A.C.T. American Conservatory Theater is one of San Francisco’s most prolific cultural institutions, providing live theater to San Franciscans for decades as well as offering education to generations of promising actors. Each season offers a mixture of theater classics and contemporary playwriting. My work as a junior designer and fellow at American Conservatory Theater involved the design of a variety of printed material ranging from posters, brochures, and newspaper ads.

/ THE GLASS MENAGERIE
AMERICAN CONSERVATORY THEATER Through A.C.T.’s fellowship program, I got to collaborate with fellows from different departments on a production of Tennessee William’s The Glass Menagerie. The director asked me to depart from the play’s obvious imagery—crystal animals, usually—and reach for a solution that focused on the theme he wanted to emphasize: memory. The identity of the production uses photography to depict the scattered remnants of the character’s memories. I took advantage of our limited budget by shooting at night to allow for dark, high-contrast images to show dramatically even though a photocopy process. The blue paper is a subtle nod to the “blue roses” after which the character Laura is nicknamed.

/ BRING US HOME CHALLENGE
AMERICAN CONSERVATORY THEATER The “Bring Us Home Challenge” asks donors to contribute to A.C.T. at the end of the fiscal year. The campaign’s “returning home” theme contrasts the previous season’s plays, which had more exotic settings than usual. The illustrations of A.C.T.’s two theaters amongst other San Francisco landmarks connect the company to the larger community.

/ SUEÑO PROMOS
AMERICAN CONSERVATORY THEATER To promote the MFA performance of Pedro Calderon de la Barca’s Spanish drama Sueño, I created a colorful flyer series to post around downtown San Francisco. To entice potential attendees, I brought the play’s deeper questions to light through bold, colorful typography set against collages collected from old books.

The Bold Italic The Bold Italic is an SF-based online magazine and event promoter that celebrates life in the Bay Area. Articles use local talent to individually design, illustrate, and provide photography for each story. It is read by a young demographic across the East Bay and San Francisco who appreciates the site’s commitment to colorful, visual storytelling. As their design intern, I was responsible for a number of article layouts, HTML, illustration, type treatments, and event branding. Each project was its own challenge and I was allowed to use my own ideas to breathe life into topics ranging from the rising cost of housing to wacky hairdos.

/ CHEAP RENT MAPS OF SF
THE BOLD ITALIC Amidst a worsening housing crisis, the hunt for housing in San Francisco has become a nightmare. With the help of Zumper, The Bold Italic reveals where cheaper rent “cold pockets” are (in the more expensive areas.) A series of maps dispay these areas, alongside the pros and cons of each neighborhood and a running comparison of prices. I illustrated its main image, laid each section out, indicated the “pockets” and set a running comparison of its average price across the top.

/ COFFEE TASTE TEST
THE BOLD ITALIC In celebration of San Francisco’s well-known coffee snobbery, The Bold Italic asked random Bay Area residents (myself included) to see if the artisinal blends could defeat the nationwide brands in a blind taste test. The layout combines photoessay layouts and tabular data to tell a story about the suprising reality behind the some San Franciscan’s palette for coffee.

/ FANCY LADY HAIR
THE BOLD ITALIC In collaboration with Salon Miel, The Bold Italic found willing male participants for a gender-bending humor piece that gave them fabulous women’s hairdos. Each photo layout incorporates a before and profile views of the models (and their appropriate facial expressions.) The piece was a hit, and remains one of the site’s most “liked” and retweeted stories since its creation.

/ BEER TASTE TEST
THE BOLD ITALIC During my internship, I had another chance to design a “taste test” article. Unlike the coffee taste test, this article divided the beers are put into teams: East Bay, SF, and North Bay. Reacting to commenter’s requests from the last taste test, I included visible statistics that show what individual votes each beer received. For its intro images, I employed GIF animation and labels I cut and placed onto individual bottles.
When the title image is clicked on, an animation starts that fades in a rush of foam atop the beer bottles.

Identity Design As I progress as I designer, I find myself hungry for more work in identity design. I enjoy creating of mediums in a system that is both unified and surprising. I have sought out freelance identity work whenever I can, and hope to continually discover more clients and their unique branding challenges.

/ EPIC FORMS CLOTHING
IDENTITY This new clothing startup’s founder asked me to create the logo and identity for his new brand of women’s fitness apparel. The brand identity departs from competing products through a gray palette and visual language that appeals to women whose fitness lifestyle is based on a commitment to athletic achievement instead of a casual interest in fitness.

/ HAKU TAKU HEALING
IDENTITY A soon-to-be graduate of a Traditional Chinese Medicine program ready to set up his practice approached me about creating an identity for his new clinic. He asked that his branding to reflect the centuries-old history of acupuncture without seeming exotic. Haku Taku’s identity is inspired by the old charts designed by TCM scholars’ oldest texts—filled with interesting tables and maps of the body. A dot motif inspired by acupressure points symbolizes the interconnected functions of both mind and body.
