ON THE

FRESHMAN CLASS 2016

HERE IT IS, THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED ARTIST ON THE RYZE FRESHMAN CLASS 2016. After much research and inquiry, listening to music, and asking those across several media platforms their opinion on who should be recommended and included, we at RYZE have finally selected the members of this year’s class of artist on the RYZE. While some of the artists represented were chosen by a public display of support, others were favorites across the board. As we continue on with this process for years and editions to come, we will look to include a spot picked entirely by public appeal through votes. It will go to the artist(s), who receive the most votes from the public during the week long voting process -- that wasn’t already selected by RYZE for the list.

THEN. NOW. TOMORROW... “Salvation, Slugs and the Passover”

Anton Eshon Hairston, better known as “Eshon Burgundy”, born April 21, in Abington, Pennsylvania; started his career in the underground movement. After devoting his life to Christ (2001), he switched focus and began making overtly Christian-themed rap music. Hairston built his touring résumé performing across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom alongside artists both inside and far beyond the Christian rap scene, including Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Alicia Keys, and contributed to DJ Jazzy Jeff’s 2007 release, The Return of the Magnificent. After several guest appearances on numerous projects and mixtapes

by fellow believers, including Jackie Hill Perry, Alert312, and Andy Mineo, Eshon Burgundy’s first album, Blood Rushing to My Head, was released in 2012. The mixtape For God’s Sake appeared in 2013, followed by 2015’s Billboard charting The Fear of God. Burgundy released his highly anticipated third album, The Passover (2016), Burgundy’s new project, a 10 song set, showcases an energized and renewed Eshon, masterfully fusing incisive and reverent lyrics with dynamic production. Accompanying The Passover, is the first collection of exclusive merchandise from

“ Its a privilege to have the opportunity to forgive people that have betrayed you.” ESHON BURGUNDY

NFTRY Apparel, Eshon Burgundy’s collaborative effort with Maison de Grace. How do you deal with being shot years ago? “The song “What I Prayed For”, was written around the time I wrote “Blood Rushing to My Head” from old emotions. I felt betrayed by mankind. Someone that didn’t know me, tried to hurt me for something I didn’t do. I was a pret-

didn’t rob people, or deal drugs… so to have somebody violate you, when you feel like it is unwarranted, is tough to deal with. This experience puts you in a weird place, and I struggled to forgive people that caused me pain, and harm.. this happened like 4 1/2 years ago that struggle is still real. Which song should listeners pay attention to? “It’s actually 2 songs “Gunz and Roses” a really heavy, meaty cut, and

“Before I Chose You”, would be the theme song of the album, that’s where I talk about getting shot”. Tell us about NFTRY. “It’s not a traditional record label, it’s more of a support system. The artists are still independent, but they belong to something bigger than them. We hope that one day they will get major backing and support”. How do you balance music and family? “I’ve learned to keep things in the right perspective. It used to be more about the music, but I’ve matured. I know now that it’s more important to home, than on the road. I do think at times, this decision could have held me back from being further along in my career; but, I also feel that if the Lord wants that for me then He can and will make that happen… it’s all about timing. Until then, I’m most concerned about my first ministry, which is my family”.

Who are some of your musical inspirations? “They come from a lot of different places. Growing up my mom put me on to rap, jazz, and R&B so I’ve enjoyed a great variety. Everything inspires me. I’m still not doing music like I visualize it, I still haven’t completely done it or been in that space where I’m able to do music like that”. What’s next for Eshon Burgundy? “Honestly, I don’t know. I just want to be obedient to whatever the Father says”.

Meaning, whoever reads your vision, (and agrees) can take action and help with execution. If you want people to help you get your music to a worldwide audience, not only do you need a great project, but you also need a greater game plan on how to share your music with the world.

A talk with Tony D On the Radio... The Independent Gospel music arena is filled with great up and coming talent. There’s no genre underrepresented. You can find Christian Hip Hop, choirs, spoken word, and quartet groups to name a few. Although there are many artists, it’s safe to say, some may not be recognizable outside social media platforms. Several have had brief stints on the radio, but not consistent airplay. The art of breaking into the ever-changing music industry takes a great deal of research, plan-

ning, finances and perseverance. Many artists tell me as we converse that, “God either told them, showed them, or they received a Word spoken over their lives, that they were going to be world renowned artist.” My response, has been “Awesome, let’s see your plan to make it happen.” Very few have thought beyond their musical talent, to produce an outline of action, once their music’s been recorded. The Bible states, “Write the vision and make it plain (Habakkuk 2:2, KJV).

There are many steps that an artist must consider while planning a strategic campaign to draw awareness. The following three points offer a basic foundation in business management and strategic planning in the music industry. Research the industry while preparing your music. It’s a tedious undertaking that many bypass, but nevertheless critical, because it will save you a great deal of time later. Research assists with proper develop of strategies to use when marketing your music. Research also exposes you to the necessary methods to obtain airplay and media exposure (print and electronic outlets). This step helps you save

time, and money that can be invested elsewhere. Learning the business and what’s needed equals success. Write the Plan every successful team has a play list or play sheet that’s been practiced over and over. On game day the game plan is expected to be executed. Without the game plan the team will be unprepared and will not be in position to be victorious. Research without a written game plan or POA Plan of Action will result in unfulfilled goals and usually leads people to abandon the desired task. Write out step by step goals that are achievable. Create reasonable deadlines to achieve these goals. Categorize the goals in the order of importance, and stick to them. You may have to adjust the deadline, but just adjusting deadlines is better than abandoning them. Once you research make sure to create a plan. Create a Budget in my opinion, the financial portion is key to successful execution of the entire plan. Without a solid budget for marketing, promotion, product, graphics, etc.

your project no matter how great it is, will have a hard time reaching the masses. Creating a budget is key, for the simple fact that most emerging artist still work 9 to 5. Most funding for the project comes from your work income. Should something happen to your job, there goes your money for your project. If you have to decide between repairing your car to get to work or purchasing CD’s to sell, repairing the car will become the priority. Set aside a budget, and remember to save also. Here’s a few ideas I’ve shared with other artists that were successful. 1. Yard or Garage Sales: Sell the ‘Stuff” you have sitting around the house and in the garage or shed. What you may consider junk may be someone else’s treasure. 2. Sell your product: If you happen to have CD’s on hand, sell them. Reduce the price from 10.00 to 5.00 or maybe even 3.00 if you can. Try setting up at your local flea market. Set up as if you were at a big event. Bring a small PA system and perform. You would be surprised how many CD’s you could sell. You might even get some

engagements out of the deal. For those fans who download music, CD Baby as well as other digital distribution companies have Digital Download Cards. For around 25.00 you can get 100 download cards. You can sell these cards from 2.00 to 10.00. doing this will allow you to quickly recoup your investment and make a profit for your budget. Finally, there is nothing wrong with asking people for assistance. Ask people to support your endeavor by sowing a seed into your budget for furthering your project goals. You’d be surprised who would help you if you just asked. I like to say “A Closed Mouth, is one that Don’t Get Fed.” I believe following these suggestions will allow you to develop as an artist and a business, whether you know it or not, “You are a business!” Just because you consider yourself as an emerging artist or an “indie” doesn’t mean that you have to handle yourself in that light. Remember, Research, Game plan, and Creating a budget, makes all the difference. I’m Tony D On the Radio, and I approve this message!
