New York City, USA 2010 / © Vincent Laforet, Norman McGrath The complex is the largest public tennis facility built in New York City in half a century and is located on Randall’s Island in the East River. The program for the six acre site included a 20-court complex with five permanently enclosed and fifteen seasonal indoor/outdoor courts, a 16,000 SF clubhouse, stadium seating for 1,200 spectators capable of expanding to 2,500 during tournament events, and outdoor plazas for the public. The building elements of the program are merged into one building with the field house and clubhouse incorporated into one 6-bay preengineered steel structure. ONE PENN PLAzA
New York City, USA 2011 / © RZAPS
The space is built over a multistory underground garage and is, therefore, essentially a roof condition. A requirement of the building owner was that none of the existing paving be disturbed. As a result, the design became an assemblage of planes superimposed onto the existing surfaces. The design created was a central platform with perimeter ramps where the central café is located. The platform creating the plaza preserves the large existing planter beneath allowing new trees to grow from openings in the new surface. A landscape art installation, “Sylvan”, is centrally placed and is conceived as a literal distortion of the wood floor surface.
