Ryan: A week before my first site inspection, I found a code that the Office of Permits forgot about when reviewing my site plans. The code states that any shed in Baltimore City must be at least 5 feet away from property lines. Because the plot I’d built on was only 10 feet wide, I was left with enough space to build a 0ft.-wide room. I decided to keep the structure in limbo. By never declaring the construction process complete, I’d evade the need to schedule site visits with city officials. I now had an 8ft. x 10ft. x 10ft. Unknown Object.

Reproductions and Clones The process of engineering that grew out of the industrial revolution has produced technologies and materials that opened up new realms of making as well as new pathways for consumption. It’s core principals (standa rdization, abstraction, and decoupling) allow for the simplificat ion of designs to enable cheap and abundant products. Throug h the reductive nature of this process, the diversity and richn ess of forms is diminished, homogenizing and flattening terra ins. The industrial revolution and the engineering mindset gave ris e to, as ar tist and designer Daisy Ginsberg put it, “desirable un iformity and uniform desires.” The engineering mindset says ye s or no. To each design problem , there is a most efficient solution . In defining efficiency, with the goal of producing one size fits all products and environments, engineering must construct a universal value system. A best world for all, a hierarchy that de fines an endgoal, and decides what can be expended in the re ductive process of maximizing gains.

Triadic Logic Today’s computational systems run off of Binar y: a series of ye s or no (1 or 0) answers that in comb ination can create complex, yet inflexible and didactic phenomen a. Triadic logic introduces a third answer, one which permeates all complex physical systems and is the driver of the evolutionary proc esses which have generated the incredible variety of biological for ms on earth. This ingredient is no ise, randomness, mutation, incoher ance.

Nomadic Spider with Many Legs to Mount Irregular Terrain Ana Leonor and Joao Moura The mutant we present is a small insect-like shelter that can be moved everywhere and attached to any fixed object and receives inhabitants in it’s belly. It is not dependent on a flat soil, because the legs can adjust to any surface regular or irregular and the top tentacles may be attached to trees or any vertical steady structure. It is based on a spider, with the weight distributed between many legs so it becomes lighter.

Structure to Aid in Crossing Israel/Palestine Separation Wall Liam O’Connor A double ramp to be used for crossing the wall that separates Israel and Palestine in the West Bank. The design of the ramp uses the existing architecture of an Israeli guard tower as a structural support, and the underside of the ramp features a shaded rest area with hammocks for weary travelers to take respite from the heat.

Atmospheric data from the balloon would be sent down to the stick-frame structure, where it would be translated into aural compositions propagated as vibrations through the wood by sound transducers. Thanks to Hugo Mulder, Liam O’Connor, Ana Leonor + Joao Moara, and Kate Ruddle for their thoughtful mutations of the Unknown Object. Mutations of the stick-frame structure were submitted through The Mutated Shelter Project’s website, where the 3D model can be downloaded, modified, and resubmitted for archiving. Free 3D modeling programs and resources can be accessed through the website as well. amillionviruses.info/msp
