BH “My favorite thing about Sacramento is the strong bond between the local businesses and community.”
Alli is from Davis, California but moved to Sacramento when she was 21 to attend Sacramento State. She always knew she wanted to be a designer and her passion for creating, photographing, and writing has only grown throughout her time at Sac State. Brooke is 22 years old and has lived in the surrounding areas of Sacramento for most of her life. She has always been involved in the arts, enjoying being able to create while expressing herself in some way. RO “My favorite thing about Sacramento is the endless options of delicious things to put in my stomach.”
TN “My favorite thing about Sacramento is its amazingly diverse community.”
Ryan moved to the Sacramento Area from Redding, CA to study Graphic Design. Ryan has displayed symptoms of graphic-designeritus since an early age but went undiagnosed until stumbling into a “Graphic Design Basics” class at his community college. Since this discovery and relocation to Sacramento his interest in local music, art and design have blossomed into healthy obsessions; fueled by Sacramento’s diverse culture. His favorite forms of self expression are photography and illustration and both can often be found in his design work.
Tracy is from Fairfield, a small city in California, and had always dreamed of becoming an artist since she was small. However, as she grew older, she decided to combine her love of art with her love for computers. Her journey as a graphic designer really began when she started her college years at Sacramento State. In her free time, Tracy enjoys watching movies with friends and family. She also enjoys gaming and drawing, as well as crafting paper gifts.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE By Brooke Hankins
“What the heck is a chocolate fish? This New Zealand style coffee shop gets its name from the area’s fish-shaped confection symbolizing a “thank you” or reward.”
6 • Issue 1
It’s early morning and you’re in that human zombie state, where you’re not fully awake but somehow functioning. Luckily, there are several quality coffee shops sprinkled throughout Sacramento ready to brew you a steamy cup of joe, or caffeinated beverage of some sort. Stroll on over to one of the best in Sacramento, Chocolate Fish. You can find them on 3rd & Q or if you’re in the East Sac area, check out their new location on 48th and Folsom. Before I go on, I know you’re probably wondering: what the heck is a chocolate fish? This New Zealand style coffee shop gets its name from the area’s fish-shaped confection symbolizing a “thank you” or reward. Don’t let the name throw you off however; their quality tea, coffee and espresso drinks continue to draw people from all over Sacramento. More than just your average Starbucks or Peet’s, Chocolate Fish takes pride in delivering quality coffee. Many of their baristas have competed regionally and nationally at the US Barista Championships. They are friendly, knowledgeable and united by their freakishly high passion for coffee. If you enjoy coffee, try one of their famous flat whites. Similar to a latte, but with less milk, this rich espresso drink will make you wish you ordered a size larger. Their white mochas have also been touted as very delicious and are a favorite among many fish fans. Be sure to stop in and if you’re not in a rush, take a seat out on the patio, put your feet up and get your morning off to a great start. Another quality coffee shop that gives Sacramento bragging rights is Broadacre Coffee. Truly a hole in the wall, smushed next to a comic book shop and the Grange, be careful that you don’t miss it walking by. The shop looks like something pulled out of a fairy tale. From the outside, you’d think it was a Euro cottage in the middle of downtown Sacramento. Inside, Broadacre’s hipster interior takes on a humble, earthy appearance. Being near the K Street Mall, this shop is a popular starting point before

hitting dance clubs, or a great quick stop to grab a cup of coffee before starting the daily grind. Regulars recommend trying the honey latte, with extra honey if you have a particularly strong sweet tooth. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, give the lavender latte a shot. Its smooth, creamy texture, hint of lavender, and perfect sweetness with leave you pleasantly surprised and refreshed. If you’re in need of a chill place to study, bring your laptop. Broadacre hosts late night wifi and has plenty of plug-ins to accommodate macbooks galore. If you’re into fresh and local produce, get that cup of coffee to go and walk over to one of Sacramento’s early morning farmer’s markets. The Sunday market has a lot to offer with a huge selection of organic and non-organic produce, fresh cheeses, herbs, meat and even fish. The smell of freshly picked flowers and baked breads draws many Sacramentans to 8th and W st where they do their weekly grocery shopping. Peruse the wide variety of For a little taste of England, stop in the Fox and Goose pub. Many frequent it for their bar scene and awesome happy hour. (You can get $3 well drinks as early as 4 o’clock.) Walk by on an early weekend morning however, and you’ll notice quite a crowd gathering inside. When the Fox and Goose isn’t serving up long islands and draft beers, the restaurant cooks up a mean breakfast and brunch selection. If you’re not in a rush, stop in and join the wait; it’s well worth it trust me. While you’re waiting, enjoy a bloody mary (with bacon anyone)? or choose from their large selection of refreshing Mimosas. Free coffee is also served to waiting customers who aren’t exactly ready to get their drink on early Sunday morning. As far as the food goes, you’re sure to not be disappointed. From the classic omelet and pancakes to a more traditional English dish, there’s something for everyone. The Corned Beef Hash is a popular favorite and almost anyone who has been to the Fox and Goose recommends

loom tomatoes for $3/lb? I’ll take some. Even if you’re not looking to take home some fresh produce for the week, check out the Sunday Farmers’ Market to get a taste of the city’s diverse population and sense of community that brings everyone together. You find you’re stomach starting to grumble mid-morning. It’s that time of day when it’s not early enough for breakfast, but not quite late enough for lunch either. Stop in one of these local restaurants and take advantage of their delicious brunch menus. True to its name, the Tower Cafe resides in part of the old Tower Records building. Founded in 1990, this Sacramento treasure is a solid part of the city’s history. Founder James Seyman opened the Tower Cafe on Earth Day of that year fitting with his main goal of the restaurant: “to bring the hearts, minds and appetites of the city’s diverse population under one roof.” The menu reflects just that, with specialties ranging from Piag’s Thai Steak and Jamaican Jerk Chicken to the American classic: French Toast. Whatever you order, the portions are sure to satisfy so make sure you come here on an empty stomach. The Tower Cafe is truly an original representation of international culture. Inside, the entire place is adorned with pieces from all across the globe. If the weather permits, many choose to dine outdoors on the patio. The lush trees and greenery create an almost rainforest-like atmosphere, offering an escape from the city bustle.

VENTURE VARIETY into
By Tracy Nguyen It’s your day off on a lovely, sunny afternoon. The sky is clear and the neighborhood is quiet. It seems like there’s nothing interesting to do, but you don’t want to waste such a nice afternoon. It’s a great chance to venture out and try something different, so why don’t you? Let’s get off that couch and explore the unknown places of Sacramento. You’ll be surprised that there’s more to it than you ever knew before! So you’ve gone out into the wonders of Sacramento to try something different today. Where exactly should you start? Perhaps you’re looking for something a bit different from the usual at your local shopping mall? Want a new look or just want to experiment with different styles? Or maybe you’re just looking for a different sort of experience. Our first stop is Fringe, a perfect place to go for your fashion needs! It is a sweet little antique shop known for its vintage furniture, art and clothing. It even has a great selection of modern furniture, clothing, and accessories too! Fringe holds the best qualities of various interesting items in a wide range of different styles. When you first walk in, you might be a bit overwhelmed. The little shop looks a lot like a tiny living room filled with tons of stuff everywhere.

You’ll find dolls, old dresses on racks, teapots and teacups, a variety of leather boots and feathered hats, and even a stuffed water buffalo head! Talk about crazy. And the best thing is that everything is one-of-a-kind, showing uniqueness is so many ways. The store is nice and cozy, and its staff is friendly and casual. They’ll treat you like you’ve been friends for years! And even if you aren’t looking for something yourself, you can find loads of unique gift items for a friend or loved one. Send them something as special as they are! Our next stop this afternoon sells one of the most consumed beverages in the entire world (aside from water, that is). Can you believe it? It’s not soda or coffee, but tea! Tea Cozy is one of the few places in Sacramento that has great prices in ratio to its wonderful selection of tasty teas and tea supplies. It’s amazing for tea lovers and welcoming to those new to this popular beverage.
If you’re new to tea, you might be a little overwhelm with all its different choices and not know what kind of tea is right for you, but the staff will be happy to help you out. They have a large variety of flavors and types of teas, including black teas and green teas, Eastern teas and Western teas. Along with all types of teas and tea flavors, Tea Cozy has tons of unique teapots, teacups, and brewing accessories. It is proud to say that it holds collections from both the East and West parts of the world. It even has items such as UK food items such as McVitie’s Biscuits, Cadbury chocolates, jams, and so much more! Be a little adventurous and try some of them out. That’s Creative Juices Events’ motto and it’s our last stop this afternoon as we’re nearing the evening. The events are basically a short, guided class where you are encouraged to paint, make friends, and enjoy delicious foods. You will be guided step by step on how to recreate the featured painting of the day without worrying whether your skills are that of a master painter. The event pushes its guests to explore their creative side and try things outside of their comfort zone. There are two types of main events for Creative Juices: private and public events. With public events, you can register on the official website and
then you’ll meet up at the specified restaurant, bar, or winery. You’ll be able to enjoy delicious drinks and foods along with your painting! With the private events, you can contact Aimee through her email and she will come to any location that you want! She can go to your home, business location, or any other place in Sacramento. In this setting, all you have to do is provide the space for painting and the refreshments for enjoying! Creative Juices Events is a chance to allow yourself to be creative in your own way, even if you don’t know where to start. It’s also a place where you can share your creativity and interests with others just like you! Perhaps you’ll even make some new friends. Whether it’s for lunch or for dinner, whom you’re with, or why you’ve decided to come, it’s a different kind of meal to have at Creative Juices!

SMALL CITY BIG FLAVOR
Sacramento may be a small city, but we have big flavor. Dinnertime is an especially enjoyable time of day in Sacramento and the options are endless and delicious. However, we often fall victim to our routines and wind up in our favorite places to dine over and over again. And don’t get us wrong—our favorites are incredible (Centro Cocina anyone?)—but there are dozens of new joints popping up all over the place and old, well hidden spots that have yet to be discovered. And besides, do you really need an excuse to try a new restaurant, or have that tasty new appetizer or drink that your friends have been talking about? Here’s how Sacramento can meet our every dining need, from a quick bite after work, to a full-fledged immersion into our unique culinary scene. Situation One: You find yourself in the midtown area after work and you don’t quite feel like stuffing yourself and you just want a bite to eat. Or possibly you plan on going out to eat later and you just want something small to tide you over.
18 • Issue 1
If you haven’t made your way into Hock Farm yet you are in luck! Hock Farm is a great stop for a small bite after work. Besides having an incredible atmosphere and a beautiful rustic California interior, their menu is locally sourced and seasonal. Between their bites, small plates, and ‘provisions’ (their term for small bar snacks, like fried okra or mixed olives with fennel and orange zest) they truly offer an impressive list of choices beyond the entrée. If you are in the mood, try one of their signature house bottled cocktails. They are as tasty as they are beautiful. And, if you are lucky, you can even sit at their giant wooden California¬-shaped hand crafted table. If you are in the mood for seafood, you have to check out Blackbird Kitchen + Bar downtown. They offer $1 oysters during happy hour from 3-6 Tuesday–Friday (yes you read that right!!). They are truly magnificent, but on a cold day you might want to try a bowl of their clam chowder instead, which has been touted, with

good reason, as hands down the best chowder in the city. The last stop on our small bites tour is Centro Cocina. Centro (as we lovingly refer to it) has some of the greatest regional Mexican food in Sacramento. Their chef is truly a genius, every item down to their tortilla chips are somehow the best we have ever had (and trust me, we’ve had a lot!). Their happy hour menu boasts $3 and $4 finds such as chips and guac, roasted chili and chicken quesadillas and tacos de papa. They also make a mean tortilla soup. This is definitely our go to place for everything from lunch to dinner to late night. Situation Two: It’s Friday (or insert weekday here) and you and a few coworkers or friends are going to grab a drink together. If you are feeling particularly fancy, you may want to check out Red Rabbit or Shady Lady, depending on what area of downtown you are in. Both tend to get a little busy, but it is for a good reason, these places

are rad. Usually you can find a place on the patios if it is too busy inside. Shady Lady is a Sacramento staple on the hipster/craft bar scene and Red Rabbit is a great newcomer. Red Rabbit features seasonal, unique cocktails that change quite frequently (R.I.P. Basil Cocktail, you will forever be in my heart). The nice thing about Red Rabbit is that it is perfectly acceptable to order fancy cocktail, then follow it up with several $2 Olympia tall cans without the bartender batting an eye. Be prepared to see a lot of plaid and beards, and trust me, I’m definitely not complaining. If you end up getting the munchies, try something off the Tastes menu; they are always serving up unique bites, such as popcorn pork belly, or short rib tacos. Lastly, if you are in the mood for some beer, Low Brau is a must. Their beer menu is extensive and the atmosphere is always lively. Don’t expect too much privacy in Low Brau, as it is modeled after a German beer hall and it has long tables for people to all sit together. It’s great for bigger
groups, but not so great if you want some privacy on a date. Situation Three: Alright, we saved the best one for last, this is truly a Unscene exclusive. You have an open weekend and you do not feel like going to the same places and running into the same people. You want a one of a kind, affordable, and fun, dining experience. Eat Better is the brainchild of a group of 20somethings from Sacramento who believe in a “better dining experience for all”. Their philosophy is simply, Eat Better, Live Better. In January 2013 owners Byron Neville and Virgil Versoza decided that they needed a creative outlet for their food obsession that went one step
further than cooking for and sharing meals with their friends. They also wanted to share their passion and knowledge with others. Their mission is to have a great time cooking, sharing, eating, drinking and most of all appreciating all things food. They accomplish this by staging restaurant takeovers or pop up dinners at different locations around Sacramento— for one night only. No matter who is sitting at the table, this immersive dining experience is fun, exciting, dynamic and a great way to meet new creative and interesting people. Better events are held multiple times throughout the month and are a very new concept in Sacramento. There have only been a handful of

these events so far and they just keep getting better. One of their most recent events, at Bows & Arrows, called Bites + Beats + Beer featured apples as their highlighted ingredient. At this event, you pay just $4 per course (five courses total) so if you only feel like dessert, that’s fine too! Track Seven, a local brewery in Sacramento, provided Beer. All ingredients were locally sourced as well (a hallmark of Eat Better is their commitment to local and seasonal ingredients). Overall, Eat Better events are always a great (and scrumptious!) time. So if you are in the mood for something new and exciting, you have to attend one of their events. To join them on their delicious journey, follow them on Facebook (Eat Better) or check out their website (www.hofisbetter. com/category/eat-better)

THE DAY’S END IS YOUR NIGHT’S BEGINNING By Ryan O’Connor Don’t let the day come to a close with out a grand finale. Sacramento has a great nightlife that only gets better with some local insight. With such a diverse selection of places to spend your night, we don’t have enough time to reveal all of our regular spots. But, we can definitely show you where to start, whether you are looking for drinks, entertainment or a late bite. A night beginning with Red Rabbit always ends well. At Red Rabbit you can expect the patrons to lean more towards the Hipster side of the spectrum. Located at 2718 J St. it is on the same block as Harlow’s and Centro; meaning you can have a great night with out crossing a street. Even if you have already eaten, you can never go wrong ordering some appetizers with your cocktails. They feature a very eclectic cocktail menu but won’t bat an eye if you follow up a cocktail with a brew. Red Rabbit features indoor and outdoor seating, and their back patio is a great place to take your drinks and relax with a small group. Locals have most likely already shared in this experience but Dive Bar is still worth mentioning for its one-of-a-kind atmosphere. Dive Bar usually pulls a young professional crowd based in Sacramento. The drinks are good and the prices are reasonable but it is what’s above the bar that makes this place special. There is a four-foot high, 7,500-gallon aquarium that stretches the distance of the bar and contains a mermaid. On regular intervals the mermaid suit swims the length of the bar, interacting and waving at the crowd. If you aren’t in the mood for just drinks, every one can appreciate a few laughs. Sacramento Comedy Spot is a local comedy venue that holds improv performances and other acts. At 1050 20th St. it is centrally located in the grid. The real draw is the local and up and coming performers and the cost is relatively low. Laughs are guaranteed and the decision to go can be spontaneous; you could go tonight! The venue is pretty small but makes it really

Open Late easy to connect to performers. And of course the have a bar, moving Sacramento Comedy Spot even higher on our list of places to visit. Harlow’s is a music venue and restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere and great entertainment. Guaranteed to be one of the most comfortable places to see a music performance in Sacramento, the walls are lined with seats and there are tables closer to the bar. They have an outdoor patio with a separate bar, insuring that your next drink is never far away. The music always sounds great, the staff is always professional, the food is good and drinks aren’t outrageous. If you go for a show, expect an intimate setting with a fair amount of tables and standing room close to the stage. You can reserve a table by calling in ahead and ordering food. This is a great trick if you are headed to a show and want a table with out showing up too early.

After this great night of fun there is usually one thing left to do before hitting the sack, a late night food run. Two excellent locations for this weekend tradition are Willie’s Burgers and Petra Greek. Willie’s Burgers is at 2415 16th St. and a great place for some food after a night in the downtown or midtown area. Willie’s is a classic burger joint with customizable orders and some great milkshakes. They are locally renown for their simple yet excellent hamburgers and chili-burgers. Depending on how late your night is/was, they also serve breakfast like their Holy Roller: Crepe stuffed with: Fresh Strawberry, Cinnamon Apples, Bananas, Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Sausage or Potatoes.
