TOKYO 205Q -after earthquake- Sci-Arc Thesis
[ Map 2050, Tokyo ]
[ Tea House, Chidorigakubuchi ]
The 20th century was an age of development and expansion. Cities and architecture became a turbo-charger that accelerated the flows of liquidated capital instead of being the footing of people’s lives. We will face a new beginning, a shift from the industrial revolution. It comes with the information revolution, environmental catastrophe, and a new demographic structure. These agencies will bring new implications for cities and architecture. It will require “shrinking” to deal with these issues, a radical paradigm shift that is unavoidable. The site of my thesis is located in Tokyo after an impending earthquake in 2050. The earthquake causes the problems of the city to rise to the surface, and establishes a crossroads that will lead us to a new standard. Urban planning will start from the micro scale, like a fabric that is woven by thin fiber, unlike modernist urban planning, whose organization was inspired by the machine. The strategy can envision a macro-scale city plan from small empty spaces that are created by the earthquake and an aging society, the “shrinkage”. The goal of this thesis is to bring a new perspective of nature to the city. Nature, not to be understood solely as “green”, but rather as the environment as a whole: Mother Nature. We lost this nature from cities while we were expanding them. Architecture in the 20th century has substantially discouraged people from having archetypal sensibilities. This means, architecture will help people bring these qualities back, re-establishing our relationship to nature. Every country will have their own earthquake, some tangible, others invisible. With each occurrence, comes an opportunity for the paradigm of architecture to transform. One day, the new landscape of nature created by eggs and their architecture will make the flow of the liquidated capital controlling our life slowly disappear, and eventually break the Wall.

Los Angeles Arts District Let’s not talk architecture competition THE ARTS DISTRICT IS HOME TO MANY ARTISTS, ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS, FILM-MAKERS, MUSICIANS AND OTHERS IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY, IT IS A UNIQUE COMMUNITY WITH MANY RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES.
DESIGN COMMUNITY LET’S SEE WHAT THE CONDITIONS AND ISSUES ARE, VIS-A-VIS POTENTIAL FOR COLLABORATION ... ...
FORMERLY AN INDUSTRIAL AREA, IT CURRENTLY FACES GENTRIFICATION AND PRESERVATION ISSUES. IT IS ALSO DEBILITATED WITH MISUSED SPACES AND ABANDONED BUILDINGS THAT ARE CLOTTED BY DIVISIVE BARRIERS.
RENT IS TOO EXPENSIVE; THE NEW APARTMENTS ARE TAKING OVER MY SPACE FOR ART.
WE NEED MORE COMMON SPACES FOR INTERACTION.
THERE HAS TO BE A MORE CREATIVE WAY TO PRESERVE OLDER BUILDINGS.
THIS PLACE NEEDS SOME LIFE, MAN!
THE ECONOMY IS HURTING MY BUSINESS.
OUR URBAN ENVIRONMENT NEEDS TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE.

I HAVE GOOD IDEAS.
I KNOW THE COMMUNITY.
I CAN DESIGN THE BANNERS.
BRANDING AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION STRATEGY TO PROMOTE THE ARTS DISTRICT CAN BE DONE IN COLLABORATION WITH GRAPHIC DESIGNERS IN THE COMMUNITY.
WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER WITH ARTISTS AND RESIDENTS, AS THEY CAN PROVIDE DIFFERENT IDEAS AND INSIGHTS.
