with myself With myself is an interactive exhibition that allows individuals the chance to reflect on the time they spend on their own. The works in this exhibition also challenge people to undertake social tasks that are commonly done with another individual or in groups l i.e. going to the movies. With myself is completely text and task based so that people may construe their own ideas on the work and fill out information that relates to themselves. Every project has been screen printed with the exception of one piece. The reasoning for this physical application is to address the unique nature of an individual and the way they choose to spend time on their own. The goal of with myself is to open up dialogue on the distractions of today and the social stigma attached to undertaking “shared tasks with yourself.

Semester 1

Project Direction At the beginning of the semester I had a hard time trying to figure out what my thesis topic was going to be. Free writing was a task we undertook quite often in the first few weeks of the course, I found this helpful and adopted it into my own daily routine. This practice allowed me to explore big ideas and topics that were of interest to me. I chose to focus my year long term on the topic of “Solitude. Through my research and free writing I also made the decision to make my exhibition an interactive experience.

Visual Research Through my visual research I was able to find images relating to solitude. This helped to shape my perspective on the idea and fuel ideas for my future design proposals and concepts. I was able to digest all of this visual research into five categories: words, graphics, places, traditional and people. The two categories that stood out most to me and helpful influence my concepts were words and people.

Semester 1 – Written Research

Written Research Using free writing as an outlet to understand my though process and generate ideas was helpful in deciding my thesis topic. However, I did also conduct digital and physical research to find more information on my topic. Written articles were the most abundant throughout my research. I did however find a few podcasts and blogs that were quite insightful. In addition to this research I also spoke to quite a few friends and family members about their experiences with solitude. I found this type of research to be the most valuable to me. My written research is made up of a handful of blogs and online articles about solitude. The main concept around each of these written texts is the idea of distinguishing solitude from isolation and how to spend time alone with yourself. I found this very engaging for myself as I was struggling to figure out what my intention was, and upon reading these texts it became clear that I wanted to focus on distinguishing solitude as a healthy form of mental health and reinforce it as an everyday task. One conclusion I have drawn from this research is a need to experiment with my own solitude by doing various activities in solitude ie. Coffee, having a meal, going to the movies.

09

2D My visual research consisted of a wide variety of images of paintings, drawings, landscapes, text and graphics. The majority of my research fell into the category of landscapes, these photos in particular gave me a sense of emotional solitude. Many of the images I found consisted of a singular focal point which amplified the definition of solitude. The imagery either featured one person or object or it featured one person or object standing out from several people/objects. From this observation I understood solitude to be at peace with yourself.

Design Proposals

Design Proposal 1: A Map of Solitude The goal of “A Map of Solitude is to create a visual line drawing that illustrates points of preferred solitude. The intention of this proposal is to investigate location and emotion in regards to solitude. The map will serve to create a visual understanding of my interactions with being alone. This map will be constructed from two main modules: line drawing and still photography. This will be completed mainly in black and white; colour will be used to express significance and/or importance. This map will be presented in an elongated format to visually represent a journey. During my visual research I came across a very detailed line drawing of a map that illustrated an individual’s journey from where they explored to where they liked to doodle. This graphical map inspired my idea to create a map of solitude. I would have liked to explore different types of line drawing to enhance my map.

Semester 1 – 2D

Design Proposal 2: Solitudes of Type The goal of “Solitudes of Type” is to create a two-dimensional interactive experience. “Solitudes of Type” will be a series of posters that illustrate the emotion of solitude using typography. These posters will all use typography created by using a letterpress machine. Each poster will have heavy and condensed typography and slowly become just one letter. The embossing of the type will encourage people to interact with the textures to experience solitude amongst a crowd. During my visual research I came across a few graphical representations of standing out in a crowd which informed my decision to create these posters that can be experienced. To encourage interactivity even further I would not display these posters up on a wall but rather at waist-level on a table to allow full accessibility. I would have liked to explore different type sizes and weights for more variation.

15

Design Proposal 3: Pick Me/Try Me The goal of “Pick Me/Try Me” is to encourage doing everyday activities in solitude. The intention of this project to is explore and understand feelings of solitude in everyday life. During my written research solitude was explained as something not a lot of people paid attention to and in my visual research I found that it was highlighted as always being alone in an empty room. This project will attempt to change both of those ideas. I will create a circular “poster”, which will have various activities listed on it and once spun an individual must complete that task in solitude. This poster will be constructed of mirrored, clear acrylic, and dye cuts. I want to use the mirrored acrylic for the surface of the poster to encourage those interacting with it to reflect on themselves. I would have liked to work with materials to be able to test out any complications.

Semester 1 – 3D

3D My 3D research contained assorted materials and textures. I explored types of acrylic, wood, paper textures/weight, and different finishing techniques. During my research I found that my topic is not defined by a specific type of material. Because of this observation I also explored different techniques with lighting, engraving into materials, and several styles of packaging. After revisiting my goals/intention I found it was very valuable to research sound, and meditation. In addition to this I researched and found that one of my most challenging intentions is to experience solitude within a busy environment. This research informed how I exhibit my work at GradEx, I chose to use experience and 3D objects to create an atmosphere where people can understand and experience solitude.

19

20

Semester 1 – 3D

Design Proposals DIBY (Do it by yourself) The goal of this project is to create a “guide to solitude. Its purpose is to encourage people to embrace solitude. During my ongoing written/visual research, I found that solitude was categorized as a negative or sad practice. In addition to this, the amount of distractions that present themselves every day make it hard for people to take time for themselves, or even prevent them from knowing how to. Instead of providing people with physical objects, this kit will be text and task based. I will create written tasks to get individuals actively thinking about spending time alone as well as written notes to encourage mindfulness. The guide will be constructed with the aesthetic of a general DIY kit. However, it will be made from frosted or mirrored acrylic in the form of a cube. I have chosen frosted or mirrored acrylic because both materials do not allow the individual to see inside which rouse curiosity.

21

Your Platform The goal of Your Platform is to create a physical space without raising a wall. This concept was heavily informed by my research in designing my allotted space at GradEx. The purpose of this project is to create a tailored space to experience my exhibition while being separate from the other people/exhibitions around it. Instead of creating a room with walls for my exhibition, which would speak more to isolation, I will be using the ground to differentiate my work. Using either a thick carpet-like fabric, wood, or acrylic I will create an alternate flooring to use instead of the existing carpeted floor. One of the most challenging aspects of my research was finding a way to create the experience of solitude in a busy environment such as GradEx. This concept will allow individuals to feel elevated from the immense crowd and allow them to experience my work in solitude.

Semester 1 – 3D

Your Reflection The goal of this project is to allow individuals to question their relationship with themselves and how much time they make for themselves. During my ongoing written research, I found many individuals struggled with the idea of solitude as a positive channel. This project will act as an introduction to my work around experiencing solitude at GradEx. This form will be created out of a mirrored material and will have a statement or question engraved into it. I have chosen to use a mirrored material to create an emphasis on personal reflection and to demonstrate that one can experience solitude and mindfulness amongst a crowd. During the creation of this concept I have found that the engraved written component needs to be further developed to entice viewers and create an impression.

25

4D To begin my 4D research I wrote down specific qualities I wanted to investigate: music, calming sounds, beautiful imagery, soothing atmosphere, motivation, mindfulness and habits. When searching for apps and websites that offered these things I found numerous sound apps. I also further investigated the app I currently use “Rain, Rain” which plays different rain sounds at varied volumes. During my research I also explored different mediation apps and websites to broaden my concept outcomes. I downloaded and have been using “Headspace” a guided meditation tool to help individuals find their right headspace.

Design Proposals Sound Space The goal of this project is to create an app that will allow individuals to experience a moment of peacefulness in any situation. This app will play only sounds from nature. Users will be able to alter the volume at which tracks play and combine sounds together to create their own personal track. The app will also allow users to set timers for how long a track will play. Sound Space will only work when the user enables the airplane mode function on their phone. This one key feature is what will distinguish my app from other nature sound apps. The purpose of this app is to allow people to create their own solitude using sound.

Semester 1 – 4D

Mindful Motivator The goal of this project is to design an app that will function to help people manage and create alone time with themselves. As previously mentioned, my ongoing written research has provided me with a wealth of knowledge on the struggle of spending time alone with yourself. The social stigma behind doing things alone is very present right now and this app will begin to address and fight that. The purpose of this app will be to schedule time with yourself once daily and to indulge in various activities that are seen as more social rather than solitary. During my research I came across one quote that helped create this concept, “If you truly want to do something, why should the prospect of doing it alone be an obstacle to your will?”

31

32

Semester 1 – 4D

Immersed Ink The goal of this project is to create an immersive video accompanied by sound to allow individuals to experience a positive atmosphere. This video will feature ink or another similar product, being released into water. There will be multiple layers of ink dropping filmed. This will be presented on a computer and accompanied with music to highlight the experience. The purpose of this project remains the same as one of my 3D concepts, to create a solitary experience amongst a busy crowd.

Semester 1 – Silk Screening

Silk Screening During my first semester I had the opportunity to take an introductory silk screening course where I was able to learn the basic techniques of this practice. Through this course I was able to explore form and colour and complete projects that would inform one of my final deliverables. After completing this course I made the decision to silk screen the majority of my final outcomes.

35

Solitude Print This work was created using background text that I took from written research in the first few weeks of the semester. Then I silk screened another layer on research on top of the first. After this I laser cut a quote I had been working with on top of the background text.

Semester 1 – Silk Screening

End of Semester 1

After the first semester I created nine design proposals to choose from and develop for my final deliverables. I plan to exhibit 4 concepts for GradEx, the first two focus on interaction and the second two focus on the experience. The first is from my 2D project, the Pick Me/Try Me concept was imagined as a wheel fabricated from mirrored acrylic. The goal behind this project is to have people spin the wheel and receive a task which they would have to complete alone. As I have further developed and re-visited my intentions throughout the semester I have decided to reinvent the wheel. This concept will be existing in the form of a challenge, there will be a station where individuals will be prompted to receive a slip of paper that will have a task they must complete alone. The second concept that I plan to include also focuses on interaction. My solitude kit from project 3D will also be reinvented to function as a take-away piece. There will still be a box made from frosted/mirrored material but it will house tasks that must be completed at my exhibit. The third concept I will include at GradEx is the Platform from my 3D concepts. This concept begins to create the experience I outline in my intention. The last concept I plan to include is the Reflection mirror, which also helps to create the experience I am designing. 39

TODO Offsite Festival At the beginning of the year I participated in the TODO Offsite exhibition with four other classmates and the Industrial Design thesis class. This opportunity helped my understanding of curating and kick-started my planning for GradEx. I was also able to get a head start on designing rough layouts for my take-aways. During this time I also developed the name of my exhibition.

40

Semester 1 – TODO Offsite Festival

41

The TODO Offsite Festival helped me develop the final name of my thesis exhibition and inspired me to create new take-aways which informed my designs for my final deliverables at GradEx. I was able to experiment with peoples interactions at the festival and use this research to apply for my final work.

Semester 2

Refined Proposals DIBY (Do it by yourself) The goal of this project is to create an interactive activity to encourage people to embrace and understand solitude. Throughout my research thus far I have come to the conclusion that solitude is seen as a negative and sad practice. People often mistake spending time in solitude to mean that of loneliness. My intention is to change this notion by creating print pieces for individuals to fill out at GradEx and take them away to serve as a reminder. DIBY consists of three different print pieces that all centre around investing time in yourself.

44

Semester 2 – Refined Proposals

The first piece will exist in the form of a checklist. This is to have people begin to actively think about how many places they have been to alone. The second piece will be a parody of going on a date. The paper will consist of the top 5-10 places to take someone on a date. It will ask the individual to simply pick the one that is most appealing them, then challenge themselves to go complete the activity alone. The final piece is designed to generate different activities for people to accomplish on their own. I will design and print over 20 different options and assemble them into a dispensing mechanism. This execution will ensure that no two people at my exhibit receive the same outcome. All of these pieces will be created digitally then executed through silk screening. The reasoning for this is to push and refine my print skills, and to create small precious pieces that will provoke people to hang onto. Using an analog method of presentation for my print pieces creates a more individualized experience.

45

Distractions The goal of this project is to create a large print piece to highlight the amount of distractions we receive from notifications each day. This poster will be 20 inches in height and 40 inches in length. The background will be a texture created out of text that is taken from social platforms that create distraction in our day (Facebook newsfeed, Twitter, Instagram, News articles, Texting). The information will be complied and formatted into text only and transformed in different ways to make it almost illegible. A quote/statement that summarizes my projects intention will be laser cut into the mess of distracting typography. Although the poster is white and will be hanging on a white wall the visibility of the carved type is not meant to stand out, it is meant to merely sit within the distractions. I will be designing this poster digitally in InDesign and then printing it large format. My first variation of this print was screen printed first then laser cut. However, the first variation was segmented into four pieces because of the restrictions I faced with my silk screens size. For my second variation I would like to explore the idea of creating one large poster instead of four smaller ones.

46

Semester 2 – Refined Proposals

A Reflection The goal of this project is to create an opportunity for people to question how they spend their time and if they are investing enough time in themselves. It also questions the relationship they have with themselves. This piece will be fabricated out of mirrored acrylic and the quote that will go with it will be engraved on the side using laser cutting. After using the first prototype of this mirror in a WIP gallery show I have found that my previous landscape format did not work as well. Hanging the mirror in the portrait orientation creates a more individualized effect. This project is meant to act as a supplementary piece to my main projects. It also gives the viewer a chance to stand back and focus on something other than the crowd at GradEx. This Space The goal of this project is to create a physical space without building a room. This concept was heavily informed by my research in designing my allotted space at GradEx. The purpose of this project is to create a tailored space for people to experience my projects while being separate from the crowd at GradEx. I want to create an experience that allows people to feel as if they are stepping into another space where they are free to explore and reflect.

47

Writing Workshop In the first few weeks of the second semester we had a writing workshop conducted for the class. This workshop allowed me to think of my work from a different perspective and also gain the perspective of others.

Task Dispenser At the ending of the first semester, one of my final deliverables was a challenge that would be dispensed to people to encourage them to do things on their own. During the first few weeks of the second semester I let that idea go and focused more on my other take-aways. However, it became quite apparent that the dispenser was needed in my body of work. I created a list of fun and different tasks and had it edited by my fellow peers, professor and friends.

Silk Screen Testing After I made the decision to silk screen my entire project I found the process to be very lengthy but rewarding. My process had to be very precise in order to capture the fine typographic details of my designs. Each piece was designed in InDesign then printed on inkjet film and then exposed onto my silkscreen. During my test printing process I happened to have some black paper around and I decided to test it out. This test turned out to inform my paper choice for every single piece I printed. I chose to use the black paper not only for its ability to have white ink printed onto it but because of the intimate nature that the colour presented.

Semester 2 – Exhibition Layout

Exhibition Layout The designs on the next two pages allow people to interact with my exhibition in a completely different sense. I have created an intimate space for people to walk into and explore my projects rather than walk straight up to the exhibition. The aerial view demonstrates that my table will be the furthest object away from the wall, allowing space for people to walk through and fill out my print pieces. The acrylic posters will hang on the wall opposite the table. The plinth will be the closest object to the wall to allow a space for people to walk into my space and get to the table.

Documentation The documentation of my work has been carefully considered to create a narration of my projects intention. I have decided to incorporate both studio and staged photography in order to document my work. My reasoning for this was to capture a specific setting and the way I expect people to interact with my work. For the checklist project I chose to incorporate the textures associated with each activity i.e. sand textured background to demonstrate going for a walk along the beach. I have also chosen to have some of my documentation include hand-held interaction to illustrate the size of my work as well as creating a personal setting. A few issues presented themselves while I was documenting my acrylic poster series and the engraved mirror, to solve this I used different light angles and a large piece of white foam board to amend the mirrors reflection.

Final Body of Work My final body of work is an accumulation of print and material to create a space for people to interact and challenge themselves to spend time on their own. With myself consists of a series of take aways which will encourage individuals to reflect how often and where they spend time on their own. Each black print piece has been duplicated over 500 times in order to generate interaction from as many people as possible. On Your Own is in the form of a checklist, there is a bold title at the top which poses the question, “What have you done on your own?” I chose to make this a checklist so that individuals will be able to physically check off places/activities they’ve done on their own.

Date Yourself is a piece that encourages people to make the time to spend on their own. The front of this piece prompts people to pick their idea of a fun and enjoyable date. There are common options listed to choose from, i.e. going to dinner, seeing a movie, exploring a park. After this they are prompted by a small arrow at the bottom to turn the print over. On the back is a bold statement saying “Date Yourself, below that I have provided space for a time a date to make a date with yourself.

A Task consists of 30 different tasks printed on small slips of square paper, which are loaded into an acrylic dispenser. People are invited to take a task from the dispenser then challenge themselves to complete it on their own. The prints are stacked in a specific order so that no two people at my exhibition will receive the same task.

Distraction is a poster series created by screen printing and laser cutting. There are four clear acrylic posters that have been screen printed with a text heavy background. The background text was generated using the filler text lorem ipsum and random article headlines found off of my Facebook newsfeed. I chose to use lorem ipsum to illustrate the amount of time individuals spend on social media platforms as a filler during the day. There is a quote written by myself that has been laser cut into the four posters. I chose to laser cut this because I want to encourage people to take time away for themselves and cut into the distractions of life.

Reflection is a poster made from mirrored acrylic. There is a quote written by myself engraved into the back which says, “Why should the thought of being on your own stop you from doing what you want?” The goal of this poster is to challenge the social stigma of doing communal activities on your own.
