RYAN J WILLIAMS (ASCAP)

The 1,002nd Night for the Imani Winds

Duration: ca. 6’45 Program Note On classic staple of the folk tale repertoire is Scheherazade and the 1,001 Arabian Nights. To provide an overly brief synopsis, Scheherazade, on her wedding night, realizes that she is to be executed the next morning. In an attempt to prolong her life, she begins telling the king a tale, but does not finish the tale. In his eagerness to find out how the story ends, he delays her execution until he hears the conclusion. This continues for 1,001 nights. But what would happen if there were just one more night?

Performance Notes Several extended/contemporary techniques are employed throughout the work. These pages will act as a reference for not ations and directions used in the score.

Quarter-Tone Notation All parts will encounter quarter-tones. These microtones should be tuned as closely to halfway between half steps as is practical. (For example, in mm. 99-100, the flute and oboe come to a unison on Ctriple-sharp/D-half-flat). The Quarter Tone accidentals used are: Three-Quarters Sharp:
A sharp sign with three vertical lines.

One-Quarter (Half) Sharp:
A sharp sign with a single vertical line.

One-Quarter (Half) Flat:
 A single, backwards flat sign.

Three-Quarters Flat:
Two flat signs, with the first reversed.

Pitch Bending: All Quarter-Tone pitches are approached from an adjacent standard half-step, with a bend either up or down by quarter step. These bends are indicated by straight lines, leading in the direction (upward or downward) of the quarter tone. Example: Flute, m. 99:

Trills/Tremolos: Many “long” notes at the beginning and end are written with trill indications. Next to the note head will be a second notehead, without a stem, and in parenthesis. Treat these like tremolos. Additionally, the movement between pitches need not be steady. The player is invited to add his or her own interpretation and adjust speed throughout the duration of the tone. A note on measure 76: This measure written with “open time” in mind. The flute and clarinet have given figures to be played at random, with space between (attempting to coordinate only so far as that there are limited, if any, silences). Please make an effort to maintain the previously established tempo throughout this section. The bassoon will bring the group back together in measure 77, reentering after a duration of 15 to 20 seconds have elapsed (this time may be extended at the discretion and desire of the performers). Upon re-entry, the bassoonist will establish the new tempo (144), while the flute and clarinet continue their figures at the original tempo. The flute and clarinet will pick up the new tempo (144) upon their re-entry into metered time at measure 79.

Flute - Key Clicks: In the beginning and end of the piece, the flute is asked to click the keys. While there is an appearance of a melodic contour, this is merely to show an randomization of notes. Do not try to key certain notes, but to freely move the fingers about the instrument. Dynamics are also indicated. Again, do not try to actually achieve a “forte” sound. Rather, use the dynamics to shape the intensity of the clicking. Flute - Tongue Pizzicato: The flute part, beginning in measure 91, employs tongue pizzicato. Several websites have offered explanations of the technique, one such is:

Tongue pizzicato, sometimes also called slap tonguing, is a percussive effect, created as the tongue is pulled away from the lips or palate. The motion is opposite to that of a tongue ram, and is often likened to the action of 'spitting rice’. http://www.altoflute.co.uk/05-percussive-effects-and-articulation/extended-articulations.html

The notation used is indicated in the part as such:

Clarinet - Slap Tonguing: Beginning in measure 87, the clarinet will see Slap Tonguing written. Several varieties of notation examples were found in research. The notation used here is:

Horn - Stopped Horn: There are several places where the Horn part calls for “stopping, such as here in measure 84:

All notes to be stopped are indicated with the standard notation. Any notes that do note have the additional + sign are to be played normally.

Mr. Ryan Williams first began composing music as a freshman in high school in Mechanicsburg, PA. Following this passion for more than 20 years, Williams has written many works for a variety of forces, both large and small, with a notable focus being on the wind band. To flesh out his craft, Williams attended West Chester University where he earned his Master of Music Theory and Composition in 2014 and his Bachelor of Music in 2003. While studying at West Chester University, he had the opportunity to work with renowned composers and scholars such as Dr. Robert Maggio, Dr. Adam Silverman, Dr. Lex Rozin, Dr. Mark Rimple, Dr. Andrew Yozviak, and Dr. Larry Nelson. It was during this time that he was selected for the 2014 Charlotte New Music Festival and won the 2014 West Chester University NOW Music Society Speedwriting Competition for an accompanied clarinet piece “Chicken with No Stones, Baby with No Bones.” Building off this success, his master’s thesis, “Pasíon y Fuego,” was a four-movement tour de force for Wind Ensemble, highlighting a different section of the band through Latin dance styles before culminating in a passionate tango. Now, Williams receives commissions for all levels of music, ranging from beginning students and middle school band and to professional musicians. His works have been performed across the Eastern United States and have been described as “a cut above the rest” and “sophisticated” by American composer Mark Camphouse. He is a member of the composer’s collective at CWJ Music House, publishing through that group on the JW Pepper website, and has a set of Bassoon Duets titled “Six Greeting Cards” published through TrevCo Music Publishing. Most of his works, however, are self-published and can be previewed at www.RyanJWilliams.net. In addition to composition, Williams is a performer and technician. As a performer, Williams has 5 years’ experience marching with DCA and DCI drum and bugle corps, earning the 1996 DCA World Championship with the Harrisburg Westshoremen and being a 2000 DCI Finalist with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps. In 2002, he enlisted into the Army Reserve where he served as an instrumentalist, arranger, and composer for 14 years. Since earning a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from York College in 2005, Williams has worked with 32+ competitive and non-competitive high school bands, college bands, and drum corps over the last 17 years. Currently, Williams serves as the tuba technician and brass instructor for the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. Presently, Williams lives in Columbia, SC where he is pursuing is DMA in Music Composition as the University of South Carolina.
