Co-Educational National & International Boarding & Day School

About Villiers School Villiers School was founded in 1821 and is located in Limerick, in the southwest of Ireland. Villiers is a co-educational boarding and day school, catering for approximately 600 students between the age of 12 and 18. Villiers is proud to offer both local and international students the opportunity to be part of a challenging international educational environment in a modern and distinctively Irish setting. Approximately 10-15% of our student body are international. In the academic year 2019/2020, Villiers was home to students from 34 countries. As an English speaking school in an English speaking country, in order to promote language immersion and cultural integration within the student body, we limit the number of students we enroll from each language/cultural group each year. We aim to embrace the richness that diverse languages and cultures add to a school and so, we also offer an extensive range of languages including Irish, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. Having a culturally diverse student body from Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania ensures that

international-mindedness is at the heart of the Villiers’ experience. Time spent in Villiers provides opportunities to learn individual responsibility and respect as part of a school environment which is at once both local and global, and where each unique individual is acknowledged and recognised as part of an interdependent community where difference is cherished. Villiers is one of only four schools in Ireland authorised to offer the prestigious and challenging International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Soon-to-be the only English-speaking country in post-Brexit Europe, Villiers is Ireland’s only IBDP boarding school and offers packages for both boarding and day students. In December 2018, Villiers School had an independent review carried out by the Irish Department of Education. The outcome was a glowing endorsement of our School and community. TY is an opportunity to take stock, explore new and different ways of learning, to expand the learning environment beyond the school walls into the wider community and the world of work, and to lay a secure foundation for more mature decision making for the future. The programme consists of core subjects, choice subjects, modules and projects. Outdoor pursuits include

hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, sailing, archery, high ropes, surfing and more. There are also guest lectures, a fashion show, a drama production, work experience, and a week-long trip to Achill Island. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

V

illiers is one of only four schools in Ireland to offer the IBDP, an internationally recognised alternative to the traditional Irish Leaving Certificate. The IBDP at Villiers School is the senior course of the IB programme. The DP is a two year programme and open to applications from students aged 1618. The benefits of this programme, apart from its academic rigour, are that it is transferable from country to country and school to school, so we can facilitate students who want to explore a different culture, for one or two years, or indeed for families relocating to Ireland.

Entry Requirements For direct entry to our IBDP, international students must demonstrate proficiency in English (Level B2 CEFR minimum) and Mathematics. Those students whose level of English or Mathematics is not of a sufficient standard are encouraged to participate in our ITY (pre-IB) programme.    Prospective IBDP students will be invited to interview with the Headmistress and/or the DP Coordinator to determine their suitability for the course and to discuss the subject options available to them. Students may be asked to demonstrate core competencies for individual subjects prior to admission to the IBDP.

A team of dedicated ‘English as an Additional Language’ (EAL) teachers provide individual and small-group language tuition, dependent on students’ individual needs. Exam preparation for Cambridge English Qualifications is also offered.

International Admissions

I

n general, we do not consider applications for less than one full academic year. Exceptions to this are outlined as follows: Suitable applicants who wish to apply for only Semester 1 (August – December) will be placed on a waiting list and contacted in July if a place becomes available. Suitable applicants who wish to apply for only Semester 2 (January – May) may do so after October 1st and places will be allocated based on availability.

I

n the event of oversubscription, a waiting list of suitable and qualified candidates will be drawn up. Qualified applicants will be admitted on a “first come/first served basis as space becomes available, if and when the individual needs of each candidate can be met.

Health Insurance

P

lease note that prospective students from within the European Union should apply for the European Health Insurance Card prior to them coming to Ireland. This insurance will allow the holder to access health care services when travelling to another EU or EEA country. See http://www.hse.ie/eng/ services/list/1/schemes/EHIC/visitors/ for further information.

Guardianship and Boarding Options

I

n Villiers we offer a choice of fortnightly boarding or weekly boarding - this means: • Fortnightly boarding The boarding house is open to students every second weekend where there is a full program of activities. The boarding house is closed every other weekend. On these ‘closed weekends’ students stay with host families and some students stay with their host families during mid-term breaks. The students leave campus on Friday after School and return the following Sunday evening for class on Monday. International students usually choose the fortnightly boarding option. • Weekly boarding Students go home or stay with a host family every weekend. The students leave campus every Friday after School and return on Sunday evening for class on Monday.

For overseas parents/guardians with no prior connection with Ireland, and with no local guardian in place, a professional guardian agency is essential to assist with the general well-being of the student and all of our international students are required to have an Irish resident guardian while studying in Villiers. In effect, guardians act in loco parentis. We have developed links with a local educational guardianship agency, who you will need to contact for costings and further information on same - their details are: Nora Gallagher Guardianship Ireland (ISGI) Tel: +353 85 7224273 Email: isgi@bwe.ie Web: https://www.guardianshipireland.ie/
