K12 SCHOOL Chandanhola, Delhi

A K12 school was to be designed on the lal dora region of Delhi. The brief was to study and understand the locality and incorporate a education system along with the spaces required in the area programme for the school. The site is situated in the outskirts of the city, wedged in between the the residential colony of Chandanhola on one side and the farmlands of Chattarpur on the other.

Communicate

Experience The project is aimed at creating a learning environment that is aimed at creating stimuli in the form of spatial quality. The long linear site has been broken down into a variety of different spaces in the same level. The block accomodates a multi purpose hall in the split level equally accessible to all the students. To provide for the needs for students, individual breakout spaces within a cluster of classroom, also promotes interaction between students.

Vertical Zoning

Environment Sustainability

Form Development

Circulation Spaces

Zoning is done on both the vertical and horizontal axis. The vertical based on the occupancy state and the horizontal is based on the nature of spaces.

Horizontal punctures staggered along the main axis formed the major entrances to the building. This is merged with a heavy mass of structure which provides passive shading to inner parts of the structure

The massing is in the form of two parallels running along the site with puncture on either side alternatively so that wind can naturally flow into the open spaces within the school.

The linear nature of form resulted because of the linear nature of the site forming parallel classrooms. This was then punctured in the vertical axis making open to sky light wells, providing lighting to the interior spaces of the structure.

SECTION THROUGH AUDITORIUM

Site Plan

Section Multipurpose Hall The multi-purpose hall is located on the second floor of the school and is almost central to the school, mainly used for sports and meeting purposes. Sky light The roof is curved with partial skylight to allow natural light into it, while the separating walls are jaali to allow natural airflow. Also the facade is made of mechanised tensile structures which can control the opening size.

Physical model Auditorium Heavy mass places on the western corner of the structure blocks the major portion of the harsh sunlight falling on it, pseudo shading the other parts of the structure. Thus, the double skin to reduce air-conditioning loads. Central Library It is a double story space with mezzanine and open reading area cultivating reading habits in students, the space is a mixture of open and built spaces, giving different experiences in different places.

Classroom Detailing The classroom is supposed to accomodate 35 students. The classroom layout on the southern and northern are different. The southern classroom has extended balcony, which will also serve as a heat buffer space. A detailed analysis of sunlight penetration, the density of louvers and in last the lighting requirements of classroom is planned to optimize the learning environment.

Structural System

Open-roof System

Interaction Ground The cluster of classroom is seperated by common terraces that provide a breakout space for the students to be able to access much open environment. These spaces will have a planters and seating. The jaali work on the terrace will cast a unique shadow pattern on the terraces.

Auditorium Core

Children’s library Library

The structural system is mainly steel to account for easy joinery and prefabrication as the design employs multiple angles. The beams are fire proof encased I - section while the slabs are composite metal decking slab. While this is the case of the internal structure, the externally bracing is given which support the balcony and continue on to till the roof. The bracing will give additional stability to the building owing to the non-rectilinear internal structural system.

TRANSCENDENCE RIVERFRONT DEVELOPMENT Chandanagore, West Bengal The project was to propose a conceptual design for a river front public hub on the strand, chandanagore. The proposal was to include a mix of hospitality centres, tourism complex, shopping centre, heritage centre and a ferry point. Set in a heritage context, the site had to respond to the river on one side and the heritage complex on the other,

Formation of axis

Setting up niches

The site had a three main axis, all which had differnet purpose. The initial design had to integrate the spatial and the functional needs of the three axis. This made it easier for people to navigate around the site.

Identifying and emphasising the axis had formed two niche of complementary behaviour. The design intervention had to evolve the spaces. Functionaly these spaces were assigned as a open restaurant and a shopping complex

Secondary functions

Secondary functions like hotels and tourism centre were accomodated on one side of the site, while the ferry on the other. In the centre the gateway gently sloped down to the OAT on water.

Public spaces Finally to balance the different typology of spaces, a hierarchy of public spaces and utilities were organised within the site .

Visitor Centre

Garden and Landscape

Through the ferry ghat The ferry is the lifeline of people living in Chandanagore, and thus equal emphasis is given in design to integrate the regular services of people with tourism.

OAT view from gateway

Through the ghat

The axis through the ghat emphasises on catering to the tourists to the town. The axis starts with the heritage gateway and ends in the OAT which transcendence on to the river. On either side of the axis, variety of shops provide the comercial aspect of the hub.

HOMESTAY DESIGN Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh

The project was to design a homestay for the researchers and tourists visting the town of Chanderi. We were encouraged to build a site specific area programme and decide the typologies of spaces needed. We were also encouraged to understand the materials used and their impact on micro climate (partially derived from previous study) to decide the material palette for the design.

ARTIST STUDIO Nilgiri, Tamilnadu

The project was to design a residence and studio for a artist. This place was to be used as a vacation home for the artist and also for creating new artworks.

Emphasis was on learning client specific. In this project we had to study and understand an artist. Document and analyse his life, proceeding to formulate a client chart. Further study of anthropometry revealed the space requirements.

S.H. RAZA

Plan Lvl +800

The paintings of S.H. Raza revolve mainly around nature and its various facets. He believes the Bindu (dot) to be the center of creation and existence and his works reflect this particular thinking. Even though the vibrancy of his paintings had become subtle later on in his career, the dynamism remained as alive as ever

Plan Lvl +4000

The project aimed at creating an residence inspired from the lives and artwork of the choosen artist led to spatial planning and layout based on the lifestyle of the artist while the massing of the structure and the facade were largely inspired from the artworks. To cater to it a uniquely angular studio with the view of the landscape flowing from the hill it is situated on.

Martian Aspiration

Part of the project was to enhance the experience of the pioneers more than a station of work to a level of home away from home. The design aims to create a community, keeping in mind the need for personal space.

The design competition was to propose a self sustaining complex of the first astronauts to land on mars. The design aimed at creating the complex to sustain itself energy and stock wise indefinitely

The entire structure was aimed at sustaining the micro-system. The mentrane was made of ice particles sandwiched between ETFE membranes. While the exterior stiched micro solar cells.

The lack of available material at Mars created the prospect of using 3D printed structure. The design aimed at integrating the mushroom column with the existing sub-structure of Mars.

For human colonization on mars requires the establishment of permanent base that potential of self-expansion, which are more safe, earthy and community oriented. The core concept of the design was inspired from the underground survival of ant in its constructed habitat, ‘ant hill’ . the tunnels, burrows, and underground free ways interconnect their lives easily. A large central opened space creates a courtyard which psychologically emotionally connects the inhabitants to earth.

Building the settlement under the Martian surface protects the survivors from the harsh weather and radiation. Fusing the green belts with the interconnected spaces, creating a self-produced central water body serves as a earthly retreat to the inhabitants.

Upper Plan Designing a level-oriented spaces helps in streamlining the resource flow, thus helps in creating community along the path in the near future. The whole setup in in the form of multiple modules which results in easier construction and setup.

LANDSCAPE TROPHY NASA

Ghazipur, New Delhi

The design was to take and analyse a piece of land neglected by the society and the government, and propose a suitable design which would integrate the needs of the society and bring it closer to the unused pockets of the city.

Site Plan The site choosen is the Ghazipur landfill where there has been unregulated piling of garbage, which had also led to a major accident. The entire site and the community of ragpickers around the site have been neglected and the general public avoids the place.

Section Through The Site

Landscape Interaction

Play Area Seatings Around The Site The ghazipur landfill was past due in maintance and lack of regulation has led to its misuse. To get people aware, the design proposed to build a memorial landscaped into the site showing the height of garbage that had been collected over the years.

The site had a abundance of kids playing around the site, in the garbage piling around. Playground and seating spaces around would get people to acknowledge the site and adress the needs of children.

Mandawa, Rajasthan

Mandawa is a town in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan in India. This town has been referred to as the “open art gallery of Rajasthan because the entire Shekhawati region and not just Mandawa is dotted with fascinating mansions (Havelis) that have lavishly painted walls. We set out to document 7 of the very main havelis that dotted the mandawa region, studying its various cultures and their lifestyles and in turn learning how it shaped their architecture.

The elevation was the prized in the rural area of chanderi, and the elevation to a large extent revealed the economic status of the residents. In the locality we studied there lived people involved in street vending and other small buisness.

Some variation can be observed within the elevations and the street edge is occupied by the smaller houses, as we progress deeper into a locality we observe deeper verandah with ornate design patterns on the elevation.
