There Is more to taste, than simply that. The chosen sensory experience relating to taste encapsulates the context of making and drinking a morning coffee and the abrupt contrast of burning the roof of one’s mouth. Smooth aromas float throughout the space, slowly overcoming the house, room by room. The coffee as it is held, is warm and soothing to the soul. The cup radiates warmth. Through the fingers, up the hand and forearm, the coffee becomes an extension of one’s self. Finally, tasting the coffee itself, a silky richness coats the mouth, harmonious and organic in a way. Until the once smooth coffee hits the top of the mouth, causing an instance recoil of the senses. A sharp burning sensation consumes you. Very little remains of the soothing taste and aromas of before. Only sharpness remains. The deep, rich flavors are over powered by sharp, vivid sensations of burning. The physical models explore the experience of making and drinking a coffee that is slightly too hot as it reaches the back of the mouth. Spatial volumes and planar combinations work in a series demonstrating the sensational experiences of drinking a hot coffee. Familiar and comforting spatial forms are gradually overtaken by abrupt, vivid intersecting planes. Theses contrasting planar systems unpack the tasting experience off hot coffee in a special context. In sensory model number 13, a stark contrast is explored between pleasantry and pain. The moment the burning sensation protrudes the enjoyable is re-imagined into volumetric qualities. When designing architectural interpretations of taste, one struggles to envisage purely taste. Other important senses such as touch, smell and appearance all contribute to the overall experience of taste. Diaconu (2006) describe taste as one of the secondary or ‘lower’ senses (p. 2). A ‘subjective character within the experience’ is to say that everybody’s experience of taste is uniquely interpreted (Diaconu, 2006, p. 4).

Sensorial pleasantries enrich the spaces we occupy, informing programmatic qualities within the generic perception of home. These models unpack hedonic qualities within the act of drinking a warm cup of coffee. Coffee drinking can be motivated by sensory enjoyment (Labbe, Ferrage, Rytz, Pace & Martin, 2015) and so the modeled spaces explore how positive sensory experiences can be stimulated. Other motivations for coffee drinking can be utilitarian in nature, including addiction (Labbe, Ferrage, Rytz, Pace & Martin, 2015). Within this investigation, purely pleasurable, hedonistic motivations are considered. Key spatial strategies within the series include scale, curvature, mood and lighting. These four elements interact with each other throughout the model series, exploring the speculated idea of home using these elements as the focus.

Models 1,7,9 and 17 encompass spaces that encourage occupation, these speculative areas can be used to pause and appreciate the hedonic warmth the light provides. Geometric curves are perceived at an intimate scale and occupied as furniture in image 14. Conversely, images 13 and 19 use light at a more intimate scale, creating softly lit areas to pass through. Through design research, a new perspective can be appreciated when empathising home. Combinations of scale, geometric curvature and lighting conditions can create hedonic atmospheres, relating specifically to the narrative of drinking a warm cup of coffee. As so, in relation to the arbitrary perception of home, boundaries shift from physical walls to boundaries of light. Darker spaces could enable more private, intimate occupations (areas to sleep, ablutions). In much the same manner, light areas enable navigation, creating spaces to pause and internally reflect (living spaces, kitchen). Identified in this design research, with the sensorial experience of taste as a primary driver, hedonic atmospheres can be created. Spaces where occupation is a pleasure in itself.

This sensorial investigation unpacks hedonic qualities within the act of drinking a warm cup of coffee. Coffee drinking can be motivated by sensory enjoyment (Labbe, Ferrage, Rytz, Pace & Martin, 2015) and so the modeled space explores how positive sensory experiences can be stimulated. Other motivations for coffee drinking can be utilitarian in nature, including addiction (Labbe, Ferrage, Rytz, Pace & Martin, 2015). Within this investigation, purely pleasurable, hedonistic motivations are considered. Key spatial strategies relating to the scenario are integrated within the final interpretation of home. These include scale, mood, lighting and the manipulation of sightlines. These four elements interact with each other throughout the final piece, exploring the final resolution of home using these elements as the focus. The singular ‘cocoon tree hut’ set among a forest embodies the disconnection from ones apparent environment felt when drinking a cup of coffee. Familiar lighting and scalar strategies have been carried through from previous models to achieve a sense of privacy and intimacy when designing this finalised space. Two off set voids in the cocoon framework, highlight a specific view along the landscape, only visible when the viewer aligns with the viewport. The elongated site extenuates the viewport along this axis. Throughout this design research, a new perspective can be appreciated when empathising home. Combinations of scale, mood, lighting conditions and sightlines can create hedonic atmospheres, relating specifically to the narrative of drinking a warm cup of coffee. As so, in relation to the final resolution of home, a singular space has evolved. Oriented around the previously mentioned spatial strategies, an ethereal and hedonic environment has been derived. Identified in this design research, with the sensorial experience of taste a warm cup of coffee as a primary driver, hedonic atmospheres can be created. Spaces where occupation is a pleasure in itself.
