JEFFERSON PARK URBAN CATALYST Team project with Andres Jimenez

Jefferson Park, Chicago, Illinois, USA This project is a result of an intensive, semester-long study of Jefferson Park, a small community on the outskirts of Chicago. The study was an attempt to diagnose the issues that led to the current stagnant urban environment of the area. The main issues identified through the study were 1) residents are isolated from the urban center due to the Kennedy Expressway and a shift in the street grid and 2) automobile traffic density around the urban center inhibits pedestrian travel. The architecture addresses these issues by creating a separate pedestrian axis that is elevated above the busy streets. The axis connects three main nodes of currently abandoned buildings and proposes re-purposing them as live/work buildings, with micro-housing units above shops, restaurants, and a large market near the transit hub. The pedestrian axis is bookended by public parks and connects the residents north of the Kennedy to the neighborhood center. The architecture is designed to expand over time, populating the new pedestrian axis with more businesses than the few originally planned. Grade School [1] Residential Unit [300]

SHARON FIELDHOUSE

Team project with the design/buildLAB at Virginia Tech AIA Blue Ridge Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture 2014 Azure Magazine Student A+ Peoples Choice Award 2015 American-Architects Building of the Year Award 2016 Published in Architect, Dwell, and Azure magazines

Sharon, Virginia, USA This project is the result of many iterations developed by design/buildLAB students to create one work of architecture by combining the most effective qualities of sixteen initial proposals for the CFLL’s new fieldhouse. The collaborative effort resulted in a very minimalist and modern architecture while maintaining a significant connection to the rural site. Its steel and glass materiality is softened by the interior’s white oak ceilings. The building is also oriented to maintain lines of sight between the upper and lower fields and to allow for natural ventilation; the prevailing winds blow down the slope of the site through the building, keeping it surprisingly cool in the heat of summer. As a studio, we undertook every part of the design and construction of this project and learned how to engage with a client in a meaningful discourse about design. I was personally responsible for developing construction documents, building models, the design and layout of the concession stand, the construction of cabinets and picnic tables, as well as many other miscellaneous construction tasks.

HOME FOR AN ELDERLY COUPLE Team project with Julia Vasquez

Pearisburg, Virginia, USA This project is a result of my joint undergraduate thesis investigation with Julia Vasquez into the problems associated with the increasing population of elderly citizens in the United States. The aim of the project was to design an affordable and accessible housing option that increases its inhabitants’ quality of life so as to allow them to happily age in place. The architecture addresses difficulties related to aging with features such as an efficient, open floor-plan within a discreet volume, lever handles where needed, sliding interior doors, affordable air handling solutions, efficient construction practices, durable materials, and integrated accessibility features. The architecture is designed to fit on a very small site and to house only two elderly persons, but can be expanded along its main axis to add extra rooms, depending on the needs of the inhabitants and the dimensions of the available site. The home was designed in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity as a model that could be built across the country. After the design of the architecture was completed, the estimated material cost for the project came to approximately $50,000. 14' - 2 1/2"

PATH TO AN ANCESTRAL COLUMBARIUM

Hypothetical Site in Virginia, USA

This is the project I am currently developing for my graduate thesis. The path to the columbarium begins with a gravel path through an introductory courtyard populated with trees and large rocks. The expansive open area of the courtyard creates a grand feeling of the outdoors and the natural environment while the crunch of gravel underfoot and the rustling of leaves in the dogwood trees creates an intimate phenomenological experience for those inhabiting the space. Directly ahead is the family’s home, on the major axis of the courtyard, but separated from the columbarium out of deference. To the right is a short path into the bordering wood to maintain a connection between the architecture and nature. The path to the columbarium turns ninety-degrees to the left. Leaving the courtyard, travelers descend a grand stair cutting through a sheer cliff. The stair is composed of the same materials present in the courtyard. The handrails are made of local black walnut and steel, with bronze accents. The form of the rail is designed in response to the grip and curvature of the hand. The treads are travertine frames backfilled with gravel to maintain the phenomenological intimacy of the journey. Sounds of rushing water from the river ahead are funneled through grated drains that collect rainwater, which occasionally flows down the stairway. The stair lands at the shore of a small branch of a nearby river and the path continues to a humble bridge constructed of steel and black walnut with bronze accents, recalling the handrails of the grand stair. The railings break and the bridge widens at the center-point of the stream to suggest a moment of pause before the journey’s destination. The path continues toward the funneled entrance of the columbarium. This formal move creates a grand entrance in an otherwise modest structure while simultaneously gathering sound from the surrounding site and concentrating it at the entrance gate. The gate is cast bronze accented with highly ornamented hinges that begin to prepare visitors for the interior. The gate opens into a deep threshold illuminated by a candle sitting in a small alcove on the left and closed to the interior by a heavy black walnut door. Below the candle is a basin formed in the concrete wall filled with water to cleanse one’s hands before entering. The wood door opens into a highly ornamented interior space softly lit by a linear skylight placed above the threshold. The walls are ornamented with terracotta panels mounted on the concrete. In the center of the space is an altar; a pristine block of honed black granite. With the door securely closed, the space is silenced due to sound dampening qualities inherent to the highly articulated and porous surfaces of the terracotta panels. The space is now lit solely from the skylight above the niches wherein lay the cremated remains. The order of the space’s lighting, silence, and geometry, along with the simple altar play counterpoint to the complex ornament of the interior, resulting in a harmonious space for contemplation and remembrance.

SHARON PICNIC TABLES

Fabrication help from John Iaconis & Mitchell August

Sharon, Virginia, USA

Photo credit to Jeff Goldberg, Esto

This project arose out of the necessity to create seating for the Sharon Fieldhouse pavilion. Rather than purchase generic picnic tables from a hardware store, the rest of the design/buildLAB tasked me with designing and fabricating a set of picnic tables that were inexpensive and followed the aesthetic of the pavilion. The tables are made completely out of recycled materials. The steel is left over material from the construction of the exterior “screen” elements of the facade, and the wood is antique oak and pine lumber reclaimed from the demolition of a local warehouse building. The bar-stock was bent, welded together, and painted white to make the table legs. The wood was planed, treated in the same manner as the oak ceiling above it, and bolted to the steel to make the table and benches (the sturdier oak was used for the benches, and the pine for the tables). The wood was also beveled to match the angles of the bent steel legs, fortuitously creating an ergonomic place to rest one’s back. The tables are truly an extension of the rural minimalist aesthetic of the architecture.

Various Locations Sketching is very useful when trying to show something that might otherwise be impossible to convey through other means. In the following images, sketching is used as a tool to express that which could not be captured through photography.
