rest of the southern Cebu is its varied selection of pasalubongs. When it comes to traveling, always save the best for last. While heading to Southern Cebu, never

When you pass by Argao you should not miss having some of their delectable Torta and locally made “tableya.” It is a cupcake-like pastry and is large and topped with sugar bits, grated cheese, or raisins. It is best eaten as a snack paired with a hot cup of hot choco or “sikwati”. NO YOUTH TURN BY TRINA LOUISE RIVERA

“We will become the generation that will lead this country. We can slay away discrimination and accept that progress takes time.”

Turn the television on tonight. In any news program, we observe that most of the reported criminals are under the age of 35. It’s easy to take that today’s youth is less productive. More than not, they are deemed to be inquisitive yet counterproductive and perhaps, reproductive. As young adults on the quest of discovering who we are and what we are meant to be, we face today’s most lamentable social ills: crime, poverty, lack of education, drug or substance abuse, vice, identity crisis and unemployment. Likewise, prevalent issues also consist of the rising number of street children, child abuse, rape, and forced labor, and not to mention, discrimination.

The preceding generations are guilty of discriminating the millenials, to which they have reared themselves. Racism, sexism, and classism – it seems to be that they know better out of their false bias. Adults think we should stay inferior to them, questioning us about what we know about life when we are just basically ‘kids’. The pressure is on the government, too. For instance, the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Filipinos are endangered by a pervasive discrimination that infringes basic human rights, constraining LGBT members’ societal standards and deprived opportunities.

The media is no exception. They, in some ways, demonize the youth as they manipulate the society about us cultureshocking and social media slamming. We live up to the title of ‘selfie generation’. I could sense out the frustration of Dr. Jose Rizal, looking weary with his forehead wrinkled and nose crinkled while hopelessly asking, “Where are the youth who will consecrate their golden hours, their illusions, and their enthusiasm to the welfare of their native land?”

After all, we still are the allies in nation building. We will become the generation that will lead this country. We can slay away discrimination and accept that progress takes time. Let us foster hope, reforms and make use of our resources responsibly. In the age of New Media and technology, today’s youth has the capacity to do more, reach more people and be more knowledgeable. Clearly, we are the future. So much is to say about the youth. There’s no more turning back.

SUPER STUDENTS BY ANTHEA JANE TUAZON

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Young people dream for something big and sometimes, they’re bigger than life. They don’t let their limited capabilities and strengths hinder themselves from getting the future they aspire to have. But what risks really are there to gamble for that dream?

TMRRW

It’s quite admiring to see a working student. One can see the passion reflected in what they do. But being a working student is no easy feat. Some are scholars in universities that they have to maintain a good grade while working until midnight while some are working outside the school and opts to take the graveyard shift. There are basically two possible reasons why a student is employed; first is financial crisis- for most, especially here in the Philippines, taking a job is not a matter of choice but a necessity in funding one’s tuition fee, rented apartment and other school or personal commodities. Second is for experience- this can create a window into the world of job reality and prepare oneself for it. Taking on a part-time job while pursuing a degree is

41

FEATURES hard work, but the benefits are typically greater than the amount of their paychecks. Students who work during their college careers may have better time-management skills than their counterparts. They must understand responsibility and apply it to their daily lives. On the other hand, experts agree that students who work more than 15 to 20 hours per week often experience decreased school success, which can lead to dropping out entirely. Working long hours can also limit opportunities to build friendships and explore interests that enhance intellectual and emotional development. Bottom Line: Balance and moderation. Students must keep in mind the importance of balance. There are many essential aspects in life that needs to be developed at such a young age. Health, for example, is one aspect that must not be overlooked. Lee Strasberg quoted,

“Good health is the most important thing. More than success. More than money. More than power. The road towards the dream is not and will never be cemented. No shortcuts. No cheats. For working students, the journey may be harder but the advantage of earning the learnings and the values will always keep them a step ahead.

There are special people who possess grand confidence to walk in six-inch heels and show their skin in front of a vast crowd. These courageous ones are teenagers who gaily join beauty pageants during town fiestas, mall events, or school-based competitions. They are called contesierras. A made up vocabulary derived from the words contest and sierra. It is a noun which means; a person, particularly the young, who joins beauty pageants everywhere, even beyond mountains! Contesierras are composed of the witty girls, the hottie boys, and the fierce LGBT community. They are usually handled by a manager who brings them to various places to vie with other candidates. Contesierras are donned with naturally beautiful and handsome features making them head turners everywhere they compete in. They are seemingly unstoppable and their confidence is high even at a young age. Whenever there are pageants in any particular area, expect them to be there, wearing their ravishing gowns or tuxedos, flamboyant cultural attires, and sexy bikinis. When asked on why they join these contests, here were some of their brilliant answers. “I join not for fame, but because of my willingness to show what I have and be confidently beautiful with a heart,” “I join for fame and for the prizes (monetary) and rewards (trophies, sashes) I get.” These contesierras have varying goals. We shouldn’t judge or stereotype them because it is

their way of expressing themselves or earning money to help their families. Contesierras have conquered the local stage and they will conquer the different adversities as a Filipino youth. They are proof that the youth is sanguine to themselves in their God-given beauty, talents, and skills. It is amazing to know that the youth have found their own ways of expressing and channeling their own personalities and hobbies.

“Don’t be discouraged if you meet rejections and commit mistakes, make it as your inspiration to succeed instead.” An event that seeks to improve the level of technology and engineering education in the country, particularly in the field of Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE)-SMART SWEEP (Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program) The SWEEP Awards was launched in 2004 to provide college students with the platform to create innovative applications that solve consumer pain points. It is an initiative under SWEEP, a longrunning collaboration between Smart and the academe which aims to raise the standards of engineering and information technology (IT)

education in the country. An end-to-end exercise that can lead to commercialization of what starts out as school projects. And encourages students to create mobile and digital innovations that will help solve common problems. The Smart Sweep aims to help schools produce industry-ready graduates and future technology entrepreneurs. This year, a group from the University of San JoseRecoletos’ College of Information and Communications Technology stood out from other representatives. On the 20th of July, Sept Joshua Rey Lozada, Harniel Salmeron, Alyzza Villahermosa, and Kirster Kyle Quinio grabbed the the SMART SWEEP 2016 championship with their app, BloodSeeker. When asked about the group secrets success, “We have a positive mental attitude and discipline”, Lozada said. The school, through CICCT, supported them by having the dean, Dr. Gregg Gabison coach them. Before the Smart Sweep, they were trained how to deliver a pitch effectively through the college’s annual “Pitchfest”. As the biggest tech competition in the country, for him it created a very big impact in their lives. It opened them to new opportunities and took them closer to their dreams

which is to become startup founders. “My advice to the next generation’s sweep champions is always looking for the pain points the society is facing right now. Always have the determination to solve it. Don’t be discouraged if you meet rejections and commit mistakes, make it as your inspiration to succeed instead. Lastly, trust in the Lord with all your heart”, Lozada narrated. One does not need experience to be an innovator, so the youth should not hesitate to propose technological solutions to common problems, a young startup.

FUTURE CURATING FUTURE BY ANAMARIE NANOL

“Parenthood may be hard, but millennial parents are ready to face the challenge offered to them.” Ever been rejected by a crush in school? Or took an improbable math test? Think it’s hard? Well, you haven’t been going out often. Parenthood is way harder. It takes a lot of patience, effort and sacrifice. The millenials grew up in a different setting and a different era, so would this generation be able to handle the life of a parent? When a person is young, wild and free, nothing matters but himself/herself. They scream YOLO and just enjoy life to the fullest. Their world revolves around fun, themselves, career and relationships, but all this things changes when they become a parent. Millennials are the kind of parents who could immediately understand their child, because they have already been there and grew up in the same setting. They more likely can handle situations that older parents did and because m illennials are born in a more modern era, they can easily adapt to their kids’ tendencies. Millennials are enthusiastic parents; though they become very busy of their work, they know they are only doing it for their kids future. Millennnials also tend to think ahead of things, like improving their lifestyle in order for their family to have a more comfortable life. Although their underdeveloped maturity, they never

forget their responsibilities as parents and always making it to a point that they are doing the right decisions for their family. How cool is it to have millennial parents, even if they’re still young and may seem like they are not ready to become parents, the world may be surprise that millennial kids could be the best parents in the whole wide world. It may not be everyone, but one thing that a millennial parent s good at? They never give up on the challenges of life. Parenthood may be hard, but millennial parents are ready to face the challenge offered to them.

THE PYCC WAY BY CARMELLE FERRATER

“PYCC brings the youth more closer to Christ and teach them on how to serve Christ.” Young people are being stereotyped by some citizens but then not everyone is exactly the same as what the majority would think. Aside from having variety of passion, they also have God. Everyone of us has God and with God, and these young people are closer to God more dedicated and more religious. Parish Youth Coordinating Council (PYCC), a youth ministry, and everyone has an opinion about it. Parents, priests, and the youth themselves have expectations and demands that don’t normally overlap. PYCC brings the youth more closer to Christ and teach them on how to serve Christ. They also encourage young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today and to draw the youth to responsible participation in the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community. Rev. Fr. Jonathan Rubin, the spiritual director of PYCCCathedral shares that it is not his first time to handle he council but as a priest it was his first time. He doesn’t have any problem with the kids he was handling. “Our

relationship is good but I was wondering why is the amount of members not increasing.” PYCC has been inspiring, influencing and drawing the youth closer to God for years now. And it continues to serve the church and the community up to the present. However, it seems to be one of the most taken for granted ministry in the church. Church leaders are hoping that one day the youth may be enlightened and take part in this fulfilling and meaningful undertaking.
