Happiness is like the answer to a riddle. The more we want it and the more we seek it, the more elusive it becomes. And yet, when we are least conscious of looking for it, it can envelop us in a warm sense of contentment and belonging, making a single moment precious and valuable beyond measure. A feeling of happiness has the power to light up our whole being. Scientists will tell us that it has the power to heal and to extend life. It is the ingredient we all seek to make our lives complete. Like the air we breathe, we are not conscious that we need it, until it disappears. Happiness makes us feel glad to be alive. The Little Pocket Book of Happiness offers you a more joyous approach to living and thinking; a shift in approach that may reframe your view of the world; simple things you can do to reconsider your life – consciously – so that you can decide whether now is the time when you can be happier. It includes strategies to warm the heart and open the mind to the extraordinary power of happiness. It shares the experiences of others and provides the closest we might have to a happiness ‘formula’. The good news is, happiness is within everyone’s grasp. • Happiness is part of the political agenda, with the Office for National Statistics measuring the well-being of the UK since 2011. • This subject has wide appeal – everyone wants to be happy and there are an increasing number of studies and articles on what makes us happy. • A handy format for reading on the move, beautifully illustrated and full of useful advice, this is a practical as well as an inspirational book.

CULTIVATING THE ATTITUDES Key attitudes underpin and support our mindfulness practice. All of these are cultivated through our “formal” meditation practice but we can also encourage them in our day-to-day life.
Striving for a par ticular result or goal is counterproductive. We are learning to be with our experience right now. Striving has a driven quality to it, suggesting something could be better. When we are striving toward something we are focused on a single end and constantly checking to see how far we are from it. Non-
striving feels more spacious—there is more room for unforeseen oppor tunities to arise. Paradoxically we are more likely to get where we want to be when we can let go of

Curiosity is an impor tant component of our practice. When we are curious about
striving. Where do you strive in everyday life? If it feels tricky, begin with something very

and is crucial in learning to be with difficulties in a different way to normal. We can be
curious about our own experience, our environment, and other people. Practice being curious and see what you discover.
Experience this in-breath as if you have never breathed before. What do you discover?
Non-judging is at the heart of mindfulness. Noticing the judging thought, acknowledging it and letting it go is not easy. Gently labelling it, “judging is here” can be helpful. There is nothing wrong with having an opinion about something but notice the quality of that opinion. Is there a sense of righteousness about it?
Acceptance is not something that we can force. It has to arise from within. Learning to accept when things are not as we would like them is never easy. We are learning this skill when we are practicing being with everyday irritations—an itchy nose or pins and needles in our feet—accepting that things are not as we would like them to be.
Each day this week choose one of the Attitudes above to pay attention
to. Explore what it feels like (noticing your thoughts, emotions, and felt sensations in the body). Notice too what arises when the attitude is absent and the opposite is present.
Practice tuning into the body with a Body Scan (see page 24) every day if you can.

A YEAR OF LIVING MINDFULLY | 89
Health, Mind, Body & Spirit
Anna Black believes we can see our essential nature as the blue sky and our experience, good and bad, simply as impersonal weather that obscures it from time to time. We can’t stop the difficult times occurring but we can help ourselves move through them by connecting with our essential nature through mindfulness. In A Year of Living Mindfully Anna helps you to gradually integrate mindfulness into your everyday life. Week by week it suggests different activities and meditations to cultivate present moment awareness. The emphasis is on progressing at your own pace and cultivating a spirit of curiosity about the moments that make up your life. There is plenty of space to reflect on your experience and what you are discovering. Anna suggests ways to actively cultivate qualities that build our emotional resilience in the same way we may exercise to improve our physical fitness. We can learn to handle difficult emotions more positively and learn to respond to experiences.

Heather Roan Robbins believes how we respond to the Moon’s powerful influence is key to how we lead our life. When we know today’s Moon sign, we know what to expect of the public mood and how to handle people easily. When we know the Moon we were born under, we have a new understanding of ourselves, what drives us, and what makes us feel at home. Part I explores the meaning and usefulness of the sign of the Moon each calendar day to help us navigate our day. Part II explores the imprint of that sign and phase of the Moon at the moment of birth. Health, Mind, Body & Spirit
Tricksters have been around since the beginning of time. This archetype is a figure that appears in folklore and mythology from around the world, and presents itself in a variety of forms, including animal (Coyote, Raven, Brer Rabbit), human (Jack and the Beanstalk), and deity (Norse Loki). The trickster is a complex character with an altogether different type of energy that is surprisingly essential to our wellbeing. This archetype represents the unexpected. Events that happen beyond our control and that can test us to the very limits. Yet these events, no matter how challenging, can also teach us something about ourselves and the need for spontaneity. In Trickster Magic Kirsten Riddle explores these irresistible rascals who are the arrogant charmers we love to hate, the individuals that get under our skin and who despite their disruptive nature, always seem to fall on their feet. So how can we work with such erratic energy and invite the trickster into our lives without causing mayhem? The key is in learning to embrace change. Accompany Kirsten Riddle on this transformative and magical journey and learn to see the funny side when things seem bleak, and notice the fine line between the ridiculous and the truly ingenious!
