lumni Prize recipient Jenna Cohn, now a freshman at Harvard University, is looking forward to a career involving human health. She’ll be studying biology and related courses, “probably headed to a pre-med major,” she says. She just missed being a “lifer,” entering RCDS in the first grade and graduating with straight “A” grades through all four years in the Upper School. She was a National Merit semi-finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a Presidential Scholar nominee, and was honored with the University of Pennsylvania Book Award, the Science Award and the English Award. She also won two gold medals and two silver medals in the National Latin Exam. She completed eight Advanced Placement courses. For four years, Jenna was a mid-fielder on the soccer team, which won the New York State independent school championship in her freshman year and the Fairfield Athletic Association title in her sophomore year. Jenna was a hurdler and sprinter on the track team for two years and manager of the varsity tennis team as a junior.

Jenna Cohn

Jenna was a peer tutor in math and Latin; a peer mentor; founder of Give to Learn, a club that helps support schools in the Dominican Republic; a teacher and mentor in the STEM program that inspires middle-school girls in science, technology, engineering, and math; and a mentor in SET, the Saturday Enrichment Tutorial program that teaches English literacy skills to local youngsters. For six weeks in the summer of 2017, Jenna volunteered and interned at Lenox Hill Hospital, followed by a week as a cardiothoracic intern at Medstar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. In 2016, she attended Brown University for a pre-college program, “A week in the life of a medical student.” Without doubt, however, Jenna says that her most satisfying volunteer work has been with the ZAC Foundation, named in memory of her brother Zachary Archer Cohn, who died in a swimming accident at age six. The Foundation conducts four-day camps around the country for water safety and drowning prevention.

avid has moved along to Princeton University after an outstanding career at RCDS, capped by the Alumni Award, the School’s highest honor. He plans to study physics and the classics at Princeton and is aiming at a future in medicine, law, or scientific research. Home schooled through the lower grades, David entered RCDS in the ninth grade and during his four years in the Upper School completed 30 curriculum courses, each one resulting in an “A.” David was a National Merit Scholar, a Presidential Scholar nominee, and the recipient of numerous other school awards including the Gretchen Pulverman Scholarship, Chinese Award, Choir Award, and Harvard University Book Award. He also completed nine Advanced Placement courses and three post-AP courses, and was named an AP National Scholar. He won a gold medal and two silvers in the National Latin Exam and two silver medals in the Chinese Language Association Essay Contest. He plans to continue studying Chinese with the hope of “being fluent by the time I graduate Princeton.”

David Jensen

All the while, David still found time to sing bass in the a cappella WildScats group, sing in both the choir and the honors choir, play piano with a chamber music group, perform in two school musicals and twice in the one-act play programs, and for all four years played piano with the Major Leagues Club, a musical group that performed at nursing homes and other community activities. He was president of the Math Club, a member of the Model UN and a tutor in English. He ran on the cross country and track and field teams, and for two years was on the fencing team. In his senior year, David won the Coaches Award for cross country. David enjoys traveling, camping, hiking, biking, playing the piano, and visiting museums to study ancient Roman civilizations.

Headmaster’s Prize Recipients

by Dick Mann

Headmaster’s Prize recipients, from left, Matthew Molinelli, Celeste Kelly, and Madeline Zuber with Mr. Nelson.

Celeste Kelly Celeste, a “lifer” who entered RCDS as a pre-kindergarten student, is attending Brown University, where she’s majoring in Africana Studies and Languages. Her long-term goal is law school for a career that “probably will deal with civil rights issues,” she says. Celeste completed ten Advanced Placement courses and six honors courses and favored history, English, and French, classes. She has studied French since the second grade and has won two silver medals and received national rankings in the National French Contest. She was also awarded a gold key for an essay and an honorable mention for a short story in a Westchester writing competition, and a silver key for a digital art/photo submission in a scholastic art contest. In 2017, Celeste was honored with the RCDS James P. Godfrey Award for community service. Celeste was co-president of the Students of Color program, an English teacher in the Saturday Enrichment Tutorial program, an Oral Proficiency Intern in French, treasurer of the Peer Leadership program, and a peer tutor in humanities, French, and English studies. She was editor of the literary magazine and the Blend Food magazine, managing editor of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, management) magazine, and a lead columnist for the school newspaper. In her junior year, Celeste represented RCDS at the Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif. Celeste was captain of the sailing team, for which she won the 2017 Coaches Award, and also captain of the fencing team, on which she competed in both sabre and epee. She was honored with the 2018 All-Star Award for fencing. During her summers in the Upper School, Celeste took science courses at Cornell University, attended the Champlain College Young Writer’s Conference, studied French at a school in Montpellier, France, and worked as an intern at two Westchester corporations.

Matthew Molinelli Matt entered RCDS in the tenth grade and was a straight-A student through all three years in the Upper School. His favorite courses were math, physics, and computer science, which staged his future at Columbia University, where he’s enrolled in the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. At RCDS, Matt completed 10 Advanced Placement courses and was named an AP National Scholar. In addition he received a gold medal in the National Latin Exam, and a gold medal followed by a silver medal in the National French Contest. He was honored with the Dartmouth Book Award and the Computer Science Award in his junior year and the Math Department Award in his senior year. He also was a member of the Young

Physicists Tournament team that won the championship of the annual competition in his junior year. Matt was a campus tour guide, a peer tutor of math and physics students, and a member of SWAT (Students Working to Advance Technology), in which he taught computer science to middle-schoolers. As a senior project, he designed and developed an automatic computer scheduler that is used by the RCDS Admissions Office in scheduling tours and guides for campus visitors. Matt was captain and winner of the Coaches Award for both the soccer team, on which he played center defense, and the track and field team, on which he ran the hurdles and competed in the long jump. He also found time to perform in the oneact plays for all three years, as well as in two musicals, All Shook Up and Pippin. In the summer following his junior year, Matt attended the Columbia Summer High School Immersion Program for a three-week, college-level physics class.

Madeline Zuber Maddie, coming off an honors-filled career at RCDS, was accepted as a student at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and soon after was named a member of the Wharton Scholars Program, an honors program that emphasizes the importance of the liberal arts within a business education. She’s aiming at a major combining finance, business analytics, and management, while also studying Spanish and nutrition. Maddie entered RCDS in the fifth grade and was a straight-A student through the Upper School, where she favored classes in math and Spanish and excelled in student athletics. She completed nine Advanced Placement courses, won the Spanish Prize and the Brown University Book Award, and three gold medals in the National Spanish Exam. Maddie also won the Mary Borton Award as the top senior girl scholar-athlete. For all four years in the Upper School she played - and captained - three varsity sports: soccer, ice hockey, and track and field. She played center and wing on the hockey team and was named to the division’s all-academic first team, and won the RCDS Coaches Award in 2016 and the MVP Award in 2017. In 2017, she was named MVP of both the soccer team and the track team. She ran the hurdles and sprints and won the Coaches Award for track in 2018. Maddie was president of Peer Tutoring; president of GOPiNK, a breast cancer support group; an oral proficiency instructor for a middle-school Spanish class; a tutor in English literacy skills as a member of SET; and a member of buildOn, a group that helped build a school in Nicaragua. During her summers she has worked as a camp counselor with the Lymphoma Research Foundation, volunteered in a global citizenship program in Cuba, and taken Spanish classes while living with a family in Spain.

Charlie Curnin ’18

Helena Zimmerman ’19

The U.S. Department of Education named senior Charlie Curnin as a member of the 54th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars, which recognized 161 high school seniors for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields. During his time in the RCDS Upper School, Charlie excelled in the classroom while taking six honors courses, nine Advanced Placement courses, and five post-AP courses. Having stretched the bounds of the school’s curriculum in math, physics, and Latin, he pursued independent study in Quantum Mechanics, a guided study in Advanced Topics in Latin Language and Literature, and a course in Multivariable Calculus with Stanford University online. Last summer, Charlie took a job with the Ashley Laboratory at Stanford University working with big data, specifically in the field of bio-informatics, and in June, he completed a senior project that extended his work with the Ashley Lab. He matriculated at Stanford this fall.

Helena Zimmerman was honored this spring as a national recipient of the Prudential Spirit of Community Award, the largest youth recognition program in the United States based exclusively on volunteer community service. Then later in the spring, she also received the Diller Family Foundation’s Tikkun Olam Award to support Jewish Teen Leadership. Helena co-founded a nonprofit organization, TeensGive.org, that connects teens with rewarding volunteer opportunities based on their skills and interest as well as availability from week to week. The website provides a menu of options that allows prospective volunteers to provide academic enrichment to kids in after-school programs in communities across the country.
