"The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Foundation planted 79 trees in the park...The area eventually came to be nicknamed "SIDS pond."
A good resident, Glenda Moore, was kind enough to provide some history about this park that many may not be aware. On October 13, 1990, the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Foundation planted 79 trees in the park to memorialize the infants in the United States who died due to causes of SIDS in 1989. The area eventually came to be nicknamed "SIDS pond," even though it was the trees that were dedicated and not the area, and certainly not a pond. There is no pond. In 2018, Roy City added to the festive holiday light display, four animated teddy bears as a further remembrance, with the intention of adding additional teddy bears each year until there is a "teddy bear forest" amongst the trees.
Not to be forgotten in the broader area of this Memorial Park is a holiday red, white and blue tree dedicated to those serving in the military. That holiday tree has been decorated the last few years especially for residents who have lost their lives in military service. This Memorial Park creation and now naming, will be our way to honor those who have departed and help share a legacy to remember. On a separate note, this magazine provides some wonderful stories about people and things. To give it a personal touch, it should include more information about us, Roy citizens. Please consider helping us with your stories to allow us to better understand your rich history. It could be great reading. If you are willing to share, please reach out to Morgan Langholf, 801-774-1021, in the front office and let her know. Enjoy the season and the beginning of fall this month. It is a beautiful time of the year. Robert Dandoy, Mayor

CITY NEWS
City of Roy Updates BREATH OF FRESH AIR AIR FORCE OFFERS AIR SAMPLING IN ROY
This is a friendly reminder that discharging or washing antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, paints, solvents, fertilizers and cement into the storm drain system is illegal. Antifreeze is also attractive and harmful to animals. Please dispose of hazardous materials in the proper manner and place. The Weber County Solid Waste Transfer Station, 801-399-8358, may be contacted for information on hazardous material disposal. Roy City would like to thank the citizens who have assisted with storm water drainage by clearing leaves and debris from the gutters and the storm drain grates. Citizens can be a big help in the winter months also by clearing snow and ice away from the grates until the city crews arrive to clear them. Please sweep up or use a blower to blow grass clippings and fertilizers that get onto driveways, sidewalk, and gutters or streets back onto your own lawn. Please call Roy City Public Works before draining backyard pools. Chlorine levels need to be at 0 before the pool can be drained.
Hill Air Force Base has begun contacting homes and businesses near areas of groundwater contamination coming from the base to notify them that potentially harmful chemical vapors from the groundwater could be entering their homes or workplaces. Those in the affected areas will receive a certified letter from the Air Force explaining the issue and providing instructions on how to have the air inside the home or business tested. Tests will begin in October and go through March of 2020. If vapors are found above established action levels, the Air Force will take steps to prevent those vapors from entering the home or building. The drinking water has not been affected by the contamination. The Air Force has been testing the air inside homes around Hill since 2003. As always, the testing is free, as are any future mitigation efforts. If you do not receive a certified letter, your home or business is not within an area of concern. Information about the program, including maps showing the areas eligible for sampling, is available at www.hill.af.mil/IAP.
The Roy City storm water system runs through the Meadow Creek fishing pond. This water is vital to the pond and must be kept clean. Please dispose of grass clippings, pet waste, paint, fertilizers, tree leaves and seeds etc., properly and help keep our city streets as well as streams and rivers clean. What kind of contaminants might reach our rivers and streams? • Contaminants resulting from unwise landscaping practices such as over watering might include: dirt, leaves, grass clippings, fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. • Masonry and Paving: Fresh concrete and cement-related mortars that wash into lakes, rivers, and streams are toxic to fish and the aquatic environment. Disposing of these materials to storm drains or streams causes serious problems – and is prohibited by law!
2018 CONSUMER CONFIDENCE REPORT
• Oil: Pour waste oil into an unbreakable container (plastic milk jug), seal and label. Do not mix other materials with oil. Call 801-399-8381 or 800-458-0145 for disposal. Please contact the Roy City Public Works Department to report violations at (801) 744-1090 or (801) 774-1098, if it is after hours please call Weber Dispatch at 801-629-8221. Our current storm water ordinance is on our website at www.royutah.org.

UPDATED WATER METER SYSTEM You might have recently noticed members of our Water Department outside of your home. They have been diligent in replacing the water meters throughout the city. While it may temporarily leave you without water, it typically only takes a few minutes to complete the replacement. This process is to ensure each home is updated with our new metering system, which will eventually allow Roy City to switch to monthly billing. At this time, we do not have a time line for completion.

HISTORY
Oscar and Ellen King Jones Oscar Jones was raised in Roy, fell in love with a girl, worked on the railroad and had a mishap with a train later on. by Melissa Spelts
Oscar was the first boy born in Roy to Richard and Elizabeth Jones. He grew up on an 80 acre plot of land where he worked and played with his family. Oscar was young when he stared helping out with chores. He would help move the cattle to the lake. Can you imagine a young boy doing such a big job? Shoes were worn on special occasions so he was barefoot doing this. He must have had tough feet because there were a lot of stickers in that area. When Oscar was 17 he saw Ellen King, a girl working in his Uncle William Baker’s berry field. He thought she was so cute and wanted to meet her. One day he rode his horse back and forth near that field trying to get her attention. Her friends dared her to call him over. She did and that was the first time they spoke. A while later Oscar and Ellen met at Syracuse Resort where Oscar first met Ellen’s mom. They were together a lot after that and on February 17, 1897 they were married in the Salt Lake City Temple. Ellen was one of 12 children born to Hyrum and Alice Bennett King from Hooper. They had a really sweet family. It was said that they had a home where patience, love and harmony existed. That sounds amazing especially seeing that they had such a large family. After they were married Oscar worked for the railroad and was paid $1.25 a day. He also helped where he could in the community by building roads, the canal and other projects. His dad gave him 10 acres in Roy for them to live on. Oscar then bought an old house in Hooper from his father in law and moved it to their land. They made lots of improvements on this house over time. They lived there until 1917 when they built a 6 room house made of brick. Oscar loved being involved in the community. One thing that he enjoyed was the community band. They would have practices at various members’ houses each week. One week, Harry Garrison picked Oscar and his bass drum up for practice. They were meeting at a member’s house on the east side of

the tracks. Oscar was happy to be going to practice and he channeled his enthusiasm into beating his drum as loud as he could. As they were crossing the railroad tracks, they couldn’t hear the train coming because of his loud playing and were hit. Oscar went flying from the car with his drum and broke both his ankle and drum. Harry was lucky and walked away from the accident. What a scary experience. Oscar owned two canneries in Roy and later manufactured salads, puddings and potato chips. You can find this story and more in a book called “Roy Utah Our Home Town” by Rose and Ida Dalton.

9/11 Where Were You?
THIS SPACE RESERVED Feature Article
BY MELISSA SPELTS
On the morning of September 11th, 2001, I was playing with our first child, Koby; he was 6 months old. Today he is a grown man of 18 years. I can clearly remember
9/11 Memorial in Kaysville
his round little face, he was such a happy baby. He was also a morning person which I am not, so I turned on Sesame Street and was resting on the couch while he watched Elmo. Ryan had gone to work early that morning. He worked as a district manager for Cutco Cutlery and primarily recruited student salespeople. That day he had a booth set up on the campus of UNLV and was handing out flyers and talking to potential representatives. Ryan later mentioned that someone gave him a sour look and called him insensitive when he tried to call them over to his booth when another student said, you need to go over to the common room and watch the TV. Ryan immediately called me and said to turn on the news; I could tell he was very disturbed. When I saw the first plane hit the tower, my initial thoughts were that someone had pulled some Hollywood stunt or a joke. Boy was I wrong! I felt so many emotions that day and in the months to come. Later that day, I talked with my mom and found out someone my dad worked for (a close friend) lost immediate family in the second plane, I also later learned that my sister-in-law lost

her sister’s husband in the Pentagon explosion. I couldn’t stop crying for days, my heart just hurt. How could this happen? How could anyone intentionally hurt another person, let alone thousands of people! The ripple effect was huge. It was felt around the world. Ryan and I went on a drive later that day because we needed to get away from the TV. If you have ever been in Las Vegas you probably know the skies are always filled with airplanes. There is a constant line-up of planes in the air either landing or taking off, but that day the sky was empty and silent; in an instant the world stopped turning.
us instead of looking outwards for what we wanted and didn’t have. We saw a common theme in our lives, we were proud to be Americans. We were determined to protect everything that meant so much to us…family, freedom, neighbors, religion, etc. We saw people that were perfect strangers helping those in need. The stories and pictures of people helping where they could were inspiring.
Within time, the world started spinning again, slowly. Life continued on and we all had to go back to work and to school. We had to go to the grocery store and buy food. We were all hurt and sad but life started to inch forward. We started PHOTO BY HAILEY MINTON to notice something was different though. Neighbors were talking to each other, which was not common in Las Vegas, but we would see people outside standing on the sidewalk visiting. We saw people serving others wherever they could. We saw different churches coming together as one to help all those in need regardless of their beliefs. I saw people in grocery stores letting a mother with 3 little children go first in the checkout line. The honking in Vegas isn’t as bad as maybe New York City but it still happens quite a bit more there than here (mostly the cab drivers) but the honking was non-existent for a while. As a society, we were more patient with each other. We hugged our loved ones more and maybe even a little longer. We turned our thoughts to God and saw the blessings we had in front of
The World Trade Center was a large complex of seven buildings in New York City. Two of seven total buildings, known as the twin towers and were visually recognizable nearly everywhere in the world. The attack that happened on the morning of September 11 killed 2,606 people in and within the vicinity of the towers, as well as all 157 on board the two aircraft that were flown into them. Once the towers collapsed, they also destroyed the remaining 5 buildings and ten additional buildings in the surrounding area. Today new buildings are being built around a memorial to those who were killed in the attack. The twin towers were replaced with one building, which is the tallest in the Western Hemisphere, called the One World Trade Center. There are to eventually be 6 sky scrapers in the complex and an elevated park. Where ever you were, we are certain you remember the feelings of fear, dread and anger you must have felt because we felt them too. We also hope that each of you will use those feelings to remember how we acted after those events. It changed us, mostly for the good. Let’s use that to be more kind, forgiving and understanding of each other.
HERE ARE A FEW ACCOUNTS OF PEOPLE WHO TOLD US THEIR STORY OF WHERE THEY WERE ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001. “I was on my way to work in Craig Colorado. I couldn’t get in the school where I taught. Everything was locked up tight. I had left my keys at home and had to wait for almost 20 minutes until somebody else came who had a key. She told me that something had happened in New York and all the schools were on lockdown because they didn’t know if it was widespread. We watched the news in almost every class, all day long.” -Ray Zentz
“I was sitting in Jessup MD. I am a truck driver and was on my way to the Pentagon to pick-up that day. I had to stop before getting there because the load was not going to be ready. One of my daughters and I sat there the night before and waited. September 11, I came out and saw the towers being hit and even coming down. We then heard about everything else happening. We then had to sit there for three days until they opened the roads again.” -William Cain
“I will never forget, I was driving to work and just got out of my car at the office. I was listening to KBUL 93. They said a twin engine plane had just hit the tower. I was thinking a small twin lost power and hit the building. I got into the office and started hearing more. I tried to get on the web, but so was the rest of the world and it was killing the internet around the country. I was asked to set up a TV in the break room. It was a sad day.” -Matt Westrich

BUSINESS
Certified Hypnotherapy Training School BY RYAN SPELTS
After using hypnotherapy techniques himself, Dennis Parker became a hypnotherapist and also runs a training school.
D
ennis Parker was an angry man, and becoming out of control. He could even become violent. He didn’t know why he INFO was angry, but he was. Business: Training Address: 1980 N 2000 W Working as a Farr West,UT commissioned sales person, Phone: (801) 628-0693 Dennis was attempting to support a family with 11 children. Many people didn’t want to buy from an angry sales person, so it wasn’t going well. Dennis’ sister told him about a Hypnotherapist, who worked with such behaviors and felt she could help him. He went to start hypnotherapy. During the session they discovered the root to his anger issues was because his sister was killed 18 years previously. He had never released the emotions he had regarding her death and it was manifesting as anger. Under the treatment of his Hypnotherapist, he released all of that anger and it changed him completely. He was a new man. He was so moved by this treatment he started to study hypnotherapy so he too could become a certified clinical hypnotherapist. Today, 30 years later, Dennis runs two hypnotherapy businesses. First as a clinical hypnotherapist helping people overcome: anxiety, fears and
phobias, self-limiting beliefs, nonmedical solutions for ADD and ADHD, pain control and migraines. He can also help people with debilitating maladaptive behaviors like pornography or self-abuse, sleeping difficulties, weight loss issues, smoking, gambling and addiction to electronic games. He particularly loves that he has helped hundreds of youth prepare for and successfully serve missions.
problem behavior. By addressing the emotional problems and releasing them from the subconscious, the problem behaviors or symptoms go away. It is not just for maladaptive behaviors though. He can also help athletes and salespeople perform at their highest level by learning to manage their minds through what are called ‘The Emotional Skills and Tools of Positive Mind Management’.
Now this is not the carnival trick of hypnosis you may have seen at a state or county fair. This is the use of deep relaxation and meditation, called entering a trance-pondering state, under the guidance of a hypnotherapist to access the subconscious mind and to address and overcome the emotional pains harbored there. These states and forms of hypnosis are only used for clinical therapy, not entertainment.
After helping thousands of people, Dennis felt he could help many more by founding a school. The school is located in Farr West, Utah where students can attend in person, or watch a live broadcast online from anywhere. Certified Hypnotherapy Training School offers course training for 20 different modalities. Students must complete 300 hours of schooling to become certified, 120 hours of live classes and the remainder are available through an online database of 1800 hours of content. Hypnotherapists in training can choose areas of specialty like pain control, addiction, abuse, working with children or other areas of focus.
The second business is a Certified Hypnotherapy Training School for would-be hypnotherapists. The school is a postsecondary proprietary School of Hypnotherapy in the State of Utah, registered and bonded with the Department of Commerce. It is a professional trade school. Students are trained in hypnosis, self-hypnosis, suggestion hypnotherapy, clinical hypnotherapy and PPM Skills. The school’s motto is ‘helping people, help other people’. Hypnosis is really just a controlled deep meditative state where a hypnotherapist can assist the client address emotional challenges that can be at the root of
If you are interested in exploring an education and career as a hypnotherapist, the next course starts September 10th. Students can take and retake the classes as many times as needed so they can learn at their own pace. Be competent, be effective and be confident as you become a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist through Certified Hypnotherapy Training School.

BUSINESS Special article brought to you by Wasatch Peaks Credit Union
5 Overlooked Benefits of Credit Cards Credit cards are convenient. They can be used practically anytime and anywhere, and they often come with exclusive discounts, rewards, and more. You may find that using a credit card for purchases can provide more benefits than you are aware of:
2. Auto Rental Insurance
5. Emergency Funds
Did you know that you could have insurance on your rental car through your credit card? Before signing up for expensive protection from your rental agency, be sure to check the benefits of your credit card and look for any stipulations for insurance usage. Utilizing your credit card auto insurance could save you money on your rental charges and help you have a peaceful vacation.
While credit cards are great for purchases and shopping, you may not have considered your credit card as a lifeline for financial emergencies. Rather than trying to sort out a personal loan or deal with the stress of coming up with the necessary cash at the time you need it, a credit card provides an option for you to cover unexpected costs with a more doable payback schedule. Just remember to pay your card off as soon as you’re able.
3. Purchase Protection
1. Travel Insurance Enjoy peace of mind during your vacation with travel insurance available through your credit card! The coverage of travel insurance can vary between cards – some offer specific benefits like lost luggage reimbursement, while others provide refunds for cancellations and nonrefundable expenses. Having additional coverage through your credit card can really help during the stress of traveling.
You use your credit card to make purchases, so it’s helpful to know if you have protection available for those purchases. Many credit cards offer theft and loss protection on purchases made with your card!
4. Credit Score Boost Credit cards are often the first step into lending for many people, which is why a variety of card options are available. With a credit card, you can begin to build a pattern of on-time payments, which will have long-term benefits. In order to qualify for any major loan or to receive the best interest rates, you’ll need to have built a credit history and a respectable credit score. A credit card can help you get there.
At Wasatch Peaks, we are now offering two new credit card options with great benefits! 1. Join Summit Rewards with our new Summit Rewards Visa Platinum Card and earn 1 point for every $1 spent on your card. 2. Choose our new 1.5% Cash Back Visa Platinum Card and earn cash back on ALL purchases. Get started by contacting our specialists at 801-627-8700 or visit your local Wasatch Peaks branch.

Grandma Moutray’s Peanut Butter Cookies BY MELISSA SPELTS
Going to Grandma’s house is always the best. Especially when Grandma is on the cookie warpath. I loved smelling the delicious scents that accompanied some of my Grandma’s famous cookies. Even if she wasn’t cooking when we showed up, there was always a collection of cookie jars that were always filled with something yummy. A few of the cookie jars played music when you opened them, which meant it was hard to sneak a cookie. When my siblings and I would sleep over, we would try and figure out a way to sneak a cookie without getting caught. We usually failed and would just go to bed. This recipe is one of the favorites, we could often find these in a jar and they are amazing with a tall glass of milk.
