J
uly is the month we recognize the birth of our nation and the arrival of the pioneers in the Salt Lake Valley. Although everything may not be as originally planned, we can be grateful for the opportunities that have been provided to us. July 4th and 24th share a common thread: both dates represent the desire to be independent. Our nation had a longing to be free from the oppressions of the British, while the Pioneers sought freedom from persecution. As we celebrate, it’s my hope that we understand that many have sacrificed for our freedoms. Freedom is not free. Many have given their lives so we can enjoy our inalienable rights. I express my gratitude to the those who have fought for our liberties. The release of the movie, Top Gun: Maverick, was well-timed. Its theme focuses on the military, parallels the spirit of freedom, and teaches some very valuable lessons. I don’t want to spoil the movie for those who haven’t seen it, but after seeing the movie twice, the following are some things I’ve been thinking deeply about: 1. “It’s the pilot, not the plane!” This phrase is a good reminder that it is people that make the difference. 2. If something is important enough, it should be attempted, even if it’s a bit riskier than normal. Sometimes, being too risk-adverse causes us to miss opportunities that can change our lives. 3. There is a time to let go. We should liberate ourselves from the negative experiences that drag us down and prevent us from looking forward. 4. Sometimes, being a maverick results in solutions that haven’t been tried before. Being unorthodox and independent-minded can be beneficial when you’re considerate of others around you. Thinking outside the box has resulted in many innovations that are important to our way of life and freedoms. 5. Sacrificing for others so they can have opportunities provides good outcomes. Because of his concern for others, Maverick took on some tasks that were difficult. He cared about those around him.

Doing the same thing as in the past will not create different results. A variety of home types will be required so our children and grandchildren can have the opportunity to live in North Ogden. 5. Past citizens and leaders have sacrificed to make North Ogden a great place to live. We will have to do the same to ensure our future. City of North Ogden CITY COUNCIL UPDATE • The council will be holding a truth in taxation hearing in August. There will be more information on the actual date and the details around the hearing, but the current limits the council has imposed would be changing the tax rate from .00118 to .001289. • The council has approved the sale of a property west of the O’Reilly Auto Parts, which will be developed into commercial units. The development won’t occur for a year or two as the existing detention basin is relocated to a new location. • The council has approved some amendments to the development agreement at the Village at Prominence Point to facilitate a reduction of impact on the cottages and townhome area by relocating the originally planned four-story senior independent living facility. These units will now be closer to Washington Blvd. and further away from single family homes. • The council has approved the construction agreement with Big D for the new Police Station. There will be a ground-breaking in the near future and we hope to be moving into really soon., • The council has approved providing some help to the Weber County Children’s Justice Center, which helps with children who have been exposed to traumatic events in their lives. The facility will be county-owned, but the services they provide help those young folks get through their difficult experiences.

Employee Spotlight Nash Tate
Nash began working for North Ogden City in 2018 as a seasonal employee in our Parks and Recreation Department. In 2020, he transitioned to full time and is now a storm water operator in our Public Works Department. He’s responsible for maintaining the detention basins and city-owned canal rights-of-way, working with his team to oversee the storm water system throughout the city, and hauling material in the sweeper, leaf truck, and dump trucks. Nash’s greatest accomplishment to date is learning how to run heavy equipment and obtaining his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Dave Smith, Nash’s supervisor, says, “He’s a hard worker, gets in, and hustles to get things done.” Nash is a highflier who willingly takes on extra shifts to make sure a job is completed on time. He’s the epitome of an outdoorsman and thrives in nature whether he’s camping, hunting, or fishing. According to Nash, the best part about working for North Ogden City’s Public Works Department is “working with a good group of people so it doesn’t feel like a job that I don’t like coming to. It’s fun and I’m always learning.” Nash’s usefulness is unmatched! Thank you for all you do. We appreciate you!

Each week, four members of our mowing crew walks a combined 119 miles by push-mowing, edging, and blowing. These miles are the equivalent of walking from North Ogden City to Santaquin City. What a trip! Kudos to each one of them for beating the heat and keeping our lawns mowed to perfection!

Tiffany Staheli is the heart of the parks, recreation facilities, and events in North Ogden. As a long-time resident of North Ogden, she has been an integral part of Cherry Days for years and is always quietly working in the background to improve your experiences at events, sports, aquatics, and in the parks. Planning for Cherry Days starts in January, and it takes many months to complete. It’s Tiffany’s organization and attention to detail that has continually resulted in an event which provides for a quality experience for those who attend, sponsor, and run Cherry Days. If asked, she would give credit to all the other individuals who, like her, put in long hours to get ready for Cherry Days, including the Parks and Rec staff, volunteers, and sponsors. Like most great leaders, she accepts the blame while giving credit for success to others. Despite being given small budgets and short timeframes, Cherry Days has routinely been a great success and the highlight of our summers. This year’s celebration is the 90th year of Cherry Days, and many of you may have noticed the attention to detail in everything that was celebrated. From the midway themed game
area to the food, popcorn, cotton candy, children’s games, parade, and everything else were the brainchild of Tiffany and Nik. This year’s celebration is another great example of how Tiffany and her team put their hearts into everything they do to make sure we all have the type of memories that we can pass on from generation to generation. Great work, Tiffany, and those who support her.

Water Conservation in North Ogden City BY JON CALL
T
he state, county, secondary water providers, North Ogden City, and many residents are concerned about the ability of Utah to continue to use water in the manner we have for the past 100 plus years. Right now, there is no magic bullet on what to change and how to change it; however, it is one of those topics where every little bit counts and all of the efforts by individuals adds up to significant changes and conservation of this limited natural resource. A good example is the role of one of the North Ogden City employees who spends a few hours each day reviewing the meter trends in North Ogden City and looks for leaks or problems which most homeowners probably have not noticed. Depending on the month, it appears that we are seeing reduction in the use of culinary water across the city by approximately 500,000 to 1,000,000 gallons a month. Some of those leaks were dumping tens of thousands of gallons of water a day into the ground outside a home which may not have been discovered for twenty or thirty days. Others are toilets that are malfunctioning, which may not be as serious of a misuse of water, but it still has an impact on the citywide water use. With this new program, we are able to catch these issues quickly and work with the property owner to fix the plumbing and save the water. The mayor and council have put water conservation at the top of their list, while still providing the flexibility for residents to use culinary water on vegetable gardens and other limited uses when the secondary water is turned off towards the end of the summer and in the early fall.

Weber Communities That Care Our community is struggling with mental health. We are seeing higher and more severe occurrences of risk factors associated with mental health conditions, such as stressful life events, family conflict, and low selfesteem. To make matters worse, those of us who experience these struggles are negatively impacted by the stigma associated with receiving services and difficulty accessing services. You would think these would all be reasons for me to be pessimistic about the state of mental health care in our community. I’m not pessimistic. I am actually quite optimistic about the direction of our community efforts. I have been fortunate enough over this past decade to work and collaborate with members of our community who care deeply about making a sustained,

positive impact in our overall community mental health. We all share the same understanding that our community is struggling and change is needed. Part of this change is happening at a grassroots level; individuals like you and me are getting involved in local organizations, focusing on change one little bit at a time. Small community organizations like the Weber Communities That Care Coalition focus on reducing risk factors and strengthening protective factors such as family bonding, access to services, positive conflict resolution, and healthy diet/exercise. I’ve personally seen the positive impact that just one person or organization can have on our community, and I am confident that we are headed in the right direction.

Steve Gray

Have you ever seen a construction site with an artist’s rendition of the final building and landscaping that will be there? Steve Gray is a North Ogden artist who creates that kind of artwork. From a very early age, Steve Gray’s parents could see potential in his artistic abilities and encouraged him. He became involved, was awarded sterling scholar in high school in art, and even won a trip because of his artwork as a senior. Eventually, he turned it into a career doing architectural illustrations for homes and businesses. “We’ve been in this computer age for 30 years, but everything I do is hand drawn or hand painted on illustration board… People appreciate the painting look because they don’t see it elsewhere. There is an appreciation for hand drawn and hand
painted artwork that doesn’t come from a computer.” Steve does a lot of work for the Parade of Homes, where he illustrates the homes ahead of time. The builder provides the colors and the blueprints, and Steve creates it before the home is built. Then, when people come to visit the home, there will be an illustration of the home that visitors can take with them. Each of his illustrations go into a magazine for people to take who attend the parade of homes. He’s been involved in many Parade of Homes, including the one in Park City. A lot of people use computer- generated illustrations for building renditions, but some still recognize the value in the look and feel that comes from hand drawn or painted images. Steve decided to pursue this career
path as an artist, partially because of the higher demand for this type of artwork. “Artists can spend a lifetime creating artwork and finding a clientele to make a living. It’s not easy to do. I realized there was a niche I could do well in. I don’t know anybody who comes out of high school earning a living from painting portraiture and landscaping.” Making a living as an artist takes time and patience. Today, Steve has painted hundreds if not thousands of illustrations, and he plans to continue doing so.

It is easy, in difficult times, to allow ourselves to be engulfed by our own problems, along with the rush of events beyond our control. When such occasions occur, it could be helpful to reflect on those, the true pioneers, who smoothed the trails that we now travel in ease. Our pioneer communities were not free ‘for the taking,’ as most of us who now live here sometimes suppose. They were bought with sweat and tears and heartaches. Pioneer life was neither romantic nor dashing. It was dull repetition of endless chores, bone-wearying work, drab clothing, crudely built dwellings, and extremely grinding poverty. Their very existence could only have been
We of the later generations enjoy great freedoms in making certain choices and, fortunately, are taught to sacrifice things of worldly value for other things of higher worth. How rewarding it is that we love our ancestral homeland! We remain in these pioneer communities through droughts, floods, poor prices, and sporadic prosperity - because this land conquered by our forebearers has a sacred attachment for us. There is something about our communities that somehow renews us. We are better for being a part of it. Hopefully, we of the present generation do have at least a fairly clear understanding of why our predecessors came here and remained on the land. Like them, it is our home. We also belong to the land.

It takes a special type of person to succeed in business. It takes hard work and grit because, sometimes, business is hard. Sometimes, you loose a key client or customer. Sometimes, people get mad at you for something that seems unfair. At other times, it seems that everything is just on fire and all you have is a squirt gun to try and douse the flames. Historically, women have had a harder time in business and had to fight for their rightful place. Today, in my personal observation, some of our most powerful business people are women business leaders. I am impressed every year when interviewing some of these amazing women at their strength and their passion for doing great things. These women don’t make excuses, and they get things done. I, for one, am inspired. This month, we have highlighted women from our community. Some are business owners, others are business leaders. They all play an important role in our local business community. We are honored to tell their stories and hope you will enjoy reading them.
Diane Liberator Diane Liberator started her career in print advertising and was in that industry for most of her career. She did a little in event planning before returning to print advertising at Connection Publishing. She loves seeing advertisers get results with their advertising. She loves making a comprehensive plan for a year with each client and helping them obtain advertisements that really help them increase their business. Diane loves meeting people from all walks of life and that she can develop business partnerships, but more importantly, friendship. Many of her clients have become close friends who are like family to her. Diane is from North Ogden and grew up here. Her first real job was with the Standard Examiner, where she worked for many years. When she applied for Connection Publishing, she mentioned how much she missed doing advertising sales and the connection she had with her advertisers. She has been married for nearly 25 years. She and her husband enjoy going on motorcycle rides, golfing, and playing pickleball. She has two kids, and her husband has three, so they are a blended family. She also has four grandkids. We love having Diane at Connection Publishing; she is awesome to work with and does an amazing job. She recently took over the role of Account Manager for the North Ogden Connection magazine.
Raquel DeSilva
Raquel DeSilva has a bachelors degree in Business Administration and masters degree in Counseling and Mental Health. She was working at another nonprofit and attended a Rotary Club meeting, where a presentation was given about a new nonprofit coming to Ogden. For some time, her mentors had been urging her to spread her wings and try to advance her career, and, although she was hesitant to do so, she decided to apply for a job as the Executive Director of the new nonprofit called Family Promise. She got the job. Family Promise’s primary goal is to help heal families with hope. Sometimes, when you are in crisis, you don’t see options and don’t have hope. Because of rising housing costs, families becoming homeless is a growing crisis. Family Promise helps recently homeless families get training, find an apartment, and get back to being independent. Most importantly, they help these families realize their worth. This is often the greatest problem with a family who becomes homeless: they stop believing in themselves. So far this year, they have helped nine families move from homelessness to independence. Raquel was also the recipient of the 2022 Ogden/Weber Chamber of Commerce Athena Award. She is a powerful contributor to our community. Thank you Raquel!

rudi recently helped a couple baby boomers who lived in the same home for 30 years. For three years, they knew they wanted to move but were afraid to take the next step. “I always try to help through different scenarios.” Moving and buying or selling a home is a life-changing decision, and Trudi keeps her client’s best interests at heart every step of the way. Once this couple decided to move ahead, things did work out! “That is one of the most satisfying feelings… Trust is the biggest thing in this profession.” Having a realtor can really ease peoples’ anxiety and give them peace of mind through this life-altering journey. Integrity and trust is at the heart of everything she does in her profession, even in what some people might consider the little things. “If I am working with friends or family, I’ve told them: if you want people to know you’re moving or selling your house, you need to be the one to tell them. They aren’t going to hear it from me.” Trudi immigrated to the USA from Austria when she was young and ended up in Ogden with her family. She graduated from Ogden High, then became an office manager at Roy Realty. That is what got her interested in Real Estate. She loved the flexibility that came with being a realtor, especially while raising her three kids in Davis County. The
people she works with have kept her working as a realtor. She loves her clients and goes above and beyond for those she works for. Trudi’s accomplishments include Member of the Year for the local and state Women’s Council of Realtors, Realtor of the Year, and President’s Award. Her designations include GRI and CRS.

Smarty Pants Preschool
Life sometimes give you opportunities to grow during times of challenges. BY RYAN SPELTS

ali was going through a divorce, was working 60+ hours a week at her previous business, and had children who needed preschool. Struggling to find a school that met her standards, she decided to sell her previous design business and to start a preschool. Her parents were both educators, and she knew she wanted to create something special that would not only be fun and exciting but would also be something that created great students as they advance. This was not the first school she started. She was actually living in Mountain Green and opened three schools in Morgan County. When she met her current husband, she wanted to be closer to his work at Weber High, so she decided to sell the school and open Smarty Pants in Pleasant View. The school’s focus is preparing students to succeed when they get to kindergarten and beyond. They use data to ensure effectiveness. In fact, they track students and know that 85% of their graduates rank in the top 10% of their future classes. Teachers get excited when they have a Smarty Pants Preschool graduate coming into their class, as they know they will be well-prepared.
Although they take a scientific approach to curriculum development, they still teach with love, and kids love coming and learning.
The school puts students into teacherguided learning pods of eight to 12 students based on their skill level, so students who may already be readers are not put in a group of students who are just learning their letters. Each teacher at the school is educated in early childhood education and is a licensed teacher. They also use data to drive curriculum choices as well as individual needs. Hali said it takes more time to make individual curriculum plans, but it makes a big difference in the students’ progress. Although they take a scientific approach to curriculum development, they still teach with love, and kids love coming and learning. If you would like to enroll your child at Smarty Pants Preschool, you can check with them throughout the year, as openings pop up when people move. The enrollment is in January, and morning classes fill up within a couple of hours. Afternoon classes take a little longer, but they do fill up completely within time. Classes start with two-anda-half-year-olds for discovery. Three- to four-year-olds attend two times per week, and four- to five-year-olds attend three times per week. There are always those what-ifs. But every time I have stepped out of the box and believed in myself I have always had success. It was not always easy but I always succeeded in what I did. We grow and we learn and so my advice to anyone is to take those opportunities and chances and to not be afraid.”

Madalyn has a wide range of hobbies and interests, including playing and teaching piano, website development, English horse riding, clogging, and choir, to name a few. This accomplished graduated senior won several awards during high school in several topics, including Business and Marketing (DECA & FBLA), vocal and piano, and Spanish
while maintaing a 4.0 GPA. She was involved in the Warrior Food Pantry project and said she learned that by serving and spending time with others, she gained a deeper belonging to her community. “I believe that if we all took the time to serve others and spend time them we wouldn’t have contention and problems in the world.” Madalyn hopes to become a software engineer. Congrats!

Brent was killed a few months before his 40th birthday, which would have been July 6, 2019. Family members and friends gathered in his honor that day with a goal to raise $40,000 for his memorial scholarship funds at BYU and the U of U (his alma maters). We called the party “40 for 40”--and we met our goal! The Major Brent Taylor Foundation was born out of this effort, and to date, more than $200,000 has been raised for the Major Brent Taylor Leadership Legacy Scholarship program!

James Steele
James’s high school career included a variety of accomplishments in several areas: track, cross country, National Honor Society, band, MMA, and German club, and a 4.0 GPA to name a few. Earning his Eagle Scout rank taught James about leadership and how to serve his community by repairing a local campsite. He also learned leadership skills by training and teaching at his MMA facility and that caring for others and having genine concern for them leads to effective leading. James says the most important lessons learned in high school were how to be honest with himself and othersand the value of being geniune.

3 Tbsp. brown sugar 4 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. paprika 2 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. ground mustard 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1 (4-pound) boneless pork shoulder, excess fat trimmed and cut into 3-inch chunks 1 Tbsp. canola oil 1 cup chicken stock 6 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar, divided
Start by cutting chicken into cubes. Season well with salt and pepper. In a small bowl, combine honey, soy sauce, onion, vinegar, oil, ginger, and garlic. Dissolve 3 tsp. of cornstarch in 1/4 cup of water in a small bowl and pour into your instant pot. Stir to combine with sauce. Push the saute button and cook sauce for about 5 minutes or until slightly thickened. Place your chicken in the bottom of the pressure cooker. Cook on the meat setting (or on HIGH pressure for non IP) for 15 minutes and then quick release once the 15 minutes is up. Serve with steamed broccoli and rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Set pressure cooker to the high saute setting. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, paprika, chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, mustard, cayenne pepper, cumin, and pepper. Season pork with brown sugar mixture. Heat canola oil; working in two batches, add pork and cook until evenly browned, about 3-4 minutes.

2 cups of brown sugar 1 bottle of ketchup 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper 1/8 tsp. red pepper flakes 4 Tbsp. minced garlic 2 Tbsp. onion powder 2 Tbsp. ground mustard 2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. white pepper
Try This!
Place apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, garlic, onion, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper in a sauce pan. Cook on stove top at medium heat. Bring to a boil. Whisk together until sugar and salt are completely dissolved. Remove from heat. Cool to room temperature.
Stir in chicken stock and 4 Tbsp. vinegar, scraping any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
Pour sauce into a jar or bottle. For best results, refrigerate one day before serving.
Select manual setting; adjust pressure to high and set time for 40 minutes. When finished cooking, quick-release pressure according to manufacturer’s directions.
Shake well before serving.
Remove pork shoulder from the pressure cooker and shred the meat using two forks; stir in remaining 2 Tbsp. vinegar
You can make this days ahead of time. The longer it sits, the more flavors that will come out. It’ll keep in the fridge for 21 days.

BLT Chicken Pasta Salad
This salad is so delicious and a great summer dinner. Just pair with some fresh fruit! ADAPTED FROM CARLSBADCRAVINGS.COM
PASTA SALAD 12 oz. mini farfalle pasta (or other small pasta, like medium shells) 1/2 pound (½ bunch) asparagus with tough ends removed, then cut into 1-inch pieces 1 yellow bell pepper, chopped 1 pint cherry tomatoes, quartered 4 cups roughly chopped romaine lettuce 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 8 oz. thick cut bacon, cooked and chopped or buy pre-made bacon in salad dressing section 2 cups grilled or rotissere chicken, diced The best part of this salad- the zesty lemon chive dressing. Don’t leave out the fresh parm on top!

Rice Crispy Treats
No Bake Cookies
This recipe is super simple and fast to make. When I was a little girl, my mom would put M&Ms in our rice crispy treats on special occasions. I always loved when she did that. It was so fun!

2 cups granulated sugar ½ cup salted butter ½ cup milk (my favorite to use is whole milk) 4 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder 1 cup creamy peanut butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract 3 cups oatmeal

2 bags of marshmallows rice crispy cereal 1 stick of butter M&Ms (optional)
1/3 cup olive oil 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar 2 Tbsp. lemon juice 1 Tbsp. freshly grated lemon zest (approx. 1 lemon) 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 3/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. EACH sugar, dried oregano, dried parsley, and pepper 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives Whisk together all of the Lemon Chive Dressing ingredients. Refrigerate until ready to use. Cook pasta in generously salted water just short of al dente, then add the asparagus to the pot and cook with the pasta for 1 more minute. Drain the pasta and asparagus, rinse with cold water, then toss with a drizzle of olive oil to keep pasta from sticking. Add all of the salad ingredients to a large bowl. Once pasta has cooled, add Lemon Chive Dressing and toss until evenly coated. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste (I like more pepper). Serve immediately.
My favorite way to make these is with a glass bowl and microwave. Put the marshmallow and butter in the bowl and microwave for a minute at a time until the marshmallows are melty. Pour in Rice Crispy cereal, slowly, as you stir it all together. I love my rice crispy treats extra marshmallowy. Once you have it at your favorite consistency, dump it into a pan and let it sit for 30 minutes or so to cool and set. YUMMY!!
In a large pot, add sugar, butter, milk, and cocoa powder. Slowly bring to a boil while whisking. Once it gets to a bowl, allow it to boil for 1 minute. Take your pot off the stove and add oats, peanut butter, and vanilla; mix well. Spoon dough onto parch paper or foil and let cool.
