Hello Readers!
We are all still navigating this year unraveled by the pandemic. Clearly it will take efforts by a majority of Americans to get the virus under control. It will not go away, but we can each make an effort to reduce its spread. Summertime at least offers opportunities to get outdoors and enjoy nature. There are many activities that can be done outdoors safely while maintaining sufficient distance. Schools are slated to open in different manners around the country and clearly will be a challenge for parents, teachers and all the support staff. Stay safe and in the meantime, if possible, support your small, local independent businesses.
Comments and Suggestions always welcome.

Words speak Gently protest slogans require Marketing not defunding
Why not NextGen Police? It is social media ready, catchy and makes people think, ok, I’m game, explain further. You don’t have to defend that slogan. Show up with the sign “Defund the Police” and half the country will clench their fists and look for a fight. Yeah, defund this, you lefty. See what I mean? Reforming the police means different things around the country, with variations for big cities and small towns. There are metropolitan areas that may actually need more police presence, while others may need to reduce the presence and redistribute the budgets as to affect community uplifting. Be smart. Persuasion is a golden skill. Show common people how you will improve their lives and they will respond. They don’t care about sloganeering. Protests are worthy, use them to meet like-minded folks and then organize. Change will have to come through the political process, namely elections. Get like-minded people elected and those ideas have a chance of becoming policy. Realize also that social change is a very slow process. You can instill new policies and rules, but can’t change hearts and minds instantly. That takes time. Social activists must also learn the trade of marketers. The only thing the slogan “Defund the Police” will accomplish is scare grandma, and grandma votes.
The Editor’s Desk by Samir Shukla
Everything in life is marketing, like it or not. Businesses spend considerable time and wealth on branding and marketing to persuade people to buy their stuff, use their services, take vacations with them. Focus groups are brought in to see if logos, slogans, advertising and marketing gimmicks help make their products more marketable and less intrusive. Political and social activists should focus their messages, just like marketers, and gather supporters to affect policy at local, statewide, and national levels. During the recent nationwide protests to address police brutality, an activist term, a marketing slogan of sorts, has become common. You see this everywhere. Defund the Police. It is one of the most self-defeating slogans I have ever heard. When all the variables are explained, the bottom line for what it means is reduce the police footprint, move resources to other community efforts, and bring in non-police experts for community uplifting. It’s essentially about reforming policing to meet contemporary needs and, especially, reducing racial violence, albeit it must be fine-tuned for each location. So why not just reframe the messaging for that? This may not be sexy, but the idea is to get the message across and create road rage 2020: Volume 11 change. Come up with simple points to explain your ideas of the continuing madness of american politics transforming the police, gear them to the average person and then organize to make those points become policy. Conventions time The problem with “Defund the Police” is that it requires The hour of the 2020 national political conventions has constant explaining and, more importantly, defending. The arrived. Not with a bang, but a virtual whimper. The average person will look at that and think you want to reduce conventions for this election are going to be unlike any other in or eliminate police. It may resonate with angry protesters, but it’s just poor choice of words for much-needed reform and ways continued on page 56 to improve policing and community outreach. Saathee.com

Dancing with the Stars Remembering Choreographer Saroj Khan and Actor Sushant Singh Rajput My Voice by Shivani Tripathi Hindi cinema has again witnessed the loss of two film personalities, iconic choreographer Saroj Khan and icon in the making, actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Both artists, who started their careers with no connections to the film industry, made a name for themselves through their hard work and perseverance. Nirmala Nagpal took the screen name Saroj when she became a background dancer in movies as a way to support her family, which migrated from Pakistan during partition. After spending years as a dance assistant, Khan finally became an independent choreographer, or what was then called a Masterji, sixteen years after entering the industry. Cited as the first female choreographer of Hindi cinema, Khan received much appreciation for her ability to make heroines appear irresistible. After 1988’s smash hit song “Ek Do Teen” from the film Tezaab, there was no looking back for her. I’ve always wondered whether Khan had an idea of how many people around the world learned to dance from her. Through her choreography, Saroj Khan helped my friends and I express pure joy and exhilaration. I fondly in dancing remember basements with my little sister and childhood friends to songs that were immensely popular in the 90s, such as “Mere Haathon Mein Nau Nau”, “Channe Ke Khet Mein”, “Meri Banno Ki Aayegi Baraat” and many more. The heady mix of melody, choreography and beauty was a template of Indian femininity we could relate to more than what we witnessed on popular American films and television programs. We also did couples dances such as “Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen” but the heroine solo dance number was the most beloved. During this time Khan and actress Madhuri Dixit became one of the most iconic duos in Hindi cinema and undoubtedly helped each other achieve greatness in their respective fields. Friends and I would anxiously await news of their collaborations and in the pre-social media world, would find out through film magazine and trailers embedded in VHS tapes and audio cassettes, when their film would release. Khan and Dixit being mentioned in an ad meant the song would be our next obsession and, therefore, our next performance at a function. Saathee.com
Even if there was no big occasion in the coming months, we would mimic their moves in our rooms and in front of bathroom mirrors. In a recent social media post dedicated to Khan, Dixit said, “Nobody can make women look so beautiful, desirable & sensuous on-screen like her. She made everything look like poetry in motion.” As children we didn’t quite grasp the meaning of sensuality but through imitating their hook steps, Khan and Dixit taught us it meant expressing self-love, self-appreciation through dance. When Khan choreographed, the woman danced for her own enjoyment and anyone else’s judgment was secondary. With the advent of global channels and second-generation filmmakers opting for more western sensibilities, meaning more jazz and fewer jhatkas, Saroj Khan’s dynamic style of Indian classical-folk-filmi was no longer in demand like it once was. Yet Khan continued to be the favorite of so many and as adults, when friends and I would go to “Bollywood Nights” in New York City clubs, her songs would make us squeal in glee. We would rush to the dance floor and again dance in delight like we did as kids growing up in the suburbs of North Carolina. Khan wasn’t Masterji only for those in cinema, but also for many like us who admired her work thousands of miles away from the movie studios of Mumbai. While the passing of the 71-yearold choreographer left many feeling like they witnessed the end of an era, the sudden loss of 34-yearold Hindi film actor Sushant Singh Rajput left many in shock and disbelief. It was not that long ago that Rajput entered the world of entertainment. My Nani and mother introduced me to the actor through the teleserial Pavitra Rishta around 2010 and I knew better than to call them while the show was playing. When visiting home, I would catch glimpses of Rajput’s impressive dancing on the dance reality show, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on which he was a contestant. In my family, Rajput was seen as an impressive talent and as someone who deserved bigger and better opportunities. The 2013 Hindi feature film Kai Po Che!, which was both a critical and commercial success, marked Rajput’s entry into Hindi cinema. He would act in ten additional movies over a seven-year span and played diverse characters from an inexperienced yet sharp detective, to Indian cricketer M.S. continued on page 94 22

Darjeeling Darjeeling is located in the northern part of West Bengal state. It is situated about 305 miles north of Kolkata (Calcutta), at an elevation of about 7,000 feet. The popular tourist destination is noted for its tea industry, its views of Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tea, after water, is the most popular drink on the planet. Tea produced in Darjeeling is renowned as the “the champagne of teas,” with a distinctive light brew. The city was ceded by the king of Sikkim to the British in 1835 and was developed as a sanatorium for British troops. It was constituted a municipality in 1850. Soon, tea plantations were established in the region and tea growers developed hybrids of black tea and created new fermentation techniques. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway connects the town with the plains and has some of the few steam locomotives still in service in India. The name of the city means “Place of the Thunderbolt.” The peak tourism season is between April to June and September to November. Observatory Hill, the town’s highest point is crowned by Mahakal Temple, which is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. Darjeeling has several British-style private residential schools, which attract pupils from all over India. Lesser Himalayas, where Darjeeling is situated, receives plentiful rainfall and has a wide range of climates, from tropical to subalpine, owing to its varying elevations. The local economy is heavily based on the production of black tea, made possible by climatic conditions that are particularly suited for tea growing. The varied culture of the town reflects its diverse demographic comprising Lepcha, Khampa, Gorkha, Newar, Sherpa, Bhutia, and Bengali. Saathee.com

USA Knowledge Appalachian Mountains The Appalachian Mountains, often called the Appalachians, are a system of mountains in eastern North America that first formed 480 million years. The range, in eastern USA, covers an almost unbroken area, over 1500 miles long and often a couple hundred miles wide. The Appalachians include the Appalachian Trail, which runs about from Georgia to Maine and is the world’s first and most famous long-distance hiking path. Many through-hikers traverse the trail every year, taking several months to complete. Some Appalachian towns, including Asheville, North Carolina, and Gatlinburg, Tennessee, are well-established outdoor and tourist destinations. Mainly due to their prime locations on either side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, America’s most-visited. Grandfather Mountain near Linville, NC, at 5,946 feet is the highest peak on the eastern escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, one of the major chains of the Appalachians. Whitewater rafting is among the rising outdoor sports popular at several junctures in the Appalachians. Hiking, camping, rock climbing, boating and fishing are also widely popular. Coal mining in the Appalachians remains a major economic activity, especially in West Virginia and Kentucky. The Appalachians once reached elevations similar to those of the Alps and the Rocky Mountains before experiencing natural erosion. The Appalachian chain creates a natural barrier to east–west travel. They are the only significant topography in all of eastern North America, an otherwise flat expanse. With only a few minor scattered exceptions, the entire range of the Appalachian Mountains is cloaked in deep, thick, dense forest. Saathee.com

Anti-Inflammatory Diet gets red and swollen. This indicates that the body is producing certain inflammatory hormones and chemicals that help fight the added stress and promote healing.
Nutrition for Life by Parul Kharod
• Chronic inflammation When the body keeps producing these pro-inflammatory chemicals, it results in chronic inflammation. over time, these extra chemicals act as a slow poison that affects various systems in the body. Chronic inflammation has also been associated with allergies, asthma, autoimmune diseases like fibromyalgia, arthritis, and stroke.
The term “anti-inflammatory diet” has become popular in the last few years. Sometimes it is used interchangeably with the Mediterranean diet. Different people have their own versions of what an anti-inflammatory diet is. Most health professionals advocate for it. We have to understand what inflammation is and what the causes of inflammation are to follow a true anti-inflammatory diet.
What factors trigger chronic inflammation? • Excess body fat, especially adipose tissue in the abdominal area, can produce pro-inflammatory response. • Excessive sugar intake can cause impaired insulin function. • Elevated blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugars, all create an immune response causing chronic inflammation. • Sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diets promote weight gain and thus chronic inflammation.
inflammation Constant inflammation in the body is proving to be the cause of various chronic health problems. Cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders have been linked to uncontrolled silent inflammation in the body.
How is inflammation measured? Since inflammation is a response by the body’s immune cells, a blood test can be done to measure the level of these cells to gauge the amount of chronic inflammation in the body. The most common blood test for this is called high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP).
there are two main types of inflammation - acute and chronic:
• acute inflammation Acute means short term. Inflammation is the body’s natural response to stress and injury. When you stub your toe, it

DIVINITY The concept of divinity is a great paradigm and framework to combat depression and bring happiness.
Rajeev’s Corner by Rajeev Aggerwhil
A few years ago, when I was living in the Washington DC area, I picked up a couple of passengers for carpool, commonly referred to as slugs, near the Springfield metro in Virginia. The system is designed to facilitate carpool access. one day, I picked up a lady and a gentleman. We didn’t really talk much. After we dropped the gentleman off, she asked me where I was from and she shared with me that she had been to India. Then she made this rather politically incorrect statement. She said, “All Hindus will go to hell if they don’t believe Jesus Christ died for their cause.” And I was thinking if all Hindus go to hell, she could expect to get a customer support service call from hell. Saathee.com
I started thinking how Mahatma Gandhi would react to her statement. What were his views about religion? I found a quote by Gandhi: “I consider myself a Hindu, Christian, Moslem, Jew, Confucianist and Buddhist.” He also said, “My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God. Non-violence is the means of realizing Him.” I am sure Gandhi would have even managed to embrace some good principles from Scientology! Gandhi led India to its independence from the British after 200 years of tyrannical rule using principles of civil disobedience and total non-violence. Although he never held any political office he is considered by the Indians as the father of the nation. Some historians say that the genius of Gandhi was that he realized the British were not evil, and he used their own principles of morality, religion and law to make them understand that they were just misguided. I think that’s a fairly accurate statement. I am going to extend that a bit more. I think Gandhi realized that the British people were not evil but more importantly he realized that there is an innate goodness in every human being. There is divinity in every human being. He was also a meditator. I have been meditating for more than 20 years under the blessings and guidance of my spiritual master. one of the fundamental principles of meditation is that you tend to see God, the miracle of God in everybody. It may be a difficult concept to accept. If you start meditating on that one single thought, day after day, year after year - it will have a profound impact on every single action in your life. Now, I am not quite there. I have witnessed the birth of my children, so I know that concept of divinity is a bit ephemeral. By the time my children reached the age of thirteen, I stopped seeing the divinity and started seeing the devil in them. Gandhi’s faith in nonviolence became conviction. It is evident in the quote: “An eye for an eye would make whole world blind.” Because of his conviction, his principles got applied in the civil rights movement in India as well as in South Africa, where the change from the apartheid regime took place without too much bloodshed or violence. continued on page 80 42

Mango Custard Lassi
RECIPES
The scorching sun, the unbearable heat... one of the things that come to mind during summer months is lassi, a popular drink in the Indian subcontinent and beyond. Lassi is mainly a blend of yogurt, water, spices, and to add value to it, some fruit. To give it a bit of twist, I tried custard lassi with mango flavor. It is often served to guests as a refreshment drink. Ice is added to give it a milkshake-like consistency apart from cooling it. Recipe by Renaissa Ghosh
Ingredients 2 cups whole milk for custard 1/2 cup sugar
Directions 1
3 Tbsp plain or mango custard powder
2
4 Tbsp whole milk for custard powder
3
8 ice cubes
4
2 mangoes 1/2 cup yogurt mint leaves and crushed pistachios/almonds for garnish
Saathee.com
5
Add 2 cups of whole milk into a large pan under high flame. Continue stirring the milk until it starts to boil. After it boils slowly, reduce heat to medium.
In a small bowl, take the custard powder and add 4 Tbsp of milk. Stir them together until no lumps are formed.
After the milk is boiled completely, put in the custard mixture and sugar into the boiled milk. Continue mixing under the low flame. once the milk completely changes into yellow and gets thick, turn off the stove.
Transfer the custard into another bowl, and cool it completely. Then add custard, yogurt, mangoes, and ice cubes into the blender to mix them completely.
Pour the lassi into as many glasses as you can. Garnish the lassi with mint leaves, crushed pistachios, and almonds. Serve chilled.

Stuffed Paratha - 3 Ways
Saathee RECIPES
Hi everyone! It’s your Saathee chef, Taige, back with another classic from India, stuffed parathas! A paratha is an Indian flatbread enjoyed throughout South Asia and can be served plain or filled with your favorite veggies/ spices. This month we have a special recipe loved by all of my family members thanks to Neeta Mami, our resident paratha guru! I finally had a chance to chat with her and learn how the magic happens, so I am very excited to bring you her famous Punjabi style parathas! our recipe includes three different types of stuffed parathas: aloo (potato), paneer (cheese), and cauliflower. of course, never hesitate to experiment with new fillings like different veggies, beans, and even spices. There are also different methods of stuffing your parathas, so I have included two ways that were suggested by Neeta Mami. Whichever way you decide to fill your flatbread, this recipe is a great one to have and you’ll always end up with soft, flavorful parathas. Watch the step-by-step video for this recipe and others at: Saathee.com/Taige
Serves: 4 people (Total 8 parathas) • Total Time: 45 mins
By: Taige Shukla • Special thanks to Neeta (mami) Pathak
Ingredients 2 cups whole wheat flour 2 potatoes (peeled) 2 spring onions (finely chopped) 1 green chili (finely chopped) ½ inch ginger (finely chopped) ¼ tsp Kashmiri red chili ¼ tsp garam masala 1 tsp cumin seeds ½ tsp coriander ½ tsp chaat masala 2 tsp cilantro (chopped) Salt Filling options in place of potatoes: 2 cups of paneer (crumbled) or 2 cups of cauliflower (shredded)
Saathee.com
Directions
prepping dough and filling: 1. First prepare your dough: 2 cups of whole wheat flour, a pinch of salt, and up to ¾ cup of water. Start by adding ¼ cup of water to the flour and knead until combined. Now continue to add small amounts of water and continue kneading until the dough is soft and smooth. You don’t want the dough to be either too sticky or too dry. Let set for at least 20 minutes. 2. Meanwhile prepare your filling. For aloo paratha (potato filling) peel and boil potatoes until soft. (See below for paneer & cauliflower fillings)* Add in spring onions, green chili ginger paste (place green chili and ginger in a food processor with a splash of water to make paste), Kashmiri red chili, garam masala, cumin seeds, coriander , chaat masala, and cilantro. Mix until well combined. Don’t be afraid to use your hands! * For paneer filling, crumble the paneer until you have 2 cups, and then add in spices. * For cauliflower filling, shred fresh cauliflower florets until you have 2 cups, and then add in spices. Learn to make your own paneer at bit.ly/3eody2A or search “Taige S.” on YouTube.
Filling and rolling-out paratha: 1. once the dough is set, split and roll it in to 8 equal sized balls. Take one dough ball, flatten with your palms and dust it with flour. Roll out the dough until about 4 inches in diameter, and then place 2-3 tbsp of prepared filling in the center. Now fold the edges in until filling is completely encased in the dough. 2. Slightly flatten filled dough in palms and dust with flour. Now gently roll it out until about 6-7 inches in diameter. option 2: Split each dough ball in 2, roll out each half, add 1-2 tbsp of filling to center of one half & top it with the other. Roll out. With this method, the paratha may be slightly smaller.
Cooking paratha: 1. Warm a flat skillet to medium-high heat and spread with ghee or butter. Now place one paratha on the skillet and cook on each side until slightly crisp with brown spots. If you can get the paratha to puff up while cooking, this means it’s cooking properly (don’t worry if this doesn’t happen every time) 2. Make sure to lightly press down the edges to ensure they cook all the way through. Finally, don’t hesitate to add more ghee to each side if necessary, as this makes for a softer paratha. Serve with dahi (yogurt), mango pickle, or chutney. Enjoy!

Mike Tyson Syndrome and the Media M.M.A. Brawl Subcontinental Divide by Ahsen Jillani Monopolies are such great things. Just 60 years back we had two TV channels, two AM radio stations, and of course that hardcopy paper some kid slung into our driveway at 5:30 am. It seemed like the world then was a well-oiled machine of rock-hard facts and solid truths. our parents read the morning paper with tea, and listened intently to the evening news on TV or radio to maintain their status as well-informed citizens. Not really. Back in the day, even in my memory, editorial offices of any media were smoky, smelly and crowded places with frequently overweight editors eating burgers and drinking old, burnt coffee. In essence, they were our filters to the world. And although they were less guided by advertising pressures than editors today, their judgment was not always objective.
news was a fixed menu Not many cities even as late as the 90s had competing papers. I actually encountered that more overseas—and was rather amazed at the disparity between the lead stories, the opinion pages, and even the features. Some editorial boards, it seems, sit down and give priority to important legislative decisions; others, a bomb blast, or mass shooting incident. News was a fixed menu. You ate what the chef cooked. We can of course debate how those days of respecting editors compare to today. We did not see these eclectic people as the rich elite trying to sway opinions. I and Mr. Smith could discuss a news item from the paper or the evening news and be, literally, on the same page. That has all changed. A viewer of Fox News vs. MSNBC lives in alternate realities. There is really no way to argue about the economy, politics, city hall, or anything for that matter, with somebody in a parallel universe. They haven’t heard “your” news—and don’t care to.
i really don’t want to save your job As hardcopy papers shrink and gradually die due to lack of subscribers, you can see the battle moving to the internet. There’s nothing that annoys me more than paywalls that appear on my newsfeed selections. No, I don’t want an unlimited digital subscription to the Des Moines Register sitting in North Carolina. And I don’t appreciate the shoe ad either. Again, I got shoes now. Those sites that let you in whine so much about donating to their paper and the appeal is sometimes longer than the story and you want to slam your phone against your head. I really don’t want to save your job. You are not a non-profit raising money for the Yemen famine, you are a business.
they pretty much break the rules daily I have made a lot of mistakes in my life; the biggest one might have been to purchase shoes on Amazon. My radical view on news gathering consists of plugging in everything into my daily news feed, and then trying to make sense out of nonsense. That’s where the Mike Tyson Syndrome comes in: People like the President, or the talking heads on the liberal and conservative sides, have a knack for the outrageous—they pretty much break the rules daily, and shock the heck out of you—and chew on the proverbial ear that confuses you in the first place. Strangely, then the big corporate machinery cranks up to start spinning your head. okay, I bought shoes. I now have shoes. I didn’t need to see more recommended shoes right after I made the purchase decision, and I sure don’t need to see shoe ads on Fox, NBC, YouTube, InfoWars, Joe Biden’s Website, and on PETA’s anti-fur campaign emails. I have shoes now, okay!
some of us are drinking lattes and crying But the Mike Tyson Syndrome keeps me coming back. I relish the daily illegal activity out of Washington, from the White House to the various departments, and how it’s presented to the public by the various media. Listen to the right wing, and the President just socked it to the criminal immigrants stealing American jobs. Listen to the left, and there are kids in cages at the border sleeping on cement floors. Some of us are drinking lattes and crying, some of us are eating burgers and waving flags. There are two countries, under God, in this republic now. Is the information age the boxing ring we are all sitting around? And so it goes: deliver the daily shock (and the shoe ad), and maybe I will hit the subscribe button, and maybe bookmark your site—the site which will of course tell half the story. You see, this is the Wild West, the world of continued on page 94

another problem on the Health Horizon Medicare Is Running Out of Money
By Julie Rovner, Kaiser Health News
Everyone involved even tangentially in health care today is completely consumed by the coronavirus pandemic, as they should be. But the pandemic is accelerating a problem that used to be front and center in health circles: the impending insolvency of Medicare. With record numbers of Americans out of work, fewer payroll taxes are rolling in to fund Medicare spending, the numbers of beneficiaries are rising, and Congress dipped into Medicare’s reserves to help fund the CoVID-19 relief efforts this spring. “I think we have a real, impending health care crisis,” said Dr. David Shulkin, who was undersecretary for health at the Department of Veterans Affairs under President Barack obama for two years and led the VA for a year under Donald Trump. In April, Medicare’s trustees reported that the Part A Trust Fund, which pays for hospital and other inpatient care, would start to run out of money in 2026. That is the same as the projection in 2019. But the trustees cautioned at the time that their projections did not include the impact of CoVID-19 on the trust fund. “Given the uncertainty associated with these impacts, the Trustees believe that it is not possible to adjust the estimates accurately at this time,” said the report. So Shulkin, now a senior fellow at the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, did his own projections. Given even a conservative estimate of how many workers and businesses would not be contributing payroll taxes that finance Part A spending, he said, the trust fund could become insolvent as early as 2022 or 2023. “I think this is something that needs more immediate attention,” he said. others who make projections agree the insolvency date is getting closer, maybe not as close as 2022. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonpartisan group of budget experts focused on fiscal policy, estimates that the pandemic will cause the Part A Trust Fund to be unable to pay all of its bills starting in late 2023 or early 2024. “But we’re still very close,” said Marc Goldwein, the group’s senior vice president. Saathee.com
There are two ways the Trust Fund can get into trouble: Either the money flowing in is too little, or the payments going out for care are too much. Most of those who watch Medicare finances agree that the larger problem right now is how much money is being collected for the Trust Fund. That money largely comes from the 1.45% payroll tax paid by employees and employers. With so many people out of work due to pandemic-related shutdowns, cash flowing in has dropped dramatically. It’s far less clear what is happening on the spending side of Medicare Part A. (Medicare Part B, which pays physicians and other outpatient costs, is funded by beneficiary premiums and general tax funding, so it cannot technically become insolvent.) While CoVID-related hospital expenses for those on Medicare are expected to be substantial, Medicare hasn’t been reimbursing as much care of other sorts. In some cases, that’s because hospitals in CoVID hot spots temporarily stopped doing elective procedures like joint replacements. In other cases, patients with non-CoVID ailments have been afraid to go to hospitals for fear of catching the virus. Also, said Goldwein, health care use tends to fall in recessions, even for Medicare, whose beneficiaries are largely retired. In the end, he said, “we basically threw our hands up and said we don’t have the information” to estimate how health costs will affect the Trust Fund’s financing. There is one other CoVID-related policy that could hasten the depletion of the Trust Fund. At least $60 billion of the funding provided as part of the CARES Act to help hospitals weather the pandemic came not from the general treasury, but from the Trust Fund itself. That money in “accelerated and advance payments” is supposed to be paid back, via a reduction in future payments. But there is a push in some quarters for that funding to be forgiven, which would make the Trust Fund’s hole even bigger. It is not exactly clear what would happen if the Trust Fund were to become insolvent because it has never happened before. As the Congressional Research Service pointed out, “There are no provisions in the Social Security Act that govern what would happen if insolvency were to occur.” It is important to remember that the fund becoming insolvent is not the same as being bankrupt. Insolvent means the Trust Fund would still have money flowing in, but not enough to pay for all the care Medicare patients will consume. Most budget experts think that Medicare would reimburse hospitals and other Part A providers 100 percent of their claims until the fund truly runs out of money. Then it would pay claims only as more money flows in. others in the health field think Medicare might reimburse only a percentage of those claims, but that might require congressional action. Meanwhile, one would expect the hospital industry to be ringing the alarm bells as potential insolvency approaches. But that’s not happening. “They’re more concerned with next month than with 2023 at this point,” said Goldwein. Chip Kahn, president and CEo of the Federation of American Hospitals, agreed. “I’m not going to worry about this right this minute,” he said. “At this point, my focus is completely on CoVID.”

little broken ragdolls caught in hurricane winds that have neither mind nor heart for us; the little ragdoll certainly does not feel like the privileged Goldilocks in the children’s tale! Wouldn’t it be nice to somehow be like Goldilocks, and traipse through life, carefree and satisfied?
Goldilocks Thinking
Thinking About Thinking by Balaji Prasad “I see at intervals the glance of a curious sort of bird through the close set bars of a cage: a vivid, restless resolute captive is there; were it but free, it would soar cloud-high.” - Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre Goldilocks was a simple girl. She didn’t think too hard, and she got what a little girl would want. She got her fill of some palate-tickling porridge, a bit of relaxation in a comfy chair and some restful sleep in a beautiful bed. Wouldn’t it be nice to be transported to such a magical universe, where you could saunter though its rooms, not have to think too hard, try a few of this and a few of that, and pick and choose whatever you happen to fancy at the moment? Alas, the real world is a much harsher place. Sometimes it may feel like it buffets us around like

trapped in a glass cage We live in an abundant universe. Even when it feels like there are a lot of things wrong with it, if we take a step back and survey things around us, we may see that there are indeed many things that we could get if we really went after them. Somehow, the universe sits there with all its bounty, much more than Goldilocks could have ever wanted, but yet these things are always just out of the reach of our grasping hands. Because they sit on the other side of the glass cage that we find ourselves in. From where we can see many, many things but are never able to touch them. Forced to deal with what we have on the inside of the glass cage we find ourselves in, we look around with an air of hopelessness, hoping yet that our eyes alight on something meaningful, something that holds the potential for a dash of fulfillment. And then we spot something! Something we didn’t see before, even though it was always there …
a goldmine! “Me!” we say to ourselves, “There’s me, inside this cage, even if there’s not much else in sight.” Surely, there is something of value in this complex creature of nature that lives, breathes, grows, reacts, heals and does all kinds of magical things. Maybe we can harness the power of this mysterious beast and ride it to nirvana. There was a time, long, long ago, when this thing used to roam free. A time when it would go where it went, never noticing that there was a glass cage, let alone that there were all these shiny objects outside such a cage. Somewhere along the way, Goldilocks lost her way. She saw other people, became very aware of them, the things they said, and the deeds they did. Unwittingly, she started to adopt many of their habits, ideas and ways of being. She got complicated. Very complicated indeed. The little girl “grew up”, and, in the process of doing that, she grew out of herself. She grew out of the world. But there’s a glimmer of hope now. At least we have recognized the presence of this munificent life form that lay more or less dormant for all these years. Yes, the Goldilocks gold is still there; it just needs a bit of thoughtful excavation from the depths of the goldmine that we have just discovered where it lays buried. continued on page 94

history. Both parties are holding their conventions in August. The Democrats are essentially going to hold a virtual convention in Milwaukee with a small audience for the big Joe Biden speech accepting his nomination. They are encouraging delegates to stay home! The Republicans had moved their convention from Charlotte to Jacksonville because the North Carolina Governor wouldn’t guarantee a convention without social distancing and facial coverings. Now President Trump, who pulled the convention from Charlotte due to his fight with Governor Cooper, has cancelled the Jacksonville convention due to Florida becoming the pandemic epicenter. The organizers were already scaling down their plans in Jacksonville, with smaller crowds, President Trump giving his big speech in an outdoor venue, and limiting media and guests. Now, the Jacksonville events are completely cancelled while a small group will gather in Charlotte to conduct party business. Sure, conventions maybe old school, but they fire up the party activists, put spotlights on up-and-coming political stars that can showcase themselves with high profile speeches. All that effort is now moot. I attended the 2012 DNC convention for obama’s official reelection kickoff in Charlotte as a member of the media. I was looking forward to covering the RNC convention in Charlotte with media credentials this year before jittery Republicans moved it at the whims of President Trump. I was planning to attend both conventions this year; now looks like I will be watching whatever they come up with on TV. Keep the popcorn handy.

a Century of Women’s Vote
It’s almost unfathomable that the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave took 144 years since becoming an independent nation before allowing women to vote. our forward-thinking Founding Fathers, who created the brilliant Constitution, didn’t think women had enough brainpower to be able to cast a vote? It took decades of struggle before women won the right to vote, thanks to the 19th Amendment ratified on August 18, 1920. Celebrate 100 years of this achievement this Saathee.com

such as transferring to a school with in-person instruction to remain in lawful status. If not, they may face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings.” on July 14, 2020, the Department undertook a complete about-face, rescinding the memorandum and again permitting online-only class schedules. The change was likely in response to litigation spearheaded by Harvard and MIT asserting that the directive failed to take into consideration the many ripple effects that such a determination has upon various interested parties. The reversal was seen as another self-inflicted embarrassment for the Trump Administration, which had likely underestimated the blowback from students and universities. Although the lawsuit has yet to be formally dismissed, the Administration is unlikely to try to seek to implement any similar policy before the start of the coming fall term. The arguments set forth by Harvard and MIT in the F-1 context are, ironically, similar to those decided by the United States Supreme Court in upholding the DACA program, which the Trump Administration has unsuccessfully attempted to abolish over the past three years. The high court’s ruling, cheered by immigrant advocates, held that the Trump Administration failed to observe the requirements of the Administrative Procedures Act, which mandates that regulatory and policy changes cannot be “arbitrary and capricious” and must be rooted in accountability to the public and take into account the full scope of outcomes when enacting a change. By failing to provide a “reasoned analysis” to the
Immigration Matters by Rishi P. Oza As if 2020 has not been chaotic enough with the CoVID-19 pandemic, racial strife and an oncoming presidential election, the immigration world has been on fire for the past month with policy changes issued from the US Department of Homeland Security and the United States Supreme Court issuing landmark decisions on cases of importance to hundreds of thousands of individuals in the United States. Unpacking these developments and understanding the long-term implications has been a challenge to say the least. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the agency charged with overseeing individuals currently in the United States on F-1 student visas, issued a policy memorandum blindsiding students nationwide in stating that F-1s currently in the United States that are enrolled in school programs operating entirely online are not considered to be taking a full course load and are thus considered to be in violation of their F-1 status. The announcement issued on July 6, 2020, and just weeks before school is scheduled to open, left students and administrators alike scrambling on how to accommodate the thousands of F-1s in the United States in the midst of a pandemic that requires all individuals to socially distance themselves from one another. DHS stated that students currently in the United States and enrolled in online-only programs “must depart the country or take other measures, Saathee.com

where we could start. We give so much material stuff to our children at a very early age that the value of such stuff (toys, clothes, gadgets, pricy dining, vacations, and camps) is compromised heavily. Children just don’t have any value for such things anymore. Toys, as new gifts, will be played for five minutes and then pushed in the corner never to be seen again; this is just one example. Instead, perhaps telling the child that instead of ten toys, cash for the five toys will go in their bank account and they should observe how it is growing every year. They also need to know that this money will be used for their college expenses. I always struggle with the thought of how such habits can be formed in a young age and how we can help them enhance those in the future. To enhance the value of money further, let the children be allowed to earn some small money on their own at an appropriate age. Extra chores in the home, not the ones they must be doing anyway, can earn money. Babysitting at the right age and with the right aptitude, dog walking, cat sitting, plants caretaker, lawn mowing with the right physique, some literary work at the school newspaper or library are all good examples of getting them to understand the value of money. I have seen juveniles showing talent and starting businesses like coding, computer and cell phone repair, minor car maintenance, doing artwork, etc. At an early age they can be introduced to picking stocks, initially just as an exercise with presumed money to gain experience but later with limited amount of real money. This is a good step because they quickly come to appreciate the facts that hasty actions have bad consequences and that long-term thinking is essential. The biggest benefit might be to learn the process of deciding which companies to own for the future. Everything mentioned above not only gives some entrepreneurial experience to the young generation but also firmly establishes the fact that we are the masters of our own actions and thoughts. We can win if done right and we can lose if done hastily. A little stumble here, a little roadblock there under the tutelage of an experienced elder is never bad; in fact, it only adds to the character. Knowing that we can’t win every thing every time does not have to come only from learning President Lincoln’s biography, it can be experienced first hand under some seasoned supervision. Financial bridges can be built across generations if only given a chance. The way this fast-paced western world is moving is scary and if the older experiences are discarded as ancient and useless then it will be even scarier. As mentioned before, the process does not change; it’s just that different tools get used. older generations can and should certainly help plant these educational trees knowing well that they will never sit under the shade of those trees. But does it matter?

Most of us have some experience with living in a family of multiple generations under one roof even though the world does not seem to be going that way for some time now. Today the tendency is to have just our own immediate unitized family and that is it. Certainly there are benefits to that arrangement but there are numerous disadvantages, too. It seems that the western world has most certainly adopted that kind of thinking where as the eastern world is still struggling with the idea. We have organized society today so the generations have little contact in their daily lives as well as in education, workplace and in housing. That is regrettable. one of the biggest benefits is the wealth of information that can be transferred to the next generation through the personal hands-on experiences, stories, tales and anecdotes and other ways that a senior generation can impart to the younger one. I am thinking especially of financial matters. It can be argued that the old ways of doing things are not applicable anymore and they cannot be applied and need not be taught to the young. There could be some truth to that but we only have to keep in mind that the basic process does not change even though the way of teaching or imparting that knowledge could be different and made easier for the young brain to comprehend and retain. Look at it this way: 2 x 3 + 4 has equaled 10 for ages and has not changed, but the way teachers impart that concept to the students could be different. An example of this in the financial world could be if you wish to instill the thought of saving money for the future, then that process has not changed. Neither has the fact that the saving is for the future (retirement) and when you save and invest you would earn some interest or growth on that money. But how to go about doing that could be totally different today than it was even 25 years ago. Unfortunately, that process starts anew for every generation and the only way the new generation is going to learn is via their parents, if they are lucky, or via the hard knocks of self-taught experiences. In my opinion, most of the younger generation is looking for some guidance from the older generations, some handholding and avoiding the pitfalls that the elders have suffered through. We make our best efforts to keep our family comfortable; now let us help them create the financial confidence so that they can accomplish the same for themselves and for their children. They need to be taught certain skills for Mo Vidwans that to happen and, like I mentioned above, older folks are not Vidwans is an independent, board certified financial planner. A Century of Liberty Women’s Long Struggle to Vote in the United States Women’s Suffrage as a whole. What struck me as odd was that the first documented instance of women being able to vote in America was actually not in 1920 but in 1869 in Wyoming before it became a state. The first Indigenous nation to give women voting rights was the Iroquois as far back as the 17th century. The first woman in colonial America to be able to legally vote was Lydia Taft in 1756. Hawaiian women could vote as of 1840 due to a loophole in the Kingdom’s Constitution at the time. Suffice it to say, many seeds were already in place for Women’s Suffrage in the United States to flourish. While the first name many think of is Susan B. Anthony in terms of Women’s Suffrage, there have been many other advocates who have made their mark in history to make this possible. Notable pioneers for Women’s Suffrage in their respected countries include Marie Stritt, Catherine Helen Spence, Gina Krog, Emmeline Pankhurst, Emily Davison, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and Jane Brigode. All of them have helped shape the world in a way that helped make women’s rights just a little bit brighter.
Mirror, Mirror by Jennifer Allen
“Never underestimate the power we women have to define our own destinies.” ~ Emeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep) in Suffragette
August 26 is Women’s Equality Day. This date is special because 100 years ago, in 1920, the 19th amendment was added to the US Constitution, which gave women the right to vote in the United States. I’ll admit that as a young kid, I had no idea that women could not vote before this. I always remember going with my mother to the voting booth and sitting outside as she pulled the curtain closed and ticked those little tabs to pick her favorite political candidates on the ballot. She’d never say (even to my dad) who she picked either. Mom was always very proud of her choices like it was one of the few things she had complete control over, and she was never in the mood to brag about it either. I still respect her for it, and still have no idea to this day who she voted for in each presidential election before 1988. It’s kind of embarrassing, but my realization of women’s suffrage comes from an unlikely place: the Disney film adaptation of Mary Poppins. A subplot in the film shows the matriarch of the Banks family, Winifred, spending a lot of time involved with the “Votes for Women” campaign in London which was in full swing in 1910 when the movie takes place. I remember my 4 year-old self being completely confused at the concept and having to ask my mom about it afterwards. She described to me the Cliff Notes version of it, or at least enough of a description for my young brain to figure out. This was also probably one of my first true turning points when I realized what Feminism truly was. You have to understand that I was raised by a mother who was a homemaker; a woman who never finished college and felt she wasn’t skilled (or pretty) enough to re-enter the workforce. This was the same woman who had an IQ of 154, encouraged me to love comic books and games, and told me every time she could that I could be anything I wanted as long as I worked hard at achieving it. She was a walking contradiction in a sense, but I can also see where she was coming from. once I hit college I did take a few Women’s Studies classes including a course on Women in Modern US History. It’s here that I was introduced to a more thorough understanding of Saathee.com
“I should like to see the time come when women shall help to make the laws. I should like to see that whiplash, the ballot, in the hands of women.” ~ Mark Twain
Here in America, it’s become so easy to take this simple right for granted since it has been 100 years. It seems so commonplace now and easy to forget. All of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh granted women the right to vote in 1947 after Independence (though the Sikhs had already granted this right as early as 1925). Even that seems like a distant memory… and yet we just recently witnessed Saudi Arabia finally give this right to women in 2015. This realization is a hefty reminder that we as American women who have now had this choice since 1920 should not take it for granted. The best way to truly celebrate what freedom we have is to walk up to your voting office in November and exercise that right which was given to use so long ago. Perhaps you will even feel the sensation my mother would feel each time she pulled back that heavy curtain after placing her own votes all those years ago. Be proud. Be strong. Remember that each of you can make a difference thanks to all of the hard working women before us who made this possible.

News Notes Dr. Sudhakar Jonnalagadda from Georgia to Lead AAPI as President
The American Association of Physicians of Indian origin has elected Dr. Sudhakar Jonnalagadda as President to lead the organization for the next year. “I will work to make AAPI stronger, more vibrant, united, transparent, politically engaged, ensuring active participation of young physicians, increasing membership, and enabling that AAPI’s voice is heard in the corridors of power,” Dr. Jonnalagadda, who will assume charge as the 37th President of AAPI said. He said, “The CoVID-19 pandemic has imposed inordinate challenges on all of us. However, despite these hardships, we will adapt and we will thrive. Perhaps there has never been a greater need for us as physicians, as members of AAPI, and for our crucial mission. We share the agony of those amongst us who have personally suffered from this scourge, and we extend our sympathies for the families that have lost a dear one, as well as our prayers for those still fighting the disease, for a rapid and full recovery. As we look toward the future together, I hope that you will make plans to join us for a fabulous AAPI Convention in orlando in July 2021. I look forward to welcoming all of you in person in Florida next summer.” Dr. Jonnalagadda practices Gastroenterology and transplant hepatology in Douglas, GA, a rural town in southern Georgia. Founded in 1982, the American Association of Physicians of Indian origin represents a conglomeration of more than 80,000 practicing physicians in the United States. Indiaspora Business Leaders List Recognizes Executives of Indian Heritage Leading Global Corporations
Indiaspora, a nonprofit organization of global Indian diaspora leaders from various backgrounds and professions, released last month their inaugural list honoring executives of the Indian diaspora who are leading the largest global corporations in 2020. Drawing from the latest editions of Fortune and Forbes U.S. and global lists, the Indiaspora Business Leaders List includes 58 executives serving at the helm of their respective companies as Chief Executive officer, President, or Chairman of the Board. Under their leadership, these companies collectively employ more than 3.6 million worldwide and account for a combined USD $1 trillion in revenue and $4 trillion in market capitalization. “We wanted to capture this incredible feat that our community is achieving with increasing numbers,” said Indiaspora Founder MR Rangaswami, a Silicon Valley-based entrepreneur and investor. “The impact that the Indian diaspora is having in the realm of business is remarkable. It’s one of the reasons we launched this project, and we hope our lists will continue to raise the profile of those who have reached the very top of their fields while also serving as agents for positive change.” The list includes immigrants from India as well as professionals born in countries such as Uganda, Ethiopia, England, and the U.S. “I’m amazed to see how far we’ve come in terms of representation in business,” said Raj Gupta, former CEo of Fortune 300 company Rohm and Haas, and one of the first executives of the Indian diaspora to join the ranks of corporate leadership along with pioneers such as Indra Nooyi of PepsiCo and Dinesh Paliwal of Harman International. “There used to be only a handful of us leading corporations. Now that we are reaching prominence, I am eager to see how the next generation leaves its own legacy.” Mr. Gupta, an Indiaspora member, serves as Chairman of two companies on the Business Leaders List, Aptiv and Avantor. Indiaspora was established to transform the success of the Indian diaspora into meaningful impact worldwide. For more information, visit www.indiaspora.org. 64

What is the
Census?
The 2020 Census is in Progress and Extended Due to the Pandemic Current News by Molly Black Every ten years the federal government conducts the Census. All individuals regardless of citizenship status, age, or race residing in the United States and its’ territories are counted. This data directly influences the next decade of funding and decision making throughout the U.S., including the disbursement of hundreds of billions in federal funding, the seats each state holds in the House of Representatives, and the drawing of congressional and state legislative districts. These are just a few of the large-scale repercussions of Census data, not including decisions on the local scale which determine where new schools, clinics, roads, and human and family services are needed. The Census is critical in allowing the government to effectively serve its citizens and it directly impacts every single community throughout the United States. The 2020 Census is currently underway and citizens across the country will have received mailouts, seen billboards, and advertisements urging participation. But something is different this cycle. With the events of CoVID-19, Census operations have slowed and home visits have completely stopped. The disruption in operations and the daily lives of citizens has led to concern over accurate data collection and spurred the decision to push the deadline for Census survey submission from July 31 to october 31, 2020. The gravity of the outcome of the 2020 Census is immense and it is considered the civic duty of all residents of the United States to participate, as it did with the very first Census taken in 1790.
History of the u.s. Census The U.S. Constitution requires a decennial census be conducted to track the population of the nation. Since the very first Census, taken more than a year after the beginning of George Washington’s first presidential term, the need for further information about the population and economy became evident. With this realization the Census began to steadily expand throughout the nineteenth century, and by the turn of the century demographic, agricultural, and economic data was being collected. As the nation evolved over the years the Census moved with it, reflecting economic, political and cultural developments. one of the strongest changes that can be tracked through the history of the Census is the shift in how race has been documented and expanded as the political and cultural makeup of American life Saathee.com

every human being and start thinking of the interests of other people, two of the biggest causes of depression, self-pity and jealousy go away. If you believe that the same divine force with infinite power is in you, there is no reason to have self-pity. Similarly, if you also firmly believe that the same divine force is in every other human being, then there is no reason to be jealous. The concept of divinity is a great paradigm and an excellent framework to combat depression and bring happiness in your life. As recent as a few months back, when I would go for walks in the morning, I used to offer a metaphorical Namaste with my smile at fellow passersby because I would see a “Divinity Inside” logo marked on their forehead. During this Covid-19 period I am aware that with my mask people cannot see my smile. However, I still try to smile and make eye contact with them hoping my feelings towards them get conveyed through my eyes. If I see people who are unresponsive, indifferent or just grumpy, I still give them the benefit of the doubt with a nod or a wave. I know that their inner GPS has had a temporary glitch and they will also find their divinity eventually. I guess because of this same reasoning I didn’t throw that somewhat irreverent woman out of my car even though … she had a British accent. I think Gandhi would have been proud of my non-violent restraint.
Raajeev Corner
continued from page 42
Another corollary of this belief is that if you want happiness in your life then make a wish that nobody’s child would ever have to suffer. We are all interconnected and if some family is not happy then, invariably, that misery will come back and haunt us. If you apply the same principle in our foreign policy and start viewing the divinity in every human being regardless of whether their country has oil or no oil or just vegetable oil, many of the answers will come. I tried using the principles in our domestic policy. once I found myself watching a beautiful woman walking down the street. I know my wife was not too happy. I said, “Look, I am just admiring the divinity in her. I am not admiring the creation; I am admiring the creator.” It didn’t help because I made the mistake of referring to the woman as a Goddess. one of my friends once jokingly asked me, “Would Gandhi have used Viagra?” Some of my Indian colleagues would find such a statement offensive. To them I would say that Gandhi was a big believer of humor. He once said if it weren’t for humor, he would have committed suicide. The question is not whether Gandhi would have used Viagra. The question is whether Gandhi would have used Prozac, an anti-depressant. I firmly believe that the answer would be no. He would not have used it. He would not have needed it. If you believe in the ubiquitous nature of divinity like Mahatma Gandhi, you would never be depressed. If you start seeing the goodness in Saathee.com

communities. This Census will also inform the level of federal response during natural disasters or pandemics, such as the one we are currently living through. A large influx of people moving to Charlotte has taken place in the last decade and the city has now become the 15th largest city in the United States. This is increase of 20.4 percent in population with an overall increase in the state population of about 10 percent. With such huge growth in the population over the last ten years the Census data coming particularly out of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area will set the groundwork for the next decade of improvements and adaptations to handle a more populous Charlotte. The population increase from 2010-2019 for other Carolinas cities: Greensboro (10.3 percent), Raleigh (17.3 percent), Durham (21.4 percent), and Columbia, SC (1.0 percent). The 2020 Census comes at an unprecedented time in our history as a nation. But the Census has never been conducted in a vacuum, it has occurred time and again amidst tumultuous times and national crisis. Marking defining moments for generation after generation. The 2020 Census will provide a snapshot of this nation, who we are, where we live, preserving this moment for our future, not for just the next decade but for the many more to come. What will future generations read into our record as a nation? How will our changing values, interests, and challenges as the American people be reflected in the data that is collected? changed. According the history of the Census provided by the Census Bureau, when the Census first began in 1790 it “listed the head of household and counted (1) the number of free White males (2) the number of free White females, all other free persons (including any Indians (Native Americans) who paid taxes) and (3) how many slaves there were.” This type of identification without representation of any individual who was not a head of household continued until 1840. In 1850, all free persons were listed by name with their characteristics including, occupation, place of birth, and school enrollment; thus, giving a small amount of recognition to the identity and personhood of marginalized groups for the first time since the founding of the nation. The history of the Census reporting of race in America is a problematic one. Prior to 1960, individual’s race was determined by census takers and only beginning in the year 2000 were U.S. residents able to choose more than one race to describe themselves. The 2020 Census has taken the tracking of the multiracial population a step further with allowing respondents who choose white or black for their race to give more information on origins, (i.e., German, Somali, etc.). The developments in how the Census represents the population of America is important in building a robust image of what our nation is at its core. Besides the population count which from 1790 has grown from 3.9 million to 309.3 million as recorded in 2010, tracking the history of the Census allows us to see a visual history of our nation written down in hard Molly Black numbers. the 2020 Census & the Carolinas In the beginning of Census taking, only the age of free white males was tracked to gauge the number of fighting age men available to join the military. The information gathered from the Census today has a far greater impact, including information such as your morning commute. Census results directly impact highway planning and construction, as well as grants for public transportation. The Census determines where money for the Head Start program are allocated and grants that support teachers and special education are distributed. The list of the impact of the Census continues, including wildlife restoration, child abuse prevention, assisted living for the elderly, wildfire preparedness, support to rural areas and more. Under the continual threat of the current pandemic, the 2020 Census has taken a hit. As of July 5, 2020, 58.1 percent of households in NC have responded to the Census, with only a half percent increase over a two-week period and 56.3 percent of households in SC have responded. As a nation similar numbers can be seen with only a .3 percent increase from 61.6 percent to 61.9 percent. In the past, the slowing of responses was countered by the deployment of Census workers to nonresponsive households but given the current climate this is no longer the case throughout much of the country. Fears due to a lack of response are creeping out of the Carolinas. North Carolina is projected to gain a seat in the House of Representatives due to population growth, but without an accurate count this seat may no longer be ensured. Additionally, Census data will bring in more than $1,800 per person per year of government funding to North Carolina Saathee.com

Dadaji’s moral stories for kids THE KING AND THE FOOLISH MONKEY
There was once a king who had a pet monkey. The monkey always accompanied the king and even did little chores for him. one hot afternoon, as the king took a nap, the monkey sat next to the king and fanned him with a big leaf. Meanwhile, a fly came and sat on the king’s nose. The monkey tried to shoo it away, but it kept coming back. Frustrated with the fly, the monkey took the king’s dagger to kill it. He attacked the fly as it sat on the king’s neck, killing the king instantly.

Dhoni, to a dacoit searching for redemption. Rajput brought youthful spirit and a much studied approach to the roles he played, and was an artist who understood and valued subtlety. After his passing, people watched his interviews and came to know more about the film industry outsider, an actor who was formally trained in dance and theater. His life story was more like that of a Hindi film character, and hardly resembled the privileged upbringing many top Hindi film heroes enjoyed. Born and raised in Bihar, Rajput and his family moved to Delhi after the devastating loss of his mother. Academically gifted, he placed in the top ten of the Delhi College of Engineering entrance examination, an exam taken by many tens of thousands across India. He was also a National olympiad winner in the subject of physics and tutored on the side for pocket money. In the shallow world of showbiz academic excellence and achievement doesn’t resonate with most filmwallahs. But it does with the average Indian. When old photos were shared of Rajput spending time with family in what looked like a typical middle-class Indian home, many felt the young man with no industry connections could have been a family member or a good friend. Rajput’s death quickly reignited the debate around nepotism in the Hindi film industry. To many it looked as if the film industry, which values dynastic surnames and powerful godfathers more than talent, sacrificed a common man so industry insiders could further thrive. Despite brilliant performances in films like Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! and Sonchiriya, and finding commercial success in movies like M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Kedarnath and the recent Chhichhore, it was argued that if he had the right film pedigree, Rajput would have easily been deemed the biggest star of his generation. The coveted Millennial and Generation Z demographics, who consume cinema-related content through social media, took to online platforms to vent their frustration at “Nepo Kids” and kingmakers, leading many star kids to stop posting content and even leave social media all together. Speculation continues as to why Rajput ended his life, as does a formal investigation by the Mumbai police. Rajput’s final film, Dil Bechara, has released on the Disney+ Hotstar streaming platform, to both subscribers and nonsubscribers, as of July 24, 2020 and if the film’s trailer garnering over 70 million views in a week is any indication, millions will watch Rajput’s swan song. After the passing of Sushant Singh Rajput, I am much more aware of the power an audience member has to heartily support merit over mediocrity, and to distinguish meaningful content from glitzy publicity. As someone who loves watching Hindi cinema, I choose to honor the legacy of Khan and Rajput by watching, or re-watching, their work and appreciating how their creativity has both entertained and moved me.
digging out nuggets Things are starting to shift. We are starting to look within rather than continuing to be tantalized by the mirages out there. We discover that the creature has been busy, working assiduously on its own, even though we were unaware of its existence. Even while we stared into the empty spaces outside the glass cage, for what seems like an eternity, filling those voids with the power of our imaginative minds. The passage of time has brought rich experience and created many nuggets inside the newly unearthed goldmine that has recently captured our attention. And now that the creature’s existence is recognized, it can go deep into these mines and fetch rare and precious things that are life giving and life sustaining: the nuggets that time has carved deep into the landscape that stretches far beyond where our eyes can see.
the return of Goldilocks “I just want some piquant porridge, a comfy chair, and a beautiful bed,” asserts the little girl who’s back mysteriously after having been gone for so many years. It’s so much simpler when you know what you want, and when it lies on this side of the glass cage. And, when we don’t even see a glass cage. We don’t have to “think outside the box” because there is no “box”, and, more importantly, there is no “thinking” – at least, the thinking we have been calling “thinking” for so long. And even when the bears come back from their walk and see you in baby bear’s bed, just get up and run into the forest. You’ll be fine. Your feet will take you where they need to take you, when they need to do so. Goldilocks is back. For good.

obscene information, and we are riding into Dodge City on a donkey, expecting a warm welcome. Instead, extreme partisanship and brutal advertising, click bait, and chumboxes are dominating our experience with “President tells lie No. 22,000” to “Every Floridian will be dead in two weeks due to mismanaged virus policy.” It’s really finally a battle for our souls—what the media wants us to become by being part of the bookmarked partnership, the subscribers, the believers, the purchasers, the clickers of chumboxes that say, “Never eat this vegetable if you want gut health.” And the web keeps spinning around us daily, screaming, “We are the real news! Choose us! Choose us!”, until only our arms are somewhat mobile, to use the newest technology, click our credit cards on the phone screen… …and buy more shoes.
