The design site, Piazzale C.Maciachini is located on the boarder of historical ring of Milan. The area is mainly occupied with buildings of residential function and is really well connected to the ceneter with the dense transport network consisting of severeal metro stations on the Piazzalle of the yellow line M3, a tram line which flows to the north of Piazzale and several bus lines.

As good accessibility is an advantage it is also a down side, creationg hectic enviroment around piazzale which decreses the value of the site as a public space. There area several typologies of urban blocks in the area, but most common is the along the edge buildings which for the activity of the streets. which is common to the uraban planning with in the Beruto Ring - Historical center. We envisioned to create additional activities on the piazzale as mentioned it is not used as a public space though it has a big potential there is a school to the north of the site, which is a good indicator for creating activities for children.

Housing on Navigli Martesana

Inclusive housing as a driver of equitable urban regeneration 1st year Urban Design Studio |Proff. Alessandro Coppola, Valentina Brambila Collaboration with Martina Bianchini, Aleksandre Gachechiladze

The 2nd municipality of Milan previously city periphery and later industrial hub, went through various changes forming socially and environmentally diverse and dynamic area. The neighborhood has always been socially diverse, even though micro-segregation processes limited social interaction. Nevertheless, until the 1970s it was basically characterized as a working-class neighborhood. Recently, new middle-class residents have entered – in addition to the existing base – the first signs of a new gentrification process are visible. Thus, the neighborhood is characterized by a clear and renewed social and functional mix.Another aspect emphasizing diversity in 2nd municipality is strong social network of LBTQ communities. Socio-Demographic Data 2nd Municipality

Municipality 2 has the highest number of foreigners in Milan with 29,43%. As this data highlights diversity in municipality it can also be understood as a social change that is not taking place evenly throughout the city. As shown by the large body of literature, the area has experienced the media attention and stigmatization over the last decade. The area is well connected, being crossed by important metro lines, railway and road routes bridging the city centre with the north-eastern hinterland. To analyze data connected to the inhabitants we used infographic portraits on demography. From which it is worth mentioning that average age in second municipality is 43 for man and 46 for woman but in the future the number of younger (15-34) demographic cohort is predicted to increase (Istat date 2018. According census 2011 higher education level is 21 % lower and unemployment rate in the municipality is 18% higher compared to the whole city.

Site is located in the northern part of the 2nd Municipality in the Nil Adriano along canal Martesana and close to via Padova on via Privato Antonio Meucci . The site has been considered as a perfect spot for inclusive housing and urban regeneration, because of highly decayed environment and non-urban character but huge potential for future development. West from our site is an area dominated by multi story residential buildings, height of which varies from 3 to 8 floors. They occupy a vast area and create in-between spaces used for parking, recreation, playgrounds, and sports. In the are there are also 2 public parks which aren’t easily accessible and lack activity. And despite the fact that via Ponte Nuovo is quite active there are no many services in the section between streets Ponte

Nuovo and via Adriano. Cargo huge retail center is an exception. 2nd area is in the east from our site, there we meet mostly raw houses, the height of which varies from 2 to 4 floors. Compared to 1st area the street is narrower, which creates a more comfortable environment for human scale. These typologies are mostly residential; Area also lacks activities and during night time there are no people in the streets which makes the atmosphere unsafe. THREE COMPLEMENTARY BASES 1

CONNECTIVE BASIS Development of two axes, one of which includes existance of additional bridge on Navigli Martesana. It enables connection of a busy and active street Via Padova to the site, creating several active public spaces ending at Siemens park which is a green area with the 23 ha of space. The second axis serves as the green path connecting the bank of Martesana canal to the neighbouring green spaces, activating left bank of the canal, which is not used.

2

URBAN REGENERATION BASIS INCLUSIVE HOUSING Design concept includes development of inclusive housing, which incoroporates having population of different social class, age and professional occupation, togather with residential buildings, improved are public spaces along the connective axes, making site inviting and appealing for public residing in NIL Adriano and the second municipality of Milan.

3

CULTURAL BASIS Maintained buildings on the site give the possibility of developing the mediathek, exhibition space, working spaces and the art residence. According to statistics the ratio of the educated people in 2nd municipality is lower than in other municipalities in Milan, we wanted to address this problem by developing a cultural hub and a network of art residences in Milan. It will represent a non formal educational center which is open for all-kinds of public.

“Housing on Martesana” is a model project which analyses the typical scenario in the second municipality vast territory of vacant site and sites occupied by underused or abandoned industrial typologies. Project uses methodology of reuse and renovation for the regeneration of existing physical capital. Vacant sites, abandoned or underused buildings in decay are reused to improve overall quality of the infrastructure. In addition, by the spatial intervention creating 2 new axis and number of public spaces it connects existing environmental assets and creates larger network in the second municipality. New connections from Via Padova to the Siemens Orti park and Martesana park are created also incorporating smaller green spaces in the network. Project responds to the overall demands and trends in the second municipality creating spaces for increasing creative class and young population.

On a smaller scale environmental asset are utilized and developed. Existing forestated vacant site is developed as a park and connected to the existing small park nearby (on the via del Ricardo) which is not particularly active, on the other side Siemens park is located. Trough this action huge green island is created in the neighborhood (approximately the same size as Parco Trotter). This island will also connect the site to the existing residential neighborhood in the west. Currently Siemens Park is gated and is meant only for Siemens employees, although we envision that after regeneration of the neighborhood it will be open for the larger public. Another vacant site near Martesana is used for urban farming and is also highlighted as a space for urban farming on PGT document. As there is a trend of farming settlements

Temporary Housing on Piazzale Archinto st 1 year Construction and Sustainibility Studio |Proff. Massimiliano Nastri

Site is located in Piazzale Archinto in Isola district, the project purpose was to develop temporary housing for immigrants. I wanted to design the hous which would me easy to expanded if needed and easy to assamble, another key point was to design a temporaray housing which doesnot seem to have qoalities of short-term lived space. The temporary housing is has a wooden structure and brick veneer serves as an envelope. The structure is made of steel circular shape tubes which are easily assambled with fittings. The plant highlights the sustainable purpose of the structure and improves the life quality of temporary dwelling

RENOVATION OF XXc. RESIDENTIAL BUILDING Zubalashvilebi st., Tbilisi, Georgia Professional work NEO-A

The site is located in the old part of Tbilisi, this ditrict was constructed in the early XX century. The site is an architectural monument protected by the ministery of culture of georgia. The building used to be a residential four storied house . each floor was owned by different individual. the clinets desire was to transform the house into small apartments for rent, and to arrange an additioanal floor for the office space. The additional floor supposed to ocupate the most of the floor area. because of this is an old part of Tbilisi the streets are relatively narrow and a person walking from the street would not know the existance of the additional floor. One of the requests of the client was to make a structure which will be visible from the street and it would show that the site was renovated. Thus we tried to move the additional floor stucture to the direction of the Zubalashvilebi street, nevretheless the height of parapet was covering the structure. We even tried to make the front elevation higher than the rest of the model, but it did not work for the existing building as it was too massive.

56

(1) Concept Diagrams

The other issue was to develop the shape of the roof, our first take was to make consealed flat roof. The city hall board responsible for historic heritage monuments recommended us to keep the shape of the original roof . So we kept the original shape of the roof but turned it upside down . In process we started to think about the space we are creating for the office workers of the additional floor, although we were asked to occupy the whole area, we did not resist to make a green terace for the peaceful rest during busy day and we agreed with the client the greenery will make the renovation even more observable. The terace needs the cover to make it exploatable in the bad weather, so we thought of the cover design, and simply noticed that the terace cover was the only structure visible from the street level, thus we wanted to design something modern and daring as we thought of green terace we decided to add a reflective material to the to the canopy to reflect the greenery from the terace.
